"This Somerville bakery has been doing its thing for decades — maybe over a century, by some accounts — although it’s changed locations and hands over the years. Once Italian, now with a touch of Portuguese, the bakery continues to serve simple, affordable loaves, including Scali, a Boston-area Italian-style favorite; French; Vienna; and more." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

Cash only, great egg tarts, and the Portuguese sweet bread loaf is actually less sweet than in Rhode Island, and rectangle loaves (vs round). I definitely prefer this, but am much closer to PVD. 100% worth a visit!!

Google
Delicious and affordable rolls and breads. They also carry cheeses and some meats, and an array of cookies, muffins, pastel de nata, and other pastries. Friendly and locally owned!

Google
Great selection of beers! Only a few IPAs so a nice variety. Burger was top notch, and the iced coffee is awesome!

Google
A small local bakery with affordable breads and cookies. Came in to try some cookies and pastries recommended by the locals. Most of the small cookies that I got didn’t taste freshly baked, and the pasteis was also not as good as some people described. As a matter of fact, they were similar to what you could get at the bakery aisles in grocery stores. On the other hand, the large chocolate chip cookie was superb. This was understandable given that they were understaffed, but I wouldn’t recommend getting the small cookies that are sold by the pound.

I've been going here for 25 years. The customer service and the quality of baked goods never disappoints. Love the Portuguese rolls and their Pasteis. Always love me some Pasteis for a trip down memory lane to when I visited Portugal!

Google
Someone hit the nail on the head with their “no frills bakery” review. Not sure about the cookies, but the rolls, chorizo & pasteles de nata were incredible. Great service with lovely people. Can’t beat their prices either!

This is the real deal. Old school, cash only, and probably the most affordable food by volume in greater Boston. If you need a big bag of good bread to make a metric ton of sandwiches for cheap, this is where you go. If you want to make some pizzas at home, this is where you go. If you miss Portugal and need a Pasteis de Nata fix, or some delicious chorizo or a blood sausage, this is where you go. If you want to pay $15 for a single loaf of Sourdough bread, there’s lots of places to do that in Somerville but this ain’t it.

Yelp
Huge baked goods - excellent value. The pineapple turnover was gigantic and heavy. That didn't stop me from eating it all though. The crust was thick and doughy - not my favorite texture but still very edible. The filling was perfect - fruity and sweet but not overly so. I'd definitely get it again and also try the apple turnover. The Scali bread with seeds in the crust is popular. Also huge. They slice it for you. It seems their rolls go very quickly. Multiple people came in and asked for different types of rolls and some were disappointed they were out by late morning.

Yelp
A MUST DO! 5 STARS! The Traditional Easter Egg Bread PANE DI PASQUA was Sold Out at numerous bakeries in the Boston area. I went to Royal Pastry in Cambridge, since I was picking up another dessert there too. I asked if they knew another bakery that might possibly have the Italian Easter Egg Bread. Next door at Central Bakery was another bakery that was also completely sold out. They were nice enough to suggest calling this place & sent me to a bakery I've never heard of or been to before called Winter Hill Bakery in Somerville. I went there & couldn't believe it, they still had a few left of the PANE DI PASQUA in different sizes from 1 egg to 4 egg. I got the 4 egg. It was a Big Hit at Easter with the Gang. Everyone Loved it. The Easter Traditional Bread was Light & airy with just a hint of sweetness like a little old lady from Italy made it. DELICIOUS! I can't comment on anything else in the store because that was all that I purchased. I will definitely go back when I'm in the area again & try some other items. They have metered parking out in front. On Sundays the Parking is Free @ the meters. And a Shout Out & a Mighty Big Thanks again to Royal Pastry in Cambridge for helping me out here. I would have been totally bummed out if I didn't have this on Easter. It's a Holiday Tradition. It used to be, you had to have Mega Bucks & be really Rich to have the Good Life, not anymore. The Game has changed. You've been Upgraded. Now You Can Live Like a King on a Limited Budget!

Yelp
I think I got something that wasn't quite what I expected, or perhaps I didn't prepare it right when I brought it back home. It was something akin to a blueberry or apricot turnover; it was huge (that's a plus!) but it was too sweet, and the bakery / pastry exterior was way too tough. But the other things that others have mentioned look really good, so I look forward to trying those in the future.

Brenda L.

Yelp
Bread and prices are good. However, service is poor. They always seem so angry and frustrated at the line on the weekends. Here's an idea, work faster and be nicer. The older woman is nasty to deal with.

Chris H.

Yelp
First time customer. Looking for a source for Scali bread, with Esposito's in Saugus closed for renovations. Baked daily here, according to the very kind counter lady. She apologized that they don't sell seeded rolls, although they're on the blackboard. Also bought two of the Portuguese egg custards (pasteis de nata). Back home, I started with the heel of the Scali loaf. Nice! But a slice from the middle betrayed too soft a crumb. Same problem with La Cascia, in Medford. Sigh. Good custards. They taste a little plain at first, but went well with tea.

Andrea B.

Yelp
Our family has been stopping here for years and years and years for the fresh bread. It has been a very long time since I have been there but I look forward to going back. The service is quick and always friendly. When I step through the door, it's like I was am a 12-14 year old again. I hope this bakery stays open for a very long time.

Allison E.

Yelp
Go for the pasteis de nata! Tiny but great. Inexpensive, too, for this labor intensive dessert. Parking is a little tough so many people seem to double park. I haven't tried anything else there!

Jess M.

Yelp
Fluffy delicious scala bread with a crispy sesame seed crust. Yummy assorted cookies too. They also sell calzones but I haven't tried those yet. FYI if you come here before a major holiday expect long lines and considering ordering ahead for larger orders.

Jan B.

Yelp
I have only been to this location once. It is really a minimal type of bakery. Mostly either cookies or flan based desserts and they have a wide array of bread. I tried the almond flour and coconut and both were very good I would recommend this place in the future.

Denise E.

Yelp
I was intrigued by one of the reviewers mentioning of pasteis de nata, so I came in for a visit. The lady behind the counter also told me these tarts are all from Portugal. I bought 3 pasteis de nata (they were delicious), and a Vienna bread (just OK) for less than $5.00. What a bargain. They also have interesting looking pineapple and lemon turnovers. Will need to try these next time.

Bob A.

Yelp
Winter Hill Bakery has been my go to bakery for years, and I typically give it 5 stars! They have the best rolls anywhere around. There is usually an older woman working there. She's great with all of the customers. She hasn't been there for the past month or so (hopefully she's ok) and the guy who has been working there always has his mask well below his nose. While I love this bakery, this lack of respect for customers is a real turn off and I may have to go elsewhere.

Robo T.

Yelp
Came here for the pasteis de nata for the portuguese huz. He was not disappointed. Overall this is mostly a bread bakery. There were many fresh baked loaf and roll options. Pastries options are limited. The shop is nothing pretty to look at and a bit run down in appearance from years of business.

A A.

Yelp
The older woman here was super rude! We waited in line for almost 30 mins and when me and my daughter finally got inside she came up to me and told me that kids where not allowed in the bakery because of covid. She expected me to leave her outside, my child is 8 years old, she's old enough to understand not to touch things or to wear a mask but she's not old enough to be left outside where there was a line with strangers. I told her that her dad is an essential worker and we were trying to support a small local business. I take my child with me where ever I go since there's no child care. She told me to leave her home alone if I have to. What a jerk! We immediately left after that and my daughter was in tears. She felt like she's not wanted around and is scared to go to a store with me now. Not everyone has family disposable to watch the kids. I felt so defeated.

Suzanne P.

Yelp
I stopped here a few weeks ago and was very excited when I learned they were a Portuguese/Italian bakery that carried they custard tarts I grew to love when I visited Portugal! Large selection of Italian cookies and pastries as well as Portuguese custards and cookies and plenty of breads. Good, affordable prices. $10 credit card minimum. I will definitely be back!

K H.

Yelp
Sweet staff! Got some baked goods and I was going to get bread but I bought a turnover apple pie! Yummm

Alexandra L.

Yelp
Love Winter Hill Bakery! Bread and pastries are delicious SO affordable, and the people who work here are all so lovely! Great neighborhood spot!

Divya B.

Yelp
I loved the special Portuguese egg tarts they sell here! They taste so fresh and homemade and are only $1.15 each. The old ladies who work here are so sweet as well.

Kim N.

Yelp
I come here for the Portuguese egg tarts (natas). Call ahead to make sure they have some. They'll also set aside however many you want/need. Yes, the woman at the counter can be seem curt at times, don't take it personally. The natas are addictive.

Patrick L.

Yelp
This place is amazing! The bread is freshly baked every morning. I love the scaly bread. They also are dog friendly and create an extremely welcoming environment. Great traditional Portuguese treats as well. Anitah K loves this place too!

Katie G.

Yelp
We ate a pound of Italian cookies in about 28 hours. I'm not proud, but they were that good. We'll be back!

Tony A.

Yelp
Bread is baked on the premises and is great. the scala is the best and try the Portuguese rolls if they are not sold out.

Colin M.

Yelp
This is out favorite scali around. You can go to other local grocery stores and buy Winter Hill breads for $3.50, or come straight to the source and only spend $1.95. The service is always very friendly and welcoming.

Kelsey C.

Yelp
After reading all the reviews here I went into the Winter Hill Bakery with a cautious view. I can happily say that I had an incredible experience! Simply the best. Sue was the lovely woman that helped us and was very talkative and helpful explaining the different breads and pastries. She was so gracious that she let my roommate and I try one of her handmade custard cups on the house! They were so creamy and delicious! I didn't think things could be much better but they did. After looking at the beautiful display case of all the goodies, my roommate and i decided upon this amazing chocolate peanut better cookies. We only wanted four to start and she put them in a baggie for us no problem. we ended up only paying for the sweet rolls we bought, the cookies were on the house too! She said they were a welcome to the neighborhood gift. We exchanged names and she welcomed us to the area (Im a transplant from Maine and my roommate is from Western MA) and told us when she worked so she could help us again. When we returned home and I pulled out the cookies from the bag she hadnt given us four cookies, but instead 8! That just blows my mind and confirms that I have found my new favorite bakery! I will be back weekly for sure! Kindness goes a long way.

Joanne G.

Yelp
This place doesn't look like much but don't let the appearance fool you - their baked goods ROCK the HOUSE ya'll. Sweet bread so light that I had to tie a string to it so the wind wouldn't whip it out of my hand. Pineapple corn bread, say what?!?!? It's only available early, so wake up Somerville and Medford people and head your butts over for some of this!

Rich P.

Yelp
Fell in love with "Belems" or pasties de nata while vacationing in Lisbon. Was on a mission to find them in Boston area. Winter Hill makes them and they are really good. I've been able to satisfy my craving and introduce a number of friends to this delicious custard tart which is a Portuguese speci

Tim L.

Yelp
I noticed some not so great reviews about Winter Hill Bakery which is quite surprising. I truly love this place and am glad they're in Somerville. The bread is amazing! The service is quick and the pastries are awesome. I recommend Winter Hill Bakery to any bread lovers and anyone looking to feed their sweet tooth.

Demelza L.

Yelp
Get the buns!!! Amazing buns!! Also amazing maracuya (passionfruit) desserts. Love this bakery.

Chante M.

Yelp
Really good food and pastries it the Best bakery's Somerville i go there all the time and I will recommend people to go to that bakery

Michael W.

Yelp
We live right around the corner. We've only had the scali bread and the Portugese sweet bread, and both were amazing. This place isn't your typical bakery, and the selection is very limited. But if you're local, and you would like an affordable, delicious bread option near you, you can't go wrong here.

Jess G.

Yelp
Friendly people and amazing Portuguese rolls. I go there every week. Highly recommend this place

Chris P.

Yelp
Their portugese breads and pastries are pretty good, and quite fresh. They win for us by virtue of being right around the corner from our house. Service is a bit odd sometimes, but that may be due to the language barrier or other cultural issues. The sweet bread is our favorite.

Gerard D.

Yelp
A great little mom and pop with bread and rolls that make you drop to your knees and thank the heavens for bringing it into your life. Their little custard tarts are a pleasant little treat with a light fluffy flavorful custard and a flakey buttery crust that will melt in your mouth.

Nick K.

Yelp
The best place for the money for great Portuguese bread. I am a bread snob, and love this place. It is certainly nothing to look at, but it helps keep the bread a good price. This is one of the few places outside of Europe I like the bread. My only recommendation would be to repaint the sign up above.

David A.

Yelp
Limited selection, but great bread. Love the cornbread! It is not like a southern cornbread, but has a wonderful texture, great taste. Toasted is amazing! The rolls (portugese or french) are fresh and excellent.

Jennifer G.

Yelp
I stopped in here on Sunday for some breakfast food, but opted for dessert when I saw the beautifully decorated holiday cookies. I asked the proprietor to pick out her favorites and she presented a generous assortment. The fig turnover could happily feed two people. I was a bit blue before going into the store and Winter Hill Bakery cheered me right up. Delicious.

Mary C.

Yelp
I love this place! I go every Friday afternoon to buy dough, which is freshly made and still warm - and always over a pound, and make pizza or bake a loaf of bread. The rolls are excellent as is the bread! The customer service is also consistently good.

Nick F.

Yelp
Make sure when you reserve rolls you confirm with 100% certainty that they're closing at the time they say they're closing and that you get there an hour or 2 before they close. Because they'll sell YOUR reserved rolls. I reserved 36 Portuguese rolls for a 12:30 pickup under the impression they were closing at 1pm. Why that impression? Because they told me that when I reserved them. I get there at 11:55 and the woman working starts giving me lip that it's my fault that she started selling off my reserved rolls. When I tell her I was told I had until 12:30 to pick them up, she says "the other girl said that...I'm working today and I decided we are closing at 12 not 1." Some customer service they have there. Shame on them.

S N.

Yelp
I live nearby and have gotten some bread here--its pretty amazing to have a real bakery in the neighborhood. I'd be even more happy if it was also a coffee shop and they sold smaller portions (who can finish a whole loaf of bread before it goes bad?). I'm more of a sourdough/wheat guy too--how about making some of that?

Joshua M.

Yelp
This place is right across the street from where I live. It's one of the many first-generation immigrant small bakeries in the area. The texture and taste of the bread is a cut way above the other bakeries in the area. They have cheap cheese pizza slices on most days and their pizza dough is better than most of the subpar to average pizza places just down the street. But I gotta bring my Brazilian co-worker some of their Portuguese sweet bread so he can tell me if this place is the "real deal."

Matt M.

Yelp
The pastries are mediocre at best. I rarely write reviews, and I felt obligated to write this review because I went there based on high yelp review ratings. Honestly go to the dunkin doughnuts up the street, and you will have a tastier experience.

Jody M.

Yelp
great bread and pizza. and inexpensive too. i agree about the service being a bit odd. sometimes they're friendly and sometimes they're not.

Michael Y.

Yelp
I used to live beside this little bakery and I always loved coming here. I still visited frequently because of their fresh bread. It is a very small bakery so don't expect too much but you can always find good things here fresh every day. Also the prices are really really cheap. You really can't go wrong with this place

Jackie M.

Yelp
I had the wheat bread loaf. Simply loved it! The texture was on point and the flavor was great. Super reasonable price. A great neighborhood bakery churning out quality bread.

Ash H.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem in the Winter Hill are and is absolutely amazing! Everything is homemade and smells delicious. You can't beat the prices and the service was sensational...Sue was so personable. I'll definitely be frequenting this place more often!

Rose M.

Yelp
Winter Hill Bakery I go there ever time I need bread and it's delicious. But one problem is that the employee who works during the week and Saturday. She is new her name is Maria. She is rude to the to me and to because I wanted assorted pastries. I live near the bakery every time she is smoking outside and then goes back to serve the clients with smelling of cigarette. One day I went to get bread, she was standing outside smoking I got in to the store and waited for 6 minutes to be served by her and then she didn't even wash her hands. Sanatazion needed. I would make sure I don't buy there while she's is there. The other employes are nice and helpful.
