Health Cafe Wholism Opens Friday on SE Hawthorne | Eater Portland
"Coming to SE Hawthorne on Friday, October 26, this new vegetarian, gluten-free cafe promises a grain-free, refined-sugar-free, organic menu that would delight your white yoga teacher — think blue algae smoothies, raw kelp noodle bowls, and avocado toast. Breakfast features smoothie bowls made with kale, dragonfruit and other zeitgeist-y ingredients, house-made coconut yogurt served in an actual coconut, and a flourless waffle with grilled banana, raw honey, and a refined-sugar-free chocolate ganache, plus sweeter options like banana bread French toast with vegan lemon ricotta and apple cinnamon porridge with almond butter. Lunch leans heavy on vegetables, swapping noodles for zucchini in a microgreen-laden pad thai, offering curried chickpeas with cauliflower rice in a tabouli-falafel salad, and kelp noodles topped with house-made kimchi, gochujang, and an abundance of raw vegetables; a coconut turmeric curry is available for breakfast or lunch, with the lunch version including kale, sweet potatoes, and lentils. There’s an espresso bar for mornings and a selection of coffee-free “lattes” made with turmeric, hibiscus, and butterfly pea, and the cafe will double as a community center for vegans and health nerds, eventually hosting events and classes. The restaurant originally intended to open at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, but a Facebook event indicates the opening has been delayed until October 26; check the restaurant’s Instagram for colorful pictures of future plates." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden
