Only my second visit ever despite all my 15 years working in Yolo County. Whitey's is almost at its 60-year mark!
Had an errand at the Merkeley Post Office nearby and stopped into Whitey's for a late lunch, not too busy at all around 1:30 PM on a Tuesday. Maybe 4 people were ahead of me waiting and several arrived after me, but it went by quickly. They also do online ordering ahead and curbside service, last orders 30 minutes before closing. Open 10:45 AM to 6:30 PM Tuesday to Friday.
I went with a Whitey's Special (1/4lb burger with cheese, bacon), curly fries, and a butterscotch shake. My previous visit last summer was for the Whitey's Special, deep-fried mushrooms, and the peach shake. The burger was $5.50, and the side of seasoned curly fries was $3.75. Shakes are $4.50 for a regular size or $5.50 for a large. The regular is actually pretty short, definitely go for the Large! They're so delicious.
They have several patio tables/benches, you can eat in your car, or take your food to go.
Their famous peach shake is seasonal in the summertime and is usually available starting around the 4th of July. Other seasonal shake flavors as you can imagine include pumpkin, eggnog, or peppermint.
There are so many shake flavors that I want to try next -- peanut butter, banana, cherry, rootbeer, coffee -- but the butterscotch really hit the spot, especially with the warmer weather outside.
Other than burgers, they also have tacos, burritos (even chimichangas), tostadas, sandwiches, hot dogs/corn dogs, and chicken (no more fish items). Other than fries (french, curly, chili, chili cheese) they also do onion rings, breaded mushrooms, breaded zucchini, and cream cheese jalapeno poppers!
The shakes have hooked me so far, but can't go wrong with a good old soft-serve cone either. The sundaes also sound really good, give me hot fudge and bananas any day.
