Good brews, great food, great service, all partnered up with lovely weather made this a perfect end to our day. The deets: we had a beer flight, then picked two drafts after that. No need to go into beer particulars since I'm sure the brew menu changes. But the standouts for us were the brown ale and the barleywine. Now for food - based on reviews we got the kimchi fries with brisket (HOLY HELL they are good!) and the cacio e pepe pizza (also excellent!)
Let's talk about kimchi fries. First, I'm usually not a fan of this concept. I've had them a few times in other places and I usually get tired of them pretty quickly. But the mound of amazement at White Labs left me sad that I couldn't stuff any more into my belly. For me these define what kimchi fries aim to be everywhere else but fail to achieve. The fries are crisp yet tender, the kimchi is absolutely perfect and not overpowering, the sauce is an accompaniment and doesn't drown the dish, and the brisket is smoky and salty and tender. A guy in line saw our plate and asked if that was the kimchi fries, and when we said yes he said "oh now I'm excited!" Yes sir, you should be.
The cacio e pepe pizza is so good, and I'm not a white sauce pizza person. I had to talk myself into this, and I wasn't disappointed. My husband - also not a white sauce pizza person - dug in right along with me, with gusto. The lemon flavor is pronounced enough to balance the arugula and garlic, but not enough to make the pizza bitter. And the crust.... If you are reading this you've probably seen the other reviews that rave about the crust. It's no lie. I so often leave the extra crust on my plate elsewhere, but not here. Every. Bite. Is. Beautiful.
