Kyoto Coffee Shops That Will Turn You into a “Coffee Person” | Bon Appétit

"Run by a husband-and-wife team near the Kamo River bike path, this tiny, Instagram-famous shop even rents out picnic kits (cute seating included) for customers to take to the river. They roast beans in-house; the coffee impressed the reviewer, and the cheese-and-honey milk bread toast was highlighted as one of the most delicious things they ate in Kyoto. The interior is small and antique-filled, though many patrons opt to picnic outside." - ByRachel Karten

Amazingly beautiful interior, very cozy and calm, spending 1-1,5 hours is easy. I haven't tried the picnic yet due to the weather, will definitely come back. Coffee is good (not the top notch) but the atmosphere is fantastic. Tried coffee : daughter, father and Ethiopia, I like daughter and father the best. Staff are very friendly and communication in English went smooth. Reservation is a must, don't come here without a reservation.

Best place I’ve ever been to in my whole life. It’s like what the inside of my mind looks like, brought to fruition. If you love coffee, antiques, vintage, eclectic, intimate, cottage-like settings… this is the very place for you. It made me so nostalgic, I could easily spend hours in there and write the next greatest piece of literature. The coffee was exceptional! Different varieties to choose. The honey cheese toast was delectable, and I will be repeating the recipe in my own home. (I’ve always liked cheese and honey together — but they just do it so exceptionally) anyway, can’t say enough good things about this place, other than I will be revisiting many times, since I’m here for a month. Definitely don’t miss this special spot, and book reservations in advance, as it’s quite popular, and only seats about 8-10 people at once comfortably. Thank you for being so hospitable, and putting your heart and effort into your service and presentation. 🙇🏻‍♀️

Amazing experience from ambience of the cafe to the friendly and personable customer service. Loved the story behind the cafe, we had a chance to say hi to the husband and he was super welcoming. We tried out almost every food item on the menu and they all did not disappoint. Loved the honey cheese toast! If you have a chance to check it out for their light bites, coffee, and nostalgic vibes, it’s definitely worth the visit!

Incredibly good HONEY CHEESE TOAST but you MUST reserve through their website if you want to go here. And if you’re in Kyoto, I think you should!!! :) I don’t drink coffee but I heard it’s fantastic. Sadly there aren’t many non-coffee options. I think it’d be better if they had matcha or some refreshing drinks. But hey, their fresh orange juice was great too, they blended a frozen orange right in front of me and it was the perfect sweetness hehe The star of the show was their honey cheese toast 🥹 I think they drizzled it with a bit of olive oil. Maybe it’s easy to remake, but I’ve never tasted anything like it before and I’ll definitely come back for it The staff were all super welcoming and friendly. I also think the reservation system makes things way better for customers. no waiting outside so it’s much less stressful If you’re using a bicycle, there’s a paid parking area ¥100/12hr, just 40m away. Would recommend this to anyone visiting Kyoto!

Lovely cafe, that needs online booking several weeks in advance! Only 9 seats at the time! Lovely atmosphere! They are well known for their coffee and honey/cheese toast- DELICIOUS!!! You could also book to take equipment and seat by the river. Cards accepted

We opted to have a picnic by the nearby river across the street. We brought our own food to complement the coffee provided, which was delicious and kept warm in a thermoflask. Amazing picnic experience in spring below the cherry blossom trees. Do make a reservation to guarantee a spot.

A lovely cafe where I went for breakfast, having made a reservation several weeks prior. It is a small cafe that can sit 8 people at one time. It is full of character! The coffee was very good, and so was the cheese and honey toast. We paid a total of £5 pp (less than 1000 yen) including the reservation fee. Card payments accepted.

Google
It’s an extremely aesthetically pleasing coffee house with good vibes. However, I must give 1 star only because I can’t helped but to feel this is a rip off for the picnic experience. First of all, in the website they indicate that picnic basket cost is 1,500 yen for up to 4 people. But what they failed to mention is that it’s 1,500 yen PER PERSON. And the thing that is most unreasonable for us is that even though we paid 4,500 yen for 3pax, we only get 1 basket and we are not even able to have 2 types of coffee to try. (My brother prefer the bold taste while 2 of us prefer to take milder taste) If we paid for 4,500 isnt it just fair if we can get at least 2 types of coffee? Why we are forced to pay extra for lesser things? The picnic itself is done in a public park so it should not be any additional cost. It’s just felt unreasonable and disappointing. It’s a shame really because it ruined the whole experience that could be very positive. I hope the owner able to look this over more reasonably.

Yelp
Reservations-only coffee shop? Only in Japan. We had booked a coffee picnic reservation in advance, but sadly it rained and our picnic was not able to happen. Fortunately, they were able to squeeze us in inside and we were able to enjoy the coffee and cute vibes. Father blend, iced cafe au lait and honey cheese toast were all solid. Not the best coffee ever (3 stars), but the antique vibes of this place are unmatched (+1 star). Great service, too.

Yelp
This is a hidden gem!!!! We arrived about 10 minutes before they closed. We got stuck trying to find a cab to get there on time and they were not going to let us in. The owner (husband/father) allowed us in seeing that we seemed to be distraught that they were really not going to let us in. We sat down, ordered coffee and he happily served us. When I tell you that the coffee was well worth it.. I mean definitely worth it. But I suggest to get there way before they close! since we weren't going to be able to come back the next day we decided to buy their packaged coffee to take home as gifts for the family.

Yelp
I think you need to have reservations to get in or else it's pretty doomed. The vibes of this place is pretty unbeatable. I love the outside so much and the overall inside ambience is pretty nice as well despite how small it is. I had the "daughter" and honey cheese toast. Idk if honey cheese toast is a thing anywhere in America but that honey cheese toast was pretty unforgettable to me despite how simple it sounds. I thought the waitress(not the owners) was very nice and she tried to have a conversation with me despite my basic Japanese. Idk if i'll come back for the picnic thing but I wouldn't mind having a small coffee and toast break here. *I miss Japan so much*

Yelp
This is the cutest coffee shop I have literally ever stepped foot into. This place takes walk-in and reservation as well for in dining and picnic reservation.. what?! So basically if you reserved picnic, they will provide the necessary equipment and brew coffee for a 90 mins use. As for details of whereabout or locations of picnic spots, I'm unsure if you are free to do yourself or they will arrange that too. They have an official website with all the info! But I was lucky enough to get a walk in spot, as the shop is extremely small. Don't go with more than a party of 2 lol. Just a pair is good enough. And the coffee offering wife and husband offers are all dark roast. So you are definitely getting some of that Kissaten style coffee. I got an Ethiopia single origin dark roast. I sat behind the counter so I had a clear view of every single brewing equipment and coffee making front row seat. It was so cool! Lovely staffs as well!

Yelp
Omg, the cheese toast is to die for. What a cool concept this place is. They do wonderful pour over coffee in the tiniest closet of a restaurant. Essentially the only real food item is their cheese toast which is a cross between an elevated grill cheese and French toast. The bread, the cheese, the honey and pepper is the perfect combo. A real treat. Service is so personal as the wife really runs the show! Make a Resy to be sure to get a spot. Or plan to go for a picnic as they'll make a wonderful basket to take away and you can make a quick jaunt to sip the coffee and eat your toast by the canal.

Yelp
My favourite coffee shop visit in Kyoto! No doubt that coffee and food are great! What's more, every piece of decorations and furnitures are vintage style, with the warm light, making the small room very cozy and comfortable. They also offer furniture and food order for the picnic, since the cafe is walking distance from the river.

Yelp
The nicest owners in one of the cutest coffee shops I've ever been too. Coffee was some of the best I've ever had since they take the time to make it. Even the food was incredible and the ambience can't be beat.
