The Jersey City Delivery & Takeout Directory

"White Star is a neighborhood bar where you go for a burger, wings, and a bartender who’ll listen to you complain about your boss. You can still get the same great wings and burgers, but now you’ll need to eat them while complaining about your boss on Houseparty." - matt tervooren

White Star Review - Jersey City - New York - The Infatuation

"What is the nature of consciousness? Why did Val Kilmer and Cher break up? And why are there so few places that serve great buffalo wings? When these questions - specifically the latter - keep us up at night, we go to White Star to remind ourselves that everything’s going to be OK. The meaty, juicy wings here are great, as are the burgers, fried chicken sandwiches, and other simple, well-executed bar food at this tavern in Paulus Hook. Sit outside during brunch, or watch football at the bar while drinking a very good cocktail with mezcal, ancho chile, and pamplemousse." - Matt Tervooren

Thoroughly impressed with White Star Warren St! Decor is super cozy and love all the greenery through the restaurant. Menu is expansive with a ton of great variety. Love that they had several mocktail options as well. Now for the food: YUM. We got the pretzels+queso, spicy vodka rigatoni with breaded chicken+burrata, and one of the current burger specials (Gouda, pickles, peppers, secret sauce) but with turkey burger and truffle fries. Every single thing was high quality and delicious. Overall, SO glad we stumbled up on this spot. Will definitely be back to try more of the craft burger menu!

My 2 best friends threw a surprise party for me at our favorite local spot and White Star was so accommodating and kind! We were a really loud and excited group and they were so kind to let us have the upstairs area to ourselves. Our waiter, Ryan F (according to the receipt), was beyond patient and organized. He was able to coordinate the orders of 20 spinning humans as we all ran around the upstairs of the restaurant socializing, taking pictures, and eating. Food was delicious as always! Thanks White Star for the best birthday ever!

Google
Nice sitting out for a brunch today. Comfy seating. The buffalo wings tasted excellent. The Egg Benedict was just okay. The parched eggs cooked beautifully but the ham was way over dry and the biscuit was old. The home fries was cold. The salad though was very fresh. Overall, a fair place to have brunch.

Google
I ordered the Big Star off the brunch. It was good, no complaints about the food. However, the menu online and in person lists the price as $13. The check came back as $16. It's decent at that price, but being dishonest about it is really unfortunate and left a bad taste in my mouth after having a tasty meal.

If you’re looking for an unforgettable burger experience, this place is a must-visit! From the moment you walk in, the vibrant energy of the atmosphere hits you — the wood ceiling adds such a warm, cozy feel. The staff are top-notch, and our waiter was incredible, making the entire experience so much more enjoyable. Now, the burgers… WOW! They’re juicy, packed with flavor, and the portions are more than generous. Every bite is a perfect blend of deliciousness. Whether you’re here for a casual bite or a night out, this spot will not disappoint!

I can't believe I've lived here for 6 years and never visited this place before. First of all, I loved the service. The waiter was really nice and took great care of us. The outdoor dining experience was great, and I think the indoor area looks pretty nice too. I was warned that the wait for the roast chicken would be 30 minutes, but I still wanted to try it out—and it was totally worth it. The skin was super crispy, and the meat wasn't dry at all. All the veggies underneath were super tasty together with the chicken. The gravy/sauce complemented the chicken and roasted potatoes perfectly. My partner had the Philly cheesesteak, and it wasn't bad at all. I've heard a lot of good things about the burgers, and I will definitely come back to try them.

Google
Always a standout no matter time of day or year. Today was EXCEPTIONAL, picked up a Shrimp Po’boy and Vodka Chicken Parm sandwich. Both sandwiches come on fantastic Italian roles. The chicken park was outstanding, great breading and a ton of cheese. Speedy service and the bartenders are always top notch.

Google
Extremely disappointing and bland food! We had the Wild mushroom flatbread which was just bad - stale, limp arugla, a weird sweet cheese and bland, cheap truffle oil. We also had the Hamilton burger which was again, bland - please season the meat guys! The bun was stale around the edges. I'd requested no onions on both dishes and they still came with onions! The beer was nice but, everything else is disappointing.

Yelp
This is a perfect casual date night burger spot. The food was great as well as the service. They also have happy hour from 4-6!

Yelp
I come here some times when meeting friends for a quick one in the neighborhood. Consistent food, ok service. Nothing too special about the ambiance here, pretty basic neighborhood joint, but we like it. This past visit, some of the couscous was undercooked and hard/crunchy though which is atypical. Usually cant go wrong with the chicken and the salmon, two best entrees on the menu.
google avatar

Yelp
First time I came here was good. Second time was a disaster. They do not take cross-contamination seriously. I got a burger with a GF bun and a Caesar salad without croutons. It came out with croutons and said I needed a new salad. They brought it back after just having taken the croutons off and they missed crumbs. Had to ask them for a brand new salad and move my burger to a diff plate, even though I really should have asked them to remake it after all that. They did take off the meal from the bill which was nice but still not a fun way to have a meal and risk getting sick.

Yelp
$18 for the shrimp appetizer. They weren't even full pieces and that was the most annoying part. Am I being a yelp Karen or is this ridiculous?
google avatar

Sara G.

Yelp
Very friendly and fast service. Outside patio is spacious and fully shaded. Black bean burger was great, garlic parm fries well seasoned with a spicy chipotle aioli, and super fresh kale Cesar salad.

Yelp
Nice looking neighborhood bar with interesting food choices. We ordered the fried pickles to start, and they were very good. I had the salmon burger as my main and was disappointed. Not much flavor at all.

Yelp
Walked in on a hot humid Sunday afternoon with a large group of 10 adults. Host was super friendly and accommodating, he organized a table and promptly seated us. Our waiter came over immediately with water and took our drink order. Decent selection of beers which were ice cold and perfect to watch the Euro Championship. Our waiter let us know the place is known for their burgers which many of us ordered. Fresh made patties. The steak sandwich and vodka sauce chicken parm were great options too. If you're looking for a great burger, beer and great service, you can't go wrong at White Star.

Yelp
We had the Essex Burger($19) and a fish and chips($19) for dinner. The staff were all very nice, friendly, and competent. The service here is always better than what I expect. The Essex Burger was delicious. The blue cheese had a nice flavor. The bacon was tasty. It is reminiscent of the flavors often found on chicken wings. And the burger was cooked to a perfect medium-rare. I've had the Hamilton several times before, which I love. However, the Essex is my new favorite. My wife almost always gets the Essex, I should have tried it earlier. The fish n' chips were almost as good as fish n' chips you might find in the freezer section of a budget supermarket. I don't know how to describe the texture, it wasn't soggy, but it wasn't right. The Tartar sauce was completely flavorless, which was confirmed by my wife. There wasn't enough fish, which turned out to be a blessing. A fish lost its life for this, it's plates like this that make me consider becoming a vegetarian like my nana. But then I tried the cole slaw and almost gagged, yuck. Fish n' chips was such a huge L, that I'm not even going to consider it in my rating of the restaurant, it was that bad.

Yelp
One of the best places to get a burger in jersey city. I also love their Cobb salad and Buffalo cauliflower bites. Very casual place, good place for groups, kids, chill date. Love all the people who work here, been going here for years.

Jon D.

Yelp
Been coming here for a long time. The Salad Bowls and portions on fries have been reduced by the owner and it's noticeable. The price remains the same at $18 for a Cobb Salad that seems like a side salad now. As a regular customer, I won't be coming back as the value is no longer there.

Yelp
I've been eating at this place on occasion for a couple of years, it's a burger joint. This past visit was disappointing enough to pass along to fellow yelpers. Not crazy busy when I was there. Service at bar was super slow with bar staff that was apparently not happy. What happened to service with a smile? Severe lack of hospitality.Food was mediocre at best.

Yelp
Horrible customer service. I called in 53 minutes before restaurant closes to order a sweet potato fries to go. Then got hang up immediately without any explanation. Can anyone tell me what went wrong.
google avatar

Jason P.

Yelp
Go here very often, and the food is always amazing and consistent. The menu is pretty diverse so you can get bar food type appetizers, burgers/sandwiches or even a chicken/salmon type dish. They make a good espresso martini and if you go trying the fried pickles are a MUST (seriously I don't know how they make them but it's miles above any other fried pickles I've ever had). The pierogi appetizer is also really good, but it's a special so not always available!

Yelp
Good vibes, great music (never too loud) and really chill atmosphere for dinner. Best later in the evening for date night when the local underage humans are in bed. Spaghetti squash (dinner only) is the best thing on the menu. Delicious, flavorful, ample portion and lovingly prepared--every time.

Yelp
White Star is an awesome spot for a casual date night. The food was great (highly recommend the burger) but what stood out even more was the ambiance & the service. The waiters and host were extremely friendly and kind. And what I really appreciated about this restaurant is how quiet it was. It was super lively and packed for a weeknight, but my partner and I were able to have a lovely conversation without having to scream over loud music. I was very impressed by the vibes at White Star and I look forward to going back soon!

Yelp
Outstanding food and waitstaff. Lovely ambiance waiter on Saturday lunch went above and beyond to make experience rememberable. Highly recommend, will be back!

Yelp
One of the best burgers I've had in a while. mind you I am still new to the area, tons more to explore. The ambiance of the outdoor seating area was perfection. Great balance the of quietness meets city living as the city rail passes by. Service was great, my waiter was super attentive. Great spot for my solo dining thanks for having me yesterday.

Yelp
Nice outdoor seating area, good burgers and friendly service. I do wish there was more sauce on the burger, but I still enjoyed it.

Yelp
Can't go wrong with White Star on Warren Street for a slamming burger and a chilled pint of your favorite brew. Always a solid spot, and my primary go-to for a burger and a beer.

Yelp
tl; dr: simple, low-key, no frills brunch in JC. came here late Sunday afternoon and the place was still decently packed. we opted to sit at the bar and had the following: -eggs benedict: nicely poached eggs, good hollandaise (perfect consistency and flavor), and good portion size. -big star: two eggs any style (bf chose over medium), choice of breakfast meats (bacon, sausage, or ham), multigram toast, and home fries. bf liked it and had leftovers to take home. -americano: wanted brewed coffee but they didn't have it, so i opted for americano instead and this was pretty good. our bartender was attentive and timely. portion size was good and well-priced. we liked this place and will return!

Yelp
White Star Warren is OG White Star's rich sibling. In essence they are the same, but Warren street's patrons are a bit more respectable and well heeled. That said I always find their space welcoming and cozy, even when it is fairly busy. I also love the private room upstairs for small gatherings. Stopped by recently to try the new specials spicy rigatoni and pierogies. Food was pretty good as usual, and the portion size of the rigatoni was generous. Service was great as usual.

Yelp
I haven't been to White Star since before COVID19 and wanted to check it out again with my friend since it's so close to the lightrail. I always loved the look of the place and I like how they added dividers between tables. They are taking some precaution. They did not check temperature but all staff were wearing masks. The hostess was welcoming and we were seated very quickly. Our waitress was very nice and catered to our table quickly throughout the evening. Me and my friend got the Winter Punch which is a rum drink and it was pretty tasty. We ordered the buffalo wings for apps and it was delicious! Never disappoints. Perfectly seasoned and cooked. I do wish there was more buffalo sauce on them...it was all sitting at the bottom. For my entree I ordered the White Star Burger and I did not realize until afterward but the waitress never asked me how I wanted it cooked. Sucks because it came way too undercooked for me to love it but I still finished it all. Lots of good flavors and I love me some caramelized onions! The fries were good, nothing great about them. They could've use more salt tbh. My friend enjoyed her Shrimp Poboy and it was huge for her to finish in one sitting so she took most of it home. Overall I would recommend this spot for a chill atmosphere and a place to have conversation because luckily the music wasn't so loud as other places I go. Do get the buffalo wings!!

Adriana D.

Yelp
Food is good / Ambiance is a little noisy but nice/ service depends on how lucky you are.

Yelp
Always a good meal here. The past few visits I told myself I'd try something new, but I can never resist ordering their Paulus Hook burger (portabella, carmelized onions, Swiss, truffle mayo). It's such a rich and juicy burger, and I loved the truffle and mushroom flavors with it! My friends like their other burgers/sandwiches too, and we've never been disappointed. I'm also a fan of their fries, which are golden thin crispiness...just how I like 'em! They also have a solid drink selection; during my last dinner here, I had their frozen drink of the day, which was an aperol spritz. Definitely on the sweet side but still a nice cold drink in the summer!

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch on a Tuesday. Happened to be Valentine's Day. Not very busy but the staff was on point. Burgers are the go to here and the dbl cheese was out selection this trip. Swapped the American cheese for Pepperjack. Yum. Started with the Black Kale Salad. Nice portion and lightly dressed - perfect. Always consistently good!!

Yelp
Had an excellent dinner tonight at this amazing restaurant. Tammy the tornado had the white star burger and I had sliders. Doesn't sound spectacular but it was! They use some high end meat that's used by the Yankees according to our waiter who was awesome too. Solid five star experience. Will be back again before we leave to continue our around the country "Great Dirt Loop" RV trip.

Yelp
"I don't have time to look for your f**king scarf" I was a patron at White Star Warren Street location for my birthday this evening where my family and I spent hundreds of dollars to celebrate, including a generous tip. This is a place where I have celebrated birthdays, graduations, and engagements over the years. A local favorites from when I lived in Jersey City. The food was expensive and bland, but this wasn't really an issue as we were happy to be together, support a place that meant a lot to us, and celebrate . I recently moved out of state and traveled hours to see my family for the first time in months and enjoy my birthday evening. Unfortunately, we needed to return to the restaurant to look for a lost item (a scarf). The hostess helped us chat with our server who completely disrespected us with "I don't have time to look for your f**cking scarf" and walked away to drop off a few sodas. As a former restaurant industry worker- I get it. It's Friday, you're swamped. However, as a former industry worker, this is unacceptable. All was needed was a "hang tight, I'm swamped. Give me a moment". Instead, my request was met with hostility in front of a packed restaurant. It was extremely embarrassing. I understand that a lost item is not the servers responsibility, but there is something to be said about an established that hires servers who curse at you in front of the entire main floor of the restaurant, including at their colleagues and in front of children. The disrespect from this employee has cost White Star any future business from me.

Yelp
Excellent burgers. Wife and I decided to go for burger in our neighborhood. After some looking around this place stood out. It is a beautiful Saturday afternoon and we got lucky with an outdoor table. My wife ordered Paulus Hook with fries & I had the Greenville with salad. Service was excellent, we loved the burgers , the salad was very fresh. The fries was ok, not great! We will definitely be coming back here for burgers

Yelp
Hard to believe I haven't reviewed White Star Warren. I eat here all the time. The reason I eat here all the time? It's just a reliable spot. I can confidently say that I have never had anything bad to eat here. The space is large yet cozy. Even when it's packed it never feels hard to snag a spot. The service is friendly and speedy. It's pretty much just a win win every time. Some of my favorite eats are the buffalo cauliflower and wings, the sliders, and the fried chicken sandwich. The burgers are juicy and always cooked to perfection. Wash everything down with one of the many unique beers offered on draft. It's always cool to see taps that you don't normally see around town here. One of my favorite spots in JC, always!
google avatar

Jess C.

Yelp
We had ordered mussels and one other appetizers, too hungry and forgot to take pics. The main course came in too appealing not to take pics. I was only here for brunch before but the food this time is out of this world. Lava cake is a bit sweet but my friend enjoyed it very much. Overall good experience. Loved the server. There r 2 mid size tvs for entertaining. Love this neighborhood style restaurant. Definitely going back soon
google avatar

Megan H.

Yelp
This is one of my go-to spots in JC. Great burgers, fair prices, and cozy atmosphere. I highly recommend getting the truffle fries-- they're very crispy with the perfect amount of truffle. I always get a burger of some kind, and the double double cheeseburger is my favorite so far (I'm a sucker for a classic cheesy burger with sesame bun), but they really are all great and juicy. They also have really good fried pickles (chip version with great pickle to breading ratio) and buffalo cauliflower bites. I might recommend making the cauliflower a little more "buffalo-y" but they're very tasty and crispy, not mushy like some other places. Great spot!
google avatar

Craig B.

Yelp
Great brunch - superb service and atmosphere. Probably the best burgers in JC. Good place to bring family or to just go for a quick drink and a bite.
google avatar

Yelp
Came here for dinner and have been wanting to for some time . The decor is that of an upscale fine pub as it relates to the food ( which is excellent ). The menu is diner/pub inspired but don't let it fool you. We ordered drinks , Buffalo cauliflower and burgers. All were simply perfect and just what the doctor ordered - throw in the perfect fries and I was a happy camper . Service was very good as well . Really great place for some stellar , high end comfort food!

Yelp
If you're looking for a quick hearty meal while enjoying a cozy relaxed ambiance, then White Star is the place for you! This place is known for their burgers but they also have good entrees as well. I went with friends on a weeknight and were seated right away. The food came out within minutes after ordering and everyone enjoyed their Happy Hour specials. There is literally something for everyone from drinks (beer, wine, and cocktails) to food (burgers, salads, and pastas). I ordered the Wild Boar Bolognese and finished it all. It was just that good and on a cold, rainy night, it really hit the spot. The pasta dish came out steamy hot and the bolognese sauce was really tasty.

Yelp
Went to Whitestar for dinner this week with a group of friends; As a party of 6, they couldn't fit us outside so we were seated in one of the large booth tables inside, although pretty cozy for 3 men and 3 women. Everything had been off to a good start until our waitress brought out our first round of drinks. The waitress spilled the cocktail completely onto the table and all over two of the men. She seemed very flustered, barely apologized, and didn't rush back with napkins or a towel to wipe off the table. We were shocked when she actually went over to a couple other tables to service them instead. Finally one of the guys went to the bar to get napkins and cleaned up the mess she made since no one was coming to do it. It was extremely bizarre and poor service. Getting to the food - To start we shared the fried pickles, buffalo cauliflower and an order of wings. All very tasty. For mains, most people got burgers. I tried the chopped cobb salad with cheddar cheese instead of blue. They forgot to put the dressing on the side which I requested but it was fine. I really liked the salad. The burgers were all huge portions and came with a lot of fries - their fries are good. My friends felt like the martini glasses got smaller since the last time they were there precovid. They did give a pretty generous wine pour. At the end of the meal when our bill came, we were also pretty shocked that the one cocktail the waitress spilt on the two guests wasn't taken off the bill. We assumed at least one item would have been comped since she spilt the drink on them. Gratuity was already added since we were a party of 6. The other unfortunate thing that happened was a giant piece of the wood in the booth broke off and stabbed my friend in the leg when she was trying to get in & out to use the restroom. She had a pretty bad scratch and splinter. Overall, food was good; service needs some work.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I just moved to Jersey City and were looking for a late night dinner. Luckily, this spot was open. This restaurant/bar was pretty small, but had an upstairs. This spot was like a small, casual, but intimate spot where you can have a chill night with friends, a date, or a small family outing. It seemed like this place was popular for their burgers. I ordered a lemonade cocktail (2 because it was really good), my boyfriend and I ordered buffalo wings, and the hamilton burger cooked medium with a side of fries. Both choices were tasted great. The burger was juicy, the fries were crispy, and the buffalo wings were really good. I could definitely come back here because of how good the food was. The service was okay though. It was difficult at times to get the servers attention so, but it was not that big of a deal. Will definitely be returning and trying more on their menu
google avatar

Jenny M.

Yelp
If and when you are in the mood for a burger this is the place to be. Never ever disappoints. They are consistent and have a great friendly service. Plus their cocktails are just as delicious!

Yelp
Went for Good Beer Passport Dinner Food - 5/5. I know that White Star is known for their burgers but their pizza is just as good if not better! The dough is deliciously thin and the tomatoes have that little hint of sweetness to them. The cheeses are what makes the pizza so good; the mozzarella has an amazing bite that you can stretch out with your teeth and just the right amount of saltiness that you expect from good mozzarella. The goat cheese has the signature sour notes as well being creamy. A simple but great pizza! Service - 4/5. Friendly and fast. Value - 5/5. The pizza runs at $12 and is about as large as a personal pie. It is delicious and great for sharing or enjoying with others. Nice value! Parking - Street (Free)

Yelp
A friend of mine and I just came here to meet someone for a quick cocktail. It was a cute spot and dog friendly, for those dog lovers. The parking can be tough here but got lucky with a decent spot. We sat outside and luckily I had a jacket because it was cool out. We were served by this very nice lady. I ordered a sangria and pinot nior and my friend ordered a jalapeño margarita. My sangria and pinot nior were ok. My friend enjoyed his drink though. All in all we had a pretty decent experience.

Yelp
So the first time I came here was for brunch on a Sunday afternoon with a group of probably 8 and I have to say it was a little disappointing which we chalked up to the fact that this was the only place in jersey city we could walk into on a Sunday morning with 8 people and be seated immediately. The server was definitely new and had no idea what she was doing. We asked her that grumpy coffee was and she literally had to go ask for us to find out it's just regular coffee. There are like 10 things on the menu for brunch. The service was extremely slow that day and I got the fritter which I did not enjoy. A lot of other people got burgers and I think they were fairly happy. I was just unhappy that the service was slow and I had to ask for water like 3 times. I was so thirsty and she was not getting it. But then my friend and I had taken our dogs to the pier nearby and decided to try it again for a quick lunch. We sat outside obviously with the dogs. We both got salads and they were awesome! I got salmon on my salad and it was tender and perfectly seasoned. We also got iced coffees and they really hit the spot. The vibe outside was really nice and the service was good. Maybe it was just our server the first day or maybe outside is just significantly better but I've changed my mind.

Yelp
Came here Saturday night. Ordered drinks and Buffalo wings. Prices are reasonable and food and service is good. Make a reservation. There's a seating capacity and they reach it fast.

Yelp
Try it! This place is pretty good, specially for appetizers and ambiance. We stopped by here recently for dinner and I was instantly drawn in by how cute it was. We started off with some fried pickles, mussels, and truffle fries. All delicious! Then, we got burgers. I went for the van vorst burger. Not the best option I must admit, but pretty good still.

Courtney S.

Yelp
For me, this was a very warming place to visit. I almost passed it up as it is listed in Apple Maps as a breakfast restaurant and I was in the area around dinner time. I looked up the hours and decided to stop in before fully deciding on my dinner spot. The bartender was inviting but laid back and easy to talk to. I enjoyed some appetizers and couldn't fault any drink or food I was served. The crispy potatoes were delicious & only wanted more. The local regulars were friendly and the manager actually sat near me the bar to do some work at the bar and made an effort to converse with me as I dined, and was very pleasant to chat with. I am happy to have found a place in the area that I love that I can go back to for a warm welcome & meal whenever I need it.

Yelp
Good spot with great ambiance. Nice local burger choices. We got the Journal Square and Hamilton Park burgers medium. Got red and rose glasses. They were just ok. Bit salty, good bread and awesome fries. Service was ok. Simple spot for a quick dinner and drink. Nothing too memorable but it gets a recommendation.

Yelp
Came here with some coworkers after work. The drinks were great and the food was well cooked. Cute spot with street parking. The staff was friendly and attentive. I will definitely be returning.

Yelp
I have to say that this my FAVOURITE BRUNCH SPOT in Jersey city. I wouldn't restrict my love to just the Brunch menu, but I truly love their All day menu as well. I most recently had their Salmon (which I have had several times before) and the "medium rare" was cooked to perfection, super juicy and delicious. The vibe here is super chill, I always enjoy the service - they don't hover, nor do they forget you - which is indeed a difficult balance to find! I like their cocktails too, although I feel they could use more work (or more prosecco in the mimosa).

Michael M.

Yelp
Fantastic menu with the best bar food you can imagine (you have to try the Mike's hot honey pepperoni flatbread). Food is delicious, service is welcoming, food comes out super quick. This will be one of my go-tos!

Yelp
Good neighborhood spot for brunch and burgers. I'd recommend a reservation as it does get busy.

I've heard great things about White Star from friends, and finally got around to trying it a few days ago. It definitely did not disappoint! We arrived around 9pm on a Thursday evening and were seated immediately. We took the second to last open table, so the restaurant was pretty packed for the time of evening. I can imagine this place probably has a long wait during prime dinner hours and on weekends. The food here is outstanding. I ordered the Journal Square burger and it was juicy, fresh and flavorful. I'm a huge fan of over-easy eggs on burgers, so the Journal Square burger was right up my alley. My boyfriend ordered the Exchange Place burger and enjoyed it as well. I did knock off a star for portion size. We often eat at Buddy Who's and I've found that their burgers are much larger and they serve more French fries with the burger. However, I like the ambiance at White Star better and feel that they have more unique burger offerings, so I'll definitely be back here!
