Amtrak Is Expanding Its Service Between Minneapolis and Chicago

"Launching May 21, this new daily train will add a second travel option between St. Paul and Chicago via Milwaukee, with afternoon departures from St. Paul and late-morning departures from Chicago. Tickets start around $41 for coach, and the entire trip takes just under seven and a half hours, following the Empire Builder stops between St. Paul and Milwaukee and the Hiawatha stops between Milwaukee and Chicago — including several Wisconsin stops such as Wisconsin Dells. Trains feature coach and business-class seating, a café car with regional items, and scenic views of the Mississippi River between St. Paul and La Crosse. Sponsored by Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois, the service is intended to expand travel choices and regional economic access, and travelers departing Chicago may benefit from faster connections thanks to recent speed increases (up to 110 mph) on nearby corridors." - Alison Fox Alison Fox Alison Fox is a Travel + Leisure contributor. 4 Scenic Amtrak Routes for Stunning Views of Fall Foliage

"As Amtrak’s Empire Builder stretches from Chicago, across all of the Upper Midwest, and into Washington state, it offers plenty of foliage-centric destinations to choose from. Just under a four-hour ride from Chicago is a perfect locale for soaking in autumn’s glory: Wisconsin Dells. Head to Dells of the Wisconsin River State Natural Area for views of trees in their seasonal finery among numerous pines and set against Cambrian sandstone cliffs, canyons, and unique rock formations. Back in the center of town, a leisurely stroll along the scenic River Walk offers a chance to behold the bursts of color while weaving your way along the water. Unwind from all that hiking at one of the area’s local breweries— Sundara Inn & Spa, one of the first destination spas in the Midwest with treatments like Reiki and CBD massages."

I went there to get a printed schedule of train runs because those online were of little value. I didn't find any but I got familiar with the train station. It was decently kept/maintained. There were even restrooms. There was a little car parking but the related information was confusing and incomplete. It look like you could get an approval to park a car for a short or a long period. I wonder how long is short and short is long. I was surprised there were restrictions on carry-on luggage (size, weight, and number). But anyway, I took many pictures hoping some may help eventual passangers like me.

A new perspective passing through Wiscons Della from Amtrak. Our stop was very brief.

Fun place! The train station wasn’t big enough for our group of 96!

***update July 2024 - i was at this station from 2-2:45 and the building was open no matter what the website said***. Review changed accordingly. According to Amtrak's website, this Amtrak station has an indoor waiting room that is open daily from 11am- 1:00 pm and again from 4:45pm-6:45pm. I confirmed this with an Amtrak employee at the 800#. My train arrives at 12:58 pm (I get a possible 2 minutes to get off the train and use the waiting room to wait for my ride). Even worse, my departure time is 2:33pm for which I need to arrive 30 minutes ahead. This is Wisconsin, known to have wind chills that run significantly below zero (not to mention rain, snow, wind). I'm glad I'm traveling in the summer. Why have an indoor waiting room with hours that do not coincide with the train schedule times?

This has been the absolute worse Amtrak experience. I paid for train tickets and my train was 5plus hours behind. Amtrak offered to give bus transportation which was also Late! I did not receive any discounts or refunds for this inconvenience and was extremely uncomfortable! Absolutely my last time traveling using Amtrak

Nice train station. Even if it's unstaffed, it's clean, cozy, and you can wait inside for the train. Sometimes it happens for the train to be really delayed (once was 9 hours). There are only 2 trains per day, but you can really get far with them.

For a town this size, this station is conveniently located and is comfortable and clean. Parking is free and there is plenty to do nearby while waiting for the train.
