The 14 Best Bars in St. Paul, Minnesota | Eater Twin Cities

"The White Squirrel, stationed on an unassuming block of West Seventh Street, is one of St. Paul’s best (and most low-key) bars for live music, especially local acts. Slip through the door, grab a Gold Rush or a pint at the bar, and snag a seat near the stage. There’s a great patio out back, too." - Justine Jones

You want a place to see music? You want to hang on the best patio in St. Paul? You want inclusiveness and culture and to meet people of all backgrounds? You want a great, local beer selection and amazing hand crafted cocktails? Well then you best get yourself to The White Squirrel! I’ve been going here for good times since they opened, it’s THE neighborhood place to be!

Stopped in Saturday afternoon to catch a live gig. What a cute and cozy venue! There was bar seating, a few booths, some small tables then there was more seating closer to the stage! Bartender Chris was absolutely delightful ....and confirmed my initial notion when I saw him!! The White Squirel is one of three bars the owner has, another one is Amsterdam... where I had met Chris in July! There are two bathrooms, right across from the bar, between the two side doors. I think the bar did a great job w acoustics! Two little kids walked out covering their ears but adults didn't mind. White Squirrel has such a comfy neighborhood bar feeling and I quite enjoyed the couple that found a little room to dance! It got a little busier as the bands played but not uncomfortably crowded. There is a small parking lot so if it's busy you're looking at street parking, which is ample. Thanks White Squirrel for a wonderful afternoon of live music while I met up w old friends and chatted up your friendly bartender... certainly planning to make you a regular stop.

Google
One of the best dive bars off named after an albino animal!!! Band was playing fantastic music, vibes were immaculate, and the beers were flowing. Wish there was more room but nonetheless, couldn't ask for a better spot on a rainy Saturday afternoon!

This is my favorite bar in St Paul! White Squirrel has live music every night, and it is open late! It has a cozy atmosphere that makes it easy to talk to people and make friends.

It's a bit of a small place but people weren't rude or pushy when I was there on a Friday night and it was mostly packed. The bartenders are attentive and friendly so you don't feel like you're anywhere you're not welcome. I liked that all the beers are the same price and at $6 a beer you can't really beat that for the quality and the service as well. Well worth a shot and a visit. They sometimes have live music too which is a nice perk. It's a little smaller but it's cozy and a nice place to meet. If you come here during their 4-6PM Happy Hour, which does happen on Saturday!!! You can get a beer for $4, which makes it truly affordable!!! Not all beers are on happy hour but some usually are. Patio is very nice in the summer and again, very chill.

Took in a show featuring three local musicians at this small but mighty music venue. The space is smaller than I expected and a “shotgun” shape, or long and narrow. Which causes some crowding. The shape of the space creates some challenges with getting a view of the stage and seating is limited. The sound was excellent and well balanced for the space, never too loud or sharp. The beer list is adequate and offers a range of styles. No food or food trucks around when I visited. But overall patrons were nice and eager to have a good time. I enjoyed it and will return.

Yelp
Mind you...I'm writing this review after only 15 minutes here. I start with 5 stars and so nothing to disappoint me yet. I ordered an Aviation, bartender hadn't made one in 3 years...but pulled it off. Thank you. The venue is small, cozy, good vibe...welcoming. My drink is good.

Yelp
Solid neighborhood bar in the West 7th neighborhood of St. Paul. I'm from out of town, but my sister lives a few blocks away and tells me the bar is named after an albino squirrel named Kevin that lives in the neighborhood. Sounds legit. Or she's just messing with her little brother. Who's to say? We came with a small group on a Sunday night and sat at the booth by the window. I asked the bartender what local beers they had and he said everything on tap was local, and let me try a beer made right up the road. I love a local bar that supports local breweries. It was incredibly pleasant sitting in the booth in the small space. The other side of the bar has a small stage for live music and I can imagine it would be even better watching a live show here. Cozy atmosphere, super friendly bartender, great drinks, space for live music... bars don't get much better than this.

Yelp
Cozy and friendly staff. The bartender was able to make a drink that wasn't on the menu for us. Live music sometimes. I'd come back.

Yelp
White Squirrel is a cozy space with a really cool aesthetic. There are typically live bands on weekends, which is a ton of fun. The booths are set up so that you can typically still have a conversation, even when a band is playing on stage. They have a wide selection of drinks; the cocktails are really tasty, they have a bunch of THC seltzers to choose from, and plenty of beers on tap. Last time we were there, I had a THC seltzer and didn't want to mix, so I tried their N/A cocktail. It was refreshing and not too sweet, kind of like a medicine ball tea or a hot toddy (obviously without the whiskey flavor). The bartenders have always been helpful and kind, even when the bar is packed. Overall, this place is one of my favorites.

Yelp
I don't often drink in South Saint Paul... but when I do, it will now be at the White Squirrel. Ended up at this place on the suggestion of a date, and I'm in love... with this bar! From the outside, it looks total dive, and the vibe inside is dive bar, but dive bar gone upscale, and with two major selling points. First off, all the beers are local to MN, and they're good beers. I don't even think they have Hamm's or Grain Belt, though probably they do and it's just hiding. Second, there's a whole genuinely good cocktail menu, including at least two barrel aged options... and they're $10 each instead of the $15 you'd get asked for at a froufrou place! There's no food besides chips, and it's dark inside. This is a place to drink and maybe listen to live music, the end. But it's great for that, and I'll totally bring friends here.

Yelp
Cozy and cool vibe. Great alcoholic and non choices. Elevated stage is great to see the entertainment. (The em's ROCK the place!!)

Yelp
We decided to go here last minute for a local ska show last night. It is a very small venue, however we were able to get a bar spot and it was a blast seeing the bartenders working their magic. They were very good at making signature drinks and we very fast at what they did and added some spark with the way they made every drink. The sound system was good for the concert, but I would have preferred a larger area for standing room. I'm not too sure about a parking lot, but was able to find street parking that was free after 6pm. The outdoor patio was great, however the food truck had a very large generator that made a lot of noise. We spent our time mostly inside so didn't affect us too much.

Yelp
If you aren't aware, albino squirrels are prevalent in the west 7th neighborhood. Strike that - there is one white squirrel named Kevin who can be found all over the West 7th neighborhood. When I heard about this place, I got excited. A new bar based on a local inside joke." - loved the idea. And a new place with live music, even better! After a visit, there's some things I can definitely get behind: staff are friendly, the white squirrel artwork is on point, and the drinks themselves are unique in name and ingredients (and pretty decent). The band that happened to be playing while I was there was not great - ambient music that was far too loud. And the space itself has a musty sort of odor that old bars just can't seem to lose (you know what I mean). But I'd say I'm pretty glad to have this new addition to St. Paul!

Yelp
Each drink was poorly & quickly made - the final drink had the "garnish" of an orange peele fall off due to his toss of annoyance. My guy literally shook his whole body in a scoff of annoyance when I ordered my drink. This bartender who works often - I've seen him with his bandana on each time. How does this man qualify to bartend... simply disappointing. The level of annoyance he had to make a drink that took him less than a minute blew my mind. My man needs to get a new gig if this is how he chooses to serve his customers. If I could give 0 stars right now I would've. Disgust of service at its finest. Tipped SOLELY in hopes that this man is tipping out his bar-back - who was genuinely a kind person.

Yelp
Went for a singer/songwriter rounds. Cool place, obviously very green. They only had one bartender at the time, and it took a while to get a drink, especially for the small venue. Great location though. It's not my favorite bar in St.Paul, but definitely not a bad choice.

Yelp
Laidback bar inside and a wonderful dog-friendly patio outside to sit and enjoy their lovely cocktails. Big recommend!

Yelp
Stopped in last night to the recently opened White Squirrel Bar on West 7th in St Paul. Having been to the 331 Club many times I was curious to see their new St Paul sister bar. It is pretty small and is new and clean but still has a 331 vibe to it including free music. The Carnegies (who we happened to see at First Ave's best new bands a few years ago) were playing and it was fun to be sitting in a bar listening to live music again. The bartenders and owner were super friendly and effecient. They have a small but varied tap list and of course tall boys of Hamm's and even a number of n/a drinks so everyone was able to find something to drink. They have their own cocktails too which we didn't try. Don't quote me but I think they have the $3 happy hour till 6 like the 331 Club as well. Will defintely stop in again.

Yelp
I always give this place the benefit of the doubt and they always prove me wrong. Tonight I witnessed this man pour a drink on a woman and they did nothing about it. We had to convince the bouncer to even say a word to them and they were still apprehensive. The only thing they said was "well he's a regular" and let him stay. Absolutely ridiculous and no way to run a business and make your guests feel safe. The "bouncers" if you could even call him that were too afraid to talk to him... it seems that they don't even care about their music scene but the industry bar that it becomes past 12. Don't waste your time it's a joke. What a disappointment to West 7th

Yelp
Fresh! New and clean space! Excellent service, super fun cocktails. They also have a great patio! Prices are higher than other West 7th Bars, but fair compared to most large city venues ;)

Yelp
Great addition to the area. Full bar with an intimate small stage towards the back. The space itself is newly renovated. My guess it was most recently office space, but it was obviously a home decades ago, probably. The staff is friendly and I enjoyed the music both times that I've visited. From what I understand, the have live music every knight. It's close to a lot of other bars and a half a block away from Keg & Case, so a variety of eats is not too far away.
