I’ve always had great experiences shopping at this Whole Foods, so today felt a little out of the ordinary. When I went to check out, the cashier, Marshel, seemed a bit disengaged and not very enthusiastic. She asked what fruit I had, and I let her know it was starfruit, mentioning that they’re quite fragile on the edges. Unfortunately, they were still handled a bit roughly and ended up being dropped back into the box.
This felt especially disappointing because starfruit is very meaningful to me and my family—it’s my husband’s favorite fruit, and such a rare treat for us to find one that’s actually sweet. It’s taken us nearly a decade to come across starfruit like this, so I was hoping it would be handled with extra care.
I reminded her that I preferred to keep them carefully in the box, but she just gave a quick acknowledgment without much care. I typically prefer to give my feedback directly in the store. However, at the end of our checkout, the heavy handling of the produce and groceries was enough to wake up my baby in the stroller, so I wasn’t able to share my concerns to management in the moment.
I’m not sure if Marshel is new—she only had a sticker for a name tag—and I know starting a new job can be overwhelming. Hopefully with more time and support, she’ll feel more comfortable and engaged, since most of the staff here have always provided wonderful service.
Whole Foods has consistently been my favorite place to shop, and I trust that this was just an off day
