The Best Christmas Bars In Philly - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"This Center City bar is named after the game where you never end up with an iPad. Everything in the joint—from the walls and fuzzy chairs to the Christmas trees and faux fireplaces—is rose colored. The only thing keeping White Elephant from ranking higher is their non-Christmas playlist (it’s a lot of Barry White and Rick James). But this is still a fun place to drink cider sangria and imagine what it might be like to visit Paris Hilton’s cabin in the woods." - candis mclean

Took a while for a server to come to us, actually had to flag one down. They were quick though once order was taken. Appetizers sampler was ok. Dinner entrees were good. Desserts were basically American cheesecakes, chocolate cake etc. that’s fine but in a Thai restaurant I was hoping for Thai food…. like sticky rice and mangoes.

Had a great dinner today. The server was efficient and friendly. The atmosphere was very sophisticated and relaxing. I got the coconut soup, drunken noodles with tofu and shrimp as well as the lava cake with scoop of coconut ice cream on top. The flavors were incredible and diverse. They worked together to create some incredible dishes! Will definitely return soon!

We recently celebrated my father's 89th birthday at the White Elephant Thai Cuisine in Huntingdon Valley, PA. As soon as we stepped through the doors, it was like entering a different world. The vibrant colors and aromas of fresh spices filled the restaurant with an aura of magic and delight! We were greeted warmly by our friendly server who took us to our table and shared all the specials they had on offer that night. The menu had something for everyone; from mild to hot dishes, vegetarian or not - there was truly something for everyone. We decided to try some unique French-influenced We ordered the Ginger Salad with the most delicious ginger dressing we ever had. And the portion was enormous, enough for 4 people. We had the Corn Cakes as an app and for the main courses we ordered the Sesame Tuna, Tutti Fruity Duck, and vegetarian Jungle 2 Jungle Thai dishes. Every bite was more delicious than the last - each dish bursting with flavor in every single mouthful! The portions were generous yet affordable so none of us left feeling hungry or have any regrets about trying out all these amazing flavors. It's no wonder why White Elephant Thai Cuisine has been voted best Thai Restaurant in town four years running now! They are a BYOB restaurant without a corking charge, so you can bring your favorite liquor, and they'll supply the glasses. Stop by for delicious Thai food! They're located 30 minutes outside Center City Philadelphia in Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania. If you're looking for a one-of-a-kind dining experience, then look no further than White Elephant Thai Cuisine!

Google
One of the best Thai restaurants around. Service is great and wonderful atmosphere. Everything we've ever eaten has been excellent. The Soups are delicious, Tulip Dumplings, Drunken Noodles perfectly seasoned and the Duck was the most amazing I've ever experienced. The desserts are a work of art. Everyone there goes out of the way to ensure all is perfect. This was not our first time and they never dissapoint.

Google
First time here and so impressed! Beautiful interior, friendly staff, and the food was exquisite 👌. We had the corn cakes appetizer, which was crispy and so flavorful. I had the Tutti Fruity Duck. It was in a delicious raspberry sauce! My husband had the crab stuffed salmon and ate every last bite. We finished with two beautiful desserts- chocolate molten cake and chocolate mousse. Definitely a place we'll be returning to!

Google
Its was always just ok and not amazing Thai food. Last time I was annoyed to see that a a dish thats start with 17.99$ ended up costing me 22$ before tax (you add protein for 2$ and brown rise for 2$ and gets a very small portion). If you going to start charging high prices for Thai food, you better start making it at least taste like a fancy Thai place.

Google
My experience at White Elephant was conflicting. Walking in, the place was very comfortable and welcoming. The decorations everywhere give it so much character and coziness. My conflicts started in regard to the food. I had stated to my server straight away that I had a peanut allergy and ordered a dish that wouldn’t have peanuts at all just to be safe. When my food came out, there were peanuts sprinkled all over my dish. I informed my server and they got it remade as quickly as possible. When my food came out once again, there were no peanuts this time, but the flavor was lacking in my dish. The person I was dining with also had some complaints about the lack of flavor in his dish as well. Overall, it was a disappointing experience for us.

Ordered delivery. Quick and easy from their app. Arrived piping hot in 35 minutes. Everything was the spice level I selected and with great flavor.

Yelp
Amazing to discover this gem of a restaurant on Huntingdon Pike in a strip mall. I ordered the pumpkin soup, which was more like s bisque, & it was a delightfully fragrant start. For my entree, I chose the Mussaman Chicken Curry & asked them for mild to medium spice. This was a curry I'd never had, but now I can't wait to eat it again. It was one of the best Asian dishes I've EVER HAD!! I'm now obsessed! I even bought a jar of sauce in an Asian market to try at home! There was lots of very tender chicken, along with fresh vegetables in this rich coconutty, peanutty, fragrant, rich sauce. It was served along with a bowl of perfect sticky rice. I thought I'd take half home, but I couldn't stop eating my magic dish. When the chicken was gone, I made sure to add rice to the sauce to not waste a drop. It was THAT GOOD! I was too full for dessert, though they offered both American (chocolate peanut butter pie) & Thai desserts. The service was gracious & accommodating for our table of 10. The restaurant is rather typical in decor, but very clean. Highly recommend - I'm going back soon.

Yelp

White Elephant had GREAT Indian food. John and his staff were top notch. I am really going to miss going for the lunch specials and dinner

Yelp
The new White Elephant is a good, if not better than the old one with several of the old faces retained by the new owner. We were so pleasantly surprise after have thought we had lost this neighbor friend and gem.

Yelp
A lovely family owned restaurant in a local strip mall. Attentive service. The menu is quite extensive, although many of the dishes are not my idea of Thai food. However, everyone liked the food. The seasonings seemed more sweet than Thai. I asked for medium spice level for my green curry dish, but it seemed bland, tasting mainly of coconut and a bit of spice. The atmosphere is very nice, with many live plants and Thai art pieces.

Yelp
White Elephant is my go to takeout place. Food is consistently above average. My go to meal is the evil princess and pork rolls. I typically get a spicy level of 3 which is pretty spicy. If you love spicy go for a 5. If you eat in the service is great plus if you want to talk during dinner you can hear everyone at the table. It's has a great vibe.

Jan S.

Yelp
dislike the fact that one cannot preview the menu before going to the restaurant to SIT DOWN and eat in. I don't order for take out and just want to see what there is to eat before going.

Yelp
When you walk into the restaurant, the first you will notice is the theming. Very very well done. We went on a Saturday night. Had to wait a little longer than our reservation time. The staff apologized so many times. The service was amazing the food was definitely worth the wait. Had the grilled Caesar salad and Mandi Curry that was so delicious. A must Try.

Yelp
White Elephant has reopened and is as wonderful as before it closed. The Food is delicious with large portions. We went for lunch and got the $15.99 special which included soup, salad and main course. We were served immediately and kindly with waiter coming back many times to make certain all our needs were met including refilling our water. The restaurant is beautiful with a calming atmosphere. 4 of us ate and enjoyed wonderful different choices. The Coconut ice cream for dessert is recommended. It was outrageously good!

Yelp
It did shutdown for a bit but has re-opened under new management. Let's hope the quality remains the same!

Yelp
We order take out about once a month here as we don't feel comfortable dining indoors a small, crowded restaurant post-COVID. Lately, we have found their food quality has been lacking and hopefully tonight was just an off night. Not sure if kitchen was rushed, or cooks not as good as those pre-pandemic. Soups just okay, entrees overcooked, and Thai noodle dishes seemed just meh. We may have to take a break from ordering from them for awhile.
google avatar

Yelp
All I need to say is the Pineapple fried rice so good perfect amount of pineapple, fresh vegetables and rice 10/10 And the Vegetable spring rolls are delicious

Yelp
Outstanding Thai restaurant. Great food, excellent service, nice atmosphere. Usually reasonably quiet and not too crowded.

Yelp
This is good, but not great, Thai food that is a little pricier than I would like. The entrees (beef green curry) and coconut milk soups were all tasty, but somewhat lacking in depth of flavor and the sense of herby freshness that I associate with really good Thai food. We also had the pad thai. Their menu sternly warns you against ordering it for takeout, so I'm not factoring it into my rating. Flavor was decent, although it was definitely rather congealed, just as they had warned. Probably quite god for dine-in. I do have to complain about their spice scale. You can order most dishes on a scale of 0-10. 5 is supposed to be "Thai spicy." My understanding is that Thai people like their food really, really spicy and that it would be deeply uncomfortable for most Americans. That means that 10 should be off the charts, virtually inedible levels of spice. I ordered my green curry at a 9. It was spicy. It made me sweat a bit. But I've had much, much spicier. This would be a 4 if everything were a few bucks cheaper.

Yelp
This is one of our favorite restaurants, period. The food is amazing, highly recommend the drunken noodles, the Thai eggplant is amazing. The service is always great and it's really a nice setting. 5 stars! The soups are also epic.

Yelp
Did the fixed price lunch special (fantastic deal) Got chicken lemon grass soup, house salad (with peanut sauce!!), and chicken massaman curry. ALL REALLY GOOD!! Curry wasn't spicy at all in my opinion, but others may think so, and it was a low spice rating. Great friendly service, lots of refilled water. Quiet and calm atmosphere. Great place to grab lunch, would love to go back and try more menu items.

Brittany S.

Yelp
Love this place! Food and atmosphere are always great. If you can get in for the lunch special it's a great deal. I've had the various curries, pad Thai, Thai basil spaghetti, Rolling Stones, corn cakes, and many other dishes....I don't have a favorite because it's all delicious. Service is great too.
google avatar

Monique F.

Yelp
I have only about 45 mins for lunch break so it is always great to find amazing food and have it come out quickly. They have 3 course lunch menu which I ordered off. I order soup . salad and chicken basil as the main dish Coconut milk chicken soup. Fresh ingredients and smooth taste The salad was also super fresh. House made peanut dressing as well Chicken basil was hot and fresh. Very tasty and they made sure it wasn't too hot spicy. Would def return.

Todd G.

Yelp
Have liked this place for years ever since they opened, often meet friends there for dinner, was there a few weeks ago and everything great as usual. It's been in the strip mall pretty much unchanged for about 25 years, maybe getting dated, I heard a rumor they might be closing. Oh well, restaurants usually have a limited life span, 25 years is pretty good!
google avatar

Allison K.

Yelp
To preface: I ordered takeout As a vegetarian, I love when menus call out veggie meals. However, the lack of veggies in my food was interesting. The food felt lazy- The veg soup had LARGE vegetables that wouldn't fit on a spoon, and it was only a few veggies (2 pieces of other broccoli, 2 pieces of a carrot). The noodle dish also lacked veggies. A bit disappointing. I would try to go in person and sit down but there's a different Thai restaurant that I like better in the area.
google avatar

Kelly P.

Yelp
Yummy Thai takeout! I got the evil jungle princess with chicken and the lemongrass soup w chicken. The flavor in the lemongrass soup was absolutely SUPERB, and there was a decent amount of chicken in it which was a nice touch. Would 100% recommend it if you're going there. I got spice level 4 (one below "Thai") which cleared up my sinuses as I desired (I LOVE spicy food), but it didn't take away from the flavor. Only taking off a star because the chopsticks that came with the order almost cut me (see attached pic with staple jutting out), so just be careful when you're opening them.
google avatar

Judy S.

Yelp
Don't let the strip mall location fool you. We love the White Elephant for any occasion, but always try to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, etc. there. While everything is delicious, our favorite dishes are the rack of lamb and crab-stuffed shrimp (Rolling Stone). And save room for the mango and coconut sorbets-also outstanding. Always perfection - both food and service - from this Huntingdon Valley byob!
google avatar

Irene G.

Yelp
I love Thai food. I had try the drunken noodle and they were delicious. The spice was just how I like it.
google avatar

Chris J.

Yelp
We received a gift card here so we went for our birthday. The food is unique. Very tasty. I'm a picky eater so there wasn't much on the menu I'd order, but if there is something you can't have, they will accommodate you. Definitely give them a try

Yelp
I had a hankering for Thai while visiting relatives in the area, and White Elephant was among the results in the area. I saw that they had a very promising set of vegetarian options, so it was a no-brainer. The holy basil was exactly the right choice for me--the tofu was on point, the veggies were cooked perfectly, and there was the right amount of sauce. Tip: If you like to put the hurt on it, ask for some extra heat.

Valerie D.

Yelp
I've gotten takeout from White Elephant a bunch and it is always delicious. I also love that you can choose your spice level. It's great!

Anita B.

Yelp
Very disappointed, haven't had food from here in a long time, so I ordered delivery tonight. Food was cold upon arrival; golden calamari rings and dipping sauce were average. Thai eggplant with chicken was awful, sauce tasted like and had the consistency of beef broth. Very little chicken and big chunks of eggplant. Everything had a mushy consistency. Dessert was a coconut snowball, another average item. For $54, including tip, I was not impressed at all. Sorry to say I won't be ordering again.

Yelp
My wife and I went here for the first time in more than 2 years to celebrate our anniversary. I will start this review by saying our memories of wonderful food were not betrayed in any way. The decor has not changed. It remains a strip mall restaurant decorated with elephant everything giving it a strong Thai ambience. The service was attentive without being intrusive. Best of all it was paced to allow us time to enjoy each course without letting the emptied dishes become annoying. It is BYOB and the waiter actually asked if we oldsters wanted one glass or two. And then there was the food. OMG! The menu provides a variety of treatments for beef, chicken, or shrimp. Choosing was difficult because it all looked good. We started with the fondly remembered mushroom soup. Ambrosia. Next we shared a ginger salad. This was definitely large enough to share but was otherwise unremarkable. My wife ordered the Passion, a cornish hen with vegetables and a potato. The meat was almost sweet from the marinade. My wife got no hot spice; absolutely not needed and still deliciously flavorful. I got himmapparn, a spicy chicken dish with onions, carrots, red bell peppers and pineapple. My waiter fortunately asked about preferred spice level. I chose mild which still left me sweating a bit by th end. The heat still couldn't stop me - way too good. We finished by sharing a Chocolate Dome a and waddled on home contentedly. Ii missed going here during the pandemic. This visit reminded me why I wanted to eat here more often. It's a good thing the restaurant is not closer to my home or my social security check would disappear into their cash register. If you like Thai food, you really really want to try White Elephant!

Yelp
I've been here several times in the last years with different groups of people. It's a great BYO. Service is always lovely and the food is absolutely delicious. I'm a vegetarian so it's nice to have quite a bit to choose from. Portions are generous so you usually have some leftover. I've never ordered something (apps & entrees) that I didn't love. Their desserts are very beautiful as well.
google avatar

Maribeth B.

Yelp
Fantastic. Best Thai food ever! Great service and huge portions in such a cool atmosphere.
google avatar

Amanda U.

Yelp
I came here for dessert with my girls and the service was really nice, we got the passion fruit guava flute, banana bread pudding and hazelnut truffle. The designs and presentation/playing was so pretty! The banana bread - you can taste the banana clunks and it was very fresh. The only thing that I didn't like like that was the passion fruit guava because it tasted more artificial. But it was a good way to end the night

Yelp
My favorite Thai restaurant in the Huntington valley area. The food there is pretty dang good. I highly recommend this place if you're in the area & want some good quality Asian fusion food. The owners are very nice & create a welcoming atmosphere. It is a quiet & relaxing environment where you can enjoy your meal in peace.
google avatar

Thomas M.

Yelp
Amazing. Different. Impactful meal. Dine-in. And talk to the owner, interesting life.
google avatar

Patrick D.

Yelp
Good neighborhood joint for tasty and affordable Thai food. I've only been with my family for the lunch special deal, but we all thought the food was well-made and very reasonable for the price. For ~$11, you get a choice of soup (lemongrass/Tom yum, coconut chicken, or jasmine rice), a small appetizer (ground chicken salad, pork spring roll, or house salad), and one of their entrees. Between the four of us, we tried all of their soups and appetizers. The lemongrass and coconut chicken soup were very tasty, not too salty or heavy from the coconut milk. My favorite was the pork spring roll, which was perfectly crisp and didn't skimp on the meat, but the ground chicken appetizer was also tasty. My parents got the basil chicken, which had juicy slices of chicken sauteed with veggies in a tasty brown sauce, and eggplant chicken. Both were good, but I liked the Panang curry most- it was a bit spicy, full of coconut flavor but not too heavy or rich, full of flavor, and had a pretty generous serving of chicken. Overall, for $11 the lunch deal is great. The food is fresh and the service was very attentive; it's nice to have a reliable Thai place around home, and I look forward to coming back to try other specials or their full dinner menu sometime.

Yelp
White Elephant Thai Restaurant has served Huntington Valley, PA, for many years from it's location in a commercial center strip. Their menu is elaborate with separate lunch listings between 11:30 and 2:00. I was there to partake of midday meal and was greeted warmly by the gentleman who served me. The room is attractively appointed with elephant totems and warm curry tangerine colors. I was seated at a table behind the jungle growth of tropical plants separating the waiting/seating areas. On a long term addictive run with Thai broad noodles and elaborate sauces, I ordered their $10.95 lunch of Coconut Soup, Fried Thai Dumplings and Drunken Noodles with Chicken, 'Thai spicy.' The house began to fill as the hour approached 12, and more help appeared from the back. The soup arrived first in small cup. The lovely aroma of coconut smiled seductively. It was excellent, with a few slices of tender chicken, carrot, onion. It was semi sweet and steaming hot. Suspicious beginning. The dumplings were round with ground pork and spicy dipping sauce. They were plump and quite tasty as well. Two for two! Last came the noodles, and unfortunately, the letdown. Plentiful on the large plate, they appeared to have been sitting out too long after wokking, because the top was dry while the bottom of the dish showed sauce. Too, the chicken slices were extremely dry and dessicated. Likely yesterday's bird, reanimated. Disappointing, to say the least. Given that the chicken in the soup was right, the comparison was inevitable and suggested lack of concern. A budding five star experience descended to three and a customer lost. Sometimes the last impression is more powerful than the first.

Yelp
Ordered takeout from here and only got several appetizers but I was very underwhelmed. The crispy spring rolls were a solid 3/5 but I had such high hopes for the money bags and they were just not tasty. I ate one and stopped. My daughter ate one and immediately started gagging. My son said there was no way he was eating it after that. The food was still warm upon arrival and the presentation was nice with little doilies inside each foil container. This was a bust for me though so with so much competition in the area it'll be difficult for me to consider returning.

Yelp
Before I talk about the food, they hands down have the BEST Thai tea in all the state ! I can never get it this perfect and am hooked on it. Second the Panange curry is my favorite and if you get it for lunch you can have an appetizer and soup with this flavor filled dish.

Kimmy K.

Yelp
Food was ok not fresh They are Mexican chef not Thai chef Service was ok Beautiful decor and cozy likes home

Yelp
I don't understand how I've missed this restaurant for so long. It's a treasure easily overlooked because of its shopping center location. We were a table of 5 who were not rushed to decide our order. Two people had the duck & 2 people had the salmon dishes. The food was fresh, cooked well & delicious. The desserts were almost too beautiful to eat (see photos below). The service was excellent. Pricing was in line for a BYOB. I look forward to returning. I'd order the exact same dinner because it was so good!

Carol F.

Yelp
We were at the WE on 7/15 when the power went out for a pretty long time. The staff handled it beautifully and I don't think anyone left! The only thing our friend couldn't have was a potato. The food is always great and the circumstances just added to the professionalism of a terrific place. CF Elkins Park

Yelp
Whether we get take out or eat in, the quality is always amazing. Good size portions and lots of variety in the menu without being overwhelmed.

Yelp
My favorite Thai restaurant. I live in Doylestown, and take the long drive there often. It's fast, the food is great. I am particularly fond of the thai eggplant and drunken noodles

Yelp
I have been to the White Elephant several times but the event I attended yesterday was by far the best experience I've had there. The food, service, and decor are so on point! I'll start with the decor. It's amazing. Soothing colors and sounds are all around you. Elephant pieces are perfectly placed on the walls, sitting on shelves, and surrounding the indoor fountain. I got to enjoy s special menu because I was attending a charity event to support Stu and the Kids. This is an organization based in Chiang Mai Thailand that helps change the lives of Thai youths by committing to pay for education, medical and housing needs to help them advance their education through secondary school, technical school and/or university. So cool! Check it out! Now to food...the food was phenomenal. They typically offer a lunch menu but we had a family style meal and got to sample so many things. The appetizer plate had seafood dumplings, chicken Satay, Corm cake and a deliciously pickled salad. I seriously can not pick. Favorite. They were all delicious in their own way. The corn cake wasn't overly sweet, the picked salad was super tangy. The Satay peanut sauce was perfect! There were a few different entrees served. I sampled 3. Mussaman Curry was very peanuty and served with beef. Pad Thai, and a medium spicy seafood dish. The curry was my favorite. The sauce was denser and went perfectly over the slightly sticky white rice. The Pad Tai was flavorful and presented beautifully. The seafood dish had shrimp, scallops, calamari, and I can't recall what else. It was filled with seafood. We were told it was medium hot but I didn't taste hot spice at all and that's a good thing to me! Dessert was coconut ice. Team and fried banana roils. The perfect sweet ending to an amazing meal!

Yelp
Heard good things about this place so we ordered and it taste horrible. Never again. They really need to take some lessons from House of Thai and learn how to cook. All the dishes was so basic that you can do bbn it at home with some boiled noodles and veggies with ketchup. Really upset about this experience
google avatar

Michael T.

Yelp
Excellent food and service too. Their coconut ice cream in a chocolate shell os the prettiest dessert I've seen anywhere. Rolling Stones (shrimp stuffed w/ crabmeat) is a signature dish and is worth the trip for that alone. I drive an hour to this place, but it's THAT GOOD!
google avatar

Dale T.

Yelp
Great decor and ambience. This restaurant is tastefully decorated with tapestries, lanterns and elephants. When we first entered, the gentleman asked us if we had a reservation then left us for about 10 minutes to search for a table when 3 were immediately available from our viewpoint. We were seated at one of those tables. From here, the situation improved greatly. Waiters were polite, prompt and attentive. The seating may appear crowded but once seated, there is ample space. For appetizers, we had the Money Bags and Chicken Satay. The Money Bags are steamed shredded crab in a fried crispy shell, which were excellent with or without the sauce. The Chicken Satay was tender and the peanut sauce was delicious. The amount of chicken on one skewer was very generous, and there were three skewers. The main courses were less impressive. The Pad Thai was too sweet and somewhat disappointing. The Green Curry was good but the sauce could have been thicker to make it perfect. Finally, the Drunken Noodles were excellent. Perfect spice level and flavor. All the main course had generous portions, and the cook on the meats and starches were just right. Overall, we had a great time and would come back again.

Rachel M.

Yelp
A sweet BYOB place that's perfect for date night, family night, or larger gatherings. I've never had a bad dish and the waitstaff is always so kind and accommodating. I've even brought some picky eaters here and they loved it so much they returned on their own! Can't recommend enough! Also, if you're gluten free you can eat almost everything on the menu! None of my loved ones who are gf have had a problem here which is a great bonus!

Yelp
I've been meaning to check this restaurant out. Two things that I love: Thai and BYOB. Winner winner winner. With it being in a shopping plaza, parking was plentiful and the restaurant is tucked away. We went on a Monday night and while there were others inside, it still have a 'slow' feel to it. The waiters were serviceable and quick to refill and empty glasses. I appreciate that!!! We were able to go in chat and chew without being drowned out by music or anything else. The lobster rolls were tasty nothing spectacular but straight to the point and effective. Now the Shrimp PadThai was bomb ! It was a good sized portion, and super flavorful. With the White Elephant being around the corner from me I plan on making this my first of many visits.

Yelp
I found this place on yelp after searching for vegan food and was really impressed by the various vegan options they provided. I had the Vegetarian Lover mixed veggies dish with tofu and really enjoyed it! My mom ordered the pad Thai which was pretty good but not the best I've ever had. It oddly had an orange flavor to it which was very unique. My dad had the red curry with tofu and it was delicious as well!
