Great Jewish Food Options in SF and the East Bay | Eater SF

"Evan Bloom’s new-school 24th Street Jewish delicatessen has spawned a growing bagel empire that’s now operating in the Fillmore, Hayes Valley, and the East Bay. Order a dozen bagels with schmear or a bodega egg and cheese will do just fine, thanks." - Eater Staff

26 of the Best Counter Service Spots in San Francisco | Eater SF

"After five years of being nearly the only SF supplier of Jewish food, Wise Sons has finally added bagels to its repertoire. Its bagelry on Fillmore offers several sandwiches, from a traditional lox and cream cheese to a vegetable variety with squash steak, hummus, housemade pickled red onions, and a market green mix, plus there’s Intelligentsia coffee." - Caleb Pershan

Google
The best bagel on the west coast. Love that they have vegan cream cheese, I only wish they put more on there.

Google
Great spot! I was in the area looking for a place to sit down and enjoy a lunch, which wasn’t easy to find. This place had tasty food, a pleasant atmosphere, and a friendly, attentive staff.

Google
I went for breakfast. The portions are large, the breakfast is delicious, fresh and tasty. Although I liked one type of coffee, it was delicious! 👍 It was not noisy, comfortable! The scrambled eggs turned out very tasty, not like at home, the taste was good. I liked the chicken sausages, not spicy, everything in moderation! I'll definitely come back

Google
Our first stop on our first day in SF and the sandwiches were so good, we made a total of 3 visits throughout our trip. It’s the genuine article!

Google
Nice spot and selection of food. It's a bit small, and hard to find a party for large parties.

Google
We have to have their Reubens every time we come to the city. They have a couple of different kinds whether or not you want the corned beef or the pastrami Reuben either one is delicious, these sandwiches will keep you coming back for more because they can't be beat. There is nice window seating so you could watch the hustle and bustle of the city as you scarf down your choice of deliciousness. Highly recommend

Google
Breakfast was hard to find within a short distance from our hotel other than the hotel’s buffet (not a fan of all you can eat). Found this gem and was not disappointed. I had the sesame bagel with salmon smear and it was divine! I wish there was a Wise Sons back home. Hubby got the server recommended breakfast burrito and was not disappointed. Fully stuffed with a delicious salsa verde on the side. Loved looking at all of the photos on the wall, too.

Just stopped by here for the first time this week and I'm very happy I did! I love bagels and these had the perfect amount of toppings, and cream cheese. The bagel itself was really good, crunchy and soft... so fresh! Better than what I had in NYC. The best bagel I've had in a long time, I'm looking forward to going back!

Yelp
WOW! The bagels here were delicious! My colleague brought a box of bodega bagels to share with the team! It was still very warm when I tried it! The bagel was moist with melted American cheese all over the scrambled eggs. What made it taste even better was their garlic aioli sauce on the toasted bagel! Super well-balanced and tasty breakfast bagel! I saved half the bagel for my kids and husband to try and they all loved it! It was not warm anymore but the flavor was still there. My toddler requested for more so I ended up ordering the same bagels the next day. Luckily, it was only a few blocks away from my workplace. The bodega bagel cost $9.55 each. I ordered through DoorDash pick up in case it was busy so I had enough time during my lunch break. Just as expected, the bagels were yummy! The first taste reminded me of a New York bagel where I was mind-blown at how good it was. It may not be a New York bagel since I heard their water was different, but it was the best bagel I had in the city and in the Bay Area! The place was located right at the center of Fillmore across the plaza. Lots of metered parking, but in general, that area was hard to find parking. The bagel spot was large and modern. At first, it felt weird since all the male workers working there just stared at me when I walked in without any greeting so it made me feel out of place. However, the lady server walked up to me when she realized I was the one who ordered for pick up. She was very friendly! Overall, I recommend trying the bagels here! There were lots of locations for Wise Sons Jewish Deli in the city. Next time, I would come back to try the other bagels!

Yelp
Stopped in today for a corned beef sandwich. It was warm, lean and tasty, just like I like it. I took the trouble to tell them my preference, and they accommodated. The rye bread was si fresh and delicious. It was just perfect. It was really cold in the store and they had the door open so I changed my order to takeout. No problem, they were very accommodating. Cole slaw was simple and classic.

Yelp
Dense and chewy bagels and delicious spreads that will satisfy your bagel craving! We visited their pop up location at the Ferry Farmers Market this past Saturday. Service was friendly and efficient. My husband and I split the plain bagel with scallion schmear and savored each bite as we enjoyed the perfect weather at the Ferry Plaza. With a lot of great options at the Ferry Farmers Market, make sure to save room for a bagel!

Yelp
Amazing bagel sandwich!! I swapped for an onion bagel and thoroughly enjoyed the chili oil they used. It's pretty comparable to some of the nyc bagels I've had as well- would definitely recommend for a quick breakfast
google avatar

Michelle K.

Yelp
I came here thinking I'd get a bagel but ended up spontaneously getting breakfast tacos and absolutely obsessing over my decision. Get the tacos !!! But, don't get the coffee !!! It's very watery.
google avatar

Yelp
Ordered a bagel and breakfast burrito to go on Sunday morning. Service was quick! Bagel was good overall and the sandwich had a good kick from the chili oil. The breakfast burrito was stuffed which we love. The potatoes were really good and it was nice to have avocado included without having it be an add on. Also, the salsa provided was stellar and provided a nice kick.

Yelp
I was in SF,CA and really wanted to eat something that you absolutely cannot get in Hawaii. After checking out Yelp, I saw it; a Jewish deli! The thought of lox and bagels drifted through my mind as I walked towards the deli. Along the way I passed Nijiya market and they had a lot of good stuff! I passed a lot of Japanese food places and even saw a nice farmers market with a bakery and delicious looking goods. When I got to the deli, you order on the iPad along with the obligatory 18% tip. I ordered an everything bagel and while I was there I saw it. The Purist, a pastrami sandwich for the connoisseur! I ordered it along with the deli potato salad since I have been seeing a lot of that on YouTube. The food came out fairly quickly and there was a table there. I took a look at the pastrami and it seemed very dry. But looks can be deceiving so I took a bite and unfortunately it was dry. I added mustard and it made it better but only a little. This sandwich was close to $18 so I was hoping for a fatty, tender, delicious pastrami but all I got was a dry sandwich. Oh well. The salad was quite tangy and although I enjoyed it, Hawai'i potato salad rules!!!!!!!!! I took the bagel home for the flight home. When I had a chance to eat the bagel, it tasted burnt. It had an acrid taste and was not pleasant. Oh well. I have to say the place had a steady stream of people so they enjoy it. Service was good and place looks nice:

Yelp
Our post-wedding WiseSons Sunday catered brunch in our home exceeded all expectations. Two assigned staff, Zane and Vincent, showed up on time, set up the entire brunch to perfection, kept everything running so smoothly, tidied up, replenished so that we could be 100% present to our 70 guests. There were probably more instances than I can name where they went above and beyond, so I will only describe one. I thought I had ordered vegan cream cheese for our handful of vegan guests, but I must have forgotten to put it in the order. They saw a few avocados in the kitchen and (this was all their idea after first offering to go out and buy some vegan cream cheese) they whipped up a guacamole for our vegan guests to spread on their bagels! We love that you provided your own waste and composting (our bins are overflowing from this past week of festivity) and that when they left the house, everything that could be stored in the fridge was stored and there was no sign they were ever even here. The kitchen was spotless! We had great Wise Sons leftovers the day after (this morning). We are thrilled that we hired Wise Sons to cater our brunch and would do it again. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I absolutely love the Wise Sons Jewish Deli. I had the Everything Bagels. They were fresh and delicious. I highly recommend buying them. If love seeds, you will absolutely love these bagels.... The Wise Sons Deli is my "go to place". The Wise Sons have various locations in The Bay Area. I rate them 5 stars for food, service and ambiance.

Yelp
Not the best location. I ordered a pastrami sandwich here a while ago and the woman taking the order said, we don't serve pork here. I blinked and thought, did I hear wrong? What?!? So random. I didn't order anything with pork... I brushed it off at the time because I was busy and in a hurry to leave. But it was such a weird vibe. I recently ordered a turkey club while at work and it was just okay. Probably won't be back at this location.

Yelp
It's wise to consume something once you've woken up from a night out in the City, and Wise Sons helped quell a bit of our hangover with their solid sandwiches. You order at the counter before receiving a number for either dine-in or to-go. I ordered an Everything Bagel with their Oatly Cream Cheese Alternative and some veggies, and it ended up being a solid breakfast for me. It's an absolute must to toast your bagel - otherwise, it is a crime against humanity. I'm happy they offer a vegan cream cheese option though it would've been great if they made an in-house schmears similar to their other ones. If I need a quick bagel fix and I'm in the area again, I won't hesitate to stop by this deli.

Yelp
The food is tasty but the prices are a bit overpriced. It is what it is. Highlights include the matzo ball soup (bonus points for how they carefully package it for takeout so it doesn't spill), the pastrami sandwiches, the cookies, and oddly enough the breakfast burrito. I think you can get better bagels at other places so unless you are coming here anyways, I would go somewhere else if that is your main purchase. I do appreciate them having a veggie cream cheese though as so few places seem to. They put the ounces of meat they use on the sandwiches on the menu and I've never bothered to mention but it definitely feels like they are getting smaller and the victim or shrinkflation inspire of the number staying the same. 3.5 stars but I keep returning so I rounded up

Yelp
I no no no I ordered in store at 9:33 and received my food at 10:01 never again poor service
google avatar

Yelp
Only been here twice and both times have gotten the pastrami bfast burrito. It's a bit pricey but very delicious. Ordering online is easy but sometimes takes a while because they're usually busy. The staff is friendly and works very hard which compliments the rustic feel of the small establishment.
google avatar

Yelp
I've ordered a few breakfast sandwiches here and a coffeenor two. Wait time is always below 10 minutes on the weekend mornings I visit. Add hot sauce and pepper to your eggs for a memorable taste! Wow! Wise sons does not disappoint. I likes the sandwiches. Coffee is less bitter than starbucks. Try it out. My recommendation is to sit on the ledge with the stools by the window wall.
google avatar

Gloria W.

Yelp
One of my favorite lox bagels! I got it on an onion bagel and thought it was so good. Service was super fast and the shop was relatively packed around lunch time. Will definitely be back!

Mark G.

Yelp
Great food and great service. I'm from NYC and it was great to find delicious bagels in San Fran.
google avatar

Ruthanna H.

Yelp
Best breakfast tacos in the city! Crispy pastrami gives bacon a run for its money. Kudos to plentiful gluten free options.
google avatar

Yelp
It's Something else rude dismissive customer service that's what you get nowadays that's your type of customer service, rude and dismissive So difficult to write a positive review " 5 star " about many establishments terrible attitudes will ruin any meal regardless of its taste or quality

Yelp
Food: 2/5 Everything bagel with scallion cream cheese bagel was dry and cold. The scallion cream is good however since the bagel is cold it didn't melt when taking bites Service: 3/5 OK took and handed us order Ambiance: 4/5 pretty cozy with plenty of seats in the early morning. Glad this place is open early for morning birds! Wouldn't recommend this place if you're looking for a nice bagel shop, it's good for a quick stop by since everything else nearby is closed at the early early hours.
google avatar

Neal M.

Yelp
Best bagel sandwich in SF!!! The bagel itself is excellent which is crucial. Great blend of "everything " coating.
google avatar

Christine F.

Yelp
Solid experience at Wise Sons. Had to wait a bit to order and then wait a bit to receive our food. I liked the style of the place and there was enough to look at while we waited. The bagel sandwiches were a decent size each. I thought there was too much egg in the one I ordered but that might've been to compensate that it was the only protein in the sandwich before I added the crunchy pastrami, which was not worth the extra $3. My partner had the Yosemite, which looked like a better choice. Can't wait to come back to try out other options.
google avatar

Breanna D.

Yelp
Delicious is all I can say. Actually, that's not true. There's so much adjectives I can use but you get the point. Their house made lemonade is what a true lemonade should taste like. So refreshing in the SF heat! For $6 it's worth coming back. Their breakfast taco and bodega bagel sandwich is also a fave and worth the try. Bit on the higher end but you get what you pay for. Service was great and everyone is super nice!

Yelp
Great service and wonderful atmosphere part of the Jewish community Center. My everything bagel with scallion smear was delicious.

Claudia R.

Yelp
I had the worse tuna melt in my life , first the just put two mini half slices of cheese , one the worse American cheese and another tiny small piece of white cheese ,I don't know what it was because ,no flavor , the worse part is a TUNA MELT and is REALLY COLD and unmelted it was close to 3:00 pm and they probably turn off the kitchen because another lady was complaining that her soup was cold , why WISE SONS IS popular , THE WORSE TUNA MELT , ACTUALLY I CAN'T CALL THAT MELT .LOL ....FILLMORE LOCATION

Yelp
It is a Jewish deli. That's good. Nothing outstanding, just solid, but it's an increasingly rare niche.
google avatar

Jem T.

Yelp
A GO TO whenever I'm in the neighborhood. Their bagels are so good! Indoor dining has been open for awhile and the service is pretty quick. They do sell out, so the earlier you get there the better. I placed an order for two bagels in the shop and probably waited like 5 minutes for it to be ready. Parking can be tough, but definitely worth it. Tip: get your bagel toasted. The extra crunch and warmness really makes all the difference.

Donn ..

Yelp
Nice selection and delicious bagels. A little pricey though. Still a nice quick breakfast for my wife and I.
google avatar

Stephanie M.

Yelp
Expensive. Even more expensive if you're gluten free. It's good but not that good. I think we paid $20 for a gluten free bagel sandwich with lox, etc.
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
I went there for breakfast and had the most amazing breakfast burrito (it comes with either pastrami or mushrooms; I opted for mushrooms). Everyone was nice and friendly. My coffee came out quick, but it did take a while to get the burrito, but I was in no rush. It was SO TASTY. It was seriously one of the yummiest breakfast burritos I've had in a while. Definitely would go back.

William M.

Yelp
Overpriced for what it is. $17 for a salmon bagel? Seriously? And then $7 for an OJ. Never going back that's for sure.
google avatar

Yondome C.

Yelp
I work in the neighborhood now so going to this place is a convenience but I love the service. I love the people they are so awesome. The food is so great I get a breakfast burrito vegetarian and I love the bagels. I love coming here on the weekends an early morning, if you like great food, great people please come to this place you will not regret it
google avatar

Mandy Z.

Yelp
Great place to get delicious bagel sandwiches! I also got the iced coffee, and I'd probably pass on getting it again, as it tasted pretty watered down and bitter to me. Would definitely come back for the bagels though! I tried the Crunchy Spice bagel sandwich, but all the other sandwiches sounded like wonderful options too. I ordered takeout from here over the weekend, and when I went to pick up my order, the place was pretty filled with people despite it being earlier in the morning. I saw some people doing work too, so it definitely looks like a good cafe option to get some work done. The store itself is relatively small and cozy, but there is plenty of seating.
google avatar

Sasha J.

Yelp
This place is incredible!!!! Food 10/10, coffee 10/10, and service 10/10! Went to brunch with a friend and it hit the spot!!!!

Ishmail Z.

Yelp
This is the worst place I have ever visited. Terrible customer service. I ordered to meals and politely waited for a table for two. The lady sitting at table swoops in and takes my table. Manager demands me to share a two seat table with third stranger. It's not even enough room at the table for that many plates. She says that she cannot control the customers and that it's only a casual eatery. I understand but what does the lady who already has a table taking my table have to do with that. The craziness is next level. I traveled a long distance to try the food. Never again. I should have check review and now understand why it has a 3.9
google avatar

Amy C.

Yelp
I love picking up their bagels and spreads from the store so I decided to come pick up an order from the store. The drip coffee is actually really good, piping hot perfect for the mornings. I also love how they have a little bar for milk and sugar on the side, with oat milk as an option for no extra charge! Latkes we crispy and comes with a side of sour cream and applesauce. All is fine until the bagel itself. I ordered a lox everything bagel and was a bit disappointed as to how tough the bagel was. It was clearly toasted but it was so difficult to bite into, I felt like I was going to break off a tooth as I ripped a piece off. I think I'll be back for the coffee but I'll toast the bagels myself at home.

Anne S.

Yelp
I'm from the east coast and know deli. This isn't deli. It is a sad substitute. You have to slice the corned beef, pastrami, whatever, on a slicer and paper thin. Otherwise it's like eating a shoe. And you certainly can't gnaw through it on a sandwich. WHEN will San Francisco learn. I just give up.

Katie T.

Yelp
We ordered breakfast to go. It was delicious, my husband had the lox and potato pancake, my daughter and I shared the potato pancake hash. Just delicious.
google avatar

Daniel M.

Yelp
Great Rubin! The bread was fantastic and the order came out quick. The ingredients were fresh and made me feel like I was in New York. Please eat here!
google avatar

Samantha B.

Yelp
wise son have the best bagels, I ate the Popeye, that bagel was so soft still crispy around the edges, so fresh tasting I love it. Thank you so much.
google avatar

Kalina K.

Yelp
I really love this place. The staff are really nice. I put 4 stars because tbh, it's expensive. Especially if you're adding "extra." But this is my go to, Crunchy Spice on Biaily, no egg, add cream cheese and crispy pastrami. It really is *chefs kiss* I mean $13 is OKAYY... but definitely only come here on payday LOL.
google avatar

Corinne R.

Yelp
I live right next to this spot so I was excited to try it. We ordered the everything bagel with the salmon cream cheese and the cinnamon raisin bagel with regular cream cheese. The salmon cream cheese was awesome and had chunks of lox in it. Consistent with a lot of the other reviews, the bagels were a little dense and maybe could have tasted fresher. They had good flavor though and the everything bagel was covered entirely in seeds which was nice. I'm excited to come back and try one of their sandwiches next time.
google avatar

G D.

Yelp
We had a craving for matzo ball soup and there are very few places that you can get good Jewish deli food in SF but Wise Sons seems to have cornered the market here. So we ordered a couple from this location and boy were we in for a surprise. The matzo ball itself had the strangest mealy texture, it was dense and and also a weird brownish color. We wondered what they used for the matzo as we had never seen this kind before. The broth itself had no discerning chicken flavor..not even salt. There were a few dry chicken pieces, thin carrot slices and a few sprigs of dill to top it off. It was not matzo ball soup and not appetizing. If you are looking for an authentic bowl look elsewhere.
google avatar

Angela W.

Yelp
The guy at the cashier stand was rude and unprofessional, and for a pick up order! Seems to me it had something to do with my race.
google avatar

Barty B.

Yelp
As a frequent deli explorer, I have ventured long and far to seek out quality consumption experiences like the one I just had. The moment I took a bite of the elegant, fluffy and soft bagel sandwich, I knew I was in the right spot for a delicious breakfast. I'd part the Dead Sea to get a ladkah from this place. No Pharos could hold me back from Crunchy Spice Bagel sandwich I ate. The fact that I started my new year with this bagel makes me proud to know Jewish Delis are an unstoppable force of nature in dining scene. Shanah Tovah and if your reading this, go get a damn bagel from this place now.

Lar W.

Yelp
I've had miss and hits at Wise Sons. This time I was in the area on Sunday at 9am at their Fillmore street location and ordered the classic smoked salmon and bagel. I was very disappointed. The bagel was hard and tough un-toasted. Maybe it would have been better toasted, but, that shouldn't be. I was wondering if I was getting a day old bagel from Saturday's batch. But, the filling was up to par. Not friendly service when I gave a 10% tip for TAKE-OUT.
google avatar

Harold W.

Yelp
I wanted to try their house smoked pastrami sandwich. I ordered the No 19 but toasted. Everything about the sandwich was delicious. Thinly sliced tender pastrami was delicious. The coleslaw was crunchy and was perfect with the pastrami. Service was nice and the sandwich was ready in 5-7 minutes. Lucked out and got a parking spot right in front of the restaurant. I am not from the area but if I was in the neighborhood and hungry I would know where to go to get a delicious sandwich.
google avatar

Stephen J.

Yelp
No stars. I'm a New Yorker and Wise Sons which on an occasion makes a terrific Corned Beef sandwich, even better than Tommy's Joynt. Their bagels are horrendous. Please send your bagel maker over to Wholey Bagel on 24th street and learn the art of Bagel making. Their other products are mediocre at best. Also when someone tips a fairly decent one it would behoove some of your staff to offer a polite thank you. Most do but there are some that are downright rude. By most accounts the staff are very hospitable. Since moving here 9 years ago Wise Sons is a major disappointment. Even your Matzoh Ball soup is bland.

Maya T.

Yelp
15$ for a bacon egg and cheese that wasn't even toasted ! Never go here unless you want a horrible 15$ bagel with a slice of cold cheese. Gross. Overpriced.
