The 13 Best Spas and Retreats in the United Kingdom

"Best for: splendid isolation When this hotel opened over 30 years ago, it was that rare thing in the Lake District: somewhere to stay that was all about indulgence – sophisticated interiors, big pillowy beds, memorable food. Until then, visitors made do with damp slate cottages and packed lunches because the whole point about the Lake District was that you came to scale its handsome fells and leap from rock to rock across its thundering waterfalls. The Jetty Spa at the Lake House, then, is a rarer thing still: a place that celebrates the great indoors. It is designed, quite beautifully, for two, and the idea is that you disconnect from the world and reconnect with each other. Therapists create a blend of aromatherapy oils to your taste: muse over black pepper and mandarin, frangipani and ylang-ylang. While these are mixed, off you pootle through the gardens to the swimming pool, which is bathtub-hot and yours alone, along with a sauna.  Then to the spa itself, a Scandi-style wooden cabin, cantilevered over the shore of Gilpin Lake. The treatment room doors can be opened out to the water, so you can gaze past your feet at the moorhens flipping bottom-up as an adept therapist works away tension from your head. Afterwards, in the tiny boathouse, there are furry throws to burrow under, more lake views and an afternoon-tea stand piled with sandwiches and cakes. Address: Gilpin Hotel and Lake House, Crook Road, Windermere, the Lake DistrictPrice: Suites at the Lake House cost from £485 per room per night, with breakfast included. The Jetty Spa Trail, exclusive to Lake House guests, costs from £300 per couple. "This is outdoor**-** swimming heaven, with invigorating temperatures and stunning views. Windermere is the undisputed king, but the wild swimmer is spoilt for choice in the Lake District - why not also take a dip in Lake Buttermere?"

Very beautiful place to go alone or with the a family. Depends on the weather it looks peaceful or dramatic. But incredible anyway! We took a cruise and could enjoy wild nature too.

Drove around Windermere yesterday and had a visit to the lake, pretty busy with water sports on the lake, but peaceful and enjoyable, nice time to chill and take some stunning photos of the Children. We had a fab time and the little rain that hit us never put us off..

One of the most beautiful places in the UK, and I highly recommend it, especially during the summer! The views are absolutely breathtaking, with so many scenic spots to explore. One of the highlights is the unique park, filled with fun and engaging activities for all ages. Whether you're looking for relaxation or adventure, this place has something for everyone—it's truly a hidden gem!

Heavily populated with tourists (even during the quieter time in September when school holidays are over) therefore everything is expensive (50p card transaction to take a pee!) car park at the ‘museum’ a mare as pay on exit with a silly pricing method. Gift shops are over priced as you might expect. Putting all that aside the history (Beatrix Potter, Wordsworth, Wainwright etc) is fabulous and the views, the lakes and the walks are truly fabulous (lucky to have tremendous weather during our stay)

It's absolutely stunning. Beautiful. Orrest viewpoint was a particular highlight. For some reason, all toilets are 50p and not free. Considering how wealthy a lot of their residents are, it feels the council should review their upper tax bracket for these toilets to be covered. We did everything to avoid the charge.

One of the most magnificent places I have ever visited in my life. The nature seems to be untouched by human. Nevertheless, lack of toilets and garbage bins is a very big disadvantage. Recommend this place to everyone to visit. The road to the lake is very narrow and dangerous, so be careful.
