13 Places to Wade Into the Wondrous History of Sewers

"In 2017, crews working for Thames Water—a utility company that tends to the warren of sewer pipes snaking beneath London’s streets—came across something gnarly. Under the city’s Whitechapel neighborhood, a 130-ton, yellow-white mass of oils, grease, and trash, including gloopy wet wipes, was plugging up the pipes. The stinky beast, which stretched more than 820 feet, was among the largest fatbergs ever discovered under the city, and certainly the most famous: The putrid mass spawned story after story about wanton wastefulness and the environmental toll of single-use products. It took sewer crews more than three months to break up the fatberg and haul it to the surface. Bits of this fatberg or its rank brethren went off to labs for analysis, were dissected in front of television cameras, and were dried out and exhibited at the Museum of London. Meanwhile, Thames Water and other utility companies around the world have doubled down on education campaigns to discourage residents from flushing anything beyond pee, poop, puke, and toilet paper. And in Whitechapel, Thames Water installed a manhole cover to commemorate the war being waged against the stuff sticking to the old pipes, and celebrate the unsung teams who slog through the stuff that shouldn’t be down there in the first place. Go pay it a visit, and pledge to never pour excess cooking oil down the drain again." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Very well planned station. There are plenty of lifts and escalator connecting to the Elizabeth line which makes going to Heathrow from here a fairly simple process.

Very disappointed.... It's a modern underground station.. The Elizabeth line was just opened in 2022 but still lack of basic facilities such as restrooms for passengers.

The station is a good destination in itself but also a hub to different locations thanks to the links between tube, overground and Elizabeth Line. Lifts make for easy access. Signage could be better in places.

Whitechapel is a fascinating part of London that beautifully blends its rich history with a vibrant, modern energy. The neighborhood is steeped in history, with iconic landmarks like the Whitechapel Gallery offering a glimpse into its artistic heritage. The area is also famous for its ties to Jack the Ripper, which adds a layer of intrigue for history buffs. The cultural diversity of Whitechapel is one of its biggest strengths. Walking through the streets, you'll find a wide variety of shops, markets, and restaurants representing different cultures, particularly with an array of South Asian cuisine that’s among the best in the city. The bustling Whitechapel Market is a great place to explore local produce, street food, and unique finds. In recent years, Whitechapel has seen a surge in development, bringing with it trendy cafes, creative spaces, and an exciting arts scene that complements its historic charm. The area has a lively, youthful vibe, making it a hotspot for students, professionals, and creatives alike. With excellent transport links, including the Overground and the new Elizabeth Line, Whitechapel is incredibly well-connected, making it easy to explore the rest of London. The mix of history, culture, and modernity makes Whitechapel a unique and dynamic place to visit or live. Highly recommend for anyone looking to experience a different side of London!
