The Best Bagels in Boston | Eater Boston

"Wicked Bagel offers more than a dozen varieties, along with assorted cream cheese spreads and sandwiches stuffed with eggs, bacon, ham, cheese, salmon, and chicken salad. This bakery features an open kitchen, for those hoping for an inside look at bagel making. It has opened a second location in Woburn, a bit further north of the city." - Valerie Li Stack

OMG! SRO inside with lines to the entrance door, a busy sidewalk crowd for window order pickups. What is all the fuss, it's just bagels.. right? We'll I've got to tell ya, if you've ever had a fresh tasty bagel, prepare yourself for Wicked Bagel Bliss! Considering the foot traffic, excellent prompt, courteous service by some of Watertown's fine young folks (gen z's!) Worth the wait, yummy bagels plus fixings! Definately encore worthy!

Google
This was a wonderful bagel place right by our hotel in Woburn! So many options for sweet and savory bagels and lovely bakery treats! Breakfast of champions, and breakfast lovers dream! Best part is you could call or text ahead of time and have it ready to be picked up!

Google
We order here for ever bday breakfast and most Sundays- amazing food all around but recently when a mistake was made and part of the order was missing, I reordered it and the sent DOUBLE of what I ordered plus a half dozen bagels and beautiful pastries to make up for it. Will ALWAYS order here

Google
I found this place after visiting a nearby business. I bought half a dozen delicious bagels and a lemon dessert. They have specials near the end of the day. Staff was friendly and efficient, bakery was clean and spacious.

Google
Much better than expected based on the other reviews and photos. Great chewy bagels and fresh ingredients. Got a loaded lox bagel sandwich and another with nice thick cut, crispy bacon. I’ll be returning soon!

I have been coming here for a while, and in the past several visits the food and service reminds me of a fast food joint. When the kitchen staff doesn't know what the teens on the service desk are doing, you get a mess. It feels like the ownership changed in this place and someone who has never been in the service industry took over. Read you're negative reviews, they are here for a reason. Most people comment about the negative service and wait times they had to endure. Once that is gone, you have your food to attract people, and if that goes down the drain, well you get the point. When you get a bagel from Wicked Bagels you don't usually expect it to be Wicked. The term for an ugly bagels 🥯 just got a new meaning. That's not even in the shape of a circle. And the dough feels like it was not cooked. The whole bagel is squeezed like someone decided to step on it before putting it in a bag. Also, you can see from the photos that someone didn't do quality control on these bagels. Because I got two top halves of two different bagels. Which means, another customer got two bottom parts of two different bagels. Job well done! If you're looking for good fresh baked goods, drive down the street to MA France! Or Starbucks or Dunkin 5 min away. Especially, when their bagels are cheaper.

Yelp
I ordered lunch here via a catering service. Since I didn't step inside, I can't speak to the ambiance of the place. I can speak to the food though. I ordered a customized bagel sandwich and asked for no bagel but a wrap. They only offered a thin quinoa wrap, which broke apart very easily. However, I recognize that this is a bagel place not a standard sandwich place. Thought it was a bit messy to eat, I appreciated that my wrap was packed with ingredients and was delicious!

Yelp
The bagels are gigantic and delicious. The coffee is hot and tasty. There are many bagel options. The service is excellent. There are tables where you can sit don and eat your bagels.

Yelp
Six visits, all great. Bagels have wonderful crust, flavor , medium size which I love, pumpernickel, onion, with chive cream cheese! Reminds me of home.
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
Only ordered from here because my preferred bagel place was closed today, won't be doing that again. I ordered a couple bagels and a container of cream cheese. The garlic bagels barely have any garlic on them and they gave me the wrong cream cheese.
google avatar

Brenda E.

Yelp
Great bagels - fresh and excellent selection. No other bagel shops (that I am aware of...) in Waltham. Highly recommend.

Stephen P.

Yelp
Won't go again. Ordered 3 bagels at the counter. Got to work and found 2 bagels in the bag and one was not part of my order. Maybe take the AirPods out of your ear and listen to the customer as they are ordering.

Yelp
I liked the name wicked bagel and had to see what was so wicked about it. There are lots of bagels to choose from, and cream cheese. I got an egg and cheese sandwich and was disappointed it wasn't cooked throughly. The cheese wasn't melted. Not my favorite way to eat a breakfast sandwich. They have lots of drink options, hot to cold coffee. They do have good coffee A few times I got takeout and reheated my breakfast sandwich which is much better. Go figure. Better to bring it home . You can watch them make the bagels there . The place is clean with places to eat but it does get crowded at peak times , like mornings. Plenty of places to park. It's local so it's nice to support the business. I wouldn't say it's wicked great, but it's good.

Giovanni P.

Yelp
The staff is super nice. the place is noisy but has character. the scone was *really* old.

E P.

Yelp
I almost wrote a review last week when they forgot one of my bagel sandwiches but I didn't want to act rashly. Unfortunately, they forgot a sandwich again today. Nice young people working here and good food, but I probably won't come again. Maybe a different Wicked Bagel location would be better?
google avatar

Dil S.

Yelp
Real mediocre bagels and did not receive what I ordered. No Reuben available today and got bacon instead of turkey sausage. Sad, cold power breakfast sandwich. Unable to order them toasted through Uber eats. One and done for me.

Yelp
Dood, I do believe EVERY time I have ordered my bagel toasted it has NEVER been toasted and I've been here at least six times. I don't mean to be a curmudgeon, but this isn't rocket science -and moreover does ANYONE (some may) actually ask for their bagel UNTOASTED? I have concluded that this many times isn't just an honest mistake but rather some workers just say, "screw it" and are just too apathetic to bother toasting them or to pay attention. The workers are mostly just a bunch of high-school kids that can safely play apathy roulette. What's the worst that can happen? Maybe the customer will return later by car to demand toasting? Probably not... In the words of Sleepy Joe, "Come on... come on, man!" Otherwise, the bagel itself is good although I wouldn't say wicked good -I've had better... There seems to be no standards. Each time I order my lox everything bagel it is different -ingredients are omitted or added and ratios and thickness of ingredients are all over the map -massively thick cucumber slices and chunky onions, tomatoes and/or capers this time and not that time, etc., is no bueno. The owner should look at Wikipedia or something to see how this is traditionally made and train the staff rather than leaving it to the workers to blindly prepare them and do "whatever." This place most certainly would not fly in Queens, NYC. HELPFUL HINT: Make your own coffee as theirs is expensive and not worth the price. It's just ordinary coffee.

Mary S.

Yelp
I picked up an order today 9/01. I didn't realized until I made it to the car that the bag was covered in cream cheese, as it was all over my pants and the car seat. I went in the store to ask for it to be re-bagged. I also asked for wet paper towels with soap. That's when the manager told me they have no soap. If there's no soap, how are people washing their hands? How disgusting. Wicked bagel responded to me this morning. Owner Maria said they do have soap and that I asked for wet wipes, actually no. I asked for wet paper towels and a customer gave me their own wet wipes. Goes to show not everywhere is clean and safe.

Yelp
This place is now my favorite bagel place closest to me. The bagels are consistently good. I have been coming here with toddler over the pandemic and taking advantage of their pickup window. I can leave her in the car seat and grab our bagels. Wish more places did this!
google avatar

Amanda C.

Yelp
The bagels themselves are delicious, and I've had breakfast bagel sandwiches here on three different occasions. However, each time, the cheese on the sandwich wasn't melted, which I found odd. It was a completely cold slice of cheese on a warm bagel sandwich. Im Not sure if this was intentional or just a coincidence. Either way, it messed up the sandwich for me and I ended up removing the cheese entirely.

Fletch ..

Yelp
Been here a bunch of times and the service has always been excellent, the bagels were delicious, and prices were reasonable. Bagels were very fresh no matter what time of the day I went. Shaking my head at the 1-star reviews.

Sarah T.

Yelp
I almost didn't write a review but then took out my sandwich and saw it was made with a burnt bagel. I had ordered thru grubhub and was missing a sandwich. I called and supervisor tells me to get a refund through grubhub. Grubhub didn't make the mistake - the bag was *stapled* closed. Doesn't want to refund me so have to pick up my sandwich. I go get my sandwich which was made with a burnt bagel. Management stood by "supervising" (aka hiding behind) teenage staff instead of apologizing for mess up and dealing with me directly. Extremely frustrating experience considering I had already given a generous tip before finding my sandwich missing. There were mistakes in the past with messed up orders - one time I got a dozen bagels of what they had instead of what I'd ordered. Ends up not worth the aggravation.

Annette P.

Yelp
Service was frustrating. Ordered online and was waiting thirty five minutes after estimated ready time. Staff was pleasant and said they'd check on order multiple times but at third check, the bag was sitting on top of go shelf and bottom of bag had torn due to grease of one of the sandwiches so wonder if they had ever really checked. When got to car, realized bag was missing one of the three sandwiches so had to wait another ten minutes. Cold (salmon) sandwich was good, but two others were cold and meh so not worth the trouble overall.

Yelp
Let me set the record straight. The bagels are awesome, and the customer service is extraordinary! Yes, they get busy but people, manage your expectations. I've had nothing but friendly encounters with everybody in there who ties hard. What more can you ask for?

Susan L.

Yelp
The bagels are fresh and delicious! Also, snagged a dozen bagels for the price of a half dozen, so I'm a happy customer
google avatar

Jenna S.

Yelp
I enjoyed the chocolate chip bagel and am excited to try other flavors. I wish the bagels tasted a little more flavorful but the cream cheese are very good. I also love the seating indoors and out.

Yelp
MUSTARD ON A NOVA SANDWHICH??! While the bagels and sandwhiches are good the service couldn't be worse. I've been ordering bagel sandwhiches to go for months now and everytime, the employees have been nothing but rude and careless. I understand, with COVID, restaurants are jumping through hoops but this is ridiculous. From missing food to completely incorrect orders, I often wonder why I go back. Maybe its my fault for giving them the benefit of the doubt. Mustard nova sandwhich?!?!?! I've eaten a ton of bagels in my life and girlfriend's family is in the bagel industry and Wicked Bagel has the audacity to tell us that there is mustard on the nova sandwhich. We ordered three bagels through a delivery app, two sandwhiches came with minimal cream cheese and my girlfriend's bagel came with MUSTARD on her nova sandwhich. We completely understand mishaps and mistakes - completely fine, especially on a Sunday! We gave them a call to ask how that happened and the teenager gave nothing but sass and attitude and mentioned that the nova sandwhich on the menu includes mustard. We kept telling him that it, in fact, does not include such. This employee on the phone was rude, called us blind for not seeing the mustard in the sandwhich description and refused to transfer us to his manager/store owner. For sure the last time we ever eat here. Highly recommend going to Bagelsaurus in Cambridge.

Yelp
The bagels are great and sandwiches (when all ingredients are included within the sandwich and made as advertised) are tasty. Most of the staff, however, leaves so much to be desired. Today as an example I stood right in front of the cashier to pick up my order and she completely ignored me and continued chatting with a friend. The first place I've seen in the last 2 years that is massively overstaffed, with high-school aged kids standing around chatting or puttering about when there are customers waiting to be served. One or two employees are hustling while the remaining 7 or 8 are just standing around looking irritated to be there. Last week, we ordered sandwiches for pickup at a specific time and when we arrived 30 minutes after our pickup time, the order was still not ready as they proceeded to fill orders for people who were ordering at the counter while we waited. Quality control and better staffing would make this place a 5-star stop. And tables to sit at would be nice, too!

Yelp
An update : now at $19 for a bakers dozen , and putting wholesale customers before their front counter in terms of availability, I can no longer support this business . This is probably the last time I can come here . They've hiked prices and at faster pace than other places (yes I know inflation is a thing , but this is really getting to be disproportionate). Their service is getting worse , and their selection ever more unavailable . Sad that this started out good and went downhill , but the only thing left here is the actual bagels , which are not bad , but not worth the price or the drive for me .
google avatar

Dara R.

Yelp
I just bought take out bagels at wicked bagel this morning for the first time and boy are they delicious! I'm a New Yorker, born and raised and these are just like New York Bagels. Yay!

Yelp
Donut $2 So good!! Soft almost couldn't lift it up generous amount of filling Not too big Regular dunk donut size Not too sweet Bagels $11 which is not bad considering how much smoked salmon you get (2-4 layers) red onion Caper cucumber Sandwiches including hot and cold

Yelp
I have been going to Wicked Bagel in Lexington for quite a long time primarily because it's right up the street from me. However, there is no other reason to do so, since the folks working there toast a simple bagel or make a bagel sandwich. I have asked for dark toasted and more times than I can count, the bagel is barely toasted. I just had a cheese and tomato melt and it wasn't even melted. The only warmth came from a toasted bagel. The primary reason I am writing this post is since I can't find an email for the store.
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
I have frequented Wicked Bagel in East Lexington numerous times; pre-Covid and post covid. I love this place! The bagels are made daily and are a perfect blend of the harder outer crust and doughy inside. The varieties are plentiful and the options as good as any other shop. You can also pick up a coffee or tea or juice with your order. And, don't forget donuts that they make on weekends!! Get there early before they are gone; you won't be disappointed. Wicked Bagel is locally owned and operated and I highly encourage giving them a try.
google avatar

Sara B.

Yelp
First time trying Wicked Bagel, as I was in the area and needed to grab an easy lunch. And I'm always up for trying out a smoked salmon sandwich! I got it on an everything with added tomatoes and onions. Unfortunately, no capers in sight, and that's my favorite part of this sandwich besides the salmon. The bagel was also practically plain, not a great everything flavor. It was nice and chewy on the inside, though. And as you can see, a great amount of salmon. I also paid almost $3 for a coffee that tasted like water. Very sad. I would give this place another try but hesitantly.
google avatar

Kathy A.

Yelp
One of the bright sides of Covid is working from home and being able to hit this place pretty much every day. A bad habit I need to stop in 2021. But- the bagels are incredible. Fresh, chewy. Never once had an issue with service. Cream cheese is next level. There is one girl who goes light on the CC- the slender female with the rainbow pin in her hat- DIG DEEPER INTO THE CC!-but everyone else is heavy enough handed. I've never had the sandwiches- but had a fresh donut once. Coffee is eh- but I'm not here for the coffee. I'm here for the bagels and they are best this side of the Mississippi.
google avatar

Mira W.

Yelp
Wicked Bagel provided food for both the kiddush lunch after my son's bar mitzvah and for the out-of-towners brunch the following day. Everything was excellent!! We're so lucky to have such a great bagel place so close by -- with both excellent bagels and excellent customer service.
google avatar

Tristan W.

Yelp
The bagels themselves are fine, but the staff can't be bothered to get your order right. And when you get home to find out your to-go breakfast sandwich is instead a tuna salad (which tasted not fresh; one bite and I immediately tossed it in the trash), you start to wonder why you keep wasting your money here. At least I've finally learned my lesson. I won't be back.
google avatar

Kweilyn C.

Yelp
Hands down the best bagels and bagel sandwiches in greater Boston. Highly underrated. We come here weekly!

Ian P.

Yelp
The offerings are tasty when done right. However, there seems to be a lack of management, or improper training, or insufficient staffing, and clearly little in the way of quality control. After several previous mishaps, I took a break from ordering here but tried again today. Ordered 3 sandwiches online (2 egg sandwiches, and one garlic bagel toasted with cream cheese). Ordered at 10am; app said it would be ready around 10:15; at 10:16am app said it was ready for pickup; when I went to the window they said it had not been started yet... so what good is the order tracker? Order was ready at 10:22; but when I was handed the bag (and good thing I checked!) one sandwich was missing... seriously folks, if the receipt says 3 items and there are only 2 in the bag, this is a pretty obvious error-- so maybe check before saying it's ready? So waited a few more minutes for them to unwrap the sandwiches to verify which was the missing one, and then prepare it. Finally got the order at 10:28, and took it home.... to discover that two of the orders were wrong. Nice going, Wicked Bagel! And if you ever walk into the store to order you'll see that sometimes you have to clamor to get their attention because the teens working there are more intent on gossiping with each other then doing their jobs. I know it's hard to get proper staff these days, but this is not rocket science and there needs to be managerial oversight. So, sorry, but you're no longer worth my time and $.
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
Pros: Good variety of bagels Fresh bagels Parking lot offers many spaces Cons: Slow service Under-trained staff My experience: I visited for the first time today. There was a line when I arrived. It moved slowly, but I wasn't in a rush so I didn't care. My order was simple: one chocolate chip bagel, not toasted. No toppings. And a medium coffee. The girl behind the register got my coffee, so no problems there. I waited about five minutes for my bagel. You receive a number & they call it when your order is ready. When I arrived home with my food, I realized that they had toasted my bagel.
google avatar

Mytia S.

Yelp
Ordered from this place all the time. The pastrami, lox and the eggceptional are very very good. The portion on the lox is amazing. Strongly recommend.
google avatar

Masha S.

Yelp
Don't let's this gimmicky name fool you, this bagel shop is LEGIT. They are all about their bagels and it shows. We made a video about our experience if you want to check it out:) https://youtu.be/osoreJRwWdY

Tyler W.

Yelp
Literally left without my food. That I paid for. Mice scurried around. Running out of the kitchen and towards the bathroom. Early morning too.
google avatar

Abby L.

Yelp
Decorated very nicely and staff is very kind. In this small of area, probably the best bagels. There are some better places in Cambridge but this place definitely beats out Bruggers for me.
google avatar

Kevin Z.

Yelp
Recently, I ordered a standard eggceptional. The sandwich didn't come with eggs. This place severely lacks quality control with how frequent people complain about their service. Buyers beware, check your order before leaving the store. And I mean opening it up in front of them

Patrick H.

Yelp
This place makes terrific bagels, they really do. But, man, they make it hard to love them and after the most recent price hikes, I need to take some time off from Wicked Bagel. They have always been disorganized - employees who are standing around, not knowing what to do, while others are going at a mile a minute. Expect to wait quite a while for your order here, and to be confused as to why they don't start an order before you pay (leading to long, long, lines). They have an order-ahead system that works well, but often need 15+ minutes for a single bagel sandwich to come out (and then they are rarely actually brought from the back of the kitchen to the front). For me the last straw was the price of a bagel sandwich jumping to over $7 with tax - four years ago it was $5, and last year it was $6. $7 is quite a lot for a takeaway bagel sandwich.
google avatar

Jasmine Y.

Yelp
The bagels are good but the service is not. The staff has messed up my sandwich numerous times. I have received bacon/egg/cheese without bacon, etc... luckily I noticed before leaving so they corrected the issue. Today I got a sandwich to eat during work for lunch - the Turkey Delight - and I just opened it to find NO TURKEY.... I am super disappointed, especially when this cost me $8, and Turkey is the main part of the sandwich. I can't even go back because now they are closed for the day. Make sure you check your food before you leave the building.....

Yelp
When I first heard word of a new bagel shop opening in my neighborhood I was pretty excited. I think it is a great addition to the area, which needs a few good breakfast options and some coffee variety as well. I'm a bit late to review since I did wait for the initial excitement to settle down a bit before visiting. I have a touch of 'crowd-anxiety' and can become a little overwhelmed in a long line. The shop's early hours are perfect for my schedule and also make it easy to beat the crowds at peak times. Finally the day came when I saw very few cars in front of the shop (this doesn't happen often) and knew it was time to make my move. I was happily surprised with the bagels and think I can actually consider myself a regular at this point. I was pleased with the friendly-factor on my first couple of visits and was even referred to as 'miss' versus the dreaded 'ma'am' I tend to hear lately ...sigh. The joy was short-lived, however, as I was called ma'am on a following visit. Now I find it fluctuates, but sadly sets the tone of my day. Being referred to as ma'am cuts like a knife. I have a few favorite local spots where those titles are not used to greet me, yet I feel very welcomed. It's not necessary. I make sure to slather on the wrinkle cream now before heading in for a bagel. I've only had the plain bagels on every visit thus far, because that's what I like. Wicked does them well and I love the generous amount of cream cheese slathered on. The coffee is one of my favorites in this general area. The menu offers a decent variety of bagel sandwiches which I certainly must try in the near future. The employees have not all won me over yet. There are a few regular and consistent friendly faces, but customer service is still a bit 'hit or miss'. The ordering system doesn't always flow perfectly and I noticed employees becoming a bit flustered at one another a couple of times, especially when the line is longer. There is a very sweet man who assists in the dining area. We had a brief conversation at the cream/sugar station recently. He seems to love his job and I admire his interactions with customers. There is not a lot of seating, but due to the busy factor, I prefer to take my food to go. I really love having Wicked Bagel in the neighborhood. Lose the 'miss/ma'am' nonsense and I will love you even more.

Kevin H.

Yelp
Great place to eat. The bagels were amazing. Quick and easy to find for those from out of state.

Yelp
Good bagels - made fresh and you can really taste the difference. Their online ordering is a breeze, and you can pick up from a window for maximum safety/social distancing. The employees are really friendly, and they have a wide variety of spreads and sandwich options too. The breakfast sandwiches are okay - nothing out of this world, but definitely satisfies a craving. Coffee is okay - their nitro is good and affordable (no extra charge for milk/almond milk which I like). They have donuts on Fri/Sat/Sun! Came around 9am and they still had every flavor available. Their donuts leave something to be desired, but they're $1.99 each so I didn't feel too bad about getting a few. They aren't like the big fluffy yeasted donuts you'd get at a specialty shop, they were similar to what you'd get at Dunkin' but fresher and with some more interesting flavors. I think the flavors rotate too..... Nice to see how local restaurants have adapted to Covid-19 times, and this shop is doing a great job at keeping their employees and customers safe. Will definitely stop by again to pick up a dozen + spreads (I think they also offer discounts on dozens every last Friday of the month!).

Yelp
We've gone here twice and both were slightly lack luster visits. The first we got a half dozen bagels and cream cheese. I found the bagels to be good but not as dense as a NY style bagel that I was expecting. We were pretty bummed that the day after we got the bagels they got incredibly stale. They were tough to cut and the only way edible were if they were toasted. Even toasted they weren't very good. I've never had this kind of trouble with good bagels elsewhere. We decided to give it a second try today and get sandwiches. I ordered a tuscan and my boyfriend ordered an egg sandwich bagel. When we got home with everything and opened them up we noticed that they mixed up the bagels for the two sandwiches. My boyfriend ended up with my everything bagel (which he hates) and we didn't want to go all the way back to have them correct it so the mix up was a bummer. The sandwiches were good but my boyfriend was definitely soured by the bagel mix up especially after our first experience not being great. The place is okay and I recommend getting and eating bagels day of and it's worth it.

Yelp
Not from the area, but very glad we stopped in. Bagels were fresh, for the turkey delight was delicious! the turkey and bacon were also good quality, service was friendly. If I lived nearby, I'd visit it again. Thank you for a wonderful lunch.

Nikki D.

Yelp
I have died and gone to bagel heaven. Originally a New Yorker... better yet... a Long Islander... It's really hard to have bagels up here that would even compare to home. I've been living in lexington for 4 years and I can't believe I'm just coming here now. I almost cried when I inhaled my breakfast sandwich.
google avatar

Kelly B.

Yelp
I found this place to be delicious. The bagels were amazing. I got the Tuscan. My hubs got the ultimate French toast and my daughter plain. The bagels were perfect. Customer care 100%. Every time I ride by on the bike path I want to stop and get something. I would definitely recommend.

Jeff B.

Yelp
I had left a review several years ago complimenting the food but was very critical of the service. I owe an update. The service has gotten far better and the food is still really good.
