40 New Restaurants and Bars That Have Opened in San Diego - Eater San Diego

"Trust Restaurant Group has rebranded and reopened its sidewalk scoop shop adjacent to its Italian restaurant, Cardellino. Now called Wild Child Ice Cream, the walk-up window is open Tuesday through Sunday with a menu of nostalgic, chef-created flavors that include mint chip, malted chocolate brownie, lemon meringue, and tie-dye, a colorful sorbet made with fresh raspberries, pineapple, and orange." - Candice Woo

Located in a corner spot in Mission Hills and it’s street parking only. You order at the window— no indoor seating but there were a couple of benches by the store. No wait on a Tuesday afternoon. It was nice to sit on the bench and enjoy the sun with some ice cream. They offer cup ($7), cone ($9), or pint ($12). Tried out a few different flavors and I opted to get a split scoop of Lemon Meringue Pie and the Wise Ox (vanilla ice cream with strawberry balsamic and olive oil cake pieces). I thought those two flavors went well together!

Google
Great local take out ice cream counter in the heart of mission hills! You can tell the ice cream is freshly made and crafted with care and real flavors/ingredients. Only down side is at the time we went there is no seating area so we enjoyed ours along the walk back to the car. Serving size for the smallest was plenty for us and the staff was very kind! Will be back soon to try more flavors!

Google
This surprised me. One of the best ice creams I’ve ever had and my new favorite in San Diego. I’m a regular at Salt & Straw and Mutual Friend but this Cookies & Cream was amazing. Big ol’ chucks of Oreo and something chocolately in the bottom of the cone. Very good waffle cone, legit samples, honest scoops. 10/10. I’ll definitely go here and avoid the Little Italy zombies and parking hell.

Google
Yummy ice cream at Wild Child! We ordered a rocky road and cookies and cream cone and thought they were very tasty. Really loved the cones! Definitely recommend, very friendly and quick service.

Google
New ice cream shop by the Trust group. They use premium ingredients so the price matches. It is very creamy because they use higher fat milk. I highly recommend. Will definitely be back to try the other flavors. They only let you sample up to 2 flavors. Cons- it’s a walk up window so you have to do take out. The street parking is horrible.

Google
Probably the most expansive scoop I have had. But so so good. Best ice cream! I had the blue berry crunch. Worth the cost. Very good. I will be back to get more and try the other ice cream flavors.

Google
2 stars because the removal of the soft service ruined my life. Many other great ice cream competitors, 0 other soft serve spot in the area. As a local, this is merely a rebrand of Mr. Trustee’s. Flavors are more decadent and kid-oriented.

Ariel Schwartz Chang

Google
As a local and ice cream enthusiast, I am finding Wild Child ice cream simply a rebrand of their previous Mr.Trustee without too much improvement or changes so far. They did a nice job rebranding into a more colorful and fun look but the ice cream flavors, options and just about everything is the same. Not saying the ice cream was bad before but there were definitely times when the qualities of certain flavors vary and taste less good (less flavor or the blend of elements are off from previous visit with the same flavor) I recall in the earlier days Mr.Trustee would have often changes on their ice cream rotation and towards the end it’s always the same ones…which now look familiar on the new look menu for Wild Child. I have high hopes for their decision to rebrand and am expecting a rejuvenation of passion in flavors, taste, and experience for the community.

Yelp
Go and run and get the lemon meringue. So good. Warm and friendly service. Recommend highly.

Yelp
I wish there was indoor seating but it's a cute little shop with lots of variety. I ordered lemon meringue pie strong vanilla flavor really good just wish I tasted more lemon

Yelp
Finally able to walk by and grab a dessert. I'm glad you're able to try out the flavors. I wasn't a fan of the non dairy flavors. I really enjoyed the rocky road but quite pricey for a cup and even more for a cone. I'd rather walk to Lady Acres and buy a tub for the same price. There's no place to sit but can walk around the area or have a seat on the bench out front.

Yelp
It's now called Wild Child Ice Cream, but locals know it as the ice cream window of Mission Hills. The setup was adjacent to Cardellino which is the Italian restaurant that used to operate the predecessor as well as this rebranding. A mobile ice cream truck was also available and can be rented for catering. To the left of the service window was a list of eight flavors. Half of them were ordinary while the others were creative. * Honey Vanilla - Madagascar vanilla ice cream with a hint of honey * Mint Chocolate Chip - Moroccan mint tea ice cream with mint leaves and chocolate chips * Tie Dye Sherbet - A mix of raspberry sherbet, caramelized pineapple sorbet, and orange sherbet * Cookies N Cream - Oreo cookie crumbles folded into vanilla ice cream * Malted Chocolate Brownie - Chocolate ice cream combined with homemade brownies and fudge ripple * Robin Eggs - Malted vanilla ice cream infused with Whoppers Robin Eggs candy * Strawberry Sherbet - Strawberry puree balanced with lemon juice * Lemon Meringue - Lemon ice cream mixed with lemon pie and topped with marshmallow whip The prices were high for craft ice cream at $7 for a cup, $9 for a cone, and $12 for a pint. This didn't include sales tax and a 4% surcharge either. A well-known national gourmet ice cream chain with three shops in SD County doesn't even charge that much for a cup of their frozen product. The serving size and creaminess of the Honey Vanilla I ordered was decent, yet I could not give higher than a three star rating for my experience at Wild Child Ice Cream.

Yelp
Wild Child Ice Cream stand window is located on Goldfinch and Washington in Mission Hills. This micro set up shop occupies a very small portion of its next door neighbor, Cardellini an Italian restaurant. Limited street parking only. There are no indoor seating, only limited outdoor benches. Also limited, are the selection flavor offerings for ice cream and only one vegan flavor. Would have liked more flavors, as well as organic and vegan options would be great. Service from the staffer was helpful and she let Me taste a couple of flavors, but would have been better if staffer/server wore gloves, especially if they're multitasking: handling payments and scooping ice cream. I decided on a small scoop cookies n cream in a waffle cone, which melted quickly and made a mess. Must get a cup in my next visit. The ice cream flavor was unimpressive but it wasn't overly sweet and it did however, satiate my inner wild child sweet tooth, perfect for a sunny day. Mission Hills is evolving it's circle of restaurants, shops and niche businesses. My four stars is generous because I like to support small locals and this ice cream stand window is a wonderful addition to the area for everyone to enjoy, whether or not you're a Wild Child!

Yelp
Such a great ice cream spot. Although their menu isn't a huge one, the selections they have are great. Each ice cream tasted unique and homemade (they do offer samples). Prices are very fair in comparison to the serving they give. Both times I have gone I have asked for a cone and they've tasted freshly made each time. Would definitely recommend coming by whenever craving an ice cream!

Yelp
We saw their insta promoting their brick and mortar location. Being the dessert fanatic I am the fam and I decided to make this Easter Holiday a real treat. Loved it that there was plenty of parking since it was the holiday plus low key vibes all around Mission Hills. Literally no line with the kitchen in the background busily making more gallons of ice cream goodness. I got the vanilla and cookies & cream, the missus got vanilla and malted chocolate brownie while our son got the tie dyed sorbet. My wife LOVED the chocolate brownie along with me loving the cookies and cream. There was something so delectable and dreamy about it considering it felt homemade!

Yelp
If you love bougie ice cream, this is def one to add to the list. I got the cookies and cream and the ratio of cookies in the ice cream is on point. The picture speaks for itself. The ice cream is very creamy because they use premium ingredients and higher fat milk. They offer samples but you are limited to 2 flavors. I sampled the lemon meringue pie flavor and it had the right balance of sweetness and lemon tart flavor, just like how a lemon meringue should taste. Def going to get that next time. Would love to sample the other flavors as well. Cons- parking is terrible in this neighborhood and it is a walk up window so there isn't seating for you to enjoy it there. I just grabbed a pint and went home. Price wise is just like salt n straw and all the other bougie ice creams. Service was fast because there was no one there when I went.

Yelp
We had dinner in the area and spotted this ice cream window and had to try it. I had the lemon pistachio biscotti and really enjoyed it. The flavors complemented each other well without being over powering. The biscotti was almost like cake pieces and delicious. The ice cream was really creamy and soft and well made. Everyone enjoyed their flavors! The servings are generous too.

Yelp
In the space that was formerly "Mr. Trustees" is newly rebranded Wild Child. Same place, new name. I didn't really enjoy this "Ice Cream", which was ultimately more ice than cream. 2.75/5. Wild Child left much to be desired for a $13.45 pint of "ice cream" (includes a 4% surcharge!?). I was in the area, so I figured I'd stop by, particularly since Yelp has been inundating me with recommendations to check out this hot new spot. Well hot it was not. I was able to sample 3 flavors- Lemon Meringue Pie, Cookies and Cream, and Salted Cookie Dough. Prior to first sampling the Lemon Meringue Pie, I thought for sure it'd be the one I'd choose, but it was underwhelming, missing the tart and creamy flavors I envisioned. I then sampled the Salted Cookie Dough, and although slightly better than the first, only the cookie dough saved it; it too wasn't very creamy. Figuring I'd better seek out a typical favorite of mine, I tried the Cookies and Cream, and again, underwhelming and ironically lacking both cookies and cream. Am I trippin'? I know I've been eating more gelato recently, but why aren't they creamy? The whole time I was sampling, all I could think about was my favorite ice cream company in PB. Since I had already sampled 3 flavors, and was planning on enjoying the ice cream with cookies, I opted for my favorite of the 3, the Salted Cookie Dough. However, when it was time for dessert, my girlfriend said the same thing, "It just tastes like ice, and the ice cream part isn't even that sweet??!?" I knew I wasn't trippin'. I don't even use the word mid, but this ice cream was definitely MID. Put this up against a $6 pint of Ben and Jerry's and I'm choosing B&J all day (currently on sale for $2.97 at a local grocer). Choosing this ice cream waa wild child. I'm a big fan of Trust Restaurant, but in my opinion this ice cream could use some work, or perhaps it's low fat and/or low dairy???!? If so, just let me know. Dang. Ordering was a bit challenging as it seemed like it was hard to hear from inside the bustling bakery kitchen. I also had to wait a little bit for someone to come to the empty window.

Yelp
MELTS TOO FAST AND MESSY (3 stars) - ICE CREAM: melts way too fast (eat before it turns to soup) - CONE: thick and sweet, no drippy butt - PRICE: decent - SERVICE: quick walk up window Ice creams, shakes, and smoothies are my weak spot. This ice cream spot took over a different ice cream spot in this location but the "CRAFT ICE CREAM" had me curiously wandering over only to discover it's like homemade ice cream which can be enjoyable when quickly served (and in smaller amounts) but less enjoyable when trying to enjoy it in larger amounts in a cone. I like that freshness but I also need my ice cream to be ice cream. :: ORDER :: HONEY VANILLA ($9) - Madagascar vanilla ice cream with a hint of honey. It was basic, nothing amazing but safe. Got this in a cone and it came with 1.5 scoops. Had I known this was a very quickly melty ice cream I would have opt for a cup. "CRAFT ICE CREAM" stood out and the texture of their ice cream was creamier and meltier. I could not enjoy my ice cream in the way I wanted to. I'm losing my self control over this meltiness and messiness. After a minute of it being handed over it starts dripping and melting everywhere (wasn't even a hot day). Napkins are a must. I had to quickly shove this down my face before it turned to soup ice cream. SO, I judge ice cream shops by their cone quality. If it has a drippy butt, you'll lose a star. However, the cone was nice! After eating the dome of the ice cream the cone provided some blockage. It was thick and not brittle. No drippy butt! When I got near the bottom of the cone there was a whopper which blocks ice cream from dripping out the butt of the cone. CLEVER IDEA! Probably the first Ice cream shop I have discovered who does this. The ice cream texture I couldn't get over. Have you ever had homemade ice cream? I obviously had. The texture was very similar and think their formula emulates that. IT'S.... - ICIER. When the ice cream freezes it creates large ice crystals. Soupier with ice crystals. - MELTIER. When it's meltier it gets soupier real quick. Depending on their formula, this could be many things. Such as... too much water base (melts faster), or the churning process (compressor vs commercial - quality varies), or high sugar content - sugar doesn't have good a good freezing point (don't feel this one is the cause), lack of additives/stabilizers/emulsifiers (or none at all). I'd like to come back and try another flavor ice cream but not in a rush. Until the next review...

Yelp
I had the Berry Cap N Crunch. It was definitely tasty. I do wish there was an option for a single scoop/cone. They only let you get 2 scoops on a cone. I had asked for the cone on top of my scoop in a cup and I was told that it would cost 9 dollars regardless of if I had one or two scoops with a cone. I'm glad she told me because I ended up just getting a scoop in a cup for 7 dollars versus paying 9 dollars for more ice cream than I wanted. I would come back if in the neighborhood. FYI, it is a walk up window. There is is no seating.

Yelp
LOVED their ice cream! I liked their walk up vibe but wish there was seating besides two random benches. It was a bit pricey but I would say the price was fair since the quality was so good. Love that they put a whopper on the bottom of the waffle cones

Yelp
Mr Trustee Creamery is now called Wild Child, not (Wild Flower like I thought) but the ice cream is still just as delicious. I highly recommend ordering the malted chocolate fudge brownie because its decadent, chocolate malted goodness with chewy brownie bites! Its AMAZING!
google avatar

Yelp
Parking can be tough and there isn't really anywhere to sit but it's a super cute neighborhood to walk around and the ice cream was good!

Yelp
This was my first time trying Wild Child and it was just OK, in my opinion. All of the flavors sounded delicious. I chose to sample 2 of them- salted caramel cookie dough and peanut butter. The gal working the window didn't even tell me which was which, she just handed me the spoons with no comment. The salted caramel cookie dough didn't taste like anything- the flavor was so bland. I opted for peanut butter and cookies and cream. The flavor was not anything special, especially for $7 (plus a 50 cent up charge for the second flavor). San Diego has many more fun ice cream locations- to me, this isn't one of them.

Mike K.

Yelp
I have been to wild child recently and absolutely love the ice cream there The flavors change each month it seems so if you find you like something , get a lot of it before it is gone I recently had to get a pint of the peanut butter lovers flavor ... peanut butter , nougats and Reese's chunks in it Soooooooooo good !! I had to buy a pint so I can eat a bit of it each day , great after dinner treat I even bought two cones to break up and mix in with it too ... the cones are light flavored and easy to eat I like how everything is so fresh from there

Kym B.

Yelp
The best ice cream in town. We visited San Diego from out of town and we saw the wonderful reviews and I knew we had to try it. THE BEST! Fun and unique. Creamy and great flavors. The service was wonderful. Smiling and it looked like they enjoyed their job. As for the ambiance all I can say is Groooooovy! I love the colors and vibe. Can't wait to be back there at the end of the month . I've been dreaming of this ice cream since we left.
google avatar

Matthew S.

Yelp
Wish I read the reviews first. The ice cream was overpriced, melted very fast, brownie flavor was more of a brownie with ice cream around it than ice cream with brownie in it. This place used to have the absolute best soft serve ice cream but they got rid of it for mediocre "craft" ice cream. Bring back the motherf'in soft serve!!!!!
google avatar

Lola Z.

Yelp
Yummm! Tried the mint chip. The waffle cone with a heap of icea cream was delish. ~$10. Friendly service. There are 2 benches out front but were taken so we strolled around the neighborhood. Will def be back!

Yelp
Came to wild child yesterday for the first time and the ice cream was DELICIOUS! I got the malted chocolate brownie and the robin egg in a waffle cone. They were both so tasty and i can't wait to try the other flavors. The only reason i didn't give a 5 star was i feel $10 for an ice cream cone is very over priced. I live very very close to here and wish i could come multiple times a week cause i always have a sweet tooth however $10 every time is a bit much. I also wish they had a vegan flavor for my wife that wasn't sorbet. she loves ice cream but has limited options due to an allergy so we usually have to get different desserts. Besides that the ice cream here is lovely!

Alex W.

Yelp
Stopped here today and got a salted cookie dough ice cream and it was THE BEST cookie dough ice cream I've ever had. I typically don't finish large cones but I devoured that one!

Wen T.

Yelp
first time back since rebranding from mr trustee... very disappointed that my favorite honey vanilla is off the menu and replaced with triple vanilla that is good but nothing special. the waffle cone was also stale and soggy, for 11 bucks after tax and tip expected better.

Kenzie M.

Yelp
My fiancé and I went today to get an ice cream after dinner. We ordered a cone of the peanut butter lovers and right away we noticed it tasted sour. We questioned if the ice cream went bad or if the ice cream was supposed to taste this way. Regardless, disappointing as a cone is $9.

Jenna-Leigh S.

Yelp
Best ice cream! I love the variety. Definitely recommend next time you visit San Diego to stop by and try!
