Google
Wholly Cow how I freaking love this place! 😍 I'm gluten free and not only did they have a gluten free bun but also a gluten free fryer!! Their burger was incredible. So good I forgot to take photos until halfway through the meal. I got the mix of sweet potato and regular fries and they were bomb. The ingredients were so fresh. And the folks that work there were so kind and warm. I'm already dreaming about when I can come back!

Google
Feels like you are 2 hours out of town. All local all chill atmosphere. Burger and fries just ok. Not something I will drive across town for again. Of course I prefer a juicy fatty burger but even so, good but not great.

Dr. John Fisher

Google
Absolutely amazing food. I order the fit cross. Grass fed belted Galloway beef on a portobello mushroom instead of a bun. Absolutely delicious I ordered a second one. I will eat here every time I come to Austin.

Google
Such an iconic place to fall back and escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Come in today and have a savory 100 percent, grass fed, and finished pure single with provolone cheese!! Don’t forget to stop and make tornado siren noises to whoever is taking your order for a complimentary side of angelic fries.

Brian Fischer

Google
I've ordered takeout twice from here, and both times I was missing multiple different parts of my order. I like that the burgers are grass-fed, but they don't have a ton of flavor and both times my meals were pretty greasy. I love a good burger and maybe eating in the restaurant would improve my experience, but not sure if I will end up coming back for a third time given my previous experience.

Google
One of the friendliest service I’ve experienced in a loooong time. Burgers were medium rare and juicy and the cheese was flavorful. Justin was so welcoming. Have to come back for the cheddar sausage.

I walked into Wholly Cow with my friend a few weeks ago not knowing they were closed. We were greeted with a smile and Jose told us they were closed. After seeing the look of disappointment on our faces since we drove a decent way to get there, he fired the grills back up and told his employees to turn everything else back on. He took our order and delivered exceptional customer service and even better food. I would definitely come back again and was very impressed with the quality of their food. Thank you for the great experience Jose!

Google
This is the $5 'basket of tots'. Curious to see what the small order of tots looks like.... there was zero seasoning on them, and they were cold when they got to us despite having priority delivery. Gave an extra star because the cheesesteak was still hot, tasted decent, and was filling. Ordered thru bogo Uber eats.

Yelp
Best little secret cafe in South Austin. We love the grass fed hamburgers, hand breaded onion rings, and fresh cut fries. The cheesesteak sandwich is also not to be missed. They recently added homemade desserts, cheesecake, brownies, huge cookies and gluten free and vegan desserts. Love to bring the family here for a chill lunch or dinner. **Casual atmosphere with great food!

Tommy L.

Yelp
I really want to like this place since they have grass fed beef and gluten free buns, but every time I go, the food is just boring. I'd love for them to work on their approach to seasoning the meat better. And perhaps change the grease more often because I've yet to get properly cooked French fries here. It would make a world of difference. Be aware though -- their prices are not low, and for the premium they charge, they need to step it up. Sorry WC but maybe you'll get it right one day.

Yelp
Okay, so I saw this place on Yelp and tried it out. When you first drive up, you think what a run-down little spot. You walk in, and it looks like a little market. With chips drinks and turn to your right and this small flat top with 3 guys cooking and making food. There were 4 of us that were here, and it wasn't very cheap for a full meal. Burger fies and drinks; you are spending $18-$20 Bucks. But oh man, is it worth it? I think yes! The flavors of the burgers were magnificent. The portion sizes were huge. I went with work friends and we are not small guys. We walk out... Better yet rolled out because of how full we were. The place is super casual and almost looks like a gas station. It has lots of different choices of burgers, cheese fries, and yummy deliciousness. Must put on your to try list!

Christopher T.

Yelp
Their fries are great. I've been coming here for years for their French Fries. I recently noticed that they have a vegan section on their menu so I decided to give it a shot. The flavor on the Vegan Cheesesteak is pretty decent and the outer charred portions of the tempeh are quite nice but the texture on the inner parts was not very good at all. Revolution Vegan Kitchen has a much better Vegan Cheesesteak. I commend Wholly Cow for having the options available and I will definitely be back for the French Fries but next time, I'll probably skip the Vegan Cheesesteak.

Yelp
Hole in wall store - burger place. Burger, onion rings and fries were soooooo good !!! Bought several sauces and jelly while there ! Staff super welcoming !! Would absolutely go again!

Greg N.

Yelp
DANK ! Amazing burgers, philly cheese steak and tater tots- you would never peg this as a go to spot from the outside looking in but once you commit to taking a shot it is so worth it. Quick service and make it all as you wish in regards to altering any dish.

Dina M.

Yelp
Wholly Cow? Wholly CRAP! My husband and I are both shocked by the positive reviews for this place. We ordered burgers, fries and onion rings. They were all horrible. The burger was large but flavorless and dense. The fries and onion rings were both the worst I've ever tasted. Ever. Even fresh out of the fryer the fries were brown floppy dense rubber. The rings were also soggy and rubbery and the breading was a weird peppery soft bread! No crispness at all. All this soggy slop for extremely high prices.

T. D.

Yelp
Delicious meat AND vegan options with a cozy convenience store-esque location and a friendly owner. The vegan cheesesteak was fire and I honestly didn't miss the meat. Sure the tempeh has a completely different taste and texture than real steak, but it was delicious in and of itself. I can't wait to come back for more meat options and to try the desserts.

Marissa L.

Yelp
Love love the burgers and the fries here. Consistently delicious food. The grass fed burgers are incredible and the staff is incredibly kind. Really fast service, great for when you are in a rush. Definitely coming back!

Marissa G.

Yelp
4.5 I went to ACL 2023 weekend 1 and decided to try Wholly Cow Burgers. I saw that they had an Organic Crispy Chicken sandwich so I opted for that instead of a burger. I was pleasantly surprised. The chicken breast was really good. It was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. It was large enough for a meal for me but they also have fries that you can add to your order. The service was good. They had four lines with several people taking orders. This allowed the lines to move quickly. Due to the fact that it was at a festival the Ambiance was awesome. Based on the tasty food I had here I am planning to try the food at the South Lamar Restaurant location in the future.

Hannah K.

Yelp
Props to Wholly Cow for not only offering a vegan cheesesteak, but for making it from scratch with tempeh. Tempeh is SUCH an underappreciated protein, I will always go out of my way to support anyone making or cooking it. This is one of the best introductions to the fermented bean cake for anyone still hesitant; tender and lightly crisped around the edges, smothered in caramelized onions and sauteed peppers, and swaddled in a soft sub roll, I can't imagine anyone being disappointed with that. The cheese was minimal if even present, but I didn't miss it. Always go for this over the burger, which I found a bit more on the salty and bland side, if you have the choice.

Travis C.

Yelp
This is definitely the best place I've eaten at so far in Austin. The cheesesteak and chicken sandwich were a symphony of flavors, leaving my taste buds dancing with joy. The melt-in-your-mouth goodness and perfect blend of ingredients elevated these sandwiches to another level. Adding to the meal was a nice side of tater tots. Crispy perfection on the outside, fluffy on the inside - these tots were the ideal sidekick to an already stellar meal. The friendly and responsive staff added a warm touch to the meal. Their attention to detail was evident, and a delightful follow-up after the meal showcased their commitment to customer satisfaction. This is a definite 5-star delight that has set a new standard for my sandwich cravings! Can definitely recommend, will certainly be back.

Yelp
TLDR: Wholly Cow... popular how?! It's a no for me dawg. Visit: Weekend (dinner) Order: Fit Cross- 7.4/10 The fit cross is a single patty burger with bacon and portabella mushrooms as the bun (standard fixin's + mustard only). All in all, decent. The mushrooms were actually quite tasty... but the burger itself was cooked well done and quite chewy. In addition, the beef was completely lacking seasoning. "Heavenly"* Dbl with Cheese added bacon/fried egg- 4.3/10 This was a absolute miss for me. Under seasoned/well done burgers that looked like poorly homemade hockey puck cow pies. Overdone fried egg ($2). One piece of bacon ($1). For a nearly $14 burger... disgraceful. The gist of issues: -No greeting or speech upon ordering. Expressionless. Silent. Stare. -Order wrong (ordered two sides of bacon and got one) -Cold to my friend and myself, chatty AF with our girlfriends though lmao -Poor food quality. A less than mediocre burger with the additional slap in the face to pay for an over fried egg and one piece of bacon for $3. -Homemade cookies sitting out in the middle of the store next to a trash can. Ugh... I want to go on but this review is too long as it is. Let's just say there's no way I'll ever be back.

Kaitlin H.

Yelp
This place rocks. I haven't written a review in years and used to be a Yelp elite. The recent poor reviews don't reflect my experience. Their cheesesteaks rock and what a bang for your buck for the onion rings. My only regret is living in Austin for 12 years and just now finding this place!

John T.

Yelp
Food tasted very good. Sadly, grubhub delivered to the wrong address as the driver failed to look at the address, never notified me it was delivered so it sat until a leasing agent noticed the order & carried it across the street to my building. Our sandwich was cold, the bag & wrapper were soggy, & had to be peeled away piece by piece. This is a habit with delivery.!! I paid 18.46 in tip & delivery fees for 2 sandwiches that were not delivered to me.. no more tips or fees for grub hub, service cancelled..!!

Natalya C.

Yelp
Delicious keto burger and the service was amazing! Everyone working here was really friendly. I definitely will be back!

Bowen R.

Yelp
Every time I want a burger and tater tots this is my place. Grass fed 10/10 burgers, you can practically hear the cows mooing from the shop. Made my whole family com here for my birthday dinner - and to my delight we got a birthday french fry on the HOUSE. The sweetest workers in all the world and just really feels like a mom and pop shop where you know the food is G double O D, good. YUM! Best burger options for non burger eaters too - but for sure get the burger. It is in a convenient shop so any drink you could dream up is at your finger tips. They have condiments at the table, and if they don't have what you want - ask the man behind the counter. He will provide. If I lived closer I would go once a week.

Dana G.

Yelp
I saw another person's review of the vegan cheesesteak from about a month ago and wanted to try it for myself. I ordered it for delivery and normally have no problems with things arriving a little differently than what is pictured, but to pass off this sloppy wet mess, I can't help but be disappointed. Normally a complaint would be that things are too dry, but this was the exact opposite. Would not order again.

Amadio M.

Yelp
I visited just one time and saw ROACHES!! I saw workers touch the food with their bare hands while making the food, I even saw one of the workers smoking IN THE WALK IN!!! NEVER GO HERE.

Mila S.

Yelp
I cannot believe all the good reviews for this place. It must be a joke. I really wanted to like it, but it was probably the worst burger and fries I got so far. Thin, well-done, unseasoned and chewy beef patty on a cold bun, cooked and served by a guy in a dirty t-shirt and shorts... yeah, I'll pass next time. Broken and black old potato fries that became soggy in 2 minutes after frying - no thanks. 2 basic burgers and two orders of fries (they are pretty small) cost us over $40. There are fantastic burgers in town that you can get for half that in a pretty nice, clean restaurant. The other guy at the counter was nice. But overall this hole in the wall is just that - hole in the wall. I do not recommend this place.

Amanda P.

Yelp
Was not impressed with this place, The service was really slow even though there were about 5 people in the restaurant. The service was also not particularly great. The bathroom was dirty and there were no papers towels to dry your hands with. The food was decent but nothing to write home about.

Andy G.

Yelp
Wholly cow is right!! I had a great tasting burger with all the fixings...very juicy down to the last bite. My wife had the Philly cheesesteak...and that too was on point! To round it out, we had those cheese tater tots with some bomb homemade chili...won't disappoint!!

Schuyler S.

Yelp
This place was touted online as a great Whole30 option. Upon getting here to order the staff seemed confused about what we were asking for as if nobody has every asked about it. They were super welcoming to my buddy's girlfriend and mine but just gave us guys blank stares when ordering. Really odd service. The place is basically an old convenient store. And I do mean OLD. The seats are really creaky and feel like they might break. Food was nothing special. I was hoping its be a gem, hole in the wall type place but was sadly mistaken!

Daniel S.

Yelp
Wholly Cow Burgers have the best burgers in town. I drive 16 miles outta my way for the burgers. Also the fact that they will be at ACL shows they top the list of best burgers in Austin. Also don't let the name fool you, they have great cheesesteaks and frito pies. Along with other savory menu items. To not try this great venue and food truck would be a sin. I'm from Austin born and raised, I have tried every burger joint since 1983. This is by far the best burger place that has a diverse menu where everything is incredibly tasty. You won't ever go wrong with Wholly Cow Burgers. Did I mention there beef is grass fed. Also fresh and made to order. Daniel S.

Gina L.

Yelp
Burgers, tots, and onion rings were great! The beef is locally sourced and fresh. The beef was really tender but I would've liked a little more salt or seasoning on my patty. It's located inside a really old convenient store and the inside looks like a hodge podge of random gas station finds and they decided to add a restaurant inside. The inside was poorly ventilated. It was only 70 some odd degrees outside and I felt like we were burning up inside. Hopefully this isn't the case with the hot summers ahead of us! Overall a good experience, we'd come back.

Simon P.

Yelp
I would like to say that they have the best hole in the wall burgers in Austin but they simply just have the BEST burgers period. My wife will not eat burgers from any other place than here. We live on the north side of Austin and we would drive all the way here just for the burgers. They have fresh ingredients, grass feed beef and lots of tasty options in their menu. Gluten-free and vegan options. In addition the customer service is great, they go out of their way to make sure your food is on point. Definitely my favorite burger place in Austin and I highly recommended.

Chelsea H.

Yelp
I've never had a worse experience from a burger restaurant in my life. One of the staff was making the most obnoxious mouth trumpet and then death metal sounds WHILE making our food. Obviously he wasn't paying attention to cooking since our burgers came out completely raw and cold inside. They were completely inedible and went straight in the garbage for fear of food poisoning. Wasted 32 dollars plus tip on 2 tiny RAW hamburgers. First time trying the place and I'll never be back.

Mark A.

Yelp
On the long-running list of places to try in Austin, had to stop by since it was right on the way coming from the greenbelt after a morning at Gus Fruh. They have a simple menu but what they have they do well. It's 1/2 | 1/2 store / restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. It's not a huge indoor store, and this was the first time I'd been there but I wonder if they just set it up so they could stay in business during the pandemic. Anyhow, I got the double with cheese and onion rings on the side. Amazingg burger. The patties were huge and super flavorful; all the toppings, and it added to the flavor instead of taking over. Let the meat speak for itself. Simple, and great in its delivery. The onion rings were equally as good, not a lot of breading, and well seasoned.

Pete S.

Yelp
Great burgers, chicken sandwiches, fries, onion rings and queso tater tots (yes, we had ALL of those.). Don't miss this!

Chloe S.

Yelp
Why have a customization option if you're not going to follow it? My fiancé got a burger and didn't want any of the sauces and they proceed to put Mayo, mustard, and ketchup on it lol. Just not worth it to pay $13 for a messed up mediocre burger. Will not be returning sadly.

Alex M.

Yelp
I just moved to Austin in February. About a month ago I decided to check this place out. They had good reviews and I'm a burger fan. Happy to say I wasn't disappointed! It's gotta be one of the best burgers I've ever had. In a month I've been 3 times. Staff is friendly, small family owned business and great food. I love this place. Can't wait to take friends and family when they visit.

Liam Y.

Yelp
Best burgers in town. Best Philly in town. Best chili fries in town. Best organic food in town. Eat here.

Paul C.

Yelp
The heavenly double is without any doubt my favorite burger in Austin. Big, juicy, cooked perfectly. The restaurant - which is really a convenience store with a burger stand inside, is nothing much to see, but the best places are often like that, right? Get it to go if you want, but I recommend eating it fresh with fries and a mexi coke. Fast service. You might wait 10 min if they have a bunch of pick up orders already, but it's worth it.

Carly V.

Yelp
I wanted to grab a burger after a workout and decided to give Wholly Cow a try. I used their online portal to preorder the burger before my gym class. I arrived a little early for pickup. The cashier was really friendly and let me know that the burger would just be a few minutes. This place is a convenience store and a burger restaurant - there are tables inside to eat your food there (in the A/C - worth noting for the summer time). A few minutes after I got there, my Fit Cross burger and sweet potato fires were ready. This burger was delicious! Juicy, messy, cheesy - it was amazing. And the sweet potato fries were very good, as well. This is a good place to keep in mind in the new year, as we try to eat healthier and want to consume less bread. The Fit Cross burger is a great low carb option.

Rocio M.

Yelp
DELICIOUS FOOD!! I had gotten one of their burger's with a gluten free bun and it was delicious! Haven't had a good juicy burger like this in a while definitely a must to come here!! I would show a pic but it got devoured

Josh R.

Yelp
Burger was a lot dry. Grass fed is typically leaner, probably was just left on grill too long. We were a group of 5, felt the burgers were consistent. Portobello caps as a bun was interesting for the keto friendly.

Ashlee P.

Yelp
This place was mega yummy! I don't eat burgers often, so when I do, I want to go all out. Great meat, quality bun, and delicious fries make this a stupendous burger spot. My blue fire s and I both got cheese burgers with all the fixings, and we were both super satisfied with our burgers. He got the onion rings and I got the fries. We both agreed the rings were fine, but the fries were superior. The vibe of this little restaurant/market is chill and friendly. Great service and a nice outdoor sitting area where we could hang out with our pup made this out new favorite burger place.

Michaela P.

Yelp
Wholly Hell! Driven by a thousand times but this is our first time here. Hubby wanted a burger after working big ticket items off his honey-do list. So happy we stopped in! Seems a little dicey when you first walk in, but super nice folks and great food! Cheesesteak is not a Philly but is still tasty. The burger was perfectly cooked and served exactly as ordered. Quality beef really does make a difference. Like the Hawaiian rolls. Good fries. All appropriately priced. They've got chicken and vegan options as well and a small market. We may become regulars...

Gracie P.

Yelp
Great burger and onion rings! make sure you add a slice of cheese cake! I had the patty melt, delish. Very meaty burger!

Miles P.

Yelp
They have chili on the menu but it's a sad practical joke. Literally a pile of dry ground beef, lightly seasoned. Selling something called "Texas style" chili should probably involve braised beef and, you know... chilies. Misleading and disgusting.

Barbara D.

Yelp
Food was amazing! It would be nice if y'all offered a small 1/2 & 1/2 fries/onion rings order. It's a lot. Service was friendly & professional. It was warm inside so took it to go... will definitely be back again! Lots of other things to try on menu!

Shradha A.

Yelp
For a town known for its burgers, this option was not all that great despite being featured in some blogs and books. The best part of the meal was actually their fries. The burger was good - not great. It also was not filling enough to be a meal on its own.

Daniel B.

Yelp
Phenomenal burgers and always great customer service. I eat a ton of beef and this is a gem in Austin!

Corrie S.

Yelp
Hole-in-the-wall goodness! You need to go here! This spot is inside a little maket/gas station. It's surprising and tucked away! My husband and I were in the mood for a good burger and we're NOT disappointed. This burger was DELICIOUS and satisfying. On another note, the onion rings were amazing too. I got an order randomly and it was exactly what I was hoping...thick onions with chunky, peppery batter. Just plain yummy! Was great supporting a "mom and pop" type of business in Austin and the food was great! Highly recommend!

jaybird junior j.

Yelp
Food is body friendly! Ambiance is very Austin. Service is order at counter and delivered to you. Casual Cafe with a wonderful vibe. If you want good food it's here. I usually don't go at noon rush, always enjoy the vibe. Team is friendly and on task.

Jolie L.

Yelp
Went in about a week and a half ago. I was served the most rotten smelling and tasting food I've ever had. Really disappointing and nauseating. I had to push my uneaten sandwich to the other side of the table until my boyfriend finished his "mediocre at best" cheeseburger because it absolutely reeked. I did order vegetarian. Avoid the tempeh at all costs. I'm serious when I say I have never been served a more foul and pungent meal in my life. It smelled like opening a full dumpster on a 100 degree day. It tasted just as bad. I can't believe I took a bite and I'm shocked I didn't get sick from it. To plant based eaters (and anyone who doesn't want their food to look and smell like soggy grey barnacles) word of warning if you're looking to accompany a meat eater here. I'd heard from others they hate vegetarians, should've listened! Onion rings were okay. Staff was very friendly. Didn't complain, left and sadly will never return.

Pete X.

Yelp
I ordered the Wholly Cheesesteak Batman, a slice of cheesecake, and fries. The Wholly Cheesesteak Batman is absolutely disgusting. I ordered the cheesesteak with Texas toast as bread. For starters, the toast was not toasted or grilled, so the bread was weak (and flavorless) and tore under the weight of the food. The cheesesteak literally tasted like a box of Hamburger Helper!!! Why would I want to spend money on something that taste like boxed food? The fries were forgettable and the cheesecake was the only bright spot. Needless to say, I won't be ordering from Wholly Cow again because holy cow their food is garbage! I HATE BAD FOOD!

Martin D.

Yelp
Bun was good, fries were hot but old, Swiss cheese was very good quality. Might I add, cashier was super nice. Meat wasn't seasoned at all. I give it 2.5 stars personally

Molly M.

Yelp
A little hole in the wall place. If you're going, be prepared to sit next to shelves of gas station stocked items. I chose to go here for the AIP friendly burger and fries. The crew was very kind. We got there right at 11am and took our order right away. It came out in no time and the cook brought it right to us. The fit cross burger without tomato and mustard on mine was really, really good but beware the mushroom is super juicy and it was dripping down my arm. Had to wipe my hands after every bite. The sweet potato fries basket was delicious. Plenty for two people to share in my opinion. Cooked crispy and had the perfect amount of salt on them as well. Really enjoyed this food and would definitely go back!

Mikey E.

Yelp
The guy made my cheesesteak made with ground beef yesterday. It's advertised as thin sirloin slices. They could have charged less if they did not have fresh sirloin. Instead, they choose to try to play their customers. I have seen another review describing the cheesesteak meat as hamburger. It kind of makes me sick that people operate this way instead of being upfront. Penny wise and pound foolish.
