Great ice cream spot with cute mini golf, plenty of parking and cash only-small cafe open weekends

Google
White Farms has a huge amount of ice cream choices, it was hard to zero in on only one. The Hot Fudge Sundae, w/ vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, nuts and a cherry was EXO. The sugar-free coffee ice cream in a sugar cone was also enjoyed. We were taken good care of and served by delightful ’Katherine’. Next time, I’ll have a scoop of the Cantaloupe flavor. Plenty of parking and tables are on the side, under a tent.

I’ve tried the vast variety of ice cream places on the north shore and White Farms is my favorite spot. They offer a large selection of delicious flavors, the portions are old school generous and the servers are patient and kind. The setting is also quite pretty and they have a covered seating area. Check them out and see for yourself.

Google
Once again tried to get soft serve ice cream for the 3rd year. I only live 5 minutes away, and every time I go, its a different excuse. I suggest take the soft serve flavors sign down it's false advertising. I go to dairy queen now. At least they don't lie.

Google
This place is fantastic so many choices to choose from! The seating area is great and it also has a area for the kids to play after eating (the field). Not to mention the mini-golf this place is okay for it if your looking for a quick place to go and not anything fancy. The only thing about this place is the cost but overall it's great!

Google
White Farms Ice Cream in Ipswich has been around for over 50 years and is a place I frequented as a kid. Now, whenever I travel back to this area it is a Must stop for great ice cream. They have over 50 flavors of home-made ice cream both hard and soft serve. Any variation of chocolate is my choice, especially the Chocolate Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup while my wife likes the Almond Joy. Prices are fair and the quantity is large. They are easily identified by the cow on the roof. Plenty of tables for seating and an outdoor tent for shade from the summer sun. Mini golf is also available.

Google
Mini golf is closed at 2:30 PM on a beautiful June Saturday… didn’t bother getting ice cream just grabbed a coffee (decent) and left

Google
Cash only, but DELICIOUS ice cream!! The S’mores flavor was fab and I added chocolate sprinkles for more yummies!! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Solid place for ice cream that just opened for the season. They were more than happy to give us a sample of one of the flavors we were interested in. They had most of the flavors when we visited at the beginning of April. I got a kiddie cookie dough and thought it was very well made. The ice cream was super creamy and the cookie dough was soft (I find that a lot of cookie dough in ice cream is too hard). The sizes run on the large side so be ready to share!

Yelp
3.5/5 stars I checked out his place today after a bike ride and was excited by the flavor selection (and the fact that the flavors are homemade). I got a small- which is two scoops & enabled me to try two flavors. There's a large parking lot with plenty of parking spots. One of the flavors was Outrageous, which was supposed to have chocolate cookies (or brownies) in it. However I found one little piece and then it was basically just chocolate ice cream. If I had wanted plain chocolate it would have been great, but that's not what I wanted. 1/5. The second labor was chocolate raspberry truffle. This was amazing! Chocolate raspberry base with chocolate raspberry truffles and chocolate chunks. 5/5. Prices were higher than I was expecting and it is cash only (there's an atm there if you don't have cash). Overall I would go back, but would ask for samples to make sure the flavors actually matched the description. I was there shortly before closing and it seemed like at least one of the employees (the one helping us) was ready to get out of there, so I didn't feel like I could ask for samples.

Yelp
You know homemade ice cream from the first lick... it was delicious and not too sweet. Interestingly it was as pricey as Chicago for a single scoop.

Yelp
Visited here this past Friday and could not have been more disappointed with the service and lack of knowledge with the staff regarding allergies. I kindly asked if they had any gluten free or dairy free options as I have severe food allergies and the girl stared at me blank with zero expression saying "I don't know". I then asked if she had an allergy list I could see and she again said "I don't know". No expression or care what so ever and looked absolutely miserable. I am an adult so was fine leaving with no ice cream but can't imagine if a child was told "I don't know" if they could have anything. Allergies are an extremely common and important part of a food business and I suggest you educate your staff on the severity of allergies as well as making customers feel welcome. I have never been to an ice cream place who didn't have any clue about allergens so will absolutely not be returning here!

Yelp
So good! My husband and I loved the coffee reo and mocha almond chip and even took a pint home with half and half.

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place but I thought it was good. I really just wanted a chocolate vanilla twist this summer because I haven't had one all summer and I was very heartbroken to find out when I got to the order window that their soft serve machine was broken. A lot of the flavors looked really sweet and I wanted to try the mint Oreo flavor but I asked the person who scoops the ice cream and it turns out they use a lot of food dye and I just wasn't in the mood for like a bunch of green food dye. I tried the vanilla brownie instead and the ice cream was inconsistently smooth with a lot of icy crystals and the brownie was very oily cakey too much too big. I also ordered a small and it was a huge cone. I wish ice cream places would make a small a small small again. If they had had like a peanut butter based flavor I would have liked to try that but they didn't it just seemed like a lot of candy mix-ins flavors.
google avatar

Yelp
Service is very friendly and portions are huge, however the ice cream itself will likely disappoint anyone used to real tastes and ingredients. The custard flavor tastes like it's made with a powdered mix; the rum raisin has never seen rum; the banana doesn't taste quite legit either. The cherry vanilla is made with maraschino cherries, and overwhelmingly sweet. Great location on the causeway, though, plenty of parking, and if you pile a bunch of toppings on, it may not be so underwhelming.

Yelp
Such a generous portion in a quart! They packed it tight and the lid didn't even fit. The caramel cow was a hit for everyone. We had a bowl of mint chocolate chip and key lime too. Highly recommend this little gem.

Yelp
I eat ice cream twice a week at many different places. Yesterday I had the best frappe of the year, chocolate chocolate chip. Sad when it was finished

Pamela R.

Yelp
One of the best ice cream places on Northshore! Lots of hard ice cream flavors to choose from. Love getting the mocha frappe or mint Oreo hot fudge sundae! Delicious.
google avatar

Maria D.

Yelp
Two stars... The regular size hat fudge sundae was the smallest hot fudge sundae I've ever seen. Also, "cash only". Really? I saw a party of eight go up to window, look at the sign, and walk away. They lost a good amount of business with that group. There is a cash machine however there are fees. Disappointing.
google avatar

Terri Lee S.

Yelp
White Farms really does have wonderful ice cream. However, while waiting for my frappe I noticed how dirty the windows, window sills and the cement were. I was there right when it opened so it's not like it was at the end of a busy day. And yes cement around an ice cream place is going to be a little nasty and maybe power washing is out right now because of the drought but this looked long term. No excuse for the windows and sills

Michelle R.

Yelp
They have an awesome variety of ice cream flavors and toppings. They have great service. We love sitting at the picnic tables in the summer to have our treats.

Yelp
Surprisingly that I love this place. I'm super picky with ice cream. My favorite are Bubbling Brooke in Westwood, MA and another small store in Rockport. I have not had any other places that came close until the White Farms Ice Cream! I had 4 flavors and they all were very good. I had Oreo Hot Fudge Sundae kids size which was the perfect size to not get sugar overload. The chocolate chip is as good as Glifford Chocolate Chip flavor. It has a lot of big chunk of square chocolate. The chocolate chip caramel had the right sweetness. I thought it was going to be too sweet but not at all. I also love the vanilla brownie. There were a lot of huge brownie chunk and they were soft. Will definitely come here every time I'm in the area.

Harrison H.

Yelp
Best ice cream around. Consistency is key and this place consistently creates delicious ice cream for any palette.

Cw R.

Yelp
Pro: The ice cream is good, with lots of flavor choices. Con: Expensive: $6 for a single "kiddie" scoop.
google avatar

Robert B.

Yelp
The fact it has been voted one of the Top 5 ice cream destinations in all of New England is not surprising at all. Clearly exceptional and worth a long ride if necessary. They have added a decent mini golf course but it's all about the ice cream here. The quality of each item is great and they give old fashioned - prehistoric sized - portions. The signs say that the banana split can feed a family. It's true. The prices are very very reasonable. I can't understand how they stay in business!

Yelp
This is apparently my summer of ice cream. It's been very hot and humid so that's my excuse. I haven't been to this location in probably two years. We were returning from eating out in Salisbury when my mother got an ice cream craving. There was no line so we stopped. I liked that they had socially distancing in full effect and the woman who served us had a mask on. They have tons of flavors. Recently, I discovered key lime as a flavor and was thrilled to see they had it. It was a bit too heavy on the graham cracker portion but otherwise had a great unique taste and was very filling and refreshing. My mother decided to go the boring route and got vanilla. She didn't really like it and reported it tasted a bit chalky. No idea what might have caused that but she'll definitely get a better flavor next time. I recommend the key lime pie as it's the best flavor I've had in forever.

Yelp
Ice cream taste okay was not a fan of the hot fudge. Wish I had just ordered a regular ice cream instead of a Sunday the sizes were good for the amount of $$.

Yelp
Ice cream and mini golf. What a great combination. After our dinner in Kittery we sought out White Farms for dessert. The location on the Ipswitch line was easy to find and at 8:00 pm on a Thursday, not crowded. The youth behind the counter were attentive and allowed us into the closed part of the business to use the ATM and rest rooms. This is a cash only business so plan accordingly. First the mini golf. Playing a round while camping with the cousins has become an annual tradition. This course is well maintained but not super challenging or visually engaging. The course is also in desperate need of mosquito mitigation. I got bit 10 times in the first 5 minutes. Wear bug repellent. But the ice cream is the thing. After our round of spirited golf we got our dessert. WOW!! The sign says 10 best and boy o boy do they deliver. Smooth, creamy super flavorful and HUGE!! I got some cocojamocha flavor and my mouth is watering thinking about it. Teagan got chocolate raspberry truffle. Delicious. The small is probably close to a pint of ice cream. On a cone!!!! The prices are reasonable. The tables needed some attention while we were there. The trash cans were overflowing. Overall I strongly recommend White Farms for the ice cream. I am sad it is 3 hours away. The mini golf less. It would not hold a young child's attention. Our 14 year olds got pretty bored about 1/2 way through.

MacKenzie B.

Yelp
The location is great! Seats by the marsh and walking trails. The parking lot wasn't large, so if it gets busy, it's hard to find a spot. However, the staff were kind and so quick. The flavors options are great and they have a few froyo options which is what I have to eat. I always appreciate when the froyo options are actually exciting. They're requiring masks right now which I appreciate. The pricing is very typical for the north shore.. meaning it's a treat, not something we get very often. We'd definitely stop by again if we're in that area.
google avatar

Annie M.

Yelp
We got the purple cow fro yo and the mint fro yo. Both were delicious. Generous portions. We'll be back.
google avatar

Adrienne C.

Yelp
Came here today and the older woman working was clearly annoyed to be serving people. They have about 25 soft serve flavors listed but apparently don't have soft serve? When I looked at the menu again to change our order she sighed heavily. Later while we were sitting and talking with other patrons a young boy, maybe 8 years old, scored a hole in one on mini golf on the last hole. The prize is a free cone. And the same woman said because the machine was broken she couldn't confirm he did indeed get a hole in one and refused to give him the cone. An eight year old. C'mon lady. I know it was a hot day but it's ice cream. Summer has just begun, I can't imagine what she's going to be like at the end of August... Go a little further to Down River in Rowley, the employees there are always super nice and friendly.

Yelp
This place is a five star slam dunk must go to ice cream destination. Homemade amazing ice cream. Huge menu, lots of option including their version of a blizzard. In my mind ipswich has the 2 best ice cream stands in the world, this being one. My daughter got the mint Oreo And it's a ten, so minty and so Oreo-ee. Other daughter got the mint chip, huge chunks of chocolate and a 10. Brings a tear tear to your eye. Just so good. Wife got the chocolate milk shake ... my wife is lactose intolerant.... yeah that's how good it is. The pain she endures for the amazing flavor and the hardships the rest of the family has to endure when the lactose ravages her GI.... wait for it, a flippin 10. White farms has a sterling reputation and is a booming business. You should go. So why the one star you might be asking? I can't wait for the ipswich Karen's to take a hot second to stop bitching about parking at pavilion beach or how it's really Cranes beach and slide into my DMs and explain how I am stupid. I'll tell you why I'm standing by my 1 Star ... I ordered the kiddie Reese's pieces. And guess what bitches, it wasn't Reese's pieces. You can't do that. It was some god awful shit knock off whose flavor profile could be best likened to a rabbit turd. Some where between bland and nothing with not an iota of peanut butter. Its a speed bump on my tongues journey to flavor town. And man do they put a lot in. Just turd after turd after turd. Those wonderful dyes bleeding into the ice cream is a nice value add and will probably give me canker soars. You dirty hucklebucks lied to me. I am both poor and struggling with my weight so when my jiggly ass ponies up a saw buck some empty calories by ordering a kiddie Reese's pieces I expect mother f'ing Reese's pieces. Explain yourselves on this public forum. The public awaits. Why did you do this to me? PS. Wifey says I am awful to get ice cream with. Pfffff Don't know what her deal is.
google avatar

Joshua D.

Yelp
Ice cream was fine as it's always been (have been coming here for almost 30 years), but the sizes seem to keep getting smaller and smaller. As of April 2019, this was what we got for the one scoop size, which is now up to $4.25. Seems incredibly high for just about half the size it's always been. Not planning to go back anytime soon.
google avatar

Christina W.

Yelp
The icecream mecka!!! Get a pint, it's way more icecream for a little more than a small. Oreo froyo is TO DIE FOR. They get thier milk from richardsons. Super bomb place. Cash only though which is a huge pain in the ass, but ATM is on site.

Maggie R.

Yelp
The older woman behind the window was very rude. It seemed she was talking down to the younger employees. Just didn't seem like she wanted any part of doing her job.
google avatar

Karen 2.

Yelp
i like this ice cream place but they don't have a lot of the fun flavors that i crave. there is no indoors part either it's really just a booth which is nice for when the weather is nice.. the ice cream is of good quality and staff have never been rude.
google avatar

Melba M.

Yelp
Grrrreat mocha almond chip and chocolate walnut ice cream. Super-wicked creamy! Lost a star cuz I only got 1 almond in an enormous "kid's size" serving. But huge chunks of chocolate & lush mocha flavor. My sis said her choco walnut serving had lots of chopped walnuts & a good amount of chocolateyness - not cloying or too sweet. We raved about the ice cream as we noshed, flying up 128 after a grand beach day out. Totally recommend & I'm def going there again. A kiddie size was $4.50 I think. And it's on RT 133 just outside of downtown Gloucester, or on the way to 133.
google avatar

Mary D.

Yelp
Delicious, creamy ice cream But the ATM was down & we didn't know it was a cash only place. When we scrounged our last bit of cash together, we split a small and asked for an extra cup. "That is not allowed" was their response. Really?! That left a bad taste in our mouth, for sure. I guess I'll stick to Richardson's in Middleton from now on.

Ellen D.

Yelp
The ice cream is always wonderfully creamy, full-flavored, and just the right consistency, and the servings are very generous. The servers are always friendly and helpful. Boy, I wish that we lived closer!
google avatar

Chris B.

Yelp
Boy was this ice cream disappointing. I got Kahlua chip and the best I can say is that it was cold and well formed. Almost no flavor. The chips were vaguely familiar. I didn't bother to finish. I am angry that it cost me $4. The woman who served us was very nice and efficient, though.
google avatar

Linda W.

Yelp
Great ice cream. Only downside is they don't accept debit or credit cards. The cash machine they have charges outrageous fees.
google avatar

Martin H.

Yelp
Great ice cream -- interesting flavors -- large quantities. Loved the ginger ice cream.
google avatar

James A.

Yelp
A friend brought me here starting in 2005. I said how I love going to Hodgies for their sizes. She told me that White Farms is so much better and is typically listed in New England's top 5 for creameries. Once I had my first ice cream from White Farms I became instantly hooked for life. The flavors are wonderful and the sizes are great. Be aware they only do CASH. there is an ATM on the grounds, but from what I've seen it looks like it was one of the first ATM's ever made and I don't know how often it is updated or filled with cash. I always look forward to summer months just so that I can take a trip out here and enjoy their wonderful tasty ice cream. I will add along with some of the other posts I have noticed in the recent years it does seem as though the portions have been getting reduced.
google avatar

joe t.

Yelp
I am very disappointed to say that I must agree with the previous review. My wife and I brought another couple to WF on Sunday, and bragged about the size of the "small", which used to be 2 full-sized scoops. Imagine our dismay when we all ordered small cones at $4.75 each and received one average sized scoop topped with a sort of a mini second "scoop", not much bigger than a golf ball! I asked the server what was going on, and she said they cut way down on the portions because people complained that they were "too big". Patrons are complaining about "too much Ice-cream"? REALLY?

Ellen B.

Yelp
Don't stop here if you're looking for a reasonably priced kiddie cone. They are way overpriced!! Also, there is a decent mini golf area, but they don't maintain it. The water isn't flowing, the greens have branches, acorns, and leaves all over them...just a mess. I called to ask about the mini golf hours- got a voicemail listing their 2017 hours! Wow! I wanted to give them 0 stars but grudgingly gave them 1 pity star, because they used to be good.
google avatar

Natasha B.

Yelp
White farms used to be my favorite ice cream place growing up. And it's probably still the best ice cream in the area! It's all homemade with a huge variety of flavors. My favorites were peppermint stick and outrageous (a bunch of different chocolate items). I think the peppermint stick has gone downhill with the addition of the green mint. There's too much candy and the flavor isn't as pure peppermint as it used to. I haven't had the outrageous in many years. My family lives the mocha almond fudge flavor. I think it's okay. The coffee and pistachio are both excellent. I want to try the mint Oreo sometime. The portion sizes are huge!!! The kiddie is a normal one size scoop. You cannot go wrong with a visit to white farms! Plus they now have activities like mini golf to keep the kids entertained :)
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
I've been here previously and it's been pretty good. Thought since they just opened a location in Gloucester I would pay my respects to the original location I'd most likely never visit again. Got Oreo coffee, the best flavor. It was very good. But, the other member of my party got a soft serve twist. The chocolate part tasted of sour milk, like the milk used in the creation of the soft serve had spoiled days prior. We talked to another patron who had ordered the same thing who also expressed concerns about the putrid taste of the stuff. The thing that keeps this from being 1 star in the coffee oreo ice cream. The staff offered a replacement of a pure vanilla, which was accepted, but until whoever prepares the soft serve is competent not to use rotten milk, we won't be back to this location.
google avatar

Lori W.

Yelp
I usually stop by White Farms to get ice cream after eating at the Clam Box down the street. All of the ice cream flavors I've tried have been flavorful and creamy. During my most recent visit, I got the Ginger in a kiddie cup. It had good ginger flavor and plenty of ginger bits in it. It was HUGE and delicious! They also have a restaurant next door and mini golf. Definitely worth a stop if you're in Ipswich.
google avatar

Doug M.

Yelp
Excellent ice cream. Yum yum yum. Definitely worth the extra drive from Woodman's. White Farms is a permanent stop when we're in the area.
google avatar

Warren J.

Yelp
Good ice cream. It could be a veritable destination if they cleaned the service area and put some effort into customer service training (please and thank you), and decor / environment. Have a look at how other great ice cream stands pay attention to the details. It makes a difference. We will continue to frequent White Farms, but only for the product-- when soft serve is available. Call ahead. The machine was broken for months. It's fixed but today only serving vanilla. Don't expect much more than an attitude that you're a captive audience and you owe them for the pleasure of eating their ice cream. No soup for you!
google avatar

Yelp
A great place for creative stuff, a bit hard to find...do not use the Apple maps or you will end up in nearby field... Steve Jobs, if you can hear this, tell the present Apple folks you are INSANELY bad please help or gOOGLE will steal everything and run the world for their own profit.

Maddie W.

Yelp
Kyle makes best frappes and he loves when I tip him all of the pennies in my wallet!!
google avatar

Vickie C.

Yelp
Good ice cream, but customer service is sorely lacking. They won't answer their phones and their web page is skimpy. They talk more about the miniature golf than anything else. I wanted to order an ice cream cake so had to go there. Once there I was told they don't have a phone (there's one listed on their web page) and I needed 48 hours to order a cake. Which is why I was trying to call, to see what their policy was. A total waste of time to drive there. I needed a cake within 24 hrs so obviously I didn't order one. Very disappointing.
google avatar

Stephanie K.

Yelp
We had our sons 5th Birthday here with his school friends... I can't say enough good things. The Owner and staff were so easy to deal with, the mini-golf was great and the kids loved the cow at the end! Beautiful spot with shaded areas and a great tent! Ice cream might be the best I've ever had. Thank you for making what can be stressful a complete breeze! I highly recommend you stop in here for a relaxing round of mini-golf and some tasty ice cream. Perfect family night out or have a party like we did! Thanks again, we'll be back soon!
google avatar

Thomas I.

Yelp
This ice cream stand has gone downhill steadily. It's too bad because it used to be very good The lines used to be very long. The last two times I've gone here the ice cream is soft, not hard. I think because they need to buy new freezers. The sizes which used to be big have been cut back I think to save on money. We now make the drive to Middleton and get a Richardsons ice cream.
google avatar

Jill B.

Yelp
Premium ice cream for a premium price. Awesome selection of flavors and the creamiest homemade ice cream around. My favorite is butter crunch which always has lots of crunch. My husband loves the blackberry Oreo and caramel cow. Summer hours are open until 10 pm for a sweet treat on a hot night.

Seve I.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years. Seems like the quality is the same but the quantity is much smaller for the price I may have to consider a different location if this is the norm.

Innas E.

Yelp
Best ice cream I've ever had in my life I got the banana and almond joy !!! The girls who helped me were also very patient and helpful !
