What the California Wildfire Firefighters Eat | Eater
"Located northwest of Redding, this lakeside area became a frontline staging zone where firefighters shouldered 45+-pound packs and marched straight into extreme heat as the nearby fire advanced. With temperatures nearing 100°F by midmorning, crews grabbed quick, calorie-dense rations before heading out under helicopter rotors, seeing the landscape less as forest and more as fuel to be navigated during long, dangerous shifts." - Sam Chapple-Sokol
The water is warmer the the other nearby lakes and the lake is big enough that, if you look, you can find a secluded place to hang out. We camp at oak bottom every year before the crowds of summer

We love Whismeytown. There are so many locations on this lake to take your family to find a spot to day-chill if you don’t rent a Pontoon to enjoy the lake. The water is clean the views are breathtaking.

The area offers an excellent opportunity for recreational activities, including scenic drives, hiking, and swimming, which I found highly enjoyable.

Great lake for boating and water sports. Beautiful scenery and warm water, we rented a boat and enjoyed the lake for the day. Go and have fun!

Whiskeytown lake is the most beautiful lake I have ever seen. It is so peaceful there and hard to take your eyes off of every inch of the area. Everywhere you turn there there's something amazing to be discovered. The lookout point by The visitors center is also a great place to see how much already of the lake from one location. from what I understand there are tons of different locations to visit there at the lake that offer different views and scenes. There is a little bit of walking and order to get close to the lake but nothing unreasonable. I highly suggest visiting this specific lake. It would be a shame if anyone had come to Shasta County and did not take a trip to this location. The locals and travelers that have visited here have always had the same reaction of complete awe. Great place for kids as well and it is perfect for hot summer days. I often see people reading books by the lake as well as swimming. Just thinking about it makes me want to go there right now. Is very peaceful and quiet so whatever you looking for I can guarantee you this has something to offer. Be sure to charge your phone because you'll be taking lots of photos and bring food with you as there are not many places around there to grab a bite to eat.

Visited the lake in early August, drove right off of Hwy 299, and was able to access the water very easily. The water was clear and the perfect temperature. I wasn’t able to detour to much off my route but I am sure you can find places and beaches with handicap parking and access to the water.

An amazingly beautiful place. We parked in a little layby jist beyond the visitor centre which was quiet and had great views, but you could really walk around from there. It was heart breaking to see to the devastation from the wildfires to one side. Praying for the area and for protectio. From future fires.

Amazing place to go for a quick lake adventure. Lots of different places to drive for the scenery and great for stargazing with your special someone. It’s been bad since the fire but a nice place to come on a Saturday for a picnic at one of its many tables. Great tourism spot for people outside of Redding and for the community. Must see location!
