Eat more Whole Foods!
But at Whole Paycheck?
Well, I didn't really have much of a choice, unfortunately. After spending over an hour at the San Antonio airport trying to get my rental car, I was low on gas. No, not the rental car lol, but rather, my energy level. I had barely eaten that day, and it was mid-afternoon. I was hoping to stop by Corner Bakery Cafe in the plaza, but as luck would have it, it was actually closed due to a power outage! Seriously?!
Corner Bakery Cafe is on the southern end of the Alamo Quarry Market on Basse Road just east off the 281. I was walking up the sidewalk hoping to find some food. Any food really. Anything for this hungry Yelper who had just spent the whole day flying in from out of state and struggling to get out of the airport while trying to figure out where to go from there.
When I arrived at Whole Foods, I immediately recognized the interior, having been to two in the LBC and even one in Surf City. If you're not sure what cities they are, just know they're both in SoCal. The Hot Foods bar was in front of the left entrance, and it had a variety of selections that should cater to most customers. However, don't expect the bar to serve awesomely delicious food; otherwise, you can expect to be disappointed.
I took a takeout box from one end of the buffet bar and filled it with a little bit of everything I liked. Steamed vegetables, rice, mac & cheese, and even some wings! Unfortunately, none of them WOWed me by any means; they all tasted just ordinary, but they did do the trick and kept me away from the land of hangriness.
There is a small area for dining there if you choose to enjoy your meals there, which I did. At the corner was a counter for plastic utensils, which come in handy because who wants to eat their meals with their dirty paws?!
On another visit, I needed to buy fruit. I was planning to stop by H-E-B on the way back to my hotel, but the H-E-B I was trying to visit had their parking lot full; I didn't know there was an H-E-B near this Whole Foods at the time, but I stuck it with Whole Foods since I wanted to experience it as a regular shopper rather than a dining customer.
From what I could see, the produce looked fresh for the most part, but some pieces did have their fair share of blemishes, just like at any other grocery store you go to. And did I mention how the prices are so high here that my Yelp friends have called Whole Foods Whole Paycheck??
Overall, not bad. It served its purpose, but after two visits, I stopped going to this Whole Foods and started to patronize H-E-B.
