The old guy with a foreign accent working in the salami section 1) turned his back to me and walked away as soon as he was done with a different customer when I was standing right in front of the counter. I assumed (incorrectly) that he was putting something away or needed a second to gather his bearings so I stood there patiently. I leaned over to look at the salami (trying to decide between the two) when 2) that same guy SPRAYED two spritz of unknown liquid POINTED AT MY FACE, within the display case. I was stunned and confused when another customer walked up to the counter and asked that worker if I'm in line. The old guy says "I DON'T KNOW!" as if he had approached me and asked me, yet I ignored him or something. It finally occurred to me that him SPRAYING UNKNOWN LIQUID AT MY FACE was somehow this psycho's way of getting my attention. I told him I'm trying to decide between the two salami's, he got me the one I decided on, 3) plopped it on the counter without saying anything or looking at me. At that point I should've just walked away, but in my state of confusion over what just happened I purchased the salami. After I had more time to reflect on how bizarre the whole encounter was, I didn't feel safe eating it and had to throw it away. I initially left a 1 Star review just stating how rude the worker was, but Whole Foods corporate reached out to me asking what happened. I wrote back explaining all this, and they wrote back saying they take these matters "seriously". About two weeks went by and I haven't heard back so I wrote to them only to find out corporate didn't relay the incident to Kahala...so much for taking these matters "seriously"...Finally, I get this email from Robert K at Whole Foods Kahala (this was copied and pasted, word for word):
"First Off I would like to apologize on the behave of our online customer care service, they failed to escalate your feedback to us at the store until you reached out again. I will also extend that apology from me and the store leadership group, to how you were poorly treated at our charcuterie counter, you should have experienced a warm welcome per the expectation we set on to our team members. On the subject of the concern of the chemical in question, we use a food grade sanitizer that is meant for food contact surfaces, that chemical is also used on the slicer blades when we switch from roast beef to poultry or salamis. I assure you it does not harm the product. However you did observe the Team Member not following our best practices when cleaning and sanitizing the case. For all of events that occurred, that team member will be held to our progressive disciplinary action prosses and also retrained on the expectations of our customer service commitments and our standard operating procedures."
Now, Robert saying "you did observe the Team Member not following our best practices when cleaning and sanitizing the case" implies that the action in question is about that worker not CLEANING properly. I said, at least twice, that that guy completely ignored me and then proceeded to SPRAY what Robert claims to be food grade liquid AT MY FACE, within the display case. Robert casually omitted that most important part, I can only assume on purpose, because there really is no explanation good enough for the worker to ignore me waiting patiently in front of him, then spray cleaning solution (food grade or not) AT MY FACE. He was absolutely NOT CLEANING (he didn't wipe down what he sprayed, further proving he wasn't CLEANING), it was intentional, malicious, sick behavior for absolutely no reason. I wrote back to Robert but never got an explanation for the psycho worker's behavior, and I highly doubt he's being held to their "progressive disciplinary action process"
