15 Must-Try Astral Margaritas in Orange County | Eater

"Perched at the tip of Dana Point Harbor, Wind & Sea has been a fixture since 1972 — an impressive feat in a town where restaurants come and go. The space embraces coastal nostalgia with shiplap walls, nautical decor, and a patio overlooking the water. Order a watermelon margarita made with Astral Blanco and watch sea lions bob around the docks. Seafood staples like macadamia nut-crusted ahi and fish and chips round out the menu, but the real draw is the waterfront setting." - McConnell Quinn

I was disappointed. I went in for my birthday celebration dinner ( we notified them when we scheduled on Open Table where we asked for a window view). The booth was nice but not next to the windows. I ordered the poké appetizer which I enjoyed. They never brought my husbands bread that he ordered for his appetizer. I ordered grilled swordfish and Brian ordered chicken. The plates looked identical except for the proteins. Made it feel like an old folks home dinner plate with half of both plates filled with basic rice and 7 spears of boiled asparagus. We were never asked if we wanted more wine and no one ever even said Happy Birthday. Not exactly special.

Google
The food was good. Either the portion was small or it was so good that we ate them all! Good service. The view was fantastic, too! It’s a great way to spend time right after a whale watching trip.

Loved the Wind and Surf restaurant in Dana Point! The harbor views were beautiful, you can see seals swimming that you feel close to nature! The food was delicious too!

Google
Loved my experience at this beautiful place by the water. The food was fresh and delicious, our waitress was very helpful and personable, and the views were gorgeous! We were able to admire quite a few seals playing. We will return.

We went there with 2adults and 2kids. As soon as we stepped in, elegant hawaiian style beauty welcomed us and led us to table. We felt so welcome. Then server Zander came in no time. We ordered two kids menu, clam chowder, lobster tail, and hawaiian chicken. Zander didn't even write them down and managed to memorize all! He was very kind and he showed up quickly only when we wanted something. Just proper service i would want. I don't want to be bothered too much and still don't want to wait for too long time and he did a perfect job. Well, now let's talk about food. First of all, lobster tail did not have price tag so i thought it would be around 50$ (other menu mostly 20-30$ range). However, i realized it was $79 after i received a bill. Well, then considering the cost, i have to say something. It was a bit chewy.... Flavor was great though. Just kids refused to eat after chew it a bit. Clam chowder was great, and everyone liked it. I wish i ordered two. Mac&cheese was a bit chewy or hard but still, tasty. Hot dog was good. Chicken was very tasty but still a bit dry and chewy so failed to feed kids. Overall, flavor was great and very tasty, but i struggled to share our food to kids :( lobster price was way over my expectation but it is ok. It is lobster. My wife and i enjoyed eating anyway! ;)

Google
Waitstaff and food are excellent, with a fantastic view of Dana Point and there is always something to see in the harbor. Brand new parking garage with 4 hours free. Very nice for a date or group.

Google
I ordered the Swordfish. The rice had good flavor, the Asparagus was delicious, but the Swordfish was small and dry. I squeezed lemon on it, but it didn't help. Just dry. My waitress asked if I wanted a refill on my Coke, but brought back a Dr Pepper. For desert I ordered the Brownie....delicious and very filling. But, left unhappy.

Google
The food, service and atmosphere was amazing! Our server gave us her personal recommendations and why they were known for certain entrees. She was fun and attentive. Highly recommend for any occasion!

Yelp
While in Dana Point, we decided to have dinner here this past weekend. We always go to Harpoon Henry's, but it just closed permanently and this is their sister restaurant. The menu looks similar and almost same vibes. Started with clam chowder, sourdough loaf, then Mac Mahi Mahi. Seemed better at Harpoon last year. Cocktails were delish. Our server was Owen and he really took care of us. Would go back and try more items on the menu.

Yelp
Made reservations for 2 groups of 8 for dinner on a Saturday post half day PM fishing and we were hungry. Although all 16 of us couldn't talk during our meal, our tables were at least next to each other. Staff were nice and attentive, got our apps and mains in a timely manner. I personally got the clam chowder and ono which were both delicious. The fish was cooked perfectly. Our 2 birthday celebrants got comp mud pies which was nice. I had an espresso martini for dessert and i enjoyed it very much. The view of the sunset was amazing, we all had a wonderful time.

Yelp
This place was exactly the pit stop we were looking for. Just came here because we wanted to be close to the water and grab some appetizers and drinks. We sat right on the railing right next to the harbor which was perfect. We were here for happy hour (4-7 M-F), ordered sashimi, poke, and the coors and IPA for a total of $37. Poke was okay, wish the portion would've been more for it being $12 during happy hour, tad pricey. Sashimi same thing, would've loved to have more pieces or more on the pieces we got, but the fish was really tasty and the IPA was outstanding. Waitress was excellent and made sure everything was to our satisfaction several times during our time there.

Yelp
Wind and sea is a great spot for a special occasion or a lazy Saturday afternoon. My cheese burger was fantastic and a perfect medium rare. The clam chowder was good, but a little light on the clams. Our waiter, Cole, was funny and happy to please. The view is absolutely perfect, and it is also a great place to people watch. 4 stars because it's a bit over priced, and the meh clam chowder.

Yelp
Came here because of the view of the ocean. Parking was not too bad even though it looks tight. We were seated outside so we got a great view of the ocean. Calamari strip (4/5): Got this as an appetizer. It was breaded well and the squid was very tender and meaty. Although I prefer the non-strip version because it's easier to share, I really liked how much meat I was getting with this. Chowder (5/5): Very lovely and comforting. Plenty of seafood inside as well. Mahi-mahi macadamia (5/5): This was definitely the more unique dish on the menu. The macadamia provided some sweetness and crunch texture to the fish. Got it was asparagus and rice. I liked using the creamy mango sauce from the fish to the rice. Overall great place to dine if you want an ocean view

Yelp
Wind & Sea is a huge beautiful restaurant in the Dana point Harbor. The drinks are strong and the food portions are huge. I wanted to try the mud pie, but I didn't have any room after the nachos. Service was excellent.

Yelp
Our anniversary dinner was fabulous! Best lobster for my husband, and grilled salmon for me. We usually wind up with leftovers but not this time, we loved every bite and everything about our meal... cooked to perfection. Our young waiter Ryan, was an added bonus to our delightful experience. He was so attentive and polite, professional and friendly!! So nice to see a young man enjoying his job. The ambiance and views of the boats, seals and paddle boards going by were amazing. We plan to return much sooner than another anniversary! Thank you Wind & Sea !

Yelp
The food and drinks are so good!! I went to this place one day and I had to come back next day as well, delicious. Service was great, I had a guy that took care of me and he was so sweet because I was going to the wine cruise and I was kind of in a rush but he really helped me to be out on time, the ambience is wonderful!!

Yelp
Great food, great service, and simply amazing views! We had a lovely impromptu dinner at Wind and Sea. We were heading back to San Diego from LA and took a pit stop here. The day was lovely and we wanted to take advantage of the beautiful sunshine. We couldn't have been happier with our decision! We got a table right at the window with an amazing view across the harbor. We were there for seafood and the options were a plenty. Cod fish and chips, stuffed Ono, macadamia crusted Mahi, and multiple salmon offerings. We went with the fish and chips (children's portion), Ono, and Mahi. All were quite different and all were delicious. My favorite was the crusted Mahi with the sweet chive plum glaze. The standard fish and chips with homemade tartar was a close second. Cocktails didn't disappoint either. I'd highly recommend Wind and Sea when you have a hankering for seafood!

Yelp
I love the Wind and Sea. Our family has come here for many decades. The interior is now dated, I fear for the restaurant's future. It needs a remodel. The location, however, is ideal. The views are incredible, best in the harbor. You can eat inside or outside and there is a bar area. They have an upstairs for private events as well. The food is very good, the menu is mostly seafood. Last time we were here, I had the scallops, which were really amazing. The sauce was perfect, the scallops cooked just right. The mud pie was also tasty and really big. We shared it. The only take away was that the restaurant is so large and most of it was roped off, as if it doesn't get used. Felt like we were eating in a half-used house.

Yelp
We came here after a whale watching boat tour! The drinks were spot on! And our food was delicious! I would def recommend! The weather was perfect! So being outside by the water was a must! I had the Hawaiian pineapple chicken sandwich! With CRISS CUT FRIES!! Get these!! They are a must! Drink of choice: Key Lime Pie Martini (SOOO GOOD! Just as good as the one I had in Key West, FL)

Yelp
Good views out on the harbor. Honestly, food was just ok. Service was excellent, friendly folks.

Yelp
With reservations, we were quickly seated . We ordered Sandwiches, steak, fish everything was delicious .All staff was very friendly and attentive. Atmosphere and scenery was amazing and very picturesque. It's located pretty much on the water and next to a marina. If you get a table by the window, you can see seals swimming by and boats going to and from the marina. Nice place but really hard to find a parking.
google avatar

Yelp
The service was spectacular, the food very good, the ambiance was dated. Enjoyed a bottle of 12 highways red blend, and ceviche in addition to dinner.
google avatar

Yelp
It was a day, the patio was the place to be . The waitress was friendly with all the answers and a smile . The menu is laid out nicely. I had the tuna sandwich with fries. The food came out quickly. The sandwich was a nice size and had just the right amount of tuna on it. The tuna had a nice flavor.

Yelp
Came here for a nice dinner with the family since we were in the area and it was incredible. Breathtaking view, food was delicious, dessert was yummy and the service was awesome. Definitely recommend.

Benjamin A.

Yelp
So this is a beautiful place to eat. The prices are very good. Most of our food was excellent. The crab cakes were so amazing, the swordfish super tasty, but the stuffed Ono on the special menu was not the best. Completely overcooked to the point it was like leather. Now the stuffing was great along with everything else on the plate, so just don't get the stuffed Ono and I think you'll be fine. Also we had the mid pie and enjoyed it.
google avatar

Yelp
Service was phenomenal and the food was amazing. Highly recommend the fish and chips!
google avatar

Yelp
I had no issues. Living in Seattle, moving to Phoenix we crave good fresh seafood. You have to have the Clam Chowder. I can not remember the last time I had a chowder so good, great view and service was perfect.

Chanthra D.

Yelp
The scallop dish was very salty, and the fried fish and chips could use better flavor. Other than that, great view and experience.

Yelp
Jill (Jillian) was a fantastic server! So patient and sweet...she is quite a gem here. We have been coming here for decades...the food, the drinks, the view & the service continues to be amazing. Thank you Jill! We will look for you when we come back!!
google avatar

K.G. F.

Yelp
Bland, bland, bland. Super disappointing, and will never be back. Hostess, waitstaff and food: all of it was indifferent. Eight dollars for a tiny loaf of sourdough bread? Small portions with no flavor. Waitress checked back once. Just pick somewhere else!
google avatar

Yelp
Best happy hour in Dana point. Everything on the happy hour menu is very good and very good value. The football specials on Monday and Thursday are different and a great deal, and the normal happy hour is served throughout the game. Outdoor seating is great during the daytime, indoor by the bar is great during the game.

Yelp
We went for my birthday to the Wind & Sea restaurant. Its has beautiful scenery and delicious food. Our server Sydne was spectacular in so many ways! I had a wonderful birthday dinner!
google avatar

Terri F.

Yelp
Food is consistently yummy, reasonable and the service above and beyond. This is a FAVORITE place to go - great atmosphere, too! We hope the harbor "update" doesn't steal it from us or force them to raise prices!!

Katie G.

Yelp
First of all, our hostess and server were wonderful. But that's about all the positive I can mention. The Mai Tais we ordered were insipid and the clam chowder we were so looking forward to was nothing but a thick, gloppy, gluey tasteless mess as well as a very meager portion for the price. We may give it another try in the future. Hopefully things will have improved by then.

Yelp
This is an American Hawaiian restaurant. It's located on the end of the pier at Dana Point Harbor. The interior uses logs and open spaces to create a Hawaiian style. The staff is enthusiastic. The waiters wear an aloha attire and the waitresses wear a plumeria alba worn in the hair. It feels like you're at a Hawaiian resort and is very relaxed. We had the grilled chicken club, the Hawaiian chicken sandwich, a warm chocolate brownie dessert, and four drinks. Great grilled chicken club with excellent service. If you're short on time, you should at least stay for a drink. We highly recommend the cocktails. They are impeccable. We ordered the non-alcoholic Lava flow twice.

Yelp
After boosting the economy of this quaint little harbor, we needed drinks and appetizers. Decided on Wind and Sea because of the location. But did we get a lot more than that! Our server McKenna was fabulous! Great recommendations, quick service, and delightful personality. Drinks were generous, nachos the best. No one hurried us, we were able to sit , laugh and relax. Great view too! A perfect place to to meet and enjoy! Thank you McKenna for making it great!
google avatar

Yelp
Been to Wind & Sea a few times and the experience had always been great! Food are always worth it and the view is of course very nice given you are eating next to the marina. The servers and hosts are all very nice and accommodating. The last time we went, we had a large party (15+ people with about half of us being below the age of 12) . They took us in without a problem, but to be fair, it's for a Monday brunch around Christmas time. I have also been here for their Sunday buffet and that had always been a worthy place to drive to for a delicious Sunday brunch. We love Wind & Sea and we will definitely come back here for another get together with family and friends, as well as to get our Loco Moco from their Sunday brunch buffet !
google avatar

Barb S.

Yelp
Great outside seating. Hubby had the guacamole and chips which was delicious. I had the seafood Cobb salad, super yummy!
google avatar

Jane S.

Yelp
I came in with my family on Sunday afternoon and we had a wonderful time! The view is spectacular! Hostess got us sat right away. Food was outstanding, my whole family enjoyed. We sat on the patio and our waitress name was Jillian and she made our experience what it was. She was so kind, attentive, and respectful of our dietary needs. We will definitely be back. Thank you Wind & Sea!

John G.

Yelp
Worst clam chowder I've ever had. Gloppy, gluey and basically tasteless. Hard to make something this easy and basic so poorly. Service was good.
google avatar

Yelp
Starting with a positive, the harbor view from the patio is nice with open air. Indoor dining is not nearly as nice. The rest of the experience... starting with hostesses, they couldn't care less if you're greeted in a friendly manner. Hiring high schoolers to be the face of your business is an interesting choice. Server was friendly but not particularly memorable. Cocktails here are absolutely terrible...none of their cocktails appear to be made by a trained bartender. Even their mai tai is plain bad. Food is adequate but overpriced for what they're serving. This is one of the best oceanfront views but what a disappointment beyond this.

Heather B.

Yelp
Our favorite spot that we go to a few times a month. Service is impeccable! Makena & Elena are the best! By far the best Mai Tai you'll ever have! Beautiful harbor views! And the food is delicious! The calamari is the best you'll ever have! Outside patio is a must on a beautiful California day!
google avatar

Liz N.

Yelp
I was pretty disappointed by the service from the get go. The hostesses were disorganized and sat a group that came after my group even though our groups were the same size. The wait went from, what we were told, 15 minutes to over 30. The veggie burger was pretty good but not amazing. My sister-in-law ordered a steak medium well (?) but it came out like a dry piece of cardboard. When she asked our server, the server insisted that my sister-in-law was wrong! But then, upon checking the order, realized her mistake. This experience wasn't the greatest, but I wasn't the happiest knowing the people in my group were irked. Also, the tables were very sticky. Nonetheless, I loved the view AND the garlic bread!!! Both so tasty! I would return again because I know it can be really good but this may have just been an off day.

Yelp
Monday, 01/20/2025 Dana Point Harbor Wind and Sea (Sea food) I'm spending a date brunch with my hubby at Wind and Sea in Dana Point today. The restaurant has a lively atmosphere, but the food can be hit-or-miss and the hostesses can be unfriendly. Overall, it's a pleasant experience that depends on the day. Today is a hit! Our waitress name Bree, she's a bit quiet but sweet and professional. They have two sections, dining area and the bar area. We usually like the bar area sitting by the window with a beautiful view of the Harbor watching yachts, sail boats and people paddle boarding My husband ordered the Charbroiled Salmon -Lemon Herb Butter, Garlic Mashed Potatoes, and Asparagus He likes his Salmon cooked more done and he said it was cooked to perfection for him today! Yayyy I ordered Big Eye Tuna Poke -Avocado, Cucumber, fried Wonton chips, sweet Chili, wasabi Aioli Both of our entrees were delicious! I recommend this local hangout
google avatar

Johnny S.

Yelp
Our server was such a blessing, really energetic and fun. Nice and professional. I got the Ono, with a side of garlic herb-butter and the fish was absolutely delicious, really loved everything. However, I did get the calamari strips, and it was good but seemed like it was just an average grocery frozen item. Everything else was delicious though!

Yelp
They have rude and untrained staff and employees that they do not know how to treat and talk to Customer, unfortunately... They ruined our day on my daughter's birthday. They had empty-seated but they forced people to stand outside. I wanted to be seated inside but they said we would be open for the dining area 20 min later please be seated in the balcony area. As long as my daughter and I were seated on one of the empty tables a teenage girl came and kicked us out and didn't consider the receptionist told us to come and sit in that area. My daughter got mad at her birthday she asked to go home and no more dining tonight. They must train their staff before hiring them.

Ryan T.

Yelp
i've never had a bad experience here. Food has always been tasty. The service has always been great and the ambience as the restaurant is beautiful with a great view pretty much wherever you sit.
google avatar

Daph H.

Yelp
You go to the Wind & Sea for the harbor views, not the food. It's pretty pricey considering how mediocre the food is. It's the sort of restaurant that would have given you bread or a roll for free back in the day but now charges you $8 for a sourdough loaf. Our server was very cheery, which kind of made up for the unfriendly hostesses at the front. My fish was basic. It reminded me of a recipe that used mayonnaise as a sauce on top. At least they added some microgreens to class it up. It came with some rice and some sautéed veg. At least the views out the window were nice and made me feel like I was on vacation. If you're looking for good food, go somewhere else. However, if you're looking to eat by the water, there's Wind & Sea.
google avatar

Cathrine S.

Yelp
It gave sleepy beach town meets retirement home.. Wind & Sea is a historic restaurant, the newspaper clippings in the front lobby stated it opened back in 1972 and has continued running under the same owner to this day. There are also a few other locations including one in Hawaii. (I've been to this location as well and was much more impressed with their layout and ambiance) If you're looking for harbor view dining, this could be it. The restaurant has an older vibe, with tables and booths that have likely been the same since they opened. They have model sailboats hanging from the ceiling and a few more subtle Hawaiian touches including florals and wall paintings. The quality of their food and menu options were just okay, nothing extraordinary, which isn't a bad thing. There is something to be said about a simple menu, it offered something for everyone. We tried the guacamole and salsa, the texture of the salsa was quite watery leading me to feel as though it was once frozen and then thawed to be served. I enjoyed my spinach salad with tuna salad on top, however the raspberry dressing did not impress. I'm glad I gave it a shot but do not see myself returning anytime soon.

Yelp
Once again, when DC did not disappoint The food was fresh and plentiful Service was excellent The evening was beautiful

Julie G.

Yelp
Locals love wind & sea! They have a great happy hour deal and the best mai tais. Amazing harbor views inside and on the outdoor patio. Highly recommend the scallops off the dinner menu.
google avatar

MaDonna W.

Yelp
We love this local restaurant so much... We have so many gorgeous days with sunshine, looking into the harbor We came in around 430. Unfortunately, the dining room was closed so we sat outside, it was a birthday, so we really wanted to be on the inside in the dining room. Nice and cozy Everyone at the front desk was so kind and so sweet. They actually sat in the dining room 15 minutes early, which was just beautiful for our dinner party of six The salads are delicious. The hamburgers are so good I love their salmon. We just love the atmosphere, and the staff is always so friendly and so kind they even went out of their way and played it up all of our birthday dessert. There is always plenty of parking here and it's very dog friendly.
google avatar

Louella C.

Yelp
I have been going to Wind and Sea for years. I stopped going about 5 years ago because I found their menu to be overpriced . So today I took my friend for a leisurely lunch. I have the stuffed ono. The fish was dry and lacked flavor. My friend had fish and chips. It was good. Our lunch was over $100 Including ice cream sandwich . Service by Denise was impeccable!

Yelp
Atmosphere and scenery was amazing and very picturesque. It's located pretty much on the water and next to a marina. If you get a table by the window, you can see seals swimming by and boats going to and from the marina. The service was good and the food was ok. We had the Calamari appetizer. It was a bit overcooked and on the rubbery side. If you've been to a Maggiano's, and had their Calamari, then these won't even measure up to them!! You can easily get better Calamari elsewhere. The fish and chips were good with light on batter (so well executed). We ordered the Key lime pie and crembruilee. The key lime pie was excellent! However, the crembruilee was overcooked and on the gritty side -- so, I can't recommend it unfortunately. Overall the place was ok.

Christina G.

Yelp
I'm honestly surprised by all the negative reviews -- I had an incredible experience here! We sat on the patio, which had a great atmosphere, and the service was excellent. As someone who's very particular about food, I was hesitant to try this place at first, but I'm so glad I did. Everything we ordered was delicious. The poke nachos were a 10/10 with unbelievably fresh fish, the oysters were great, the steak medallions were perfectly tender, and the seared ahi was delish. The vibes were spot on, and our waitress was warm, kind, and super attentive. Will definitely be returning.

Yelp
Came with a large party before the dinner rush and were seated right away. Sophia was taking care of us and she was absolutely amazing. Drinks kept coming and the food all came out hot. She got nothing wrong!!! It's a cute beachside restaurant (we sat outside) right next to the harbor. Inside is really nice too and the bathrooms were clean. This is a perfect place to enjoy a romantic dinner and see the sunset! Parking is free for 4 hours. I got the steak with extra mashed potatoes and my husband got the kalua pork nachos which were HUGE! The sourdough bread is hot and soft. I could tell everyone was loving their food too. I immediately regretted not getting the ahi because it looked SO delicious. Oh well, an excuse to come back soon!
