Best Ice Cream Shops in San Jose and the South Bay Area | Eater SF

"Willow Glen Creamery serves a Midwestern favorite at a quaint shop in San Jose. The shop is most well-known for silky frozen custards, which are churned and blended every day with vanilla and fresh bananas. Aside from their frozen custards, patrons also love the Marble Blackberry and Tin Roof Sundae ice creams, as well as the Irish mint and red velvet frozen yogurt flavors. And treats aren’t only for humans at Willow Glen Creamery. Dogs are always welcome, and they even get a free doggie yogurt treat when they visit. Since opening in 2002, the team has expanded to a second location in Campbell." - Cathy Park

Some funky flavors as well as traditional ones here. We were allowed to taste as many as we wanted before deciding to go with Marble Black Raspberry, Old Fashioned Pralines and Cream, Mint Chip and Heaven. All delicious and light.

Went in around 11:15am on a Sunday. Parking is easy via free street parking or free nearby parking lot. No problems with seating inside or outside. Food was great, i had the Dole Pineapple Yogurt (Mini size). It tasted nice and refreshing but also fairly rich and important bit is how it didnt melt quickly. Service was solid staff were friendly and cleaned up tables as necessary. Atmosphere was nice, very pleasant and quiet for enjoying desserts.

Google
Ordered Rocky Road 5oz (the chocolate one) and Cafe latte-da 7oz. Price - Honestly, Willow Glen Creamery priced the Ice cream like a real small business. 5oz would be way sufficient for 1 person and it’s just $5.75. 👍 Taste - No compromises were made in the quality of the ice cream. The chocolate pieces in Cafe latte-da were definitely not cheap. The waffle cones had substantial thickness to it. Rocky Road had almonds in every bite. 👍 Ambiance - You’ll have a romantic/friendly setting outside, facing a fountain or you can wander the streets of Willow Glen with your lovely Ice cream 👍 I recommend Willow Glen Creamery.

Google
Amazing soft serve. Amazing service. Amazing portions. Amazing options. .we lived this place. They stacked our small soft serve with toppings of our choosing. And so friendly. There was a line but it moved fast. Parking can be tough.

Google
Great ice cream/frozen yogurt place. My partner and I wanted desert after dinner and walked around and found this creamery. The cups are fairly large so even a mini size is enough for most individuals. Don't go bigger unless you're sharing. They also have a selection of dipped waffle cones which were amazing. Line was a little long but went fast once at the counter. Total was $15 for two with a dipped medium cone with a single ice cream, and a mini with two types of ice cream. Will go again! Definitely take a walk around with the ice cream, great date night and there was even some local harpists playing music nearby that we got to enjoy.

Google
Very good ice cream. Creamy and delicious and in a very nice part of Glen Willow. Walking the streets is a spectacular journey and stopping for an ice cream was a great idea. Good selection of different taste icecream 🍦 with great outside sitting with spectacular city view. Relax and rest your legs with a tasty cone in your hand.

Google
We went there at 9.45 pm, but the energy level of the staff was still very HIGH, they suggested us the best options, scoop size is also very good, there is a very nice place just adjoining to this , to sit & enjoy the icecream … value for money !

Google
I had the vanilla custard. Also tried the Neapolitan ice cream. They give generous portions. This has got to be the biggest soft serve I've had. Wish both had more cream flavor. Waffle cone was good. There was a line after dinner but it moved quickly.

Yelp
I went here on a Monday evening with one of my friends at about 30 minutes before closing and everyone was super friendly and willing to help. I ordered the watermelon dole whip and it is such a game changer! It was not too sweet and it tasted so good. I recommend everyone to try because it's so unique that you're not able to get it anywhere else.

Yelp
Willow Glen Creamery is a nice local place that serves creamy ice cream and frozen yogurt. It's been around for decades. Nice patio seating. Service is nice, friendly, and inviting. A nice treat after dinner or anytime!

Yelp
Every time I've been to Willow Glen creamery, it's always the same consistency! They have a number of different types of ice cream, as well as frozen yogurts, and an array of toppings!! I'm not one for toppings, but I do love all their different flavors, as well as vegan ice cream! I have a number of food allergies and it's nice to know I won't get a stomach ache For eating something I like! I chose to get the vegan raspberry lemon, Italian ice and it was so tangy and smooth with the raspberry mixture. It was delicious and perfect for the rainy weather! Our server was a young college or maybe high school kid and he was very polite since my aunt and I had to quite literally read all the different ice cream choices, and then decide! He was really patient and sweet as we asked for samples also! This particular creamery only has a handful of seating and they have a gorgeous patio outside with a fountain, but it was raining so we got our ice cream to go. I will definitely be back here again hopefully when it's not raining and will be able to walk around downtown Willow Glen!!

Yelp
Had to stop in for my fix but their machines were down for cleaning!!! But it was ok because their ice cream is good too. I forgot and I think maybe the server forgot as well that we could add any toppings because only my mom was asked if she wanted toppings, oops! But always fun and great to stop in. I've been coming to the willow glen creamery since before the massive update to downtown willow glen and the creamery was just a standalone building and lawn chairs were put outside for whoever wanted to sit
google avatar

Yelp
Generous portions. Nice to find frozen custard because not too many ice cream places serve them. Wish it had more cream taste. The Neapolitan was good and also came in a generous portion. The waffle cone was pretty good and not just all sweet.
google avatar

Ashley V.

Yelp
Been coming to this creamery for a while now. My favorite ice cream flavor has been bubble gum for as long as I can remember and they have it! They also carry Dole Whip, and as a So Cal native, it tastes very similar to Disneyland's. The workers are always very polite and fast. It is also always clean, the ice cream always tastes fresh, and they have a cute neon sign. Highly recommended! P.S: they are also pet friendly and give a free fro-yo for your pup!
google avatar

Yelp
I'm not an ice cream fan, but I was pleasantly surprised with the ice cream! I had the exhausted parent which was great - it wasnt too sweet and wasnt too bitter like some other coffee based ice creams are. I did feel like the line moved a little slow, but it could be because we went in the after dinner rush. Area is noce, great place to grab and go.
google avatar

Yelp
What's there not to love about ice cream? As a dessert fan, I've had tons of ice cream in my lifetime and Willow Glen is in my top three favorites! Despite the line always being out the door, I (and it seems everyone else) never mind waiting to get my sweet fix. What sets Willow Glen Creamery apart is their ice cream consistency, flavors, and toppings. I had a huge craving for sugar that night, so we got the Pralines and Cream with cookie dough + mini M&M's. The best thing about Willow Glen is the amount of toppings they offer. I'm really picky about cookie dough and theirs is amazing, and not overly sweet. If you're not a fan of ice cream, they also do milkshakes and offer a few frozen yogurt options. It's a small shop and there's not much space inside to sit, but there is a nice outdoor area where you can enjoy your sweet treat. The cashiers are always helpful and polite despite being swamped with customers. In terms of parking, there's a small parking lot a short walk away, street parking, and parking garages in the area. Give Willow Glen Creamery a try!

Yelp
My kids each got a kids cup, but the portions were drastically different, one being about double the other. Being twins, of course there were complaints about "why does she have more?" The discrepancy seems obnoxious to be honest. Otherwise, the ice cream was good. They have Dole Whip! my husband knows how much I love it and told me to get a large so we could share it. Holy moly the large was giant I definitely bad no business getting a large size Dole Whip, but did we enjoy it? Absolutely!
google avatar

Christine H.

Yelp
It's been awhile since I've had banana-flavored ice cream with hints of chocolate...as well as a waffle cone; on my "treat yourself day because you just went through a grueling week," I got a huge scoop (they are really generous) of the "Fat Elvis," which is basically banana ice cream with bits of pb and chocolate chips; it was thick, creamy, perfectly sweet, and overall so satisfying!
google avatar

Yelp
I love coming to the Willow Glen Creamery and getting the pineapple dole whip Icecream. The pineapple dole whip soft serve Icecream is personally one of my favorites.i usually can finish one of these by myself because that's how much I love the Ice cream. I have tried the cherry dole whip Icecream flavor and I honestly wasn't a fan because it tasted like medicine to me. I like the workers here because they friendly and have fast service. They have long line here and there but it never feels long cause of how fast they go. They only have outdoor seating and is nice cause you can look around at the individuals passing by.

Yelp
I've been coming to this place since high school (2006!) and while the location moved a few yards, the quality is still amazing. I love meeting friends here on the warm days and enjoying my froyo or Treat ice cream by the water fountain and people watching. Always rotating flavors of both ice cream and froyo and great to see teenagers working hard.
google avatar

Sheila T.

Yelp
Giving 5 stars on the taste and quality of mango ice cream and Dole Pineapple Whip, as well as service! Servings are huge! Ambience is a typical ice cream shop - medium noise, no regular chairs or tables inside. There was a line of four teenagers ahead of me. It was a quick wait. Parking was in front of the shop at 8 pm on a midweek. I'd return every night if I lived closer!

Yelp
My friend and I dropped by here on a Sunday evening because she was craving some dole whip. You don't have to go all the way to Disney or Hawaii to get some, which is great. I wanted something on the more decadent side so I got a frozen custard concrete with oreos and rainbow sprinkles. I made my order at the ice cream case, and the worker went towards the back to make it. It was done pretty quickly. I paid once it was ready at the cashier. My friend and I took our ice cream outside to enjoy on the benches around. I would definitely recommend the place and come back in the future!
google avatar

Heena C.

Yelp
They have a variety of options on their menu. A great place for desserts around the location. It's a small place with no seating on the inside. They also have frozen yogurt. I got the matcha green tea in mini size. It was sufficient for me. The line was long but the service was pretty quick. I would love to try other flavors when I am around the area.

Yelp
This is a Willow Glen institution! Located in the charming Lincoln Avenue, this ice cream shop is more than ice cream. They have a LOT of flavors (hidden flavors too!!) and also other frozen treats! Smoothies, shakes, custards oh my! Then your choice is not over, they have tons of toppings and different kinds of sprinkles. The vibe is family friendly and service is good. They have seating outdoors and they are close to the plaza fountains so it really creates the perfect ambiance.

Yelp
Willow Glen Creamery is one of San Jose's iconic locally-owned creameries and it's been around for 20+ years! I've been wanting to come here and finally got a chance to visit around 8pm on a Friday night. There was only 2 people in line, so we didn't have to wait very long. Mint Chocolate Chip: 5/5 Pretty solid mint chip. Tastes exactly like how I'd expect. The portion size is HUGE so I actually had some leftover to take home. They fill up the cup a lot, so keep that in mind when you order. Next time I'll probably get the kids' size cup (5 oz) instead of the mini cup (7 oz). They also offer plastic lid covers which is nice! It wasn't busy when I went, but the place gets crazy busy. I drove by around 9pm and the line was wrapped around the sidewalk outside, so I guess people love their ice cream! Parking is hard to find in Willow Glen, but there are a few general parking lots on Lincoln Ave. (like the one behind Philz Coffee or the one behind Sushi Arashi). You can also find street parking in one of the nearby residential areas, but it's a longer walk. Pretty decently priced as well. I'd like to try a cone instead of a cup next time, but definitely recommend!

Yelp
Super cute place that really draws a crowd on the weekends. Came with some friends who are walking distance and waited in line for a short time. They have the menu outside so you can easily see what they have. They have some really unique flavors and plenty of classic flavors. The store itself is pretty small, so if you see a long line, it's because not a lot of people can fit inside the store. The staff was super sweet and very helpful. Ice cream was delicious and we will definitely be back for more.
google avatar

Yelp
There's a reason this places boasts more regulars than any other shop in downtown Willow Glen. The prices may be high, but the staff is outstanding. Always pleasant and welcoming, willing to accommodate special requests. And the staff likely reflects the work environment created by the owner, who is warm and laid back. I come here only for the Carbolite (low calorie yogurt); this is one of maybe three places in the entire Bay Area that serve it. If you have an ice cream addiction but want to cut calories, it's a must-try.
google avatar

Yelp
I had been to Willow Glen Creamery a few times and they never disappoint. The portions are always huge and the quality is great. On this particular trip, I got a mini scoop of the Exhausted Parent, which is a chocolate based ice cream with bourbon and coffee. It was so creamy and I can see why it was named as such. Definitely will be back for more when I am in Willow Glen!
google avatar

Lele Y.

Yelp
3.75 stars rounding up Delicious but a bit pricey of a treat ~ with tax came to abt $6 for fairly small 5oz scoop but a good amt of toppings are added to your order; there were toppings in between my ice cream layers too! Pistachio almond is delicious Can't wait to come back and try additional flavors!
google avatar

Cindy T.

Yelp
First time trying this ice cream spot since I'm rarely in the area or I always went to icicles. The lady who helped me was super kind and helped with samples. I was disappointed with the ube and green tea flavor. She suggested for me to try the black marble raspberry, and that was a hit! I loved the creamy ness and flavor of it! It wasn't as busy since it was raining but I love ice cream in cold weather. Will definitely be back to try some of the frozen yogurt options! Parking - You have to find street parking or an open parking structure which is where I parked.
google avatar

Jen L.

Yelp
Great spot for ice cream. You can get a scoop and sit at a table or on the benches outside around the water fountain. We had the Fat Elvis and Exhausted Parent. Fat Elvis was banana ice cream with peanut butter and chocolate chips. Exhausted Parent was bourbon coffee ice cream with chocolate chunks. We had kids with us so it was a bummer that the restroom was out of order. Being an ice cream parlor, there are many kid patrons. Kids need to be able to go potty and wash their hands after ice cream.
google avatar

Catalina L.

Yelp
Run don't walk for pineapple dole whip!!! Super delicious and creamy texture Don't have to travel to Disney or wait in those long lines either There are other ice cream flavors available, and they do samples as well
google avatar

Alisa B.

Yelp
OH BOY! This ice cream sure does melt fast... I love that they give fairly generous portions. Perks of a friendly local business. Crazy to think they have been in Willow Glen since 2002!! The birthday cake ice cream is very rich, creamy, and of course... SWEET! I enjoyed it very much, and the rainbow sprinkles inside are a cute touch. My boyfriend also got the Pralines & Cream and loved it!
google avatar

Tom L.

Yelp
The best ice cream in San Jose. The vanilla custard is the perfect treat. It's a richer smoother version of soft serve and it always hits the spot. The milk shakes here are amazing. The staff is friendly and they take the time to do things right. There are definitely long lines on the weekends (especially during the summer), but it's definitely worth the wait.
google avatar

Denny L.

Yelp
Totally forgot to take a photo, but this topped off our evening after dinner at a nearby restaurant! The outdoor seating is a nice place to chill out and enjoy your treat as well. Must try if you are craving for dessert.
google avatar

Rachel Y.

Yelp
I got the dole whip ice cream with captain crunch and mochi! The texture of the ice cream was pretty good and perfect for the weather! I would say that the mochi was pretty hard to chew on, so preferred the captain crunch over it! I love the portion size of the dessert and was served with great service! The place also has outdoor seating that was nice with fountain!
google avatar

Michelle C.

Yelp
We just made it before it got busy. I got Cookie monster with Gummy Bears and Mochi - a scoop of heaven and brownie a la mode. Was not a huge fan of heaven as it had an over powering peanut butter taste but the other two were super good! There's no seating inside, only little kid chairs. So we enjoyed the water fountain outside. Yes, it was raining lol I would definitely be back!
google avatar

Aisha P.

Yelp
Super cute spot in willow glen! This place is super tasty and perfect for a hot day. They have tons of options to choose from ranging from ice cream to fro-yo, dole whip, milkshakes and more. The atmosphere outside is great but the seating tends to fill up quick especially during the weekends. There is also often a decently long line since it is just about 1-2 people working. Today, I went with the pineapple dole whip and it was perfect for the hot summer heat! It was refreshing and both sweet and sour. Personally the 5oz cup is more than enough for me and it does tend to get pretty expensive as the smallest size is about $5.50 I believe. Regardless, if I find myself in the area and am craving some cold desserts I will definitely return!
google avatar

Christine B.

Yelp
This is my favorite ice cream shop. They have a wide variety of flavors. My favorites are the frozen yogurt flavors. They have a variety of sizes, cone options, and toppings. They also make shakes if you're looking for something different. There isn't anywhere inside to eat your ice cream. But there are lots of outdoor places for you to sit. It's the perfect stop after having dinner in downtown Willow Glen!
google avatar

Sudesna M.

Yelp
The one thing that stands out for Willow Glen creamery is the wide range of options to choose from. From frozen custard to yogurts to ice creams to gelatos to dole whips to milkshakes - there's something for everyone here. They don't have lots of indoor seating options but you can always sit at the fountain next door or the small tables set outside. It's one of my go to spots after lunch or dinner at Willow Glen downtown. My all time favorites include Pralines and cream and Dole Whip. Generous portion sizes and excellent customer service! Highly recommended!
google avatar

Timonatior F.

Yelp
The ice cream here is very good and the out side seating area is very relaxing with a nice water fountain in the middle of the court. Service was also good

Yelp
Having walked by Willow Glen Creamery a hundred times, yesterday was the day I finally went in. I immediately loved the mom & pop vibes, fun wall decor, and large flavor selection. While I was being indecisive, the guy at the counter gave my dog a little cup of frozen yogurt, which was so sweet of him. After trying a few flavors, I ended up getting the kids size cup of Burgundy Cherry and This Is Nuts. The cup I was given was wayyy larger than expected and I later realized it was a kids size cup inside of a much larger cup to catch ice cream overflow. Both flavors were delicious (especially the Burgundy Cherry) but it was more ice cream than I could possibly finish. My friends got the Exhausted Parent and Reese's Shake, which were both fantastic. We took a quick photo of the iconic "I got creamed in Willow Glen" neon sign and brought our ice cream outside to eat in the courtyard. The vibes were fantastic, as we sat on benches near the fountain and ate our ice cream, while listening to the live music across the street. Would totally return!
google avatar

Samantha F.

Yelp
Fantastic ice cream. Wayy pricey. It gets crowded super fast and can be quite claustrophobic. However, there is outdoor seating that is pleasant. It's difficult to manage toddlers, ordering and sitting as a single parent. Nevertheless, this is still my post-happy hollow go to for a treat.
google avatar

Jen-Jen B.

Yelp
Perfect place for them hot days/nights.. They have Dole whip?!?! Yasss!! Enough said..
google avatar

Yelp
Hidden GEM! They gave froyo for doggies for free!! All the small details like the color changing cup is such a wonderful touch!!! A GO TO FOR SURE!!
google avatar

Serena M.

Yelp
Yummy flavors and big scoops. Plus the location is perfect for an ice cream date and a walk around the block
google avatar

LeAza D.

Yelp
The employees are so nice. We didn't expect to see the 10-20 ice cream. Since we new of only one place having it. It's all the way in Santa Cruz. San Jose is so much closer. Glad we were able to eat our ice cream outside since it got busy.
google avatar

Christine N.

Yelp
Stopped by here because I was craving some ice cream and didn't want to go to baskin robbins that is just behind this place! Got myself a single of the s'mores and got a 7oz of pistachio and cookies and cream in a cup for my boyfriend. The ice cream here is not good at all. The texture is really creamy, almost like a custard and it wasn't "cold" like how ice cream should be... if you catch my drift. If you like this texture then sure you may like it. The pistachio flavor doesn't even taste like pistachio! It tastes like a light nutty flavor without any hint of pistachio flavor. Cookies and cream didn't taste as "cookie and cream" like as I thought. The worst pistachio and cookies and cream flavor ever! The cone I got was broken and I didn't realize it until I left unfortunately. I threw away at least half of my s'mores cone because I was really trying to get myself to like it. The cup I got for my boyfriend, he threw the whole thing away after eating one bite of each flavor. Super big let down and $12 down the trash... I don't get the hype and the long lines at all. I'll just stick to baskin robbins if I wanted ice cream in Willow Glen.
google avatar

Wan G.

Yelp
Although my ice cream was good. I am unsure about the covid precautions the staff take. I had to ask them not to touch their hair or face amd then serve. So no mask, hair nets, washing hands or sanitizer. They just reach inside start fixing ice cream. Hair nets should definitely be required.
google avatar

Sabrina J.

Yelp
First of all - excellent customer service! We came once, and they didn't have the cool pink waffle cone taco shells so my mom called, and the owner brought it back just because she asked about it. Also, they give a lot of scoops so it is definitely worth it. The pink waffle cone taco shell is so fun and visually appealing. I got the green tea ice cream and was a bit disappointed since you can barely taste the green tea. The banana nut was much better! The ice cream is not very cold though and melts quickly. Overall an enjoyable experience!

Yelp
Staff is super friendly. When I go in the evenings during the weekdays, it isn't packed so I get serviced fast. Very delicious ice cream.

Yelp
Every time I've been to Willow Glen, I would always see a long line outside of Willow Glen Creamery and many people sitting next to the fountain outside enjoying their ice cream. Although I'm personally more of a fan of innovative ice cream, nothing wrong with the classic sense done right. I stopped by with my roommate on a sunny Saturday afternoon, the perfect day for ice cream. We ran across the street after seeing that the line wasn't out the door, and did not have any time to read the full menu before someone came up to take our order. Usually I go for a fruity flavor, something refreshing, not so sugary, and in a pretty color. There were so many pretty colors to choose from! Plus I think there was a sign saying there were 18 more flavors not on display, so how can anyone make an informed decision? In cases like these, I wasn't shy about describing my general flavor profile and asking for a recommendation. Marble Black Raspberry: Reminded me a lot of the brambleberry crisp flavor from Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream at The Domain in Austin, TX. I'm personally a fan of fruity ice cream with vanilla just to get away from the sorbet selection, and I'd say this is a good flavor option if you're the same way. Cookie Dough: I'm personally not a fan of cookies and brownies in ice cream because I feel that it starts to get too sweet. This wasn't too bad when combined with the marble black raspberry but it would be on the sweeter side if consumed alone. I'd say the ice cream here is traditionally done right. If you're looking for authentic ice cream and not so much ice cream done differently, definitely give Willow Glen Creamery a shot. A huge selling point is the wide variety of topping options to choose from, which missed the mark for me because I'm not a cookies and candy toppings kind of person. If cookies, candy, and topping are exactly what you look for when it comes to ice cream, you won't be disappointed here.

Yelp
I truly have mixed feelings about this place. On the one hand, the ice cream and frozen yogurt are pretty good, but the customer service there is not always. I suppose it is because a) the Creamery is pretty much run by spoiled teenagers/young adults and b) it is a well-known fact that the Creamery is "the only show in town" in terms of offering sweets (the Willow Glen Sweet Shoppe is unfortunately permanently closed), so the owners and staff must think that they don't need to be customer oriented. Some examples of facts that can (and do) easily frustrate a customer are 1) incorrect information regarding hours of operation on Google and 2) the inconsistency regarding what flavors are their available "flavors of the day." I will probably only go back because, as mentioned above, it is the only place in the area currently providing what it does, but it will only be because it is/has been really hot out and what individual doesn't enjoy a cool refreshment on any given hot summer's day?
google avatar

Morgan B.

Yelp
Saturday afternoon in 85 degree weather called for yummy ice cream to keep me cool :) I came here ONLY to get my fix of mint chocolate chip iced cream. When I looked at the menu, I didn't see the flavor and my heart sank. I was about to turn away but a part of me felt like I should ask the server anyway. Low and behold she went to the back and carried out a fresh tub of my favorite flavor and I felt like a little kid in a candy store lol.
google avatar

Rox R.

Yelp
I was lured by the dole whip sign. It was meh! Nothing special. Not dole whip. I tried to make my own dole whip and this was about the same. Sorry. Maybe something else would have been spectacular but this wasn't. Skip.

Yelp
The best ice cream parlor in San Jose! We love coming here for their Marble Black Raspberry, it's delicious!! It's been our favorite since we discovered this place. The service was quick and the owner was so kind. We will definitely come back again.

Yelp
Love this cute little ice cream shop. They offer froyo as well as milkshakes and other similar items here too. Went with their maui waui sherbet today for a nice refreshing dessert in this hot weather. It was good! Classic fruity sherbet flavor that's a great balance between sweet and sour. As I kept eating I did find that the flavor became quite overwhelming and the sweetness also got to me. I find that this happens to me for most ice cream shops however, so nothing extremely disappointing. The seating areas around the shop are quite nice and relaxing but they tend to fill up quickly so you might find yourself standing around instead. Overall, solid ice cream shop but nothing particularly stood out. I would return again if I'm in the area for sure!

Yelp
I visited Willow Glen Creamery with my kids expecting a fun and family-friendly ice cream shop, but I was shocked and disgusted by the neon sign on the wall that says "You got creamed in Willow Glen". This is a vulgar and sexual innuendo that has no place in a kids ice cream place. It is disrespectful to the customers and the community of Willow Glen. I felt uncomfortable and embarrassed to explain to my kids what it meant. I will not be coming back to this place and I urge other parents to avoid it as well. This sign should be taken down immediately and the owners should apologize for their poor taste and judgment.
