National Parks Are Reopened. Here’s Where to Go to Avoid the Crowds | Eater

"A South Dakota park where the subterranean attractions are famed for rare boxwork and delicate frostwork formations, though the cave tours may be closed; aboveground, about 30,000 acres of prairie, rolling hills, and wildflower meadows offer peaceful hikes and excellent wildlife viewing for bison, prairie dogs, elk, and the rare black-footed ferret." - Matt Kirouac

Support National Parks!! Along with highly informational cave tours there are numerous trails and scenic overlooks for independent adventure and discovery. Be aware of prairie dog crossing along the route, the park is filled with them along with Bison and other amazing critters. In the lower level of the visitor's center is an interactive museum that is filled with fun facts about the area and all of its intricate ecosystems.

This is a very underrated park. First of all, the cave tour was amazing. Our guide was friendly and informative. Then, the wildlife was great. There were bison and prairie dogs everywhere. So cute! Definitely worth a visit.

Amazing cave to visit. I did the fairway tour and it was very cool we visited all three layers of the cave and got to learn lots of the history. The tour guide was very nice and helpful, she was very informative and all of the “stories “ she told were very interesting. All in all I think it is definitely worth it to take a tour through the cave.

Loved the drive to wind cave and the park is a great place to see wildlife along the road. Saw more bison here than on the loop drive. Didn't even do the cave and was able to spend all day free with the view and trails. Definitely walk to the natural entrance of the cave and feel the cold air that comes through

Very interesting Native American sacred place. The trails and roads are one of the best in USA to see wildlife far from crowds. The caves are not as charming as the Jewel Cave NP, but still the guided tour is a good experience. The campground is peaceful, clean and packed with wildlife.

Underrated park. The Natural entrance cave tour was really cool (advice, try to get in after the park ranger to hear the information). The outside of the park has bison and prairie dogs. You can see most of them on the road that goes to Custer State park.

In August 2025, we visited Wind Cave National Park in the Southwestern part of South Dakota. We did the Natural Entrance Tour of Wind Cave, and we thoroughly enjoyed hiking through the narrow cave spaces. Ranger Jacob was great to guide us, and he is highly knowledgeable about geology, history, and National Parks. Wind Cave is different than Mammoth Cave or Carlsbad Caverns, as the Wind Cave geologic formations are different and there is not much water; nevertheless, it is still an amazing cave system to visit. The Visitor's Center has many clever and colorful displays and exhibits. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Wind Cave National Park in South Dakota, and we have many pleasant memories of our experiences there. We highly recommend the Natural Entrance Tour at Wind Cave National Park.

Beautiful views and wildlife! There are several hikes that you can do above ground, and ranger led tours for the cave system. You can purchase tickets for the tours online or in person at their visitor center! They have designated times for tours for each cave that vary in difficulty (mostly due to more stairs within the cave), and they do have accommodations for people with disabilities! While we were here we saw MANY prairie dogs, bison, and antelope!
