5 Restaurants We’ve Always Wondered About - London - The Infatuation

"Nobody, and we mean absolutely nobody, has gotten away with driving towards Brent Cross without pointing at Wing Yip’s magnificent, ornate palatial structure and announcing to the car, “I want to go there”. The Chinese supermarket is a London landmark and the restaurant (and indeed offices) attached to it are no different. Should you decide to turn off the A5 and enter the faux-bamboo fever dream, you’ll be rewarded with a classic, old-school Cantonese set-up. Big round tables. Grandparents and grandchildren sharing cheung fun. A Westlife greatest hits album on loop. It’s not the greatest dim sum in town, but it’s pretty decent. If you’re stocking up your cupboards and freezer next door, then lunch at Wing Tai is a must." - jake missing, heidi lauth beasley

Wing Tai Restaurant - Review - Cricklewood - London - The Infatuation

"Just off a buzzing stretch of the A5 in Cricklewood is Wing Tai. It’s a truly unique London institution. Where else in the world can you sit in a huge pseudo-temple and eat dim sum while a soundtrack that exclusively consists of Westlife plays in the background? Who knew Westlife even had that many songs? Quantity over quality is the name of the game at this sprawling Cantonese restaurant. The peking duck comes on its own king-sized bed of prawn crackers, the big round tables are packed out with several generations, and you could feasibly spend half an hour reading the menu. The food ranges from serviceable (the aforementioned glistening quack) to the bad (sloppy shao mai). Keep expectations for a fantastic meal low and instead, settle for a very good time. The setting is fun and it’s a proper scene, albeit one that’s more spinning lazy susans and toasting bottles of Tsingtao than an all-out party. photo credit: Heidi Lauth Beasley video credit: Heidi Lauth Beasley Pause Unmute Food Rundown Deep Fried Doughnut Cheung Fun There’s a whole host of cheung fun available at Wing Tai and unlike the lacklustre roast pork version, these dedicated crunchers are worth an order. The fried dough is crispy, the dough is silky smooth, and together they’re a satisfying mouthful. photo credit: Heidi Lauth Beasley Steamed Shanghai Dumplings It would take an eviction notice for the warming, salty soup to leave these dumplings. Or, a very firm bite. The skin is extra thick, arguably too thick. photo credit: Heidi Lauth Beasley Chef Special Peking Roast Duck This is by no means London’s best peking duck, but the skin is lovely and bar a couple of moments of gristle, the tender meat is too. Also, the accompanying hoi sin is extra sweet and makes for fun dipping with the freebie bed of prawn crackers. photo credit: Heidi Lauth Beasley" - Heidi Lauth Beasley

Google
Terrific Cantonese restaurant with all the classic dishes, we had 5 dishes here tonight and we loved it all! The Salt Baked Cornfed Chicken was excellent and the Stuffed Tofu/Aubergine/Green Peppers too. The Mixed Meat Crispy Mein was great, and the Crispy Squid in Chillies n Salt. Service from staff very friendly... a very recommended restaurant

Google
Good - Very quick service, turnaround of tables even when queuing outside - generous portion sizes - couple of vegan options, the tofu Lo Han noodles - Food was solid, in particular the honey duck. - reasonably priced for dishes Bad - food was decent but depending on options as some were a mixed big / more average than others - can be quite loud inside restaurant/ close to other tables - Better signage of vegetarian dishes please

Its ok…. Went for yum cha on a Sunday, great that there was no queue and got a table straight away. Tea is served - note that tea is a per person charge, even though it’s the same teapot with no refill of the tea leaves - just hot water. ordered from the dim sum menu, food arrived quickly. Less a star as we had also ordered a stick rice dish that never arrived and when asked they had not entered it the system. The best food for us was the deep fried spring roll and sui mai. The rest were imo average or ever below, so we were quite disappointed as we had high hopes. Having said that it’s super convenient to do your Asian grocery shopping as it’s next to WingYip and there is plentiful parking. There is also another cafe/restaurant inside WinYip call reindeer cafe.

Google
An authentic Cantonese restaurant in North West London that serves Dim Sum. There are enough park spots. The food is tasty and authentic, just tastes like it in Hong Kong and Guangdong. We paid £108 for 3 adults and 2 children, we got a very full tummy after.

This is a very big restaurant and the atmosphere is very friendly and pleasant. It's a relaxing place to have Chinese food. The only thing is that you need to know what to order. Some dishes, such as roast duck, egg plant, sweet and sour ribs, and beef dishes, were very good, but some other dishes we had were not good.

Convenient place for dim sum lunch in North London without having to travel into central London. The restaurant is in the same building as wing yip supermarket with a large underground car park. If you plan to have lunch on a Sunday then you should arrive at 11am when it opens. If you arrive at 12, then you are likely to have to wait a while for a table. We have not visited this restaurant for a while, they seem to have had a recruitment drive. There are plenty of waiting staff all very hard working and tentative. They are quick to remove plates that are empty, check the tea pot to ensure it has water and top it up regularly. Service was excellent, there is always someone available and we did not have to wait long for anything. Food was very nice and tasty. Portion size is good. We had a nice meal. Would definitely return.

Google
Pros: Food is very tasty. Good service. Cons: seats with wooden back, which hurts the backs of seniors. Music was in English, not Chinese.

We went for dim sum, didn't have to wait long even though it was very busy. It is understandable that the service had to drop due to the fullness of the restaurant. Food was lovely, a bit more expensive than China Town.

Yelp
The restaurant is open and located in Northwest London, Cricklewood. I have been a long standing patron of this business and the food is delicious. I also shop next door in the supermarket where they sell a variety of food products including live and fresh seafood. I recommend this restaurant to everyone although it might perhaps be hard to reach if your travel requirements are restricted. A great choice of restaurant to use if you are shopping in and around the Staple Corner's area.

Yelp
Typical Cantonese Chinese restaurant used mainly by the Chinese community in North London. All the usual dim sum is available, and my favorites amongst them. It always makes sense to go in a large group if you can as there are so many dishes to try, these small bite sized pieces, the Cantonese calls "dim sum" meaning "touch the heart", but even if there is two of you and you over order, you can take a doggy bag home! I always love the deep fried steamed chicken's feet or claws in black bean sauce. It's sounds awful, but the taste is awesome! My other favourite is the steamed Lai Wong Bao /Custard Buns. Love these steamed, hot, delicate buns, fluffy and soft inside, and full of sweet custard goodness! They really hit the spot! NB: Dim sum is typically only available for lunch, so get there early to enjoy!

Yelp
This restaurant has a hygiene problem. It is one of the worst 20 restaurants for hygiene in Brent: http://www.kilburntimes.co.uk/news/revealed_the_20_food_premises_in_brent_with_a_hygiene_rating_of_zero_1_4477015 Large Cantonese restaurant in the Wing Yip complex with all the classics such as Roast Duck and Char Siu. The restaurant was taken over by new managers in 2017. However, the hygiene ratings by Brent council still show the the restaurant is poorly run.

Yelp
This place is totally nuts on weekends! It seems like every Chinese person in London comes here! I came here once on a Sunday, gave up, and then came back two hours later, and I still couldn't get a table. After waiting 30 min we left and I think you might have to go early on a weekend to get a table. The waiting system is also a bit crazy. The first time we went, we didn't know that the huge crowd waiting there was part of a system. Apparently, if you just hang around, eventually an old man will show up and you can ask him for a ticket with a number on it. We found this out the second time we came, and somehow managed to find the correct old man and get a number. During the 30 min we waited though, we heard numbers being called in no particular order, so I don't know if this system really works. So onto the review, I have actually eaten here, on a weekend when I showed up at a really random time and it was mostly empty. This is the place for dim sum, and I really enjoyed the prawn cheung fan the most. The steamed prawn dumplings were okay. Most of the dim sum contains pork, so my options were very limited. We also ordered some main dishes as our dim sum options were limited. The Singapore noodles were average and the sizzling beef quality was not great. I would just come back for the cheung fun, which is really enjoyed!

Yelp
This is one of my comfort food places in London. Dim sum really hits the spot! My husband and I are Chinese and the food is pretty authentic. If you are looking for something fancy or are a vegan don't come to this place! If you want mega tasty dim sum with minimal fuss this is for you! The service is pretty typical for China, brusque and matter of fact. This place gets REALLY busy on weekends around lunchtime so be prepared for a queue (you get a number and they all out numbers when a table is ready). If you have a small group and go around 11 AM its fine but don't go around lunch if you have a large party. Once you are seated you get a PICTURE menu (hooray!) and you mark down how many of each you want (most orders come with 3 pieces) and the food comes out pretty quickly but in a random order. Everything I have tried is tasty! I can't comment on the order from the menu food as I never get it though. Also check out the asian supermarket next door for some great stuff you can't usually get at most supermarkets. Happy eating!

Yelp
We had dinner there after being recommended by a friend. I have to say we were disappointed, food was good but not wow, very overpriced, rice was cold, plates were badly represented. Staff very rude, never smiling or welcoming, bad English, they couldn't answer the simplest questions about the ingredients of their food. I still would go there again though, cause I really like the noodles and satays.

Yelp
Solid dim sum available here, not the best in the world but never disappoints. Service is the usual abrupt (but not rude) service. Mark your own slip of paper for what you want to order and hand it to the waiter. Weekends are super busy so be prepared to wait, make sure you grab a number from the woman with the megaphone and wait for your number like the lottery to get a table.
