Best Restaurants in Mobile, Alabama | Eater Atlanta

"The go-to place for oysters on Dauphin Street, Wintzell’s has been a Mobile institution for more than 80 years. The no-frills restaurant is beloved for its gulf seafood in gumbo, crawfish etouffee, crab cakes, and, of course, oysters served “fried, stewed or nude.” Other Southern staples like fried green tomatoes and bread pudding also grace the gigantic menu, all best enjoyed in the super-casual dining room wallpapered in catchphrases from founder J. Oliver Wintzell. There are two locations in Mobile to choose between, though the original is downtown." - Sarah Bisacca

Wow! This is one of our favorite restaurants in Mobile. The Rockefeller oysters are so good. We just can’t get enough of them. The beers are cold and the atmosphere is really nice!!

We are home celebrating my 50th McT HS Class Reunion. When we’re home, we always try to stop by one of our favorite places to eat. Wintzell’s Oyster House is that place. We love their seafood gumbo. Actually we love everything on the menu. We had the combination lunch special. Fried shrimp, fried oysters, fried catfish & hush puppies & a side of grits. My wife had the same, but ordered a baked potato w/butter & sour cream for her side. The food is reasonably priced. We had an awesome server name Brandi, who provided excellent service to us. Thank you Brandi!! 🙏🏽❤️❤️❤️👊🏽

We had an amazing birthday lunch for my husband. Service was wonderful and food delicious. I even found two black pearls in the oysters.

It tasted like there was no seasoning on any dish our group of 3 ordered. The shrimp was fine. Specifically, the catfish tasted like wet paper and grilled oysters had no seasoning at all, the fried oysters tasted like flour. The sprite tasted like carbonated water and the lemonade didn’t seem to have any sugar. Server was nice, made a few mistakes, and didn’t pick up a single plate throughout our entire meal. So, our table was just full of plates the whole time. Now that I think about it, she might have thought we weren’t done with the plates because they were barely eaten(for a reason). Atmosphere was decent but overheard two different tables near us also needing mistakes fixed.

I’ve been eating at Wintzell’s since I was 12, when Mr Oliver was alive and the Dauphin St restaurant was the only one. Last night I ordered takeout from the Airport Blvd restaurant, which included the broiled JO Platter, supposedly including scallops. The “scallops” were all the same size, shape and tasted anything but how an actual scallop tastes. In my opinion these were shark or skate or ray, punched out with a cookie cutter. The texture was tough and chewy and not even what an overcooked scallop would taste or chew like. I called the manager who told me that they have a disclaimer saying their food could possibly be farm raised or a fish product. She apologized and offered me something free off the menu the next time I came in or ordered takeout. That will never happen. Mr Oliver would be rolling in his grave over this and it’s just disgraceful. This is what happens when the person who creates a product that catches on, then passes away and the business is taken over by a corporation driven by profits over quality and freshness. I’ll never give them my business again and that’s sad.

Wintzells Oyster House 6700 Airport Blvd. Mobile, AL Visited 11/2024. A local favorite. The house was packed as the night went. The oysters (raw and chargrilled) were ok : fresh but small. The red fish and grilled salmon dinners were delicious. Salmon salad was wonderful. Gumbo was really so so. Price was reasonable. Service was good.

Haven’t been here in a long long time but will definitely be back sooner rather than later. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. Left stuffed and happy and for a family of 4 the price wasn’t too bad. I love the batter they use to fry the fish and shrimp. It’s not the corn meal batter a lot of other places use. We thoroughly enjoyed eating here.
