The Best Haunted Bars in NYC

"People have been slinging ales at the White Horse Tavern since 1880, making it the city’s second oldest bar. When it opened, it attracted dockworkers who toiled on the Hudson River. In the 1950s, it became a prime spot for writers, poets, and musicians such as Bob Dylan, Jim Morrison, and Norman Mailer. Welsh poet Dylan Thomas was said to love the place so much, he haunts the bar. Maybe he’s attracted to the original woodwork and tin ceiling. A historical landmark, the White Horse is a stop on many NYC ghost tours." - Laine Doss

Where to Eat and Drink After Hiking in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia - Eater DC

"Located in front of the Clarion Hotel just steps away from the Lower Town Trailhead, this sports bar features indoor and patio dining and live music on the weekends. Fuel up for a day outdoors with their “Crabby Pretzel Sticks” topped with house made crab dip and cheddar cheese or beer battered fish & chips, and make sure to try fried green tomatos while they’re still in season!" - Tim Ebner, Kalina Newman

Very nice place to visit for a night out. My husband took me here for a little date night. Food was delish. We ordered fish and chips, crabby fries, and bacon bbq burger. The Mountain Mama Margaritas were yummy. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Loved our waitress.

Google
Deb is the sweetest server and made sure we were happy and taken care of! Kayleigh’s cocktails are absolutely amazing. The lavender martini is the best lavender drink I’ve ever had. This little spot is a must experience in Harper’s Ferry!

Google
This tavern is attached directly to the Clarion Inn, which makes it super convenient for anyone staying there. The food was pretty good. The fries were tasty, and my grilled chicken sandwich with bacon and guacamole was excellent. My wife had a gin and tonic that was given a thumbs up. The Cesar salad was ok. The lettuce was nice and fresh, but it could have used more parmigian cheese, and it would have been better if the dressing was already on the lettuce. Of course, I know some of you prefer it on the side. Everyone else said their meals were ok. My wife was not a fan of the quesadillas. My daughter had a fried green tomato BLT she stated, "sounded better than it tasted," and my other daughter really enjoyed her southwest salad.

Google
The place is nice, atmosphere is good, live music, noisy at times. I would have given it 5 stars, but we have to wait about an hour to get our foods. But, Aimee, our server was very apologetic, her service was good and keep us updated about the timing of our foods. I got the sautéed trout, it was good, my husband the sirloin, it was not bad.

Google
The lettuce was bad . Should have been thrown away. Also the same on some of the burgers for the table. Look at the picture I post. I didn't take a picture of the other foods. The burger was decent, nothing amazing. The mozzarella sticks were fine - the sauce was icy cold. The server was very nice and attentive.. Overall it was fine but would not come back.

Google
Don't waste your time. A host never greeted us. We finally were led to a table after waiting 10 minutes. No one came to take our order after waiting an additional 15 minutes after being seated by a manager who wasn't very engaging. We overheard the waiter at the next table say that he didn't know when food was coming since the kitchen was backed up. Our family was starving and we left. We were there on Saturday night and the restaurant was not full. Also there was broken glass on the ground at the table where we were seated outside. Awful service and don't recommend wasting your time.

My man and I enjoyed our food and experience. Live music on Friday night was really fun.

Google
I read the reviews and wanted to love this place. We were looking for a good burger and our regular Harper’s ferry burger place was closed but man this was not good. Side salad and salad dressing were decent. Service was good but we heard the chef is new and what followed wasn’t great. He cooked our medium and medium rare burgers WELL done and it was just not good at all. Dry and flavorless. The food sounded like it was good before but now I can’t recommend.

Yelp
This was a nice place just outside Harpers Ferry with a lot of great options and they had live music playing. The food was great, especially the southwest salad.

Yelp
We were staying at the KOA close to the White Horse Tavern and fortunately they had a lighted path through the woods to walk/or drive a golf cart between the two places. We decided to go one evening for an early dinner. The restaurant is attached to a hotel and was clean and service friendly. It is not a large place, but has a nice bar and an outdoor deck seating area. On this night there was live music in the dining room. We are fans of live music and the band sounded good, but the volume of the speakers was way too loud for such a small space. Multiple diners commented on how loud it was. The volume was more appropriate for a large ballroom or outside venue. Even though there was plenty of seating inside, we waited until a space opened up on the deck (as did others) otherwise we would have been unable to hold a conversation. The menu has a nice variety. We sampled the wings and the burgers, which were ok. Nothing special but tasty. A decent local beer selection. One person in our group ordered the Cobb salad, but the waitress informed us they were out of hardboiled eggs??? Overall a decent place if you don't feel like cooking.

Yelp
Cute little tavern attached to the hotel I'm staying at. Ordered a Harper's Ferry Sunrise (just ok), but the food was delicious. Got the lump crab steak in a cream sauce with a baked potato and garlic mushrooms. The star of the show was the garlic mushrooms and the lump crab cream sauce. Both were amazing! The waiter was fast, attentive, and friendly. What a gem of a spot.

Yelp
Visited White Horse Tavern recently. We called ahead and requested seating for eight. They agreed to accommodate us. When we arrived, we waited for about 20 minutes. Then they put us in our own room away from the loud live music, which was nice. Our extremely friendly waitress gave us menus and took our drink requests. I requested a milk shake with Bailey's Irish cream. My wife requested sangria, but she didn't like it so I ended up drinking it and requesting another one. We put in our dinner requests and waited a long time for food to arrive. I requested trout with mashed potatoes and green beans. When the food arrived, my wife's french fries were cold, but were tasty. My trout was pretty good as were my mashed potatoes and green beans. Overall, it was a pretty good meal. The service was slow, but friendly and the food was okay. The hamburgers were excellent. I'm glad we tried it, but we probably won't be back.

Yelp
Don't let the location fool you because while this is connected to the Clarion Hotel it is a very solid restaurant serving up some delicious food, great drinks (full bar) & amazing staff. Wings, burgers, crab dip, even the steaks are very good. We've tried the crab soup which is delicious and the crab cakes are solid. Nice outdoor patio area as well. Our go to spot when in the area even if we aren't staying at the hotel (which by the way is a very solid hotel!)

Yelp
Being only a few miles away we come up here when we want a good ole burger and fries. The staff is always friendly and feels like a family spot. Chicken wings are also on point so we haven't ventured too far off these choices. Actually had the club sammich once and it was stacked. Think family diner spot at a hotel just better than average.

Yelp
The ambience was exactly what we were looking for. We were seated right away and even though they were quite busy (a Saturday day evening) we were served right away by a friendly waitress, Sophia. There was live musical entertainment in the form of 2 guys playing acoustic guitar and singing. Fish and chips was great. Hubby got burger which he reported was really good. Prices are on par with the area. Overall, great experience. I recommend this place

Scott R.

Yelp
Very good service, food was good but not exceptional; music was very nice. Prices were fair.

Nina J.

Yelp
Very polite, and happy with the vibes. I just got there from NYC and wanted to eat something, and ordered the grilled chicken. Really good after driving around 6ish hours, !

Ben B.

Yelp
Service was good, food is just average. Prices are high for the quality of the food. You can safely skip this place.

Yelp
This was next to our hotel, and since we like to try local beers, we though "Why not?" I'm sure glad we went in!! Forst off, cheers to Kaley (I hope I spelled her name correctly) who was awesome!!! Excellent server with a great personality. She made us feel very welcomed! They had a good selection of local draft beers. The hamburgers were really good, too! Would definitely recommend stopping here.
google avatar

Yelp
We didn't like the service or ambiance. Would not recommend. Operating hours are not as noted online.

Yelp
I'm a bit late in writing this review. You rarely have high hopes trying a restaurant inside the hotel you are staying at but this place was great. From the appetizer of fried green tomatoes to the burger I got, everything came out hot and delicious. My wife took the safe route of ordering a salad so she missed out, but, was very satisfied. The meal capped off a great day of touring the Antietam battlefield and we were fueled up for our next day's stop at Harper's Ferry.

Yelp
Great service and the food was amazing! A little pricey but well worth it! I will definitely be going back in the near future.

Yelp
Service was great. Wait staff is friendly and attentive. The food was fresh and well prepared. There is a bar and outdoor seating. It is great for friends, get together and family.

Yelp
Just needs a complete overhaul. Menu, seating, staff. Food is inconsistent in portion and taste. It's outdated. The staff is friendly, just not very attentive.

Yelp
Had a nice lunch post white water rafting. Bacon cheeseburger, boneless wings, chicken quesadilla, pretzels with beer cheese. All good. Kids gave their fries high praise - they were seasoned. I enjoyed a pint of White Horse Ale too.
google avatar

Mark A.

Yelp
The Brunswick Stew was the best I have ever had. Great atmosphere as well. Service was good.

Yelp
Best hamburger with incredible mushrooms! Juicy, tender and cooked perfectly. Very attentive and responsive waitstaff.

Dan A.

Yelp
This was absolutely amazing! Highlight of my trip. I ordered a steak quesadilla and it was immaculate. I ordered the chocolate milkshake it was a little pricey but a hundred percent worth it. The service was very good and the environment was great. They have live music three days a week and it adds to the visit. And finally this peach cobbler was a magnificent ending to quite the visit to the White Horse tavern. Highly recommend

Yelp
My wife and myself each an order of wings. They arrived cold and very lightly sauced. The room was freezing and the band was way too loud for a room that size. The vinyl seats in the booths were old and cracking. The only bright spot was our server was excellent! Will not be returning.

Robert C.

Yelp
We had dinner here recently and it was very good. I had the HF chicken and my wife had the trout and both were delicious. They had very good adult beverages options including draft beers. We had excellent service and the price was very reasonable. I would definitely recommend.

Yelp
I came to this restaurant after enjoying my swim at the pool, to join Hubby and his friend for lunch. It's a big place with a high ceiling and a giant TV, mainly for sport lovers. I didn't have a lot of choices about what to order but ended up with a good set. Hubby ordered some chicken wings for us to share. The wing sauce was very good. It's like Thai Chili sauce but the taste was above average. I ordered grilled chicken sandwich from lunch special that's served with a creamy crab soup. The sandwich bread was stamped with the restaurant's name. Now that's a pretty good advertisement and promotion. Creamy crab soup was delicious! Something to brag about so I brag about it. Hubby had a burger from lunch special, so his burger came with crab soup as well. Overall experience was not bad. The service was very good too. Thanks!

Gail B.

Yelp
Bartender was awesome, service was ok. Meal was not good. Grilled chicken salad was a pile of lettuce, some dry grilled chicken, a few black beans and corn. Southwest dressing was mayonnaise. Grilled salmon was way overcooked. Hamburgers were dry and flavorless.
google avatar

Ryan G.

Yelp
Food is decent, wait staff is good. A little far off the beat and path for my taste. I HATE the hotel it's attached to. The Clarion hotel is old, out dated and my room had bugs in it.

Randolph W.

Yelp
My experience at the White Horse Tavern with my friends was phenomenal! The food was good and the service was even better! Zac Rose was our server and man did he wow while at the restaurant! We didn't have to ask for water to be refilled, he was super friendly and personable, and he even tracked me down after I left the restaurant because I left my air pods on the table at the restaurant. I live 2 hours away and began to panic when I realized I left them. Zac was kind of enough to put them in a box and send them to me at no charge! I wish all servers performed the way Zac did. He should be the manager :)
google avatar

Yelp
We were staying at the attached hotel and heard music coming from the tavern. It was a fun vibe, country singer in a bright pink shirt, a few people grooving at the bar, and tvs on all sorts of channels. Our service was really nice and our food was pretty good. Fish and fries were crispy & the beyond meat burger with shrooms was delicious (was pleasantly surprised to see beyond meat as an option, honestly!). Best of all though was the Bailey's milkshake, served in a mason jar with a boatload of whip cream. Not a bad stop if you are in the area !
google avatar

Lea M.

Yelp
I had the most delicious dinner and great drinks here. The chicken with the cream sauce and ham was so moist and flavorful and the mashed potatoes were fresh and tasty. I am very picky about crab dip but it was great...it had a lot of flavor and the bread was great. The white horse cocktail with the fresh brewed tea, bourbon and peach puree was so good and refreshing. The atmosphere was relaxing and my server Sydney was great. Thanks for a great dining experience!

Yelp
Today was the first time we ate here. The staff was super friendly and the food quick and delicious. We are outside and enjoyed the beautiful view. Having a live singer at lunch was nice. We will be back

Yelp
We came here after canoeing. It's a great place to stop after a day on the river. They have a lot of staff so our server was very attentive. Bonus, you can have your dog on the patio. Pretzels were delicious. The beer cheese was okay. My hamburger was HUGE and I ordered the small one. It was cooked exactly the way I ordered it. Side choice was fries or house-made kettle chips. I would have preferred something else as I don't care for either. But, for someone who doesn't like fries, I ate more than one. Hubs ordered the steak sandwich and said it had a really good flavor. He thought the fries were really good. I ordered the daily drink special. It was very good! Our pup was a fan of all the friendly people there. Harpers Ferry is my happy place after relocating to the DC area. We will definitely be back.
google avatar

Katie S.

Yelp
Not what we were hoping for. The beer list was small, and we both enjoyed that there were local beer options and they were good. The food was average. I got a crab cake sandwich and my boyfriend got a burger. His Rodeo burger was supposed to be medium and it was very over cooked, and it was loaded with onions that were warmed but not really cooked. Just seemed like a weird combo of burger toppings for that one. Both meals came with fries which was probably the better part of the meal. I highly recommend the pretzel sticks and cheese! If we went back we would probably just get those and drinks.
google avatar

Yelp
If you want some beer and some high calorie food before you hit the Harper's Ferry hikes down the street, this is your place! Came here with a friend to eat after a long drive to visit Harper's Ferry. It is attached to a hotel so depending on when you come, it could be really busy or not so much. This entire area is sort of in the middle of wine country and no where so keep that in mind when you ask for certain things in the menu like steak, which they were out of. Anyways, I got a tall 22oz beer which was local and good. The cheeseburger was also tasty and a perfect pre-workout for the hike we had planned. I will say there is lots of TVs in the restaurant showing sports I didn't know existed like water polo on canoes and some variation of surfing I never saw before. Anyways, this is probably the closest restaurant to the entrance to Harper's Ferry National Park so can't really go wrong.

Yelp
Visited here recently with some friends after our tubing trip and it only made sense! This restaurant is located less than half a mile away and actually has coupons they give to River Riders visitors. We got a few of the free drink coupons upon leaving River Riders, although our guide said we only need one per table (this was not the case). The overall vibe is cozy and I loved how they had videos on the TVs and projectors of tubing/rafting/kayaking. The service was quick and accessible. Our server was attentive and helpful. The food was amazing! I absolutely loved my pulled pork sandwich. The option to sub in fries/chips interchangeably is perfect (where else can you get this without paying a few extra dollars?!). We also had a seasonal raspberry milkshake and let me tell you, it was EXCELLENT. I'm glad that I decided to split it though, since the food was so filling. I hope to be back when I'm back in West Virginia!

Susan S.

Yelp
The food was average but the service was horrible. Our group arrived (not all at once) during the 3-6 pm happy hour intending to have a couple drinks and dinner as we were staying at the Clarion hotel. The bar and restaurant are in one large room. The drinks and service were ok - we went to the bar to get drinks. At 5:55 we went to the bar to get another couple drinks. The bartender definitely saw us as she waited on other patrons. When it was our turn we asked if we'd still get the happy hour pricing. Nope! It was 6:01 - happy hour was OVER we were told. We got our drinks anyway. A bit later 8 of us wandered to a table. Some stayed at the bar. The server took orders for 4 of the 8 folks. When their food arrived orders were taken for 4 more folks. By this time 4 more had taken a table. They were then told they wouldn't be served and should find another restaurant - after we'd been there for several hours. Our food finally arrived and we paid the bill leaving no tip (tips are for good service and we thought we had poor service and our friends had been turned away). I stopped at the front desk of the hotel to ask a question. The server went into the office and on the way out said "thanks for the tip." We won't go back
google avatar

JoAnne M.

Yelp
The food was good, this review is not a food issue, but management. The White Horse is located at The Clarion. The second you walk in the front door, the smell of cigarette smoke hits you hard. As we knew the restaurant was "smoke free" we went in. The waitress took our order and I asked her about the strong smell of smoke. She told us it was from the adjacent gaming room. I should have left but it was late and we were hungry. I kept my turtle neck sweater pulled over my nose most of the time. Even though the food is good, if you can't tolerate cigarette smoke, don't go, it will spoil your meal. It was GROSS.
google avatar

Jes S.

Yelp
The restaurant is located within a hotel that looks old however the burgers served there are really good. The beer is always cold and service is great.

Yelp
Great place for trivia, drinks, food and social gathering. First time visit with friends and we had a blast during trivia. Had the Grilled Chicken Bacon Cheddar sandwich with kettle chips and can say it was good. Definitely a must and a known hot spot for the locals. UPDATE: Karaoke nights on Thursday night equal unbelievable amount of fun!!! Gab our server was great and even jumped up on stage to joint the karaoke when we asked him to do so. GREAT LOCATION!!!

Thomas N.

Yelp
Made a reservation here for 13 family members to celebrate my wife's 80th birthday. When we arrived they had nothing set up for us even though they weren't very busy. Finally shoved some tables together and seated us. Waitress came with 2 pitchers of water for the table and took drink orders. Drinks finally came after about 20 minutes and we ordered dinner. Took 1 1/2 hours to get our food. In the meantime, we got no visits from our waitress to keep us advised as to the progress of our food. We did get one more pitcher of water when we asked. Everyone was thirsty and hungry. When the food finally came out, most of it was cold and/or over cooked. Most ate their food because we were starved by then and couldn't imagine waiting another hour or more to get replacements. Too add insult to injury, ketchup was spilled on two of our coats hanging on the back of our chairs during the cleaning of the tables behind us. Didn't discover that until we were walking out. The whole experience certainly put a damper on or celebration evening!! This place should get zero stars for both food and service!
google avatar

Mike T.

Yelp
Friendly staff with good service. Burgers are pretty good. I had the hangover burger. The bacon was done perfectly, burger to the right temp on a brioche bun. Only complaint, too cold. Almost felt like the ac was on, in February.

Yelp
This was one of the worst restaurant experiences we had in a very long time. The thing is, we came here a couple years before and the experience was just as bad, but we mistakenly decided we should give it another shot, so we are to blame for that. Let's start with the set up. This mishmash of a restaurant is cluttered and we had to step over some giant "please wait to be seated" sign to get to our table, which was filthy. We ordered drinks and after being told they were out of the drinks we wanted. We ordered appetizers and our meal at the same time. They were out of all the sides we wanted, but we settled on something else instead. No less than 30 minutes go by before we see our server again, when she brings us our drinks. At that time, she tells us they are out of the New York strip steak my date ordered...30 minutes after we put the order in...meaning, our server hadn't even bothered to put the order in yet. We were finally served our appetizers. They cream of crab soup was tepid and very watery. The other food we ordered was alright but after an hour of no main entree, my date got his to go--it wasn't even worth it at that point, since the staff was already cleaning the floors around us. Do yourself a favor and don't bother going to the bathrooms--very dirty with overflowing trash cans. In sum, the service was awful, the food (at least what they had of it) was garbage, and the restaurant itself is filthy.

Yelp
Hours changed to Mon-Wed 4pm, instead of opening at 12pm, they should post it somewhere

Yelp
Excellent meal, prompt service and well priced. Stop by, you won't be dissapointed at all.

Yelp
UPDATED REVIEW: Under new management. Same awesome bar tending (Ally especially). Brand new fire pit and patio. Food slowly but surely getting good again. Burgers should always be grilled, never fried. But all in all going back to what worked! Please bring back garlic fries. Kudos on vast improvement. Also, keep the karaoke going. So much fun!

Bridget C.

Yelp
Went for the first time in quite a while. The mozzarella moons were cooked great and were delicious. For main entree, ordered Dragon's fire burger. Absolutely delicious and cooked as ordered. Great draft beers on tap and great service.

Sharon C.

Yelp
Cozy atmosphere, attentive staff, and good food. The cocktails were delicious. Look forward to returning to this little tavern attached to the Clarion Inn whenever I am in the area.
google avatar

Kathleen E.

Yelp
We walked over from the KOA campground. We thought it would be bar food. However, my husband ordered the steak and we were very surprised that the food was very good. The waitress was very nice. I had the chicken fingers and that was also good.
google avatar

Morgan B.

Yelp
Very disappointed. Visiting from out of town. Came for happy hour after a long hike and was met with non happy hour prices. We ordered 3 appetizers and were charged full price instead of half off and our waitress did not offer to fix it for us.
google avatar

Lee S.

Yelp
I hate to say this, but this was literally the worst restaurant meal of my life, and I am usually happy with almost anything. I came here with 3 friends, and we were starving for any kind of hot meal as we had just biked 70 miles that day. Everything we were served was bland, pre-made, seemingly microwaved food that was still slightly cold. Chicken, steak, mac and cheese, broccolli, fish and chips -- all slightly cold. Even the tea was lukewarm. Clearly it was all pre-made food and had been heated up, but not enough. My soup suspiciously tasted like it just came out of a Campbell's soup can. Microwaved TV dinners would have been just as adequate as the food we got here. The server was nice, but nothing could save this awful meal.
google avatar

Rachel J.

Yelp
No no and another no! I was excited to try the food as my friends had said how great it was! But when my food came out, it was not hot. It did not have any flavor whatsoever. I also had a roach on my table!!! It walked right across it and stopped in front of me. Definitely a roach!! I dont know If it came off of my food, but I was not willing to finish it. Avoid!
