Wildhive Callow Hall (Ashbourne, Derbyshire) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"This Victorian country house, set at the southern edge of the Peaks District, has been a hotel for some time, but it’s only after a thorough renovation by its new owners that it’s joined the top ranks of English countryside luxury hotels. The original 1850-vintage Callow Hall house contains 15 colorful, luxe, and stylish bedrooms, while the outlying accommodations include a pair of self-sufficient two-bedroom treehouses and another 11 cozy cottage-style “hives.” The Garden Room restaurant serves a seasonal menu crafted from exquisitely sourced local produce, including herbs grown in the hotel’s own garden." - Tablet Hotels

Wildhive Callow Hall Hotel Review | Hotels Above Par

"A bucolic, blissfully isolated five-star country-house retreat on the southern edge of the Peak District near Ashbourne, this reinvented 19th-century estate (originally built by H. J. Stevens for John Goodwin Johnson) pairs a back-to-nature philosophy with bold, kaleidoscopic interiors by Isabella Worsley. Think London maximalism meets the shires: vivid patterns, layered colours and whimsical touches animate roomy main-house suites with generous tubs, statement pillows and cosy fireside beds. For a more immersive stay, beehive-shaped Scandi-style cabins and treehouses sit in the woods as self-contained boltholes—complete with kitchenettes, chic living areas, outdoor tubs (and indoor showers for the modest)—perfect for recluses or romantic weekenders. Dining is seasonal, elevated British pub fare with a European tilt (local steaks, gourmet burgers, chicken and famously indulgent triple-cooked chips) served beneath a glass terrace dotted with plants and candles. The estate leans into outdoor life: bikes to tackle the 13-mile Tissington Trail, rolling hills and grazing livestock on the doorstep, vintage-shopping and tea in nearby Ashbourne, a small spa and cosy communal touches like a drawing room with a massive jigsaw and the simple pleasure of tea and a book. With about 15 rooms, it’s an ideal spot to switch off—solo or as a couple—rates from roughly $379 per night."

We stayed in one of the large dog-friendly treehouses last week and it was absolutely perfect. Beautifully decorated and thoughtfully equipped with everything you could need, including a full kitchen. Treehouse guests can still enjoy breakfast and dinner in the restaurant in the main hotel, both were outstanding, featuring locally sourced ingredients cooked to perfection. What really sets Callow Hall apart, though, is the team. Nothing was ever too much trouble, and even after our stay, when there was a small mix up with the invoice, it was resolved quickly and professionally. Thank you to everyone at Callow Hall for making our stay so memorable - we’ll definitely be back!

Stayed in a Hive for the Husband’s birthday. Some lovely balloons and card on arrival. Hives are a lot smaller than they appear in photos, very compact and on the cosy side. Personally would book a room in Callow Hall if we were to stay again. The journey to the Hive in the buggy is not for the faint hearted. Sadly no hot tubs are included with the standard Hives. I assume only the family sized ones. The 100 acre shower products provided were incredible. The Dutch bikes we hired sadly didn’t have much braking power which was slightly unnerving. Menu for room service is rather limited but the chips ordered were possibly the best I’d ever eaten. Ordered again for lunch in the restaurant and equally delicious. Shame some of the rattan chairs are slightly battered in the restaurant. Not much of a spa on site, but the massages we had were excellent. The building and decor are beautiful, and all the team who work there are really friendly and helpful.

When we found the local pub on our wintry walk closed, we called to ask if Callow did bar snacks and if they allowed dogs...the welcome we received was phenomenal, the service, food, drinks all exceptional and being allowed into a comfortable sitting room with an open fire with our dogs was so lovely. Owing to the fact that the staff seemed to genuinely love dogs, it was one of the best and most unexpectedly reasonable and delicious lunches we've had out in a long time. Well done Callow, this lunch made our January. Thank you

We had the most wonderful stay here. We were celebrating our 40th Wedding anniversary with family. We booked through Dana at the events team at Callow Hall. Nothing was too much trouble. She arranged for us to have one of the small function rooms - The Library - which was lovely. Made the evening very special and intimate. The food and service was excellent. Enjoyed our buggy rides up to our 'Hive'. The log cabins are brilliant. The rooms in the hotel were great too. All very luxurious and cosy. The toiletries are amazing too. Thank you to all the team at Callow Hall, you made our stay very special.

Very disappointing. We are locals that like to stop in and bring family and friends for the beautiful view but today might be the last time. The average Americano in town is £3-3.50 so I’m not exactly sure how Callow Hall can justify £5 for an Americano that was served lukewarm at best. Their prices are over inflated and the service is slow. While attempting to pay so we could go home for a hot coffee 3 separate serves passed us and it took more than 3 minutes to be acknowledged while standing at the bar to pay. As beautiful as the view is this does not make up for the service and quality to justify their prices. Save your money and pop into any of the many coffee shops in town for better service, better quality and lower prices. In addition to the over inflated drink prices, we made reservations for a special occasion for a nice meal which also lacked quality for the prices. For a starter we ordered octopus which was massively over cooked, it was like chewing through rubber. The mains were nice but once again not the quality you expect for the prices. Overall very disappointing experiences and I wouldn’t recommend when you can get better quality and service locally.

An excellent spot for couples and families alike. ||We absolutely loved staying in our Hide which was a really special experience. An easy walk to and from the main house but the option of the golf buggies were excellent.||Our dog was spoilt rotten and we were able to bring her to all of the rooms in the main house apart from the restaurant. Wonderful to have so many different rooms to relax in.||The food in the restaurant was top notch for our dinner there.||We would love to come back one day.

Stayed here for one night in late November in one of their cosy Wildhives, it is a lovely escape. The room was beautifully rustic and comfortable, a touch chilly on a crisp Derbyshire evening, but the blankets were plush and it added to that authentic outdoor vibe. Location is a total winner: 5 minutes’ walk to the Ashbourne end of the Tissington Trail. We strolled up to Tissington village. Next time we’ll definitely hire one of their bikes or e-bikes (they have plenty available on site) and ride the full 13-mile trail. The food… I’m not exaggerating when I say it’s some of the best I’ve ever had anywhere. Dinner was outstanding: perfectly seared scallops to start, followed by calf’s liver cooked pink and silky with incredible depth of flavour, finished with a cracking local cheeseboard and a glass of port by the fire. Breakfast the next morning was just as good – proper quality ingredients, everything cooked spot-on. And the cherry on top: we booked a 60-minute massage in the little spa on Sunday morning before checkout. Absolute bliss. My therapist was brilliant, worked out every knot after knot, and we both floated out completely relaxed. The perfect full-stop to the stay. Peaceful, beautiful, friendly staff, incredible food and that spa treatment sent us home properly recharged. If you’re anywhere near the Peak District, do yourself a favour and book Wildhive. You won’t regret it.

Not great. Lovely location. Not been since the added conservatory on the back. Service was pretty poor considering the price and quality of the venue. No-one came to our table once food served, noone asked how we were getting on, has staff meeting and redressed the whole dining room in front of us, without asking once if we needed anything. £15 for a mulled wine I could drink (never left a drink before) due to over seasoning with cloves. £17 for a spritz drink for my wife which lacked any kind of flavour. Wish we'd gone elsewhere for my wife's birthday treat with family.||Expected a much better experience than we received, especially for the money we spent. Chalk and cheese with the venue we went for breakfast at back nearer home in Rowsley. Much better options available locally. Overall, disappointing
