15 Must-Try Astral Margaritas in Orange County | Eater

"Perched at the tip of Dana Point Harbor, Wind & Sea has been a fixture since 1972 — an impressive feat in a town where restaurants come and go. The space embraces coastal nostalgia with shiplap walls, nautical decor, and a patio overlooking the water. Order a watermelon margarita made with Astral Blanco and watch sea lions bob around the docks. Seafood staples like macadamia nut-crusted ahi and fish and chips round out the menu, but the real draw is the waterfront setting." - McConnell Quinn

I ordered the Swordfish. The rice had good flavor, the Asparagus was delicious, but the Swordfish was small and dry. I squeezed lemon on it, but it didn't help. Just dry. My waitress asked if I wanted a refill on my Coke, but brought back a Dr Pepper. For desert I ordered the Brownie....delicious and very filling. But, left unhappy.

I was expecting to have to wait long because we just happened to be here on Mother's day but we didn't have to wait long at all and got a spot right by the water. We tried the fish and chips and ceviche. The fish and chips were one of the best I have ever tried. The breading was crunchy and the fish was very moist. Our waiter also did a great job. I would definitely recommend this place.

We had such an incredible experience at Wind and Sea celebrating my birthday dinner. The food was fresh and delicious! The views were … WOW exceptional and seeing all the people relaxing in their boats as the sunset sets. 10/10 experience

Google
Delicious seafood and beautiful views at Wind & Sea! We started with the calamari strips and nachos grande. For entrees we had the mahi mahi, seared ahi tuna, and swordfish. Everything tasted great and the food comes out quickly. The service was excellent, very friendly and helpful. They have a dog friendly outdoor patio. Plenty of table sizes to accommodate parties of any size. Recommend!

I came in the other night with no expectations for the wind & sea. I really wanted to go to Jon’s but it had closed so wandered over here and I was soooo impressed with the meal. staff was nice view is nice but the food is downright delicious. The walnut crusted salmon is crusted in love and delicious goodness. I literally cleared my whole plate it was fantastic. Service could’ve been better , but it seems like my server probably went fishing and caught the salmon after I ordered because of how tender and fresh it tasted. So I guess if he did go catch the salmon himself then the service is perfect 🙂

The food was good and the views were great! The hostess staff is world class!

A beautiful day in our neighborhood sun shining and just a small breeze not hot cold just wonderful weather so we took ourselves down to Wind and Sea at the harbor in Dana Point. Checking in was easy there is a disabled sidewalk on the side of the restaurant for people in wheelchair or walkers we had a lovely table by the window, watching the boat go by in the ocean, watching the seals float by in the ocean, it was lovely. Our service was fabulous and our menu was full of special treats. We ordered the seafood bisque which is delightful and we ordered a plate of calamari my favorite and we ordered a dish to share that was shrimp and asparagus with rice and absolutely delicious. No room for dessert as we were full, but they have superb dessert which I’ve eaten before especially their chocolate mousse cake with ice cream, coffee vanilla chocolate whatever you like. Parking, 🅿️ of course, is easy except on Saturday we went on Saturday evening Saturday afternoon really at 2:30 so people were just finishing up. it was between lunch and dinner so it was very pleasant in the restaurant after we left the restaurant. We sat out at the harbor for a while just breathing the fresh air And watching the people walk by was a lovely day in our neighborhood. come to Dans Point. It has wonderful restaurants and activities for all. Just say LENORE sent you and enjoy.

Fun place on the Dana Point Pier area. The artichoke was amazing. The salmon is very good as well. Fancy place, but we didn't feel uncomfortable dressing casual.

Yelp
I came in with my family on Sunday afternoon and we had a wonderful time! The view is spectacular! Hostess got us sat right away. Food was outstanding, my whole family enjoyed. We sat on the patio and our waitress name was Jillian and she made our experience what it was. She was so kind, attentive, and respectful of our dietary needs. We will definitely be back. Thank you Wind & Sea!

Esther C.

Yelp
The food and views was good and our waitress was so amazing his name I think was Jered we totally comeback for his attention, was amazing with my kids and making sure they have a great experience. Thank you.

Yelp
Wind and Sea has gotten better over the years. Anything less than 5 starts is a joke. All the dishes are superb.

Yelp
This place was exactly the pit stop we were looking for. Just came here because we wanted to be close to the water and grab some appetizers and drinks. We sat right on the railing right next to the harbor which was perfect. We were here for happy hour (4-7 M-F), ordered sashimi, poke, and the coors and IPA for a total of $37. Poke was okay, wish the portion would've been more for it being $12 during happy hour, tad pricey. Sashimi same thing, would've loved to have more pieces or more on the pieces we got, but the fish was really tasty and the IPA was outstanding. Waitress was excellent and made sure everything was to our satisfaction several times during our time there.

Yelp
Starting with a positive, the harbor view from the patio is nice with open air. Indoor dining is not nearly as nice. The rest of the experience... starting with hostesses, they couldn't care less if you're greeted in a friendly manner. Hiring high schoolers to be the face of your business is an interesting choice. Server was friendly but not particularly memorable. Cocktails here are absolutely terrible...none of their cocktails appear to be made by a trained bartender. Even their mai tai is plain bad. Food is adequate but overpriced for what they're serving. This is one of the best oceanfront views but what a disappointment beyond this.
google avatar

Yelp
Came here because of the view of the ocean. Parking was not too bad even though it looks tight. We were seated outside so we got a great view of the ocean. Calamari strip (4/5): Got this as an appetizer. It was breaded well and the squid was very tender and meaty. Although I prefer the non-strip version because it's easier to share, I really liked how much meat I was getting with this. Chowder (5/5): Very lovely and comforting. Plenty of seafood inside as well. Mahi-mahi macadamia (5/5): This was definitely the more unique dish on the menu. The macadamia provided some sweetness and crunch texture to the fish. Got it was asparagus and rice. I liked using the creamy mango sauce from the fish to the rice. Overall great place to dine if you want an ocean view

Yelp
Wind & Sea is a huge beautiful restaurant in the Dana point Harbor. The drinks are strong and the food portions are huge. I wanted to try the mud pie, but I didn't have any room after the nachos. Service was excellent.

Yelp
Wind and sea is a great spot for a special occasion or a lazy Saturday afternoon. My cheese burger was fantastic and a perfect medium rare. The clam chowder was good, but a little light on the clams. Our waiter, Cole, was funny and happy to please. The view is absolutely perfect, and it is also a great place to people watch. 4 stars because it's a bit over priced, and the meh clam chowder.

Yelp
Great food, great service, and simply amazing views! We had a lovely impromptu dinner at Wind and Sea. We were heading back to San Diego from LA and took a pit stop here. The day was lovely and we wanted to take advantage of the beautiful sunshine. We couldn't have been happier with our decision! We got a table right at the window with an amazing view across the harbor. We were there for seafood and the options were a plenty. Cod fish and chips, stuffed Ono, macadamia crusted Mahi, and multiple salmon offerings. We went with the fish and chips (children's portion), Ono, and Mahi. All were quite different and all were delicious. My favorite was the crusted Mahi with the sweet chive plum glaze. The standard fish and chips with homemade tartar was a close second. Cocktails didn't disappoint either. I'd highly recommend Wind and Sea when you have a hankering for seafood!

Yelp
I love the Wind and Sea. Our family has come here for many decades. The interior is now dated, I fear for the restaurant's future. It needs a remodel. The location, however, is ideal. The views are incredible, best in the harbor. You can eat inside or outside and there is a bar area. They have an upstairs for private events as well. The food is very good, the menu is mostly seafood. Last time we were here, I had the scallops, which were really amazing. The sauce was perfect, the scallops cooked just right. The mud pie was also tasty and really big. We shared it. The only take away was that the restaurant is so large and most of it was roped off, as if it doesn't get used. Felt like we were eating in a half-used house.

Yelp
i've never had a bad experience here. Food has always been tasty. The service has always been great and the ambience as the restaurant is beautiful with a great view pretty much wherever you sit.

Yelp
Jill (Jillian) was a fantastic server! So patient and sweet...she is quite a gem here. We have been coming here for decades...the food, the drinks, the view & the service continues to be amazing. Thank you Jill! We will look for you when we come back!!

Yelp
With reservations, we were quickly seated . We ordered Sandwiches, steak, fish everything was delicious .All staff was very friendly and attentive. Atmosphere and scenery was amazing and very picturesque. It's located pretty much on the water and next to a marina. If you get a table by the window, you can see seals swimming by and boats going to and from the marina. Nice place but really hard to find a parking.

Yelp
I had no issues. Living in Seattle, moving to Phoenix we crave good fresh seafood. You have to have the Clam Chowder. I can not remember the last time I had a chowder so good, great view and service was perfect.
google avatar

Cassandra A.

Yelp
The service was spectacular, the food very good, the ambiance was dated. Enjoyed a bottle of 12 highways red blend, and ceviche in addition to dinner.
google avatar

Yelp
It was a day, the patio was the place to be . The waitress was friendly with all the answers and a smile . The menu is laid out nicely. I had the tuna sandwich with fries. The food came out quickly. The sandwich was a nice size and had just the right amount of tuna on it. The tuna had a nice flavor.

Yelp
Best happy hour in Dana point. Everything on the happy hour menu is very good and very good value. The football specials on Monday and Thursday are different and a great deal, and the normal happy hour is served throughout the game. Outdoor seating is great during the daytime, indoor by the bar is great during the game.

Patricia H.

Yelp
Honestly, we like to come here to just enjoy the view and sit outdoors. The food is good but I wouldn't say amazing and you can expect to pay a hefty price. We had the ceviche for starters which was generously packed with avocado. I ordered the Ahi Tuna for my main meal which came with rice and a spicy sauce. The Tuna was fresh but the spicy sauce was more tangy than spicy. Overall good! Rating 3.5

Yelp
This is an American Hawaiian restaurant. It's located on the end of the pier at Dana Point Harbor. The interior uses logs and open spaces to create a Hawaiian style. The staff is enthusiastic. The waiters wear an aloha attire and the waitresses wear a plumeria alba worn in the hair. It feels like you're at a Hawaiian resort and is very relaxed. We had the grilled chicken club, the Hawaiian chicken sandwich, a warm chocolate brownie dessert, and four drinks. Great grilled chicken club with excellent service. If you're short on time, you should at least stay for a drink. We highly recommend the cocktails. They are impeccable. We ordered the non-alcoholic Lava flow twice.

Yelp
After boosting the economy of this quaint little harbor, we needed drinks and appetizers. Decided on Wind and Sea because of the location. But did we get a lot more than that! Our server McKenna was fabulous! Great recommendations, quick service, and delightful personality. Drinks were generous, nachos the best. No one hurried us, we were able to sit , laugh and relax. Great view too! A perfect place to to meet and enjoy! Thank you McKenna for making it great!

Yelp
Been to Wind & Sea a few times and the experience had always been great! Food are always worth it and the view is of course very nice given you are eating next to the marina. The servers and hosts are all very nice and accommodating. The last time we went, we had a large party (15+ people with about half of us being below the age of 12) . They took us in without a problem, but to be fair, it's for a Monday brunch around Christmas time. I have also been here for their Sunday buffet and that had always been a worthy place to drive to for a delicious Sunday brunch. We love Wind & Sea and we will definitely come back here for another get together with family and friends, as well as to get our Loco Moco from their Sunday brunch buffet !

Yelp
Once again, when DC did not disappoint The food was fresh and plentiful Service was excellent The evening was beautiful

Yelp
I was pretty disappointed by the service from the get go. The hostesses were disorganized and sat a group that came after my group even though our groups were the same size. The wait went from, what we were told, 15 minutes to over 30. The veggie burger was pretty good but not amazing. My sister-in-law ordered a steak medium well (?) but it came out like a dry piece of cardboard. When she asked our server, the server insisted that my sister-in-law was wrong! But then, upon checking the order, realized her mistake. This experience wasn't the greatest, but I wasn't the happiest knowing the people in my group were irked. Also, the tables were very sticky. Nonetheless, I loved the view AND the garlic bread!!! Both so tasty! I would return again because I know it can be really good but this may have just been an off day.
google avatar

Johnny S.

Yelp
Our server was such a blessing, really energetic and fun. Nice and professional. I got the Ono, with a side of garlic herb-butter and the fish was absolutely delicious, really loved everything. However, I did get the calamari strips, and it was good but seemed like it was just an average grocery frozen item. Everything else was delicious though!

Yelp
They have rude and untrained staff and employees that they do not know how to treat and talk to Customer, unfortunately... They ruined our day on my daughter's birthday. They had empty-seated but they forced people to stand outside. I wanted to be seated inside but they said we would be open for the dining area 20 min later please be seated in the balcony area. As long as my daughter and I were seated on one of the empty tables a teenage girl came and kicked us out and didn't consider the receptionist told us to come and sit in that area. My daughter got mad at her birthday she asked to go home and no more dining tonight. They must train their staff before hiring them.

Christina G.

Yelp
I'm honestly surprised by all the negative reviews -- I had an incredible experience here! We sat on the patio, which had a great atmosphere, and the service was excellent. As someone who's very particular about food, I was hesitant to try this place at first, but I'm so glad I did. Everything we ordered was delicious. The poke nachos were a 10/10 with unbelievably fresh fish, the oysters were great, the steak medallions were perfectly tender, and the seared ahi was delish. The vibes were spot on, and our waitress was warm, kind, and super attentive. Will definitely be returning.

Yelp
This place is all about the location. It has a nice patio which is why we booked a reservation. Apparently reservations are for inside so we had to go to a different hostess. Said we would get a seat near the water. Stuck us in the middle on a hard bench. Not comfortable and ruined dinner. Ordered swordfish blackened. Worst I ever had. Dry fish with little taste. Fish and chips were ok and oysters were good. Maybe for a casual lunch but never again. I don't recommend for food maybe drinks.

Jersey R.

Yelp
If I could give zero stars, I would. I've been to Wind & Sea before and always enjoyed the view -- but after this last visit, I'm never going back. The managers were shockingly rude and completely unprofessional. One of them even seemed drunk -- slurring their words, stumbling around, and acting like it was happy hour for them, not the guests. What really disgusted me was how they treated their own team. I saw a manager speak down to employees like they were beneath them -- eye-rolling, barking orders, and making a scene right in the middle of service. It was uncomfortable to witness, and honestly ruined the vibe of the night. The only reason I'm even giving one star is because the busboys, servers and food runners were genuinely kind and respectful. They were working hard under pressure and clearly doing their best in a toxic environment. Shoutout to them -- they deserve way better. This place seriously needs new leadership. Until that happens, I won't be back. Pretty views don't make up for bad management and an unprofessional atmosphere.

Yelp
Monday, 01/20/2025 Dana Point Harbor Wind and Sea (Sea food) I'm spending a date brunch with my hubby at Wind and Sea in Dana Point today. The restaurant has a lively atmosphere, but the food can be hit-or-miss and the hostesses can be unfriendly. Overall, it's a pleasant experience that depends on the day. Today is a hit! Our waitress name Bree, she's a bit quiet but sweet and professional. They have two sections, dining area and the bar area. We usually like the bar area sitting by the window with a beautiful view of the Harbor watching yachts, sail boats and people paddle boarding My husband ordered the Charbroiled Salmon -Lemon Herb Butter, Garlic Mashed Potatoes, and Asparagus He likes his Salmon cooked more done and he said it was cooked to perfection for him today! Yayyy I ordered Big Eye Tuna Poke -Avocado, Cucumber, fried Wonton chips, sweet Chili, wasabi Aioli Both of our entrees were delicious! I recommend this local hangout

Yelp
You go to the Wind & Sea for the harbor views, not the food. It's pretty pricey considering how mediocre the food is. It's the sort of restaurant that would have given you bread or a roll for free back in the day but now charges you $8 for a sourdough loaf. Our server was very cheery, which kind of made up for the unfriendly hostesses at the front. My fish was basic. It reminded me of a recipe that used mayonnaise as a sauce on top. At least they added some microgreens to class it up. It came with some rice and some sautéed veg. At least the views out the window were nice and made me feel like I was on vacation. If you're looking for good food, go somewhere else. However, if you're looking to eat by the water, there's Wind & Sea.
google avatar

Cathrine S.

Yelp
It gave sleepy beach town meets retirement home.. Wind & Sea is a historic restaurant, the newspaper clippings in the front lobby stated it opened back in 1972 and has continued running under the same owner to this day. There are also a few other locations including one in Hawaii. (I've been to this location as well and was much more impressed with their layout and ambiance) If you're looking for harbor view dining, this could be it. The restaurant has an older vibe, with tables and booths that have likely been the same since they opened. They have model sailboats hanging from the ceiling and a few more subtle Hawaiian touches including florals and wall paintings. The quality of their food and menu options were just okay, nothing extraordinary, which isn't a bad thing. There is something to be said about a simple menu, it offered something for everyone. We tried the guacamole and salsa, the texture of the salsa was quite watery leading me to feel as though it was once frozen and then thawed to be served. I enjoyed my spinach salad with tuna salad on top, however the raspberry dressing did not impress. I'm glad I gave it a shot but do not see myself returning anytime soon.

David G.

Yelp
We love going to happy hour at Wind & Sea...still unclear what happens to them during the harbor construction or if they will return. We hope so!
google avatar

Louella C.

Yelp
I have been going to Wind and Sea for years. I stopped going about 5 years ago because I found their menu to be overpriced . So today I took my friend for a leisurely lunch. I have the stuffed ono. The fish was dry and lacked flavor. My friend had fish and chips. It was good. Our lunch was over $100 Including ice cream sandwich . Service by Denise was impeccable!

Yelp
Awesome food awesome service. If you're lucky to be seated in Denise's section she is the best with a beautiful smile. '

Yelp
We love this local restaurant so much... We have so many gorgeous days with sunshine, looking into the harbor We came in around 430. Unfortunately, the dining room was closed so we sat outside, it was a birthday, so we really wanted to be on the inside in the dining room. Nice and cozy Everyone at the front desk was so kind and so sweet. They actually sat in the dining room 15 minutes early, which was just beautiful for our dinner party of six The salads are delicious. The hamburgers are so good I love their salmon. We just love the atmosphere, and the staff is always so friendly and so kind they even went out of their way and played it up all of our birthday dessert. There is always plenty of parking here and it's very dog friendly.

Karen W.

Yelp
I love this place. First time here. It combines good coastal cuisine with nice ocean views. We can dine while overlooking the shimmering water.
google avatar

Kimi F.

Yelp
I will never come to Wind and Sea again. First the restaurant looks outdated and old. Second the Margerita I ordered tasted so sour and overly sweetened (definitely not fresh). My daughter ordered the sliders on the kids menu and the burger buns crumbled in her hands while eating. I ordered the Big eye Poke appetizer and wish I hadn't . It was so bland flavor wise and the two sauces they served with it didn't taste good and were pure salt. Bummer such a beautiful location on the harbor has to be this poor quality and too expensive.
google avatar

Yelp
Atmosphere and scenery was amazing and very picturesque. It's located pretty much on the water and next to a marina. If you get a table by the window, you can see seals swimming by and boats going to and from the marina. The service was good and the food was ok. We had the Calamari appetizer. It was a bit overcooked and on the rubbery side. If you've been to a Maggiano's, and had their Calamari, then these won't even measure up to them!! You can easily get better Calamari elsewhere. The fish and chips were good with light on batter (so well executed). We ordered the Key lime pie and crembruilee. The key lime pie was excellent! However, the crembruilee was overcooked and on the gritty side -- so, I can't recommend it unfortunately. Overall the place was ok.

Yelp
Came with a large party before the dinner rush and were seated right away. Sophia was taking care of us and she was absolutely amazing. Drinks kept coming and the food all came out hot. She got nothing wrong!!! It's a cute beachside restaurant (we sat outside) right next to the harbor. Inside is really nice too and the bathrooms were clean. This is a perfect place to enjoy a romantic dinner and see the sunset! Parking is free for 4 hours. I got the steak with extra mashed potatoes and my husband got the kalua pork nachos which were HUGE! The sourdough bread is hot and soft. I could tell everyone was loving their food too. I immediately regretted not getting the ahi because it looked SO delicious. Oh well, an excuse to come back soon!

Yelp
TIME FOR A QUICKIE. Had to throw this up immediately. When the food is as good or better than the photo looks... Shrimp Cocktail, fresh. Grilled Hawaiian Chicken Sandwich. Toasted buns, light mayo, side of freshly make coleslaw light mayo. Outstanding folks. Great service at the bar - Thanks Jimmy! Views from the bar overlook Dana Point Harbor, with tons of outdoor seating dockside. Great lunch spot.

Rex S.

Yelp
Service was fantastic, Food and dessert were excellent, Sweet views, and the ambiance was perfect.

Yelp
Popped into Wind and Sea to mix a bit of business with lunch and a drink. The down fall was the Guest WiFi wasn't functioning. The staff mentioned this happend a LOT. From my own invedtigation I could see the bar access point was not connecting to the Router. I put down to the fact that W&S are using Cisco Meraki seurity software, good move to stop hackers aka bad actors. Now what the IT person should have done is flip to page 5 of the install manual and set up a guest account. So I had to leave, probably would have spent north of $50. Now if there 3 more of me/week leaving because of the WiFi problem, W&S lose $2600/year, how much does the IT person lose?

Yelp
A Dana point institution and restaurant, been coming here for over 20 years. Great views of the harbor, fresh catch menu and great cocktails!! Service and servers are always friendly and attentive

Michélina M.

Yelp
The restaurant has a very nice view of the boats and the water. Very pleasant environment. The hostesses and our waitress were very professional and friendly. We had a very good time with my family. As far as the food is concerned, the fish and chips were good, the Hawaiian chicken pleased my guest and the scallop dish was good but nothing to talk about. The mignon steak however was very disappointing: a tiny piece of meat, not particularly tender, a spoon of potato puree and two miserable asparagus... Nothing creative, no artistry whatsoever and certainly not worth $49. I don't mind paying more for the beautiful location, but at least step up your game in the kitchen!

Yelp
So I had gone here on a date night approximately 4 months ago. The guy I was on the date with raved about how this was a great restaurant , was the "it" spot back in the day, etc. That alone should've been my red flag because this guy did not have a good track record of picking yummy food spots. Nevertheless, I followed along. The location is pretty as it's right on the water, I'll give that. However, upon walking up to the restaurant, we walked through the patio and I was looking at people's food (I'm curious, nosey, call it what you will!) and was not impressed with what I saw. Jack in the box looked better than this. Again, I still went along. Upon entering Wind and Sea, it is dimly lit and gives old, rundown casino vibes to me. Walking up to check in for a table, I observed that it was a bunch of high school girls working as the hostess' and they didn't greet us for a solid 4-5 minutes. Instead they stood idly by, gossiping and giggling amongst one another. Just as I was about to tell my date let's go, we got attention on us and were seated. Drinks: I ordered a margarita and he ordered wine. His wine he said was good, makes sense it was from a winery. My margarita however? Oh my lanta! It tasted like I licked the top of Mr.Clean, I couldn't drink it. Furthermore, it wasn't just me, the gentleman I was at the establishment with had tried it too and his eyes nearly popped out his head with how bad it was. Food: we ordered calamari to start and to be honest, I feigned not being really that hungry because looking at the food around me, I again was not impressed. The calamari came out and it looked like a piece of focaccia bread and it apparently tasted like fishy rubber. I can't account for the taste of it as I was so off put by my drink, staff, and the completely outdated atmosphere, I didn't dare try it. We left, I found a delicious spot nearby for us to eat at that I still think about. Never, ever will I return here and I wouldn't recommend this spot to even my worst enemy. The guy and i still joke about the horrendous experience we had here and he is completely mortified at having taken me here. So fellas, I wouldn't suggest this as a spot for a date.

Yelp
Not pictured: the INCREDIBLE piña coladas! We had a party of 7 and our waitress was helpful with menu advice and rounds of drinks. I tried the salmon and as someone new to salmon, i was pleasantly surprised! The filet was beautifully cooked and the SAUCE! YUM! One thing is i wish the veggies were a little more flavorful /a little hotter but by the time i ate all my meat and potatoes, who even needs vegetables! Would go back! Great view of the ocean.
