Today we visited the Wisconsin Cheese Mart downtown. It was compact, but had everything we wanted. Also, the guy working there kindly explained what a cheese curd is, and how they differ from other types of cheese one can buy in grocery stores. This was a fun place, the cheese we bought was delicious, and we may return tomorrow. We've eaten so much cheese already during our week in Milwaukee, we are turning into rats.

Lots of cheeses to sample, fun items and friendly staff. They have packages of cheese ready for your suitcase and a cooler if needed.

Comfortable parking, good service. Carries over 150 unique Wisconsin cheese varieties and ships nationwide

Google
Not exactly what I was expecting … I figured it would be like a flea market with vendors hawking their wares. No matter. This place is great! There were all types and varieties of cheese and cheesy products. We bought what would fit in the cooler but probably could have enjoyed even more. Wisconsin is truly cheese heaven! The staff was pleasant and helpful. There were about 4 types of cheese squares for tasting. Great location to the restaurants by the water.

Google
Very good selection. Wish there were more cheeses to sample. Service was excellent. She even provided some things to do in the area. Worst part is the parking. You have to pay for street parking so we felt limited with time we could spend downtown.

Google
They had a huge selection of cheese from Wisconsin The cashier was nice and because i spent over 60 dollars i got a little tiny cooler bag for my cheese. The store looks small from the outside but is the length of the building. Sooper!

Google
Friendly and helpful staff, vast selection of Wisconsin cheeses. Samples of a few varieties available. Their prices are very reasonable. They also have small cooler bags which makes traveling by air easy.

Google
This place is awesome! As someone who needs a strict low sodium diet yet was craving blue cheese dressing- nothing local worked that I could find. WCM not only had some ridiculously low sodium blue cheese (3%)but they made multiple types including smoked variety that was fire and all clearly listed sodium percentages. Add to it very reasonable shipping and expertly packed boxes- this place is amazing and I will be a repeat customer!

Yelp
Holy cow.... This place is an absolute MUST if you're looking for cheese anything. The store was very organized and the staff is super helpful. The cheeses have great descriptions so it was pretty self explanatory and they offered some samples if you know nothing about cheese, like myself. They truly had something for everyone, couldn't resist getting a Carolina reaper cheese. With a $60+ purchase, they provided a cheese cooler bag which perfectly packed my haul for the flight back home. Great place if you're looking to gift some cheese, too. Can't wait to visit again if I'm ever back in Wisconsin.

Yelp
The Wisconsin Cheese Mart is a tourist destination with a nice selection of cheese in Downtown Milwaukee. Their cheese can be pricey depending on what you get. I enjoy the sample section near the middle of the store allowing you to try before you buy. During our visit in July 2024, they were selling fresh cheese curds. We picked up a bag of Malcore's brand cheddar flavored cheese curds. When we got home and cracked into the bag we could tell the curds were fresh as we chewed away into its waxy shell enjoying the mild cheddar flavor and it's squeaky texture. We enjoyed this cheese curd purchase from the Cheese Mart. It made for a tasty snack making it one of our favorite food souvenirs from Wisconsin.

Yelp
OK, this place knows exactly who their customer base is- they give you a mini cooler and ice pack if you spend $50. You will very easily spend $50, the problem is how to get everything home. Yes there's cheese, but there's also sausage, cream, drinks, and caramels. The store is very basic: you walk in and there's all these options in open coolers like at the super market. Service is great, but parking is a little hit or miss, just depends on the time of day you go.

Yelp
Cheese is a must if you're in Wisconsin. There is a big selection. We grabbed two blocks of cheese and a cheese spread. I asked about the yelp check-in offer and was told they don't provide that discount.
google avatar

Benjamin B.

Yelp
The customer service here is phenomenal! Be sure to have your soft cheeses and curds shipped only during the cooler months of the year, otherwise you may have to discard them if they are warm upon arrival. I highly recommend the Prairie Sunset cheese by Roth. This cheese is sweet, somewhat nutty, with possible hints of butterscotch. This delicious creation was the Silver Medal winner at the 2016 World Cheese Awards!

Yelp
A convenient spot to get some local cheese! The employees were so kind and gave recommendations of what cheese traveled best in case I didn't finish it on the trip! The samples were delicious and they knew so much about the different cheeses that they shared with us.
google avatar

Yelp
Love this cheese mart! My mom and I were welcomed by two friendly ladies. They offered us samples as we entered. We tried Muenster, morel and leek Monterey jack, sharp Cheddar, and some sausage. I wound up buying the Cheddar and sausages. They were both on sale which was a nice surprise. This cheese mart has a vast variety of cheeses and sausages. Highly reccomend this cheese mart when in Milwaukee!

Yelp
I was lured in by the wall of cheese and it did not disappoint! This was my second visit since i couldn't help but return after being so happy with my last visit! The staff is so friendly and helpful but also SAMPLES!!!!!! There is a massive selection of flavored cheese curds (TY Wisconsin), TRY the Bloody Mary cheese curds , cheese spreads, sausages and little treats! So much to check out while you enjoy the little samples and probably chat with one of the friendly employees! You won't leave empty handed!

Yelp
Walked in this shop and pretty much said "take all my money". When I knew I was coming to Wisconsin for the first time, I knew I was going to be buying cheese. Jeff was working as I walked in within a few minutes of closing and he was so wonderful. He made wonderful recommendations and I can't wait to taste everything with my friends and family. Cheese for all!

Sydney

Yelp
Fun! My first time visiting. They had delicious little samples. Would recommend to stop by if you're visting or buying cheese. just a cute store in general. They also had delicious little samples. Very fun! Definitely stop by if you're nearby.

Yelp
Cool place with large selection. Knowledgeable staff. Pleasant experience visiting the area and store.

Yelp
Quaint shop with loads of local cheese options and friendly service. They had free samples to try of select items. Excellent. Since we were traveling and spent over $50, they gave us a small travel cooler and ice pack for our cheese.
google avatar

Yelp
100% the best place to buy and select cheese - especially for an out of towner. There are so many choices, and you can check on stability for travel which is awesome. They also have delicious samples yum! You can grab a Miller High Life cold in the bottle too.
google avatar

Yelp
Located on the former Old World street across the street from Maders Restaurant. Friendly staff and unique items including cheese, jerky and of course cheese hats. Make sure you check into Yelp and receive an extra discount.

Yelp
This has been a bookmark for a while like every place I stopped at downtown on Saturday to checked out because I try to avoid downtown as much as possible. It's smaller than I imagined and long/narrow with a cold case along one wall. The cheese assortment is amazing but I expected more accessories like meats, crackers etc. The sausage/meat offerings were minimal compared to the cheeses and I guess I expected a sandwich offering which I didn't see. Overall it's a nice little cheese shop.
google avatar

Claudia E.

Yelp
This place is awesome. We're from out of state and we were so excited to go to a cheese shop. We spent an obscene amount of money but it has been well worth it. They offer so many different types of cheeses, and you can sample several of them in the shop. The cheeses are well organized to help you best find what you're looking for. They're no strangers to having out of town guests, and they offer free travel coolers if you hit a spending minimum (we definitely did). Overall great experience, I would love to come back!

Yelp
Perfect little stop for all the Wisconsin cheese of your dreams! Located on the perfect street for souvenir shopping. It's in the old world, German area so all the food and bars down here are delicious.

Julia T.

Yelp
samples of cheese were available which made it very helpful to pick the right ones. The workers were so kind and helpful when discussing their favorite cheeses. I loved all the extremely cute cow themed decorations that added to the wisconsin ambiance.

Yelp
Where do you go when you wanna try all the cheese from the cheese capital of the country?? You go to Wisconsin Cheese Mart!! While looking up things to do, as soon as I saw that you could sample different kinds here, I was immediately in. I had to do at least one cheese-related thing while visiting Milwaukee. This place is essentially a small market for cheeses, Wisconsin souvenirs and a few other finds. They have a bar on the other side of the shop where you can purchase cheese boards and select a few to try out. These boards are really nice BTW, ours also came with crackers and apricots! It did take quite a bit of time to make our cheese boards with hardly anyone else in the shop, but we did get it eventually. We loved everything we tried! I feel like this place is essential for any tourist who loves cheese!

Yelp
Great place, friendly people, had everything you could dream of in cheese and more. We did buy one of their apple pastries delicious just like everything else in the store. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Whenever we come to Milwaukee, we stop here to stock up on cheese. The store was clean and the clerk was friendly and helpful. They had about a half dozen cheeses to sample. Always enjoy the cheese we buy from here. My current favorite is the Shepherd's Blend. It's absolutely delicious. They also carry Usinger's sausage which is a great summer sausage. If you're in Milwaukee, you should definitely stop here.
google avatar

Yelp
Cool place in the downtown area. Lots of cheese options. Free samples. Fun decor to include cheese head hats for sale. Efficient and helpful staff. If you find yourself downtown looking for something interesting, check them out! 10% Yelp discount for checking in!

Yelp
This place is highly rated for a reason. I popped in on Sunday morning and the shop was quiet. There were several different cheeses that I was able to sample including a lovely extra sharp cheddar. These folks are serious about their cheeses and there was even on cheddar that had been aged for 24 years (pricy, but I'm sure delicious). They also have a number of sheep mill cheeses to. The store employee was very knowledgeable and answered lots of questions that I had. I would recommend stopping in here.

Heidi G.

Yelp
So many choices. Friendly staff. Definitely worth stopping in. We stopped while on vacation and took some cheese home with us.
google avatar

Kaitlin K.

Yelp
Staff were very helpful, we wanted advice on which cheese to get and their recommendations were delicious. My husband was worried the blue cheese they recommended would be too mild as they described it as "on the milder side" but it is the perfect amount of bite in our opinion- but maybe we aren't very bold blue cheese connoisseurs yet! The shop itself is in a cute area of downtown and there is street parking nearby, we visited on a Thursday afternoon so it was easy to find a spot. The shop has a few items sitting out that you can sample which was helpful for deciding how aged we wanted the cheddar to be.

Yelp
This is such a happy little store. They're not joking around when they say they're a cheese mart- the place is jam packed with all sorts of cheeses. There must be a dozen types of curds alone! I appreciate that they had samples, as well as the fact if you spend a certain amount (I believe it was $25?) you get a free insulated bag to store your cheese. While checking out, the cashier realized that one of the bags I grabbed had a little mold on it. He was super apologetic and came around and grabbed another one for me, which I thought was really nice. When I got home, I found that the replacement bag did too, in a spot that was impossible to see from the packaging. I reached out on Facebook and they were so nice about it and offered a refund right away. The rest of the cheeses I had were delicious. I'll definitely make a point to stop in again if I'm in Milwaukee.

Yelp
CHEESE!!! I was very impressed by the amount of cheese, both in variety and brands, in this small shop. The staff was very helpful and knew a good amount about the cheese they had for sale. I'm sure there are many more samples in a "non-covid" time but even with precautions, I felt there was a good amount to try. The pricing is actually quite good. Don't forget to check-in and use your Yelp coupon. When we went they also packed our purchased cheese in a little insulated bag with ice packs.

Yelp
Nearby Usinger's just closed for the business day as I tugged on the locked door handle. It was cold, snowy, and I felt so defeated. Cue the aria to save the day when I realized Wisconsin Cheese Mart was down further at the street corner (2/17/20). It was still open! I walked in and the sheer variety on vast shelving was so tremendous. This first time visit to the Upper Midwest and America's Dairyland had to include a variety of cheese and sausages. It felt like Christmas dropping my massive haul at the register. Bought a variety to bring back to Seattle. My luggage was opened by TSA on ny flight back home, notification placed atop my bag of goodies. Just glad they did not quality check my purchases. Made sense versus buying a cheesy Tshirt or foam cheese hat. Eat those souvenirs! Do a Yelp check-in for a discount. Sign up to be on their mailing list, get more free cheese. A definite highlight on my brief visit to Milwaukee!

Yelp
This is a locally renowned cheese shop located right in the heart of historic downtown Milwaukee on quaint Old World 3rd Street.  We happened to visit while the Bucks were playing this Saturday afternoon at Fiserv Forum just a block away.  What difference does that make?  A big difference when you realize customers have to find metered street parking.  Oh well, just like the good ol' days of looking for a free street parking space around Wrigley Field for a day game - just keep circling and circling.  After about 15 minutes and on the verge of giving up, sure enough a spot opened up maybe 3 blocks away, woot woot.  And double woot as metered parking spots are free on Saturdays. The shop is historic, quaint, and popular.  There is a huge, diverse, and somewhat gourmet and exotic assortment of quality Wisconsin cheese products and it all looked reasonably priced for the quality.  Staff is friendly and you could tell they were the sort used to tourists from everywhere as it is that kind of shop. They also had small sample containers available for 5 of their cheeses (today it was 5 year old cheddar, bellavitano merlot, blueberry cobbler cheddar, milk stout beer cheese, and montamore) which was a nice touch.  They also have a large adjoining room for snacking or having a beverage but it wasn't being used when we were there.  We bought about $27 worth of goodies (some asiago, mozzarella, and monterey jack, and a milk chocolate cow pie) and our handy Yelp check-in netted us a 10% discount, nice again, and thank you WCM!  It was a fun stop and well worth a visit if you're really wanting to be an authentic Cheesehead!

Yelp
This is an awesome place to get cheese! It should be the first stop for your cheesy needs! They sell cheese curds to blocks of cheese. The worker was really nice and explaining what the differences are and what place has good cheese curds. Many of the cheeses are in travel friendly packaging for may of us who live out and state and intend to fly back. I must say that I bought a couple since they would last a while unrefridgerated. They also had a platter of cheese samples. I also think it's awesome that they sell the boxes that the cheese comes in. It really adds a nice flair and decor to a room. This place definitely making me want to be a cheesehead!
google avatar

Yelp
Lots of cheese and lots of variety. I was so excited to grab so many flavors, styles and textures to take home. They even come packed in a insulated bag and ice pack for travel. Clean store. Good customer service. Even some items for tasting. Definitely will be back

Yelp
I was in Milwaukee for only about 24 hours, but wanted to try some cheese curds while I was here. I'm so glad a Wisconsin local recommended Wisconsin Cheese Mart to me. There was so much cheese to choose from! They even provide you with a small cooler bag, which was helpful to keep the cheese cool for my flight home!
google avatar

Tatiana M.

Yelp
Huge variety of Wisconsin cheeses, they also have a table with samples of cheeses, I loved it cause I was able to choose three of four that I really liked. It's a good idea to come here if you want to take gifts back home. I also discovered this selection of cured meats so I took a couple. I was surprised how much I paid cause I honestrly thought it was gonna be more. Oh! And if you check in on yelp you get 10% off you purchase of 10 dollars or mor
google avatar

Yelp
What an excellent little cheese shop. There were plenty of samples. I got to try cheeses I've never heard of before. The oddest of them all was the brown cheese which tasted of brown sugar and caramel. Not a fan. I thought the prices were very approachable. *Pro tip. Sign up for the email list and receive a huge hunk of smoked gouda. Yes please!

Yelp
I asked a question on yelp about why this place won't put their phone number and it got removed because they complained that I posted that question! How stupid is that. This place does not publish a phone number so nobody can call them about issues with their order!!! And we placed an order with them and they did not respond to fix the order so we looked for their number and cannot find one! This place sucks if they get upset that I posted a question about why they don't publish a phone number!
google avatar

Yelp
Very unique market with a million cheese option and to make it even better there are samples for most of the cheese. Love the fact I can try out a sample before I purchase a whole block that I hate or know to purchase two blocks because I know I'll love it. I definitely purchased more than I intended because of all the samples. On the bright side there is a 10% discount if you check in on Yelp(to make up for all the additional blocks of cheese you will buy). Love the cheese curds super fresh and squeaky, smoked mozarella sticks were amazing, found this unique mango haberno, it is spicy but Soo delicious. After my trip to Wisconsin cheese Mart I have definitely turned into a cheese rat.

Yelp
Looking to impress someone with your charcuterie board curation skills? If so, I suggest you start your board creation process with a visit to Wisconsin Cheese Mart! This place is on the smaller side but has it all things cheese. Plus, the prices are extremely affordable, and cheese are made in Wisconsin. There is a huge range of cheeses from favorites to the unique, craft kinds (think bourbon infused cheddar). We walked away with 6 different cheeses including a Monterey Jack Habanero ($4.50) and a Parmesan Breaded cheese that is divine when heated up and served with marinara sauce ($6.00). The staff was very helpful. They overheard us discussing our flavor selections and helped us make final decisions for a well-rounded board. Samples are available in store. Samples are a range of cubed cheeses in individual plastic cups with lids. There is also a hand sanitizer stand at the front of the store. In addition to the cheese, there is a selection of crackers and fun cheese-themed apparel such as t-shirts and cheese heads and even postcards. Even if you stop in and peruse the shelves while trying a snack or two, I guarantee you will at least leave with a ton of phone pics. There are a ton of kitsch photo-ops :)

Yelp
Very personable cheese store located amongst the bars and restaurants of downtown. I was planning to stop at the Mars Cheese Castle but didn't have the time while planning to catch a flight. So I stopped here instead to get my stash of cheese curds and local cheese chunks. So glad I did! Very nice staff and a really good variety of cheese. Not to mention reasonably priced! There's also a 10% off deal with Yelp check in. GO!
google avatar

Anne G.

Yelp
Our good friend Fr. Chris brought us there. There is so good different kind of local Wisconsin cheeses! This is highly recommended, no regret!
google avatar

Yelp
Holy Moly this place is cheesy! They have an enormous selection of cheeses from Wisconsin. There is a table with samples. You will find all kind of cheeses like cranberry white cheddar, cheese fermented in red wine, cheese with horseradish and chive, and many more. They have so many unique items. Moreover, they sell sausages, crackers, and sweets. Plus, staff is helpful and courteous. Overall, 4.5 stars.
google avatar

PJ C.

Yelp
One of the best cheese shops in the area. They have a huge and very diverse selection of cheeses from around the state. You can sample many of the cheeses before making your purchase. The staff is knowledgable and very friendly. With a purchase of $5 or more (and your email address) you get a free mini-cooler and an ice pack to keep your purchases cold. A nice touch.
google avatar

Yelp
Honestly...if Wisconsin could be branded...I would call it...CHEESE COUNTRY! The best cheese shop ever and the cheesiest as well... All kinds of cheeses, cheese curds, pretzels, mustards, crackers, gift baskets, and yes..Cheese Head Wedges and Styrofoam Swiss Cheese Top Hats! I love the wax shaped mild cheddar in the shapes of cows, the State of Wisconsin and Beer Mugs. I got a tequila based cheddar cheese..which I had never heard of before...a must visit before leaving Milwaukee and also down the street from Milwaukee Brat House!

Yelp
While planning my trip to Milwaukee, I googled "best place to buy cheese in Wisconsin" and this place popped up with numerous high reviews, so I knew I had to pay this place a visit. I am so glad I did. It is a cheese shop combined with a bar/tasting area. There were plenty of options to choose from, but there were also numerous samples to try and I was able to buy so much more cheese because of that. I hate buying a whole block of cheese without knowing the flavor and then end up throwing the whole thing in the trash in case I end up not liking it. I am very picky about my cheese, so trying out the samples really made it easy to choose. One cheese completely stood out for it's unique flavor and it's called the "Ski Queen, Gjetost Cheese". It's basically a sweet brown colored cheese that tastes a lot like caramel. To be honest, it was really really good. I ended up buying two whole blocks of it. Of course, I also bought a lot of flavored cheese curds like the garlic and herbs and the buffalo. I was worried about the drive back to Chicago, but the shop had a chart that shows you how long the cheese can last before it has to be refrigerated. I found that extremely helpful. They also sometimes give out a free Castello Edam cheese block if you sign up for their email newsletter. The shop also sells a few accessories and souvenirs, and not to mention, CHEESE HATS! I always wanted to buy one, although expensive at 20$, it's still worth the memories. TIP: If you check in on yelp, you get a 10% discount on your entire purchase. If you also grab one of their cards, you get another 10% off on your next purchase. This place is a MUST visit if you are ever in the Milwaukee area.

Yelp
A dream for any cheese lover. Make sure to try the samples and pick up a pack of cheese curds. The prices are fair for what you're getting, the variety cannot be beat, and of you got $40 worth of merchandise you got a cool cheese yellow carrying bag. They defiantly go the extra mile by telling you how long a packet of cheese will last while you explore downtown - I think they had a chart which was kinda cute. Staff was very friendly, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic - I can tell they are treated well by their management. My recommendation is the smoked cheddar.
google avatar

Faye I.

Yelp
My cheese heaven! This place has a great selection of cheeses and lots you can sample from. It wasn't as big as I thought it was going to be, but it has enough of a selection. I grabbed some cinnamon cranberry cheese, cheese curds, and gjetost. I sampled some sweet brown gjetost cheese, which has a combination of goats milk and cows milk. After you're done cheese shopping, you can mosy on over next door to the Uber Tap Room. You can actually enter the tap room from the cheese store.

Yelp
CHEESY AF, and oh so GOUDA! Never have I ever been into a place that had this many samples of delicious cheeses. Staff was super friendly and helpful. If you spend XX amount they give you a nice little Cheese Mart tote bag to take home. My favorite was the horseradish Havarti with Chive....I'm salivating thinking about it. TIP: Usinger's sausages are next door. #RefereEats "I call it like I eat it."

Yelp
A great stop for all things cheesy along the river in downtown Milwaukee. To be honest, the only reason we stopped in is that it was 95 degrees and humid and after strolling along the river for an hour we wanted a respite from the heat. Nevertheless, this is a great store with dozens of variety of cheeses, most from Wisconsin although they also have some international cheeses too. The really great thing is that they have dozens of cheeses cut into tiny cubes so you can try before you buy. In addition to cheese, they also sell other local products like usingers sausage and the iconic cheese head hats. If you enjoy cheese and want to try a variety of flavors to expand your knowledge, then this is the place for you in downtown Milwaukee.
google avatar

Audrey G.

Yelp
Plus Side: Great place to bring out of town guests. They do gave a good variety samples to try before you buy. Bad Side: Since this location is located downtown, not everyone can make it to make purchases Parking can be troublesome during peak summer events

Yelp
Great cheese shop centrally located in downtown Milwaukee. If you are visiting Wisconsin and not able to travel a meer 2 hours to the North, to the South or to the West (any direction but East for that matter) to experience Wisconsin cheese making at any number of the factories or creameries on your own, Wisconsin Cheese Mart has got you covered. This really is a blown away store in addition to a catalog of their full line of products that they ship around the world for your Dairyland fix. The state of Wisconsin is extremely well represented in the excellent selection of cheeses they carry in addition to sausage and smoked meat products. This is mainly a representation of all things delicious from Wisconsin but you will find quite a few specialty cheeses from Europe here that are not necessarily easy to find elsewhere. Vast selection of cheeses (I would say 20 +)to sample before buying in addition to an attached brewpub where you can imbibe and enjoy a cheese plate, maybe a sausage, and maybe imbibe a bit more! If you are unable to go on a cheese pilgrimage around the state of Wisconsin on your own, I highly recommend Wisconsin Cheese Mart which has got you covered quite adequately with a friendly and knowledgeable staff, in addition to fair and reasonable pricing!

Yelp
As the saying goes "the moon is made of green cheese", Wisconsin Cheese Mart is every astronaut's dream. Universal and enduring, the greatest commonality is discovery. With over 20+ samples of cheese, space exploration pushes us to our limits to discover new cheeses from everywhere. This is an absolutely must see while here in Milwaukee! At first I was only here to check out the variety, but I found out that even as an out-of-towner from Los Angeles, the hard cheeses can last for 2-3 days unrefrigerated when it is vacuum sealed. So of course, I bought several and Airport security gave me a knowing look (a mutual love for cheese perhaps) as my luggage was flagged and inspected by security. Fabulously organized rows of cheese from Grand Cru to alcohol soaked cheese from local breweries and soft brown, caramelized Norwegian cheese make it nice and logical to browse from left to right, up and down for hours on end. A separate table is dedicated to all the samples, including a good blueberry cheese and another section is dedicated to specifically spicy cheese. I sampled about all of them and had to make the hard choice of only choosing 5 (HA!). Amazing service, good to ask for recommendations. When you think of Milwaukee, this HAS to be the cheesiest place of them all. Transactions would fare better if Apple Pay was accepted. Overall, wonderful experience!
