Wes Whitsell Brings a Taste of Texas to Winston House, the Waterfront  - Eater LA

"Opened in 2021, this moody supper club offers a small but focused red sauce menu inspired by Texan-Italian cuisine. Dishes include wafer-thin pizzas, manicotti with venison ragu, pimento cheese arancini, cornmeal fried oysters, and smoked brisket agnolotti. The venue also features live music and a variety of beverages." - Cathy Chaplin

Winston House Opens as an Upscale Supper Club With Live Music in Venice Beach - Eater LA

"The team behind the Waterfront is opening an intimate supper club to Venice Beach called Winston House starting tomorrow evening, July 29, with owners Corey McGuire and Jake Mathews bringing in Andy Vaughan (Soho House Malibu and Buddakan NYC) to help manage the upscale restaurant and live music venue. McGuire will curate musical guests and has worked with the likes of Billie Eilish, A$AP Ferg, Janelle Monaé, Ed Sheeran, and Justin Bieber in the past. The executive chef is Jared Dowling, who previously designed menus at Habitas resorts, and was the executive chef of Fat Radish in New York City, a popular British restaurant that focused on vegetables and only closed last year after a decade-long run." - Matthew Kang

Google
Thoroughly enjoyed my pizza. Ordered the 'Jake' pizza with no cheese-- substitute mushrooms. It was delicious! Everyone working was so sweet. Shout out to Meghan, Zoey, Cory, Sunny, Henry, and Rob for exceptional and friendly interactions and service! I will definitely return to try some more menu items.

Google
A pretty solid looking menu, though we only tried a couple of things. My wife and I tried the steak which is hard to totally screw up. They have a good drink menu with some inventive options too. The service was pretty pleasant to us and the space is interesting to look at with a side music hall right next to the dining room. Be careful about the top shelf liquor, they tend overcharge for it. We had two apps and the steak for two. However, with 4 drinks it was almost $300. Even Rose Cafe isn’t that much and the food at Rose is at least 3x better. Thinking hard about whether to give it another shot. (1.5 years later - re-editing this review, we haven’t been back given how many other great options Venice has like Ospi, American Beauty, Scopa, and on and on)

Where do I begin… I LOVE this place. It’s easily the best spot in Los Angeles for drinks, dinner and dancing. Their new artist showcases each week are always great. It’s a such a fun atmosphere to meet new people. Also, the Winston house team is a shining example of nightlife hospitality. Leeann is so incredible at her job and goes the extra mile for her guests. Next time you go try the Winston Shirley. Sonny at the bar makes the best one! Whenever I go to Winston House, I know I’m going to have a great time!

Google
I wish I knew how the food was, but it got confusing to order food during the concert. Anyway, beautiful lobby and main bar. I enjoyed my time there.

Google
Terrible. Drinks are all cocktail mix. They hand you a bill that is not itemized… and only allow a 25% tip… when I asked to change it, she rolled her eyes. It was so embarrassing. Do not recommend! PS CHECK YOUR BILL! They sneak a 4.5% fee!! And it has no details for what it’s for! Trust me, pick a different place for your birthday!!!

Google
Speakeasy shows were so awesome! Jessie Chambers and Jade Patteri are powerhouses, such fun shows! William, the drummer for Jade is fantastic!

Google
The Winston House is one of the best venues in LA. Their food is delicious, the live bands are talented, and the DJs are phenomenal. All in a lively but also intimate setting. If you're looking for a top notch LA night out this is my #1 recommendation.

Tucker Tyree

Google
Charged $15 to get in. There was a band that was fantastic, but went off after one song. Then a dj came on... my girlfriend, who is from Pennsylvania, asked if they weren't allowed to play copyrighted music in California because of how bad the music was. Honestly more sad than anything. Could've been cool if they hired a competent music curator.

Yelp
My sister & aunt took me to Mama's Boy @ Winston House at Venice Beach for my birthday. The food, service & ambiance were great & so was the DJ. I was thinking I should ask him to play something by Prince. Before I knew it he started playing Pink Cashmere by Prince

Yelp
Review is for Mama's Boy at Winston House.  LOVED: -The DJ.  -The Old school club / American Italian restaurant Vibe -Sweet wait staff -11 Black Eyed Pea Hummus with pickled vegetable -Bolognese with angel hair (not on the menu) Not So much: -The fried oysters were overly breaded and over cooked. I miss my mama's oyster!! -Smoked Brisket Agnolotti - Too much going on -Ultra thin and crispy pizza, made with Tehachapi grain Sonora wheat - Not good ratio of crust to the toppings. Top heavy if you know what I mean. I hope they update the menu on their website. Also, they don't give you a paper receipt. Our server brought us the payment device to pay. If I did not check, I was about to pay for a different table. It was actually much lower priced bill but I like to know what I am paying even after having a few bottles of wine. When I asked our server about the 4.5% fee, she said she had no idea. I found out it was for "health and wellness". The server should a least know what the bill represent.

Yelp
Went here for literally 15 minutes on Friday night and my friends phone was pick pocketed, my other friends keys / wallet were stolen, and my wallet was taken right from my purse. Security did not help us at all. Very sketchy and I wish I never went. Don't go here.
google avatar

Yelp
Such a hidden gem for live music! We went to Winston House during their Out the Blue event to see Jake Scott and Josie Dunne. We had such an amazing time! The venue is small, but that's one of the best things about it. The performances become more fun, relaxed, and genuine. They also do have a bar which is really nice. I hope they keep bringing more artists to perform!

Natalie R.

Yelp
Winston House has phone and wallet thefts on a regular basis. They know about it, and yet they do nothing and say nothing. It's terrible. To make matters worse, I filed a police report as that was the only thing they tile to do, and I was never contact by the Venice police. I tracked my phone and left messages as to the whereabouts of my phone (now in China BTW) and the police never responded nor returned a call. I know it's JUST a phone, but it's an expensive phone, and the bar should reimburse us. They KNOW this is an issue yet said nothing to me as I entered their establishment. Winston House - do better!

Yelp
Have only been late night, they charge a cover but usually have very good music and a fun energy! Lots of dancing and it gets very hot inside so be prepared to be sweaty.

Yelp
I came here with a couple of girlfriends for a girls night out. So glad we did! We started out with drinks and a few appetizers. My favorite was the stuffed mushrooms. So creamy and flavorful! Then we moved on to dinner. We got a pasta, a pizza and a main dish. The pasta was amazing and had a nice kick to it. The bass was flavorful and lemony. The pizza was not my favorite, but that's OK because what came next was the best thing ever. We decided to get the strawberry shortcake based on the waiters suggestion and we are so glad we did. It was literally the best dessert I've ever had!

Jordan W.

Yelp
Review is for Mama's Boy at Winston House. I had pretty high expectations for the food considering the chef but was a little disappointed. The fried oysters were overly breaded and lacked much flavor. Pimento cheese arancini was good but not a wow. Ricotta ravioli was also good but again, not a lot of flavor. Server was nice but not super knowledgeable.
google avatar

Brooke B.

Yelp
Fun atmosphere, drinks were good! Staff were very kind also. Great place to party with some friends!
google avatar

Anna T.

Yelp
Love this place! The vibe is awesome, dimly lit, cool mirrors. Great music! Service was fast. Our martinis were served in the oddest glasses, they were little shot glasses. The star of the night was the cheese balls. The truffle flavor is amazing! The dumplings and ravioli was also great. A bummer was we had a plate of chicken nuggets barely touched and the waitress took them away when clearing some of our table. Great way to start your night out!

Yelp
Do not eat here. This is a bar and a fun bar, but the food is not good and not a reason to come here. I won't go on and on about how the food isn't good, but I could- just eat somewhere else and come here to hang out and have drinks.

Sara P.

Yelp
I love a good dinner out and don't have any problem paying more for good food and a good experience but this restaurant left little to be desired. The food was meh at best and the fact that we were charged $3 extra for a dirty martini to be "dirtier" is ridiculous. I've ordered martinis in tons of restaurants...much nicer than this, and I've never heard of being up charged for a dirty martini. Many better restaurants in LA and on the west side than this where you get way more and tastier food for your money
google avatar

Yelp
My friends and I went out to Winston House on a Friday night, and the line was about an hour but crawling at a glacial pace. Cover is $12/person; drinks were pretty standard $14-20 ish. The venue itself looked classy with moody lighting and 2 bars, but we weren't feeling the music at all. Barely anyone was dancing, so we finally left to go to the place across the street after about an hour.

Yelp
This review is for Mama's Boy, Winston House's brand new high-end restaurant. We had an incredible experience, food was next level, delicious and creative and everything was absolutely on point. Extremely fresh and flavorful produce made the veggie dishes burst with flavor, and the meat, seafood, and pasta were all amazing, and artfully prepared. Cocktails and desserts were also top-notch, and service was warm and attentive. Vibe is like an elegant supper club so great place to come for dinner & drinks before a big night out, or to serve as the big night out by itself. Definitely will be back, and will bring more friends!

Bryan F.

Yelp
Mama's boy had terrible service! I would not recommend eating at the restaurant. They kept taking food and drinks off my table before we could finish our plates. From someone who eats at 100+ restaurants a year, I can honestly say this was by far the worst experience all year. Avoid at all costs. If I could give zero, I would.
google avatar

Doug L.

Yelp
What a small quaint feel with the lighting and music, all with some tasty food. What's not to love. The cheese balls were delicious among other things. We live nearby but never knew this existed. Will definitely be back. The line to get in can be slow but definitely worth it. If you're looking for a mental get away this place definitely does it.

Yelp
Winston House on a Saturday night is a crowd! The venue is small, though, so there's not too much dance floor space to begin with. Despite previous reviews, I have found the staff to be polite and professional. The general admit/non-VIP line gets let inside at 10pm; we were ready for this and were the first in line at 9:45. After ID check, bag check, and general body scanned, we were inside by 10:03pm. Drinks are just OK and on the pricier side. I paid $16 for a rum and coke incl. tip, and $22 for a whiskey sour incl. tip. House band is decent. Jazzy-ish vibe on 2010's and older popular tracks. Interior is pretty and a bit retro. For me, visiting once was nice for the experience.

Yelp
I live in marina but I just found out about this place last summer... I love the food everything is so delicious, love the vibe, they don't have known popular brand of wine or tequila but the wine they have are pretty good. I had dinner downstairs this time on Friday night but the music was a little too loud when I try to have a conversation, the place got so packed when we were finishing up our dinner and still so many people outside trying to get in... Definitely the hot spot in Venice with great food!
google avatar

Rod P.

Yelp
Good music, smells like piss and urine all over the inside. Live music is always a plus except for when the room smells like a sorority girls room after she neglects her cat all weekend by going home
google avatar

Kristella P.

Yelp
New hit spot for amazing music & great atmosphere! They have dinner that is actually the best bar food ever - definitely get the fried cheese balls with truffle aoli and duck tacos. The music was so good. I recommend booking a table to ensure you get in & eating dinner then Enjoy the night dancing away!

Becca C.

Yelp
Do not recommend! About 20 people's phones were stolen in a matter of 20 minutes and the management wouldn't do ANYTHING

Yelp
Came here recently for a b-day celebration. The venue itself isn't the largest space but it wasn't bad, the service and the food was really good. I had a drink with cherried bell pepper that was unexpectedly delicious. My only qualm was the entertainment. Based on what the person that invited me said, the whole gimmick/excitement is that you don't know who's going to be performing until they perform. Fine. After a while they musicians started to show up, and it seemed like they came with a whole orchestra...then they started playing. As a lover of music, I was disappointed because it sounded like they asked 9 random dudes off the street if they knew how to play "Dancing Queen" on an instrument then asked if they wanted to get on a stage. And they played it on repeat while pouring shots out of a bottle into everyone's mouth and a few people's on the dance floor. Ratchetness. They visibly weren't on the same page with the songs. I'm sure LA is full of up-and-coming artist that would've loved the opportunity, but whatever. Good thing the DJ is coming soon...right? Wrong. Very lackluster. Even so, I would go back for the cheese balls.

Tom L.

Yelp
Just had a wonderful dinner experience at Mama's Boy, the new restaurant in Winston House. We tried several dishes and every one was excellent- delicious, fresh, flavorful, creative, and fun. It's hard to pick favorites, but the Smoked Brisket Agnolotti, Peaches & Burrata, Ribeye Cap, and Strawberries and Cream were fantastic. The setting is cool and relaxed, service is excellent, and the DJ played super hip instrumental music that really added to the experience. Can't wait to go back with more friends!

Lena P.

Yelp
Disgusting food! I got poisoned!!! I had a crazy stomach ache and was throwing up after their food and oysters! My husband's stomach was not okay after eating them either! I think it was the oysters that weren't good because I tasted them, they were bad..
google avatar

Justin A.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, amazing venue. Fairly pricey Recommended: duck tacos, lobster fried rice
google avatar

Robyn H.

Yelp
I can honestly say I've never been to a place like this. I had heard great things about it from a friend who lives in the area. The inside of this place was awesome. It almost felt like a time capsule that takes you to a real jazz bar. The band plays current songs but with a jazz twist. I will say it was very crowded but that's to be expected since the place isn't super big. We did not eat there but all the drinks I had were great!! 10/10 recommend a must visit. I would definitely make sure you get a reservation before 10pm though!

Milan A.

Yelp
Amazing service, fire ambiance, and the food is great! Highly recommend the Arancini! Marvin is the goat

Yelp
Went for dinner and drinks at Winston House on Saturday night. A splashy lounge and restaurant with live music and dancing. Quality: Winston House is what I think of when I think of LA. A swanky hot spot that offers cocktails and small bites. The dining rooms slowly converts to a club space as the night goes on. A live band played jazz versions of popular songs, and each nook of the space was made for Instagram photos. Quantity: Mostly small bites. Value: $14-$19 for Cocktails. $12 for Cheese Balls. $16 for Chicken Nuggets. Ambiance: Winston House is a chic restaurant and lounge located off Venice Beach. Located in part of hostel, they have several different areas. The front provides a dining room and bar, the main room shifts from dining area to dance floor, and the upstairs is semi-private tables. Crowd: Get a reservation early, there was a long line down the block when we left to get in. Service: Good service both when a sit-down restaurant and as a bar. Parking: Tough street parking.

Yelp
Came here on a random Thursday for Stagecoach at Winston. Our waitress, Summer was super sweet and accommodating. Order the duck tacos and cheese balls. Doesn't disappoint!
google avatar

Yas E.

Yelp
Went here with a group of friends on Saturday night! The food was good but not excellent. I liked this place anyways because the vibe and music. There's very few places in LA that you can eat good food while being in an atmosphere where you can dance at your table. We sat upstairs and it got pretty packed with people hanging out at the bar. We danced a little at our table then went downstairs and danced a little more. The music is great and different between the 2 floors. For dinner we got the little gem salad, caviar, crudite, duck tacos, burger and steak. Nothing was fantastic but if I wanted a fun night out I would definitely come back even if it was just for drinks.

Yelp
Good to see the rating dropping down to the appropriate levels. I visited a couple weeks ago when the rating was sitting at a 4.5 and couldn't believe it. The food is mediocre at best. Tried the Shrimp Toast, which truly terrible, Oysters, small but fine, Spicy Noodles, best bang for your buck but mostly average. Had an Old Fashioned as well that was way oversweet. Why put pineapple in a whiskey drink? Why? Highlight was seeing a potential first date of two 45+ casuals turn into an otp handy and mad dash to escape for freak stuff. Interested to see what the music scene is like, but not getting my hopes up. This place has all the feels of a Venice place that knows it will be packed every night if they're hit the right mix on the pretentiousness scale. Basically James Beach 2.0.

Yelp
Had a reservation at 630p - checking in was easy and quick. We had our vax records in our Apple Wallet and went in without an issue! Food here was excellent for the most part! To start, we got the Cheese Balls, Shrimp Toast Royale, Chicken Nuggets, and the Duck Tacos. Out of all those, the only one that was meh was the Chicken Nuggets, but everything else was great, especially the shrimp toast, which was my favorite out of the appetizers. If you're a fan of Peking duck, then the duck tacos should be very familiar, and the Cheese balls were these gooey cheesy fried goodness. For the mains, we went the pasta route with Spaghetti Bolognese and the Ravoili. Out of the two I definitely prefer the bolognese - hearty and flavor's great. Really wanted the Mighty Duck but portion wise would've been too much for us since we wanted to try more items from the menu. For dessert we got the donut and that was not great unfortunately. Drinks are all great. I had their version of Old Fashioned and it's bit on the sweet side, but it's very good and very strong. I also had bartender make me a Boulevardier and that was one of the best I've had anywhere. If you get the chance, order the drinks at the bar in the front, and watch them go to work! Service-wise, our waitress was great. The only complain I had was that they were bringing all the appetizers out super fast so since there were only a few tables so I asked if they can slow down and bring out main dish out later, and it was still brought out when we were eating our appetizers. She didn't want to risk our pasta getting cold so our tiny table had a ton of plates everywhere. We were also told that there was a time limit and while we did go over, she didn't rush us too much, which was nice. Tip: I'd suggest booking for a later table, like around 730 or 8p. For us that night, the show started around 830p, so we only caught a tiny bit of it before we went to the front bar and sat at the bar hanging out (they sounded great btw), but couldn't really see any of the band and we left before they cleared out the tables since we already had too many and had to leave early! Try to get a table at the main area downstairs if possible!
google avatar

Jodie M.

Yelp
YO! This place gets lit on the weekends, lines out the door and the vibes are immaculate. Good music and the dance floor is always packed. If you tip the bartenders nice they will treat you nice. I haven't had their food, but I bet its good. I got to come back to give it a try.

Yelp
I came here on a Thursday night. It was a half-packed house. The DJ was average. I ordered a Moscow mule and it was watered down. All in all an average night. What really soured my mood was the Asian bouncer calling patrons names, cursing at them, and bullying them for no reason while they were showing IDs. His behavior clearly screamed "I'm insecure about my size so I've exclusively based my identity on bouncing at the Winston House." As professional as an outfit the Winston house appears, the facade is tarnished by the "I peaked in high school" behavior this bouncer exudes. Andy, please save the passive aggressive, pedantic response you're drumming up reading this and use that time to fix your bouncer situation. Word spreads fast amongst musicians.
google avatar

Christopher M.

Yelp
Ok screw this, I'm claiming FTR because I'm actually here. Stunning venue near the beach with a great menu and even better cocktails. For those of you who don't know me I love cocktails and food and im super loyal to my friends in hospitality because they're the best at this. WH bar is run by the former bar manager at the nomad and Melrose umbrella co, so the drinks: amazing takes on classics most places fuck up. And the menu. Just. I mean. The duck tacos at insane and FULL of duck. The cheese balls blew my mind and the oysters... well my fiancée told Me they were great because I hate oysters. Dont @ me. They're snot on a half shell. At any rate, come here. Right nao. Just bring your van card cuz you're not getting it without it.
google avatar

Robert H.

Yelp
Poor experience all across. Antiquated interior, but I can get the classic LA charm so to each their own. The standout unfortunately was the very very poor service. Noticeable difference in treatment for my group based on whether an individual was a racial minority - just saying it how it happened, not up to me. I love to support local businesses but that's not ok at all. There was a specific bouncer that was extremely rude to my female friends as well as other females in line - not the first time he's been mentioned on Yelp and the fact that the owner refuses to address any of this while responding to only positive reviews says a lot. Plenty of options in the SB - respectfully, stay away from here.
google avatar

Fred L.

Yelp
I don't know where to begin. The bar tender rolled her eyes at me for asking for an itemized bill. I asked for an itemized bill and she disappeared for 20 min. I asked for manager and she was even more rude.. I'm a nice guy- to whoever is reading this .. She then came back after 20 min and she Said "we're just going to take care of the bill"... I said no absolutely not, I'm not getting my drinks for free, that's not right... she said "well we took care of it" so she left. I thought that was strange.. but I left , because she said I was "all set"... I go home and check my credit card, guess what? They charged me and pulled a fast one on me without my signature:.. I'm pretty sure this is illegal in the state of California.. Anyhow I called my credit card company and explained they couldn't itemize my credit card and they reversed the charge... but I'm sure my credit card company ate the charge. I am writing this to show people that this restaurant/bar is actively scamming people at the bar because they're not providing receipts and taking advantage of patrons on the daily... I will be contacting the BBB and my lawyer because they can't keep stealing from people.. How is this going on or allowed to be happening!! Law enforcement should be involved and look into this!

Yelp
Had a reservation for dinner at Winston house. Had mine and my friends jacket stolen when we left it at the table after we finished eating. Restaurant manager said it happens all the time and come back tomorrow to look for it and then walked off. Shout out to the bouncer Arthur who actually tried to look. Everyone else: RUN!!! Thieves have this place cased and they're looking for targets!

Yelp
Came to Venice to eat for the first time with a friend and happy she decided on Winston House. We requested a table but reservations were full so we sat at the bar which worked out for the better. Our bartender Eddie took great care of us even though he was busy and made us tasty cocktails from our vague requests. He also recommended us amazing dishes we can share. The Spicy Noodles, Burrata, and Chicken Nuggets are a must order (trust on the chicken nuggets, they're not the usual nuggets). Definitely coming back and ordering the Duck Tacos next time! Sorry for the pic having some food eaten already but I had to try it as soon as I saw it :)

Yelp
If you are under 30 and looking to relive the college bar scene, or if you're looking to hook up with a drunk 20 year old, this is the place for you. This place will take you back to college frat parties, FAST. Do not go here for a nice dinner with live music, you will be fooled. It's a post college bar with ultra sweet premade cocktails - think frat punch- and a bunch of kids ordering tequila shots. Live music is blasting and it ends quickly followed by a DJ. We went here thinking we were going to get a lounge style live music dinner and we could hardly exit by 9 pm the place was PACKED like it was ladies night and $1 drinks. This is your place for a 20 year old party. Otherwise, skip. I hope I saved someone from our experience . Food was OK. Everything leans on the sweet side, avocado gem salads- nice , covered in cheese and sweet. Duck tacos- super flavorful, and on the sweeter side. Mushroom ravioli - yikes, heavy flat cream, dry shaved unflavored cheese and dried mushrooms. Skip the ravioli. Actually just eat before you come here to party...

Yelp
Fantastic meal, got the spaghetti bolognese dish and was spectacular! Will take a picture of the meal before but as you can see I kinda enjoyed it... lol 5/5 also the service is great, our waitress and the crew all taking care of the table was welcoming. Will be back for more

Yelp
I have really become a fan of the spicy noodles here, but the duck tacos, oysters, and steak are also excellent. The staff is always so friendly, courteous, and attentive. Winston House threads the needle between elegance and edginess - everyone here is stylish, but not pretentious like some other LA bars, and people genuinely are there for a good time not just to people watch (but the people watching is GOOD). There is a live jazz band most nights and afterwards it goes to DJ sets over the weekend. The drinks are great and the vibe is immaculate. Whether you're planning to come for dinner and a show or party through the night - this is where to have fun on the westside.

Yelp
Love this spot! From drinks to after parties, Winston house has it all! And Jaedyn is truly a gem!!!

Yelp
Gorgeous new space for foodies, cocktails and live music with the comfort of being surrounded by staff and patrons who are all fully vaccinated. We had a great night. Next time I will request booth seating near the stage.

Yelp
Been here a few times on the earlier side for dinner with my husband for date night and when friends were in town. The food is fantastic! We did have an issue one time with the steak taking a while but the staff was extremely apologetic and handled it perfectly by comping some drinks for us. Nice spot to have a good dinner and listen to some great live jazz. I know it gets crowded later on which isn't my scene but if you come early and with reservations it's perfect. We've tried the cheeseballs, duck tacos, oysters, himachi, and steak fries and they're all great. The steak comes with a couple different sauces that make the dish.

Yelp
Jessica is a sweet angel, thank god for her. On a busy holiday weekend Saturday night, my friends and I got stuck in a huge line waiting to get inside Winston House. People were aggressively bothering the door staff about when they would be let in when the venue had already exceeded capacity, but Jessica gracefully managed all of the drunk people outside (including myself) so that we had a realistic idea of how long we would be waiting and even got us a cup of water when we felt dehydrated from the heat. Will keep coming back just because the staff is nice!

Yelp
Venice has been in need of a place like this for decades. One of my go to recs for visitors and locals, Winston House has something for every type of night. My recs: start off with dinner (reservations highly recommended) to guarantee yourself in for the post dinner fun. For dinner I recommend the steak frites and duck tacos. Soooo good. They have an amazing house band that starts off most nights l, that reminds me of the Saturday Night Live band, so much fun, so high energy and gets everyone in a good mood. That said I've also seen everything from comedy, to huge name artists and DJs. They do such a great job at curating the entertainment that I trust showing up blindly will still undoubtably be a good night. Also if you're the type that's into bottle service, not to mention it's probably the most affordable in LA for getting a good table and celebrating with a big group!
