With a New Ballard Location, Wildwood Spirits Is a Distillery on the Rise | Eater Seattle

"After years of setbacks — the COVID pandemic, a nearly five-month concrete delivery strike, and a warehouse outside Tacoma that burned down after Wildwood’s distilling equipment was stored there — I attended the long-awaited grand opening of Wildwood’s Ballard tasting room and distilling space and left impressed. The packed celebration felt like a sigh of relief: a silent auction raised $10,000 for the Ballard Food Bank, snacks were catered by co-owner John Howie, and guests enjoyed an open bar pouring Manhattans and Negronis while checking out gleaming new copper stills and rows of custom barrels. Co-owner and master distiller Erik Liedholm, who brings acclaimed sommelier credentials and training from London’s Institute of Brewing and Distilling, runs a “farm to distillery” approach — using Washington State winter wheat and backyard Braeburn apples in Kur Gin, and finishing spirits in handcrafted oak that gives each batch unique nuances. Kur Gin (pronounced “cure”) has been a cornerstone: bright, citrusy and dry, it won best in show at the 2014 New York World Wine & Spirits Competition and landed on Wine & Spirit Magazine’s Top Ten that year, with numerous regional and international medals since. The distilling program also boasts recent honors — Wildwood Rendition Rye earned double gold at the 2023 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, and Stark Vatten Vodka medaled in New York in 2017 — and the new Ballard production capacity (now about two barrels a day versus the previous (Bothell) output) should allow more regular releases of fan favorites like the four-year-aged Dark Door wheated bourbon, wider distribution across the West Coast (with national expansion a long-term goal), and a tasting-room focus on classic cocktails and straight samples that showcase the spirits rather than mask them." - Brianna Gunter

I had an incredible time at Woodland Distillery. The atmosphere is warm, inviting, and full of character — you can really feel the passion and history behind the place. Our tour guide, Ryan, was fantastic — knowledgeable, engaging, and clearly proud of the craft. He shared great insights into the distilling process and the rich story behind Woodland, making the experience both educational and fun. The tasting was excellent, too — every spirit had its own unique flavor and personality. Woodland Distillery is a true hidden gem and a must-visit for anyone who appreciates quality craftsmanship and a genuine, welcoming vibe. Highly recommend!

What an excellent find! My husband and I stopped by for date night and I couldn’t be more pleased with our experience. Alex (I think!) was our bartender and super kind. They were very knowledgeable and checked in on us from time to time without being overbearing. It’s a super intimate taproom with only a few seats at the bar and additional seating in their Distillary area. The patio has seating which I’m excited to utilize this summer. I enjoyed two Gin drinks, my favorite was the Fir Elise and my husband had their version of the Old Fashioned, we enjoyed it all. The place was very clean, warm, and welcoming. It was pouring rain and such a delight to walk into a cozy and inviting atmosphere. They also offer flights, which is something I’d love to try when we return next.

We had a lovely experience at this cute little tastings room. I loved the vibe immediately from the staff. I wish I would have remembered the name of the sweet person who was so informative and engaging. I loved that we were offered a private tour of the distillery. It was fun to walk around as we sipped our gin and whiskey samples. What made the tour even better was to hear the history of the company and how well they treat their employees. The positivity definitely shines through and creates an even better customer experience. I ended up purchasing without doubt a bottle of Kur Gin. I am somewhat of a gin snob, this gin is so deliciously smooth you can drink it neat which I find to be rare for most gins. If you are looking for a tasty cocktail or want to know more about gin and whiskey stop by and visit Wildwood Spirits you won't be disappointed.

Visited from NC last week, had an amazing time having skillfully made beverages. The bartender, Alex, had a wealth of knowledge of liquor, and we had a riveting conversation about that subject. Alex made some suggestions regarding liqueurs I’d enjoy, and they were right! I’d recommend this place to anyone, and I hope Alex is doing well, as they are a gem.

A welcome addition to the core Ballard Brewery district. Solid selection of classic cocktails using their in house spirits, and affordable flights of their spirits. Excited to see the future of their rotating barrel series. Employees were fun, personal, and super helpful on info related to Ballard and Wildwood Spirits.

Excellent cocktails and super knowledgeable mixologists. Wildwood is one of my favorite spots to hang and sip in Ballard.
