"During a tour of the more-than-700-year-old Wieliczka Salt Mine, you’ll travel through a labyrinth of underground corridors and stairs leading to a variety of fantastically shaped chambers, chapels, salt sculptures, and subterranean lakes. Exploring with a guide is essential, as the mine is home to nine separate levels and more than 2,000 excavated chambers. The Tourist Route, which starts at the Daniłowicz Shaft, takes about three hours to complete but covers only a small stretch of this fascinating underworld. For a more adventurous experience, choose the Miners’ Route expedition, which begins at the Regis Shaft (about a 10-minute walk from the main Daniłowicz Shaft) and allows guests to try their hand at working underground. The salt mine is very popular, so buy tickets far in advance, either online or from a trusted tour operator. And wear comfortable shoes—a visit here involves a lot of walking."

Poland Named The World’s Cheapest Destination For Solo Women Travellers

Recognised as a historical landmark that has been around since neolithic times, this salt mine is presented as a notable site outside the main cities that offers deep historical significance for visitors. - Liv Kelly

A must when visiting Krakow. We booked through Krakow Direct and were picked up/dropped off at our hotel for the tour. Short walk across road to the Salt Mines where Justine, our tour guide was superb and witty. There are lots and lots and lots of steps to go down. Thankfully you don't have to walk back up! Such a marvel of human achievement from centuries ago. The sheer size of this place is mind blowing. To think tourists only get to see less than 2% of it is difficult to comprehend. You will need comfortable shoes and it can get warm with all the walking. The chapels are breathtaking and the sculptures are fantastic. Truly worth a visit and at several points along the tour you can purchase memorabilia which is really well priced which is unusual for a tourist attraction. Give it a go, you won't be disappointed!

We went to the Wieliczka salt mine back in 2016 and now in 2025. I must admit the tour quality increased and also exhibitions and interior quality of the mine improved - I was pleasantly surprised. Guide was very informative and extensive - covering all the details of the exhibition. At times I felt a bit rushed - probably due to high volume of visitors and close time to mine closure but otherwise the tour was very nice and informative. All the staircases are new or renovated to high quality. The tour includes a lot of walking - however my 8 year old was able to make it - so can you :) - probably. Mine has a nice temperature of ~ 17 deg. C even in the winter. I recommend buying tickets up-front on official polish website of the Wieliczka salt mine. English tour guide was near native speaker quality - big thumbs up :)

The salt mine experience was excellent and definitely worth visiting. If you are in Kraków or the surrounding area, it is something you simply must see. The organization is very good, and the guides are outstanding and knowledgeable. I would strongly recommend buying tickets in advance to avoid long waiting times. Just to reassure you: although you descend around 700 stairs and reach a depth of about 110 meters underground, you return to the surface by elevator, so the visit is not as physically demanding as it may sound.

Wow, a total underground gem but in the shape of salt 🤩 It’s about an hour and a half to two hours and there is something great to see along the entire route. You start with going down stairs a fair amount may I add but very doable for most then you slowly navigate through these passageways that used to operate as functioning mine paths It’s more than an old disused mine it has history, culture and so many stories to tell We booked online through the official website and this seemed by far the cheapest option but we have a car so could get ourselves there easily so a package may suit you better There is a restaurant and museum within the mine so plenty to do outside of just the general tour Tours are done in many languages and you get given headsets to listen to the tour incase you cannot hear the tour guide as you go around. Only downside is the lifts at the end are very tight and claustrophobic, for me this wasn’t an issue but I know a few people may panic at this so please take this into consideration…. There is stairs you can take if you opt out from the lift Enjoy the pictures

A very unique and memorable experience. The Wieliczka Salt Mine is atmospheric, beautifully preserved, and full of impressive underground chambers, chapels, and salt lakes. The tour takes about two hours and is well-organized, with options for different languages. It’s definitely worth visiting at least once — the craftsmanship and history are truly fascinating. Overall, I give it a solid 4/5. 💋

Google
Fascinating visit, some great things to see but very rushed. The tour takes you on a 2 hour walk to see about 1£ of the mine you decend by foot to 135m below ground and see around 6 chambers of the mine, whi h are some of the most stunning. The guides are very knowledgeable the guy we had was really good his father and uncle worked there and he has kept the guiding going as a way to stay connected to them and the mine as a side hustle. So was invested in its story snd legacy. The tour moves at a very fast pace which was the only down side so you dont get long to take photos and really look, ok if your a in and oht tourist that just wants to say I have been but if you want to see it for longer good luck. You can go on a second trip included in the price and look at some of the stuff in more detail but time wasn't allowing for us. The exit by mine lift is great at the end its a shame that other nationalities dont know how to que as it turned in to a crush but the staff sorted it out and made people wait which was excellent. Good experiance just a bit rushed. From the train station walk past the station building/ bus station and walk straight up the hill about 100m it is pretty much next door. Don't head in to town unless your going exploring.

This is a very popular day-trip destination from Krakow, and even my local friend recommended it. I booked my ticket just one day in advance for a Friday visit, but I noticed that Saturday was already fully booked online — so I strongly suggest booking ahead through the official website. Getting there is easy with a direct train or tram from Krakow Old Town, taking about 30 minutes. Because of this, I don’t think joining a tour group is necessary. There’s a toilet available right before the tourist route entrance. The full tour lasts around two hours and involves a lot of walking, especially going down many flights of stairs. If you have knee issues, wearing a knee guard would be helpful. Overall, it’s an amazing and very well-organised tour, with plenty of information and displays that help you appreciate the long history of salt mining. A must-visit attraction.

It was absolutely amazing, and I highly recommend visiting! The tour lasts about 2–3 hours and is split into two parts: the salt mine itself and a museum tour afterwards. You can skip the museum if you’re tired. I paid 143 Zł, which I think is totally fair for such a unique experience. The tour guide was fantastic—very knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and open. There’s a lot of walking and many stairs,😂 so I’d recommend comfortable shoes and clothing suitable for moving around. It’s definitely suitable for children above a certain age and for older visitors as long as they’re fairly mobile, but it’s not ideal for anyone with limited mobility. As for the highlights: the first massive hall was breathtaking, the two underground lakes were stunning, the underground church was on another level, and the final hall left me completely amazed. All in all, I learned so much that day and had an unforgettable adventure. An absolute must-see!
