All Six Urbanspace Locations Have New Owners. Can They Turn Things Around? | Eater NY

"In March I learned that Williamsburg Market shuttered with zero notice just four months after opening, a sign of how precarious the food-hall model has been recently." - Melissa McCart

I really hate leaving this review: But I just checked into my accommodations for the start of a restful July 4th Weekend (after a very arduous and difficult week) and I’m still shaking from an upsetting encounter with an employee at the Williamsburg Market. I’ve been coming to this area every summer for the last ten or so years, and the whole time have been happy to patronize the market - a well-appointed and up ’til now welcoming local merchant. But I can’t recall being treating so rudely, and so condescendingly, and being made to feel so unwelcome by the slender, sandy-haired, bespectacled middle-aged woman behind the butcher counter at the rear of the store. I keep trying to think if there was something I did wrong, something I overlooked in my behavior to have set her off but even if I had it wouldn’t have been so bad to trigger the icey hostility I received. She was impatient with me from the start, and every time I attempted to defuse the highly charged tension between us by being overtly polite, it only seemed to incite an even more rude response from her. Even the slightest thing I did seemed to trigger her: near the end of my extensive order of several items (and I should note, Williamsburg Market is not remotely inexpensive), and was waiting for a small container of cole slaw, I innocuously rested my hand on the counter in anticipation of receiving the order, she snapped at me - “I have to measure it first!” My first impulse was the just storm away, but I felt that would only make things worse, so I sheeplishly removed my hand and waited for her to finish her business so I could check out. That is just one example of the “welcome” I received. Clearly the customer was not going to be right. I suppose I could have, at any point, walked out without my purchases, and driven to a market in Florence or Northampton. Also there are plenty of roadside farmsteads, or Oliver’s Market in nearby Goshen. In future I will probably go to any of these rather than visit Williamsburg Market again. I always support small independently owned businesses like this wherever I am. But it’s sad, like having a mask pulled off of an old friend’s face to reveal a monster underneath. Heartbreaking. It sounds dramatic but that’s how my visit to the Market made me feel. And it’s just not worth it.

Soggy sandwiches. Pickles taste like cucumbers. Roast beef tastes like turkey. Over priced market

My first deep interaction with Williamsburg Market was when I met one of the owners, and I was immediately struck by his refined and thoughtful demeanor. He is a gentleman in every sense of the word—careful, intelligent, and sharp, yet humble and approachable. It’s rare to encounter someone with such a seamless blend of high emotional intelligence and finely tuned business acumen. In Western Massachusetts, known more for its agricultural traditions and slow living than fast-paced city life, he has achieved something truly remarkable: slowing the speed of business to match the warmth and rhythm of country living. The store itself is the perfect embodiment of a country market—clean, tidy, and filled with charm. It’s like stepping into a postcard of rural America, a place that deserves to be celebrated and remembered for generations. They stock a wonderful mix of local products, mainstream essentials, in-house creations, and unique items like maple syrup sugar candies or deli salads that support local traditions. Everything is fresh, beautifully arranged, and thoughtfully curated. A special shoutout to Aaron, my cashier, whose warm, casual smile and friendly service perfectly encapsulated why I love coming to Western Massachusetts. There’s something deeply genuine and fulfilling about the kindness and quality of life here, and Aaron truly reflects the ideals of Williamsburg Market. This store is not just a place to shop—it’s a slice of hilltown life, offering peace, happiness, and a connection to the local community. Williamsburg Market is a piece of that pie of happiness that you've been longing for. I can't wait to return...

Wonderful hidden gem in the area. Excellent deli and prepared foods, plus a great selection of pantry and grocery staples. Considering the size of the store and the convenience, prices are very fair. Staff are always cheerful. Never a long wait and always parking available. Plus lots of local products showcased for sale here. I stop at least once a week for a treat from the deli!

I’ve shopped here for decades, and especially in the past few years, it keeps getting better and better! Selection, service, aesthetics…and now they publish a weekly newsletter with events throughout the Hilltowns. Such an asset to our community.

This is the best place to go when you don't have the time or patience to drive to the city. Produce and meats are ALWAYS super fresh. Sure you pay a bit more but for the convenience and quality you really can't complain.

Great small town market I stop in every time I'm in town

Google
We love our local market! The staff are friendly and helpful and the market is well stocked even though it is small. All fresh foods are great quality and you can find some locally made goods as well. They have tasty meals made in house that we like to get for an elevated lunch.

Yelp
This market is an excellent stop in Williamsburg! Fresh local produce, a butcher on site, prepared foods-both hot and cold, and an excellent selection of beers and beverages. The staff is very friendly and willing to assist.

Yelp
Tis a great little independent market. Friendly staff. They have a good selection pf groceries, some great meats, and in the summer a fair amount of local produce. They have a small wine selection. A credible small town market. Obviously not the least expensive but I didn't find anything sky high in price. The store is a quaint and homey and clean.

Yelp
Wonderful store in the tradition of local town markets that know and value their customers.

Yelp
I was shopping there every weekend spending between 100$ and 200$ on mostly meat. And one day Kimberly the checker made a very Insulting comment to me and I have not been back since. I generally like to support small local businesses but I refuse to go out of my way to spend top dollar only to be insulted! Big Y has equal quality and you get a lot more for your money!

Yelp
A great store thst has been around since I was little. Back then my parents, brother and I would go for drives up near Williamsburg and stopping here was the highlight of the drive. As a child the old school.candy and feel of the store was fun and the employees always friendly. Coming back for the first time in years I am feel nostalgic and welcome like before. Though my brother is has passed away I feel.a connection to him at this wonderful store. If you have children I highly recommend this store if you want to by them a treat

Yelp
Check expiration dates, outdated milk, moldy bread, freezer burner items. $5 for a can of soup?

David M.

Yelp
A wonderful store with some of the best quality meat in the area (the steaks and mince are particular highlights) and a great range of fresh bread, fruit and veg, hot food, and much else besides. The staff are great too. Ok, it's not the cheapest but then you wouldn't expect it to be.

Yelp
It was always wonderful to have a market in the center of this small town, and very convenient for both locals and those who live further out in the hills. For a while, when the former owners announced their intention to retire, it seemed the market might be doomed. But Steve and Sean took the risk of buying it, renovating, and modernizing, all just in time for the pandemic. Now we have a fantastic little gem in town, with local beef, organic chicken, lots of fresh produce, and a big variety of specialty products. And the staff could not be nicer, making for a very pleasant atmosphere in the store. It is a boon for Williamsburg and the Hilltowns.

Yelp
While driving through the area I felt a thirst coming on, so I decided to stop in at this store to pick up a soda. Since this is the first time I have been here I didn't know what to expect, but after entering the store I was excited at what I found. The first thing that impressed me was the fact that it is actually a mini grocery store. They had a ton of fresh produce, meats as well as cheese. The deli area was incredible and if I was headed home I would have stocked up on a ton of fresh items. The rest of the store was well stocked and the only downside to this shop was that the cost was a bit high. That being said, this isn't Stop and Shop so it was definetly in reason. I can't wait to stop here again to stock up on some great items. Oh and by the way, I quenched my thirst!

Yelp
Perfect store for Williamsburg and surrounding hilltowns... lots of local produce and products, natural selections, even gluten free products! Very good steaks... fun prepared foods...real nice workers and owners... these people care about their community :)

Sally F.

Yelp
This market is simply wonderful. Clean as a whistle and the best stew beef in the world. And they always have good, clean suet for the birds. They also offer local organic produce in season and interesting products such as pure shea butter and local maple candy. I love this market and am very grateful for the wonderful job Angie and Jean have done of bringing this great place to our community for decades. Thank you and God bless!

Yelp
Always a good grocery stop but very expensive. Good quality meat. Veggies were just so so. Corn had some bruises and peppers seemed old. Only one register usually so it's a little slow getting out of there. They have everything you could possibly need though

Yelp
Convenient and a little expensive. They have actual butchers on staff that can cut to order. I always buy chicken breasts here, not much more than Big Y and much higher quality.
