The Wharf Loses Its Matchbox Pizza But Gains a Gastropub | Eater DC

Love this place! 🍕 Hidden in the hills with a charming old Western vibe—feels like a secret spot in the wild, wild west 🤠🌄. Fast, friendly service from a great group of young workers. Fresh-made everything! The meat lover’s pizza was so good, I had 2 slices (no guilt 😋), and the salad? Gone in seconds. Great coffee too—fresh and bold ☕️. Patio is cute, peaceful & dog-friendly! 🐾💙🇺🇸

They were pretty busy even at 3 in the afternoon, but counter service was solid. After they bring your food, they aren't coming back. The pizza is amazing. We got pepperoni and spicy sausage and the toppings were super fresh. Only downside is it can be greasy. We used many napkins so if you were planning on wiping on your pants think again. Restraunt is cozy and was good for our date and from the look large friend groups and parties. I definitely will come again.

My experience was very great at Wise Guys. I love the environment and the food is quite delicious. I only had one complaint; mostly because I had ordered at a very busy time; I had ordered a pizza cookie and it took like half an hour before I finally got it, although it was still very enjoyable.

Google
Great beers and great food. I came in to pick up some pizzas and wings that I had ordered over the phone for pickup. I think I sat there for about 15 minutes while my food got cold before I asked again about it and they gave it to me cold. The average age of the staff was about 20 seemingly and they weren't paying attention or strivng for good service

Google
We came here with some friends who are regulars, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. The pizza was fantastic with a crispy crust, great sauce, and perfectly cooked. But what really blew us away were the garlic knots and especially the goat cheese marinara… seriously next level! You can tell everything is made fresh and with care. If you’re anywhere nearby, definitely stop in for an authentic American pizzeria experience. Great food, laid-back vibe, and friendly service, Wise Guy’s doesn’t miss

Google
Have been coming here for years and hands down best pizza in California. Crust is crispy and thin. Ingredients are fresh and top quality. The garlic knots are stupid addictive and can get you hooked. Strongly recommend you give them a try. You pay for quality and you get it from the service to the food.

Awesome pizza place in Orange Hills. Gets busy so get your order in early!

Yelp
Best pizza in town. In my opinion! I always call for a pick up order sometimes while I wait I'll have a beer on tap. It's nice at the ranch market is right next-door. Great service.

Yelp
So dissatisfied tonight. waited for food for an hour after being told by three servers that food was only 7 mins away. Was not busy...but apparently they were filling pick up orders in front of ours. We could see them lined up. My pizza crust was burnt one I received it...very dissatisfied.

Yelp
Great family deal with a large delicious one topping pizza (great sauce and tasty crust!), garlic (or cinnamon) knots, salad, 2-liter soda, and ice cream (including the choice of spumoni). It was awesome!

Yelp
A group of five of us arrived around 4:45 PM on Sunday, 12/7/25. There was no hostess or staff member greeting guests, so we just seated ourselves at a table. Since it was early, the restaurant was not busy, just a couple of tables outside and a few guests sitting at the bar. Although two bartenders looked in our direction, no one approached us or made any effort to send someone over. After several minutes without so much as an acknowledgment (despite multiple high school kids standing around chit chatting in the kitchen area) we ultimately decided to get up and leave. Ended up walking over to Da Bianca across the parking lot.

Yelp
The pizza here is some of the best in the area. All their other menu items are also high quality. It's more expensive, but typically worth it. Service has always been great for us. It blends in with the rest of the strip mall, but it's worth finding. Check it out if you are in the area.

Yelp
First, the staff members who were working that day were incredibly helpful, can't say enough about how good the service was. We had 3 pizzas, wings and lasagna, all were 5 STARS. First time there and we will be back.

Yelp
Servers are awesome - friendly and attentive. Food is great. They have more than just pizza, and it's all good. Rotating taps at the bar. It keeps me coming back.

Yelp
Popped in for lunch, what a pleasant surprise! First and foremost, it's a pizza place - you place your order at the counter, pay, then they bring it to your table. We placed our order, walked around the corner to find a table and then realized there's a full on BAR in the adjacent room! Overall it's a classic Italian pizzeria, sports bar atmosphere - but what you need to know is the pizza is GOOD. I had the personal meat lovers on thin crust and it was excellent. We'll be back the next time we're in town.

Yelp
I eat here when I come down to see my sister. I look forward to the amazing food, great atmosphere and an amazing staff that works really hard. Kudos to you all who make it happen. The beer Selection is really well done. Something for everyone.

Yelp
The redeeming thing about tonight is the company of friends I was with and that the manager refunded a portion of our money because they forgot to give us our order of chicken wings. Apparently, there was a misunderstanding because they saw two orders of wings on the table (that belonged to our two friends) and only served us our garlic knots without our order of wings. They did not check or collect the numbers assigned to the separate orders and just assumed we received all the wings we had ordered. Our friends waited patiently for our food to arrive before starting to eat, but it took so long that their two orders of wings were cold after they finally brought out ours. The wings were just okay in my opinion - hot and charred when they did finally arrived. The manager politely apologized for the hour we were waiting and refunded us for the wings. She asked us if we needed ranch and we said yes, but the dressing never came, so we ended up using our friends' ranch. The garlic knots were definitely better than the wings, but be aware they were the size of pretzel bites. The restaurant was noticably busy tonight with a lot of dine-in and take-out orders and inexperienced staff members contributed to our less than great experience. If you prefer a quieter meal, I don't suggest trying the restaurant on a busy weekend or during a television sports event.

Yelp
We had 4 adults and all loved the food and the blood orange beer. Atmosphere is spot on, food is fabulous and staff is always friendly. Shout out to Max who helped us out and made our evening that much better!!! Thank you Max!!

Yelp
We ordered to go order on the phone to this place on Sunday 11/30 it's been awhile since we ate here. We ordered the family pack I was quoted $35 comes with large pizza one free topping and I added one topping, salad, 2 liter of soda, half a pint of ice cream & garlic knots Total comes out $42 some cents. I asked the cashier why is so much he said the taxes. I asked how much the family pack he said $39 it's different from what I was quoted on the phone. I'm not very happy with the food the mushrooms topping looks old it's dark brown almost black color is not fresh and it didn't taste fresh at all and the salad is not fresh either some of the lettuce has brown edges you can tell it isn't fresh. Who knows how long it's been sitting there. I was afraid to eat it. I'm very disappointed with my food I now remembered why I don't but my pizza here anymore. I don't recommend this place to anyone.

Yelp
We love Wise Guys. When friends come to town it's always a required visit to share our favorite local pizza spot with others. My Hot Honey with extra pepperoni, might be perfection! For years this was our Sunday night date spot. We had Wise Guys cater our wedding reception. We are truly your biggest fans and supporters. We love your friendly staff, great pizza, and solid beer selection. Some evenings I get a craving and go by myself to have a couple pints while I wait for a to-go pizza. Or after a bike ride we like to get a pitcher or two and a pizza. Of course most restaurant prices have crept up since covid times. I get that. For the most part I'm happy to pay a premium to help keep our favorite pizza place in business so they can afford to take care of their amazing staff. But $12 beer is where I draw the line. When pint prices jumped to $9 we started to realize our bill was getting awful expensive. We would still try to visit once a week or so but no longer could we justify 2+ visits a week. And when we do go we usually just have 1 beer instead of 2-3 beers. Now with our usual beers peaking at $12 a pint or $30 for a pitcher (~7% west coast not a 13% stout or anything) I'm considering dropping to zero beers per visit. I just can't possibly justify vegas prices at a local pizza place. I'll have a root beer next time. I love you guys and can't even bring myself to leave a less than 5 star review. But I promise you this is a bad marketing decision that will result in far fewer beers sold, but more importantly this will erode loyal guest frequency, and overall create negative sentiment and a depleted value proposition.

Yelp
Cold beads of sweat run down my face as my eyes start to crack open to the morning sunlight. Was it a bad dream that caused the perspiration of anxiety or something else? I take a moment to not only recollect but to be honest with myself. Once that was accomplished I realized the anxiety and in actuality the sadness was due to the fleeting nature of time and the sad nostalgia it brought forth to the mind. What can one do? The normal options raced through my brain; drugs, sex, endless hours of watching Seinfeld. But I said "No." What I needed was a trip down to my childhood. I needed a pizza parlor like the one I used to go to as a child after basketball games. Off I went to Wiseguys Pizzeria. It had the familiar symptoms of the pizzeria parlor from my childhood. It was a hot summer day and inside was hot as well. Air conditioning was either lazy or not present. The pizza was hot, cheesy and made you feel like your little league team had just won the game. I chugged down a cold beer and the remedy was found. Nostalgic heroin coupled with a high percentage beer.... maybe 4 high percentage beers and I was back! I was again part of the numbed out population ready to sell my soul to my employer on Monday. So in closing. Go to Wiseguys... or don't go to Wiseguys. Stay curious my friends.

Yelp
Tucked into a strip mall-style center with other restaurants, a store, a liquor shop, and a nearby coffee spot, Wise Guys Pizzeria might not stand out at first glance--but don't let that fool you. Parking is abundant, though it seems like parking within the lines is a lost art for many patrons. Still, it's worth navigating the lot for what awaits inside. Wise Guys nails that dark, slightly divey, old-school New York Italian restaurant vibe in all the best ways. You walk up to the counter to place your order--just like the classic pizzerias from the '70s--then grab a seat at a black-and-white vinyl tablecloth-covered table, stick your plastic number into the little tag holder, and wait for your food. The service is prompt and friendly, and the food shows up hot and fast. I went with Papa's Pepperoni Pizza Bread and Italian Meatball Sliders for lunch. Both were excellent--rich, hearty, and seriously filling. This place is a true throwback to every pizza joint I remember growing up with in Southern California. High marks all around!

Yelp
Omg, the Milan Pizza is incredible. Spice sweet sausage, caramelized onions, mushrooms on thick crust. I have had many pizza in the place , this is my Favorite.

Yelp
Some of the best pizza in OC! The Godfather Supreme is our go-to! Don't forget a side their ranch - they only give two sides of ranch with your pizza, so if you are a ranch lover like me, I would recommend ordering their large side of ranch for a few extra bucks so you don't miss out! I love grabbing a seat at the bar with a pizza and a beer when there's a good game on, but it does get packed so we usually grab takeout. The pizza is on the pricier side, but the quality is truly great. Just a heads-up, wait times for pickup can be long during peak hours so plan ahead. Worth it every time!

Lauren D.

Yelp
My favorite pizza place of 10+ years! I love their pizza, pasta, salad, bread, and everything else on the menu!
google avatar

Laura L.

Yelp
We have a new favorite pizza place! Crust was fresh and crispy on the bottom, sauce tasted like fresh tomatoes, toppings were generous and tasty! Definitely will be ordering again soon!
google avatar

Alisha O.

Yelp
This is my new favorite pizza place! My BF and I found it one date night and we will be returning! The service was great and the pizza was delicious! The flavor was mind blowing, and this is my first time finding a white sauce based pizza that I like. We had the Rocky Graciano and the pesto twists. So bomb!
google avatar

Yelp
My favorite pizza place. And the best friendliest people too. Stopped by to get a couple pizzas to take to my brothers down in Mission Viejo. But we all wanted Wise Guys.

Yelp
Came in on a Friday around 4pm and it was PACKED but we were able to snag seats at the bar area. The food: GOOD! We tried the garlic knots and killed them before our pizza came out. We got the large order because with the price difference it made the most sense. Our pizza was a pepperoni with bacon. Simple but so good. My bf had a calzone with all kinds of veggies and he was very happy with his order. Pizza Cookie with Vanilla ice cream to go: Cookie was burnt- probably wouldn't try that again. Service: our server was kinda lame. Young guy with longish hair. He had a "I don't want to be here" attitude with us and everyone else who would approach him for drinks. Anyone else who wasn't our server had a good outgoing attitude.
google avatar

Mathew G.

Yelp
I have mixed feelings about this place. Is this restaurant super cool looking inside? Absolutely! Could this make a great date night? Also yes. The entire interior is so wonderful and has such a warm vibe. The staff is so incredible and super friendly! So why the lower rating? Well a few reasons. Firstly, the amount of time it took to make my pizza. I walked in an ordered. I was told it was going to be 30-40 minutes for a pizza. The restaurant wasn't crowded and that is a wildly high time for just a simple pizza. Secondly, the taste and quality of the pizza. Is this a bad pizza? No. However will it blow you away? Also no. Go here if you want a mediocre pizza but amazing restaurant vibes. The pizza is also VERY heavy. I did learn after I ordered that they have a thin crust pizza. I do want to go back to try that version to see if I will like it better. Overall I'd go back for a fun date night and just to enjoy the vibes of this restaurant.

Yelp
Love the food here. Never disappointed and always consistently yummy. I love the goat cheese with hot honey and pepperoni!

Marcie D.

Yelp
We have not been back to wise guys in a few years. They lost us a while back . However we decided to give them a try again and we were very happy with the pizza we ordered. It was exactly how we ordered it and was very good.

Yelp
Although I'm a millennial I'll use a Gen Z phrase and describe my experience as "mid" We've ventured to this location a few times after a trip to Irvine railroad. It's about five minutes away and a good option if you don't want the fries, burger and quesadilla options at the park. It tends to be pretty busy every time we go but there's the option for takeout or dine in which is nice. As far as ambiance is concerned it kind of reminds me of a sports bar meets mom and pop pizza parlor. There are TVs, bench seating, a bar and seating outside Service is okay, they bring your pizza and drinks out which is nice. Nothing spectacular but also not complaining since it's not a formal sit down joint. Now onto food...my family has enjoyed the pizza on a few occasions, plenty of options for preselected choices (vegetarian, meaty, white sauce, red sauce, you name it). You also have the option to pay per topping. If memory serves me right, prices are a little steep per topping ($2.50 I think?) They do offer a gluten free option which is where I need to shift directions of this review. I do not have a gluten allergy, but an intolerance to it and my autoimmune disorder can flare up when consuming gluten. We paid for the gluten free crust, and was brought out a standard pizza on a standard crust. I was a little surprised but brought it up to the man who took my order and he took it back to the kitchen. I wondered about the possibility of someone who had an allergy not noticing and just trusting the crust was cauliflower as advertised and what outcomes could have presented themselves. In general wait times can be long for pizza, averaging about 30 mins. We waited said 30-35 minutes for the two pizzas, and then after this snafu was told it'd be another ten minutes. Fine, whatever. But I ended up waiting another close to 20 minutes for my remake. And I have included photos of what I waited nearly an hour to eat. The pizza was burned. Literally. And it was still brought out for my consumption. I was honestly taken aback like "wow, they're comfortable serving this?". It honestly would have went way better if they acknowledged it and said you know, we are sorry for the inconvenience and this does not meet our standards and offered something else. Maybe it was an off day but my husband was also quite disappointed in his pizza. Kids were happy though! PS I'll end this by emphasizing that collectively this experience was mid. Pizza was definitely the opposite of bussin'
google avatar

Eric R.

Yelp
So good, I've been coming here for years. Such fresh food. Pizza is great, lasagna is next level, rotating beers represent the best of California. Highly recommend. We come here with the kids all the time. The staff is so nice- despite being absolutely slammed. Great local spot.

Yelp
I'm not sure if my expectations were too high or I just had a bad experience but Wise Guys did not provide the experience we were hoping for. We checked this location out as a possible event space for a future party, we came in on a Saturday night and it was packed.. I mean PACKED. This is a counter service pizza parlor, you order from a rather large menu and receive a number to place on your table. The tables are placed so close together you could have a conversation with the parties dining around you. This location seems very small for the number of people it serves. They set up tables outside if you choose to dine out there, but the pizza parlor is located inside of a strip mall so you're basically sitting in the parking lot. The pizza joint is clearly popular with locals in the Orange Hills, there were older couples on date night, friends grabbing a beer, and lots of families. It was extremely loud and people were standing all over the place either waiting for a table to clear so they could swoop in or waiting for their To Go order. The restaurant appears older, like they haven't changed much since the early 2000's, which is fine, but the cleanliness was questionable (especially their restrooms) There is bar seating and service, but not very much, maybe 7-8 seats max. I would say this is a casual place to dine with a more bar like vibe, that is family friendly.. The pizza was also nothing to write home about, the dough was thick, pizza was extremely greasy, toppings were basic, prices were high for the quality of food that you are getting.
google avatar

Dan W.

Yelp
We went to Wise guys pizzeria again for some great food. The service here is something they are so busy but they keep up on it. The place has a lot of seating inside and out and even a little bar if you want something like that to eat it or drink at. The pizza here is always top quality and we love the salads. Great job. Keep it up guys!!

Elpidio M.

Yelp
I loved this place service and food is great ... Real pizza the wings we ordered were also delicious my kids are picky Wingstop eating kids and they actually liked the wings here. Coming back for sure
google avatar

Steve R.

Yelp
Great family place and the best pizza in the area ( my opinion). Always a friendly helpful staff!

Saul B.

Yelp
Great food, beer and gelato. It is family friendly. We go there often with friends. The outside tables is a good location to socialize.
google avatar

Elizabeth V.

Yelp
We had lunch here and ordered pizza and salad. The food was delicious and the staff was attentive. It seems like a fun place for pizza.

Mallorie V.

Yelp
We are rarely on this side of town but when we are we love to stop at wise guys. Service is always fast and friendly, the pizza is delicious!!! The crust is perfectly crisp and soft and chewy. I love their queen margherita but even just a plain cheese is delicious! My little guy loves the spaghetti marinara, and never skips his scoop of ice cream (comes with the kids meal!). They have plenty of TVs if you are looking to watch a game. We will continue to come when nearby!
google avatar

Cynthia S.

Yelp
Really good pizza! Not soggy, not dry, perfect topping ratio with cheese and sauce. The wings were meh but it's a pizza store, so their rating doesn't count.

robert ..

Yelp
Overall we'd recommend WiseGuys, food quality is very good. But when ot comes to pricing we still go to Valentinos..
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent pizza! Everytime i go to Irvine regional park, I always stop by and pick up a pie! 8/10
google avatar

Yelp
Best pizza, ever!!! This hidden gem in OC is tucked away in the hills of Orange. Family owned with amazing recipes! Their mouth watering hot wings will shock you with the amount of flavor and perfectly balanced heat. Their homemade minestrone soup is perfect for the colder weather, and super filling. The unbelievably delicious pizzas are the perfect amount of dough/toppings. The Don is my favorite, and I'm not a fan of sausage anywhere else! I can eat that pizza weekly! (Guilty) I've had a variety of their pizzas from veggie to chicken Gorgonzola... you can not go wrong. The pastas that I've had are top notch, just as good as any fine dining Italian restaurant. The staff is friendly, owners are extremely welcoming, and the inside is large with a packed bar at all times. Definitely try this place!
google avatar

Kim G.

Yelp
The BEST pizza in the OC. We love their specialty pizzas!! Highly recommend the Rocky Graziano
google avatar

Oscar F.

Yelp
Great quality food, ambience, and service! The pesto ravioli was amazing, as was the cheese pizza!
google avatar

Louie M.

Yelp
I usually get a consistently good pizza from Wise Guys. Ordered the Milan both sweet and hot Italian sausage sauté onions and mushrooms mozzarella red sauce. Fair amount of each ingredient chunky chopped mushroom, slices of sweet onion crumbled sausage, great pull on the cheese and chewy crisp crust. Phoned in order for pickup I asked for the pizza to be well done and was told no problem. Upon arrival I am shown the pizza and it's prepared nicely but not well done. Wise Guys is your classic family ambiance with a sizable bar for adults. I did fire my oven up to 450 through the pizza on a screen and toasted to my liking. $24 out the door made two meals out of the eight slice medium pie
google avatar

Jacy O.

Yelp
Sooooooo GOOD!! Crispy crust - great marina - quality toppings we loved it ! Wish we lived closer so we could eat here all the time :)
google avatar

Julia Z.

Yelp
Great, old-school, classic pizza. Service is quick, pizza is delicious! Nice beer list. Will be coming back to try other pizzas, sandwiches, and apps for sure.
google avatar

Yelp
I always love coming to Wise Guys! The pizza is super delicious and they have amazing appetizers. The staff is incredibly nice and polite. They make the experience super fun & it feels like being at home.
google avatar

Yelp
Nice place with good food, nice people, nice casual ambiance and the prices were very reasonable. Yesterday was my first time there and now I know I'll go back for more. Try the 5 cheese pizza.
google avatar

Dave S.

Yelp
Consistently good pizza. Only negative is parents who don't watch their kids. Not cute. Annoying.
google avatar

Jeremy S.

Yelp
Greta pizza place. Reminds me of the old school pizza joint when I was younger. Calzones and pizza are great. Their pizza sauce is one of my favorites around.

Daniel F.

Yelp
Bad crust, bad service, pretty bad all around. Skip this spot and go to the Dominoes next door.
