This is a review specific to the 2nd Floor Deli Counter, and not to the overall experience at Whole Foods. My wife was given a recipe for a salad that includes burrata and prosciutto. My kitchen and food shopping skills are limited, but I do help out with simple dishes. So the first time when I ordered a half pound of prosciutto, the fellow preparing my order took the prosciutto out of the case and proceeded to slice it and pile the slices on the waxed paper, weighed it and folded the pile and wrapped and labeled it. It was my intention to slice off the margin of fat anyway so I didn't give it a second thought. But as I was preparing the salad my wife said she wanted hers with the fat. I didn't realize the margin of fat had remnants of the casing (plastic) until my wife spit them out.
The second time, I was served by a young woman (I later found out her name, Delilah) and rather than complain about the casing from last time, I wanted to see how she worked. As soon as she put the meat on the back counter, she proceeded to slice off by hand the margins, excess fat and presumably remnants of casing (hooray!) before using threShe then started slicing and placed one layer of meat on wax paper and used a sheet of wax paper to separate each subsequent layer, each slice thus separated from the other (hooray, again!). As she handed over the package she thanked me for my patience. Actually, I was glad to wait for such care and attention to my order. Further, when I opened the package to start the salad, I discovered that she sliced the meat paper thin, so delicate. More joy!
So, on to another round of salad making and today, Delilah was again on duty at the deli. I told he she did an excellent job last time, and of course she exhibited the same care and professionalism as last time.
So, if you are buying prosciutto at Whole Foods on Arroyo Parkway, hopefully you will be lucky and be served by Delilah. She truly deserves the 5-star rating; the prosciutto and burrata (pictured) are quite good, too. Why go anywhere else?
