Vögele

"This restaurant is a Bolzano institution. It is a typical inn whose origins are lost in the mists of time, and is still furnished in traditional Biedermeier - style. The menu focuses on regional cuisine, with an occasional hint of the Mediterranean." - Michelin Inspector

Google
Really beautiful restaurant with a notable history. The food is wonderful and was a Michelin star rated restaurant. I ordered the Gulash, Rigatoni and Schnitzel. All three courses were delicious and hinted an Italian and German fusion. I recommend getting a reservation.

This restaurant is steeped in history. The staff is professional and friendly. The menu is more Südtirol-style than typical Italian. The Wienerschnitzel, made authentically with veal, was tender and fried to perfection. The Knödel also had a unique flavor I haven't tasted in Germany. I would highly recommend this place.

Google
Quaint restaurant featuring local tyrolian cuisine. It’s a vibrant spot and institution in town amongst locals and tourists. I found the dishes good especially the octopus and grilled steak with mushrooms. However, I did find the service a bit lacking, not very detail oriented and one may have to repeat their request. Other than that a must try in Bolzano.

Super friendly staff who helped us with our stroller, both with the stairs and finding a quiet spot. The food was excellent across the board, from the cold cuts (the best I’ve had in Bolzano) to the main dish, everything was spot on. The atmosphere is also very pleasant, making you feel fully immersed in Tyrolean culture.

Google
Authentic place with South Tyrolean cuisine. When booking, ask for a table either outside on the street or on the first floor - the second and third floors don’t really have the same atmosphere. The food is excellent, exactly what you need in this region: the must-try canederli (traditional bread dumplings made with speck or cheese and best enjoyed in broth), amazing chanterelle mushrooms (now in season), and veal head. The goulash is wonderful, and even the kids’ schnitzel is absolutely delicious.

Charming spot near the center of Bolzano, just a short walk from the cathedral. The restaurant is located on a picturesque, cobbled street with lovely outdoor seating under the arcades — perfect for people-watching and enjoying the local atmosphere. Service was quick and efficient. I tried a regional specialty: a selection of Hirschknödel (venison dumplings) with different flavors, served with a warm bacon salad — a typical South Tyrolean dish that was both tasty and interesting. I also had the tagliatelle with wild boar ragù, another local classic. The sauce was flavorful and well prepared, though the pasta itself was slightly overcooked and oddly short, as if it had been cut — a bit of a shame. Still, considering the central location and overall good quality of the food, the prices were quite reasonable. A solid and honest place I’d recommend for a casual meal while strolling through Bolzano.

The meals we had - ravioli and Schnitzel - were both delicious, portions were nice too, but the inside dining area is uncomfortably hot, however if you opt to eat outside, you need to share the airspace with smokers.

Google
This was a super tasty wiener schnitzel. We actually came without looking at reviews because this place was always packed when passing by, so one day we dropped in earlier for lunch and even then there was no more seating in the outside or first floor, but luckily still plenty of seating upstairs, which also completely filled up rather quickly. Food was very tasty and I regret not ordering more that day as this was one of the best restaurants I dined at while in Bolzano. It was only later while searching for best wiener schnitzl in Bolzano that this place consistently showed up. Also, the environment is quite cozy, and you can imagine the long history of this restaurant. Only downside is service is quite slooooow, which is pretty much standard in this area.

Yelp
My favorite place in Bolzano. On this trip we went there twice. Great service both times (once with reservation and once without). The menu is extensive as is the wine list. I love the canderli and the wiener schnitzel. The Apple strudel was the best we had on our trip.

Yelp
Really bad service (worse than typical service you receive in Europe). The appetizer was really good. Then everything went downhill. They waited one and a half hours after we ordered to tell us that my husbands dish wasn't available. Then, my husband had to change his plate. After 20 minutes we finally got his dish but not mine. I had to wait one hour more for my dish. Terrible service. We usually come to Bolzano to visit family and will never ever come back to this restaurant.

Yelp
We ate at Vögele for the last night of our Italy trip. The restaurant is much bigger than you realize, with several floors scattered with different sized tables. We originally were sat on the top floor, but it was busy with large parties and we could hardly hear each other speak. We asked if we could be sat outside (the weather was perfect) and they kindly accommodated our request. The food was typical for the region, and we were excited to try more local flavors. Asparagus was in season, so we had to order the asparagus soup (which came with a bite size tempura shrimp that was adorable). My husband ordered the spinach filled mezzelune, which melted in the mouth. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Highly suggested to have dinner at this restaurant. Rich wine selection at competitive prices, highly suggested the gnocchi and the mousse al cioccolato bianco. Waiters are very friendly and location is very suggestive. During summer make sure to have dinner outside under the portico. Every table has candle light. There's a light breeze that makes the dinner very enjoyable.

Yelp
Good and service were great. American family of four (two young adults) in Italy for first time and first dinner out on a busy Friday. After long day hiking around alpi di suisi, we got there at about 8pm on Friday night, ready to eat and to eat well. We did so. After cutting through a big crowd outside and inside, we were told maybe an hour, given a card, told/motioned to second floor. Up we went. We were seated and served immediately, so, who knows. Enjoyed lovely venison goulash, tyrolian dumplings, bacon dumpling soup, meat and cheese plater for two, water, wine, and the hot raspberries with ice cream and the apple pancake dessert. The server and staff were superb in accommodating us on a busy night. We were all nicely sated and after 2 wonderful hours, walked to our airbnb. Everything was under $200US. A true value for the quality and quantity of food. While it was nice not to be immediately identified as Americans, the staff pretty quickly switched to English upon hearing my awful Italian! Oh, the second floor was shockingly quiet given the racous, good time everyone was having on the first floor.

Yelp
I arrived for dinner and fortunately, I was quite hungry. The portions were generous and the food was good. The service was a bit disorganized. Of course the local specialties are likely best, and they mostly contani meat. But there are a few nice vegetarian dishes on the menu.

Yelp
I've dined here twice and loved it each time. The first time I dined at this restaurant was in the fall of 2009 for dinner, only to return in the winter of 2012 for lunch and have an equally memorable meal. After dining for both meals, while both were excellent, I think the fare is better suited for dinner. As you enter, you feel like you have stepped back in time. The ground level is dark, woodsy, and moody. As you go upstairs, more formal dining rooms exist. The attire is more casual than the atmosphere. Both times I have dined upstairs. The one knock on the upstairs is that it does get a bit warm. I'd love to sit outside and people watch while I eat, but each time the weather has been a bit chilly and/or already full of patrons. There are not a ton of outdoor tables, so I guess you need a bit of luck. The restaurant has a rich history as a secret meeting place during World War II. It's definitely worth reading up on that history, as they do have some information available. The restaurant expertly blends the cuisines of Austria and Italy together, as is customary in the Trentino-Alto Adige region. The menu changes quite frequently, but it is a good blend of the two cuisines, though it does tend to be heavier, heartier fare. There are good choices from a beer and wine standpoint, particularly considering that there are several wonderful whites that come from the region. I've been twice, and should my travels bring me back to Bolzano (an under-rated destination in northern Italy), I will not hesitate to return. If you have one night in Bolzano and are looking for a place to eat dinner, look no further.
