21 Iconic D.C. Area Dishes

"Georgetown students on a budget are crazy for this hangover handheld under $10. But fans from all over also make the trek to campus for a hoagie deep-fried chicken tenders, Muenster cheese, tomato, cayenne pepper, and Parmesan pepper dressing. Order takeout or delivery from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m." - Tierney Plumb, Eater Staff

Yelp
I've been coming to Wisey's for years. Get the chicken madness, you will not regret it. The oreos are also very good. If you get anything else, you are on your own. But trust me you can't go wrong with these two items. It is not a fancy place, and the current location does not have any seating heads up.

Yelp
A Georgetown classic. I came back to wisemillers for nostalgic purposes and the food was very good. When I was in Georgetown, I alternated between the chicken madness and the hot chick both of which are delicious. This time I ordered the chicken madness which is a great sandwich that is very flavorful. The sandwich is super filling and comes with chips. The service is quick. The space is small but a perfect size for a takeout spot. I also love the Oreo cookie from here, I always take a few back home because how good it is

Yelp
"I'm going to Wisemiller's for study break. Join me?" Best cheap date in Georgetown University since 1953 when Charlie and Ruby arrived. My favorite is the breakfast ham and egg on toasted roll with lettuce, tomato and mayo. Old school bulk coffee with cream and sugar was mandatory. Delicious pastries while they last. Every great library needs a nearby deli. Priceless.

Yelp
Honestly I'd give this place 3.5 stars. Sandwich was pretty solid for being a $10 meal. I got the Hot Chick, which is pretty spicy because of the cayenne. Tomatoes didn't make the sandwich soggy and the chicken was crispy! Amazingly, they gave me two bags of chips and a pickle! Maybe because they overheard me saying I was gonna write a Yelp review! Service was alright. They made the sandwich quickly and took my order pretty soon after I got there...the extra bag of chips is also a sign of friendly service. I wonder what they would have said if I asked for suggestions.... Ambiance obviously isn't the best, but what can you expect from a go-to sandwich shop for hungry and stressed Georgetown students? It's meant to be a quick grab-and-go spot for a cheap sandwich. You won't find seating in there, or even standing space.

Yelp
The chicken madness sub was good (a bit spicy but still yummy). However, they forgot the pickle that was included in the order, which I was looking forward to.

Yelp
I graduated from Georgetown in the late 1990s and Wiseys was a weekly staple...they could get away with only one thing on the menu and still be successful - Chicken Madness. I came back today and was very happy to see that it hasn't changed - in a good way. Offering all kinds of drinks, bagels, cookies, and of course the deli - it's a perfect stop for student, visitor, and tourist, alike. The deli cooks are great. Hard working and always on point. Don't struggle trying to find a restaurant or burger joint in Georgetown - stop at Wiseys, grab some take out and enjoy a picnic on the lawn in front of Healy Hall, you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Don't bother: it's not as good as it used to be. I've been enjoying a particular sandwich for years (Sarah's Wrap) and it always tasted the same and was always delicious and unique among sandwiches I come across on other menus. I got one today (through a delivery service, but still made by Wisey's) and it was awful and not the same as it always had been (or as described on the menu). It's supposed to have, among other ingredients, roasted red peppers and tortilla points (like tortilla chip strips/bits), but instead had raw red AND green peppers and no tortilla points. It completely changed the flavor and texture and was really not tasty at all. It had TONS of raw green pepper (not a listed ingredient on the menu) and that's sort of all you could taste. Not worthy the $. Really disappointed. Since it's been good in the past maybe I'll try it again someday...but I don't know.

Yelp
Wisemiller is just incredibly convenient for students at Georgetown. The meals are fairly priced, but some sandwiches feel a little dry at times. I've ordered at least 10 times. Pretty good place, but if you have money there are certainly tastier options around.

Yelp
Stopped here for a quick and delicious bite for lunch! The sandwiches are very reasonably priced and made to order right in front of you. Attached to the deli is a small grocery mart with basic staples and a nice beer and wine selection.

Yelp
Craved menu sandwhich and found this little spot. Ordered the chicken parm which was good but if you are hungry, would recommend getting a second. Prices were fair for about $9 you get the sandwhich with a bag of chips. Fast and friendly service with several street parking options outside the restaurant. There are lots of options on their menu, which is in my list to try at another time. Enjoy!

Yelp
An OG staple of Georgetown. Excellent food a low price. Has that city deli ambiance. Service is always prompt and transactional.

Yelp
delicious sandwhiches but call ahead!! reminds me of new york and I love it!! def go during lunch.

Yelp
In the pre-covid time I got a chicken madness sub with the boys around every other week. I recently had a craving for another sub and it was fantastic. Great that the business is still going!

Ironlung M.

Yelp
Hot chick and chicken madness that's all I got to say.....................but don't call ahead you still have to go to the back and get your sandwich even if you place your order ahead of time

Yelp
In full disclosure I am a Georgetown student and a bad review of Wisemiller's or Wisey's Deli would likely lead to me being socially ostracized. Nonetheless, I love Wisey's. Nothing quite makes you feel the same after a long day of class on a cold day. A hardy sandwich with generous portions of chicken, cheese, and mayo makes college a little bit less stressful. Wisey's is the embodiment of no-frills dining. Inside their 36th Street shop, there is hardly enough room to stand. You will often find yourself rubbing shoulders with others as you wait anxiously for your order. The sight and aroma of meat sizzling on the grill along with the sounds of peppers and onions being vigorously chopped will leave you salivating by the time your meal is ready. Of course I recommend the Chicken Madness. It's spicy chicken, cheese, and hot peppers goes perfectly with the creamy mayonnaise and refreshing tomato. This sandwich is the quintessential comfort fold. For $8.95, you are getting a great deli sandwich and an iconic Georgetown experience!

Yelp
This was my husband's go-to deli back when he was in college. Now it's my favorite deli ever! I love their California Chicken. And if you like oreos and cookies, definitely get their oreo cookies.

Yelp
Went here for lunch today when I was walking through the neighborhood. It's a little shop in front that sells basic snacks and then in the back it's a breakfast lunch cool to order deli. Breakfast is served until 11:00. I ordered the famous chicken madness sandwich which came with a bag of a hip and a pickle for 7.97 served in a sub roll. It was plentiful and delicious very spicy and caught me off guard. See pics below it's quite narrow inside. All the prices are reasonable. Located directly across from the arts center

Yelp
The counter help, in my opinion, is just rude. Am I the only one who thinks the drinks are expensive? Narrow and cluttered. Rebel review: 2

Yelp
This is an updated review as of 31 Jan 2016. With students back in full swing and studying for exams, Wisey's is a Georgetown staple more than Booeymonger's is. Anyhow, I ordered the Chicken Sadness (actually it's the Chicken Madness), but I just had one of the worst weeks ever during Snowpacolypse 2016. Anyhow, the service is consistent from the prior experiences and the Chicken Madness tastes good as ever. To finish it off, I bought 2 oreo cookies, which if you haven't tried . . . you should.

Matt B.

Yelp
Good sandwiches at a good (read: college kid budget) price. Obviously a campus favorite as it was packed with what appeared to be students. Small grocery with basic staples as well. Nice place.

Yelp
Wisemiller's, a.k.a Wisey's is a Georgetown institution. When I first started my time at Georgetown someone told me the most important philosophical divide in the Georgetown community was Chicken Madness v Burger Madness. I didn't know what that meant, but I would soon learn. I learned I am a Chicken Madness guy. I learned that I love the Hot Chick almost as much as the Chicken Madness. I learned about Utz chips, having just moved from California, where there are none. I learned to make two meals out of one less-than-ten-dollar sandwich. Sure, I mostly came for the prepared foods. The deli component of this illustrious establishment. But I respected the hell out of their grocery options, occasionally indulging in them. I owe them my eternal gratitude for providing me sustenance in times of need. Five stars for basically getting me through grad school. Much love.

Yelp
Great service and very quick. I ordered in advance and when I came to pick up they were very quick and efficient. The biggest plus is that their food is really good!

Yelp
This place has been a staple of Georgetown for a long time and when I went there for college, I was just as much victim to their amazingness. Though I have yet to have their croissant sandwich in over 6 years , I never fail to stop by for one of their amazing cookies when I'm nearby. And the M&M cookie is my favorite!! Though the price has increased slightly, still only $1 per cookie (thanks inflation). The inside is very much the same, cramped and dim lighting, but that's what makes Wisey's....Wisey's
google avatar

Meilyn M.

Yelp
Chicken madness or Burger madness. You can't go wrong. And UTZ chips of course. A must have when visiting the hilltop as part of the Hoya experience. I was a regular here some 25 years ago and whenever I get back to visit, this is where I stop.
google avatar

Yelp
Wisemiller's is a good place to stop for quick and decent food. But it's not a place you would want to go if you were visiting the area. I ordered their Italian Chicken and was somewhat disappointed. It was a mediocre sandwich that was mostly bland and boring. The marinara sauce that filled the sandwich barely gave any flavor, and the chicken was mostly tasteless. The sandwich also came with potato chips, but they wouldn't allow substitutions for things like a piece of fruit. Unlike most sandwich shops, this place also has a miniature grocery store. But unfortunately, they don't have any space for seats and tables, so you aren't allowed to eat your sandwich in their shop.

Yelp
I eat their steak and cheese on an alarmingly regular basis lol. Very consistent good quality food for fast and relatively cheap. Good portions. Delish. One of my favorite local spots for a lunch to go.

Yelp
Wisemiller's Grocery & Deli is a favorite among the Georgetown undergrad/grad students, where they can stop by and grab a quick sammy to go. The menu offers subs, such as the Chicken Madness, Italian chicken Sub, Taste of New York, and California Chicken Sandwich. My friend and I decided to grab some lunch - she had the Tuna Salad on wheat with lettuce and tomatoes, whereas I had the Steak and Cheese Deluxe (steak, provolone (extra), grilled onions, and mayo (extra) (I opted out of the mushrooms and the lettuce) - we both thought the subs were just okay; the breads themselves were more on the drier side, the cheese not all the way melted, and not overall 'greasy' enough as I thought it would be - I think it was more of a 'hot sub' rather than the traditional steak n' cheese. The subs come with an original Utz chips and a pickle. I noticed that you can call ahead to do a carry-out - I am glad that I did, as the line for this place during the lunch rush can get pretty long! When you enter, the front park is more of a 'mart,' where you can get beer, wine, drinks, and other limited grocery items; you go around the bed to the other side where you can make a sharp left to get in line to order, or just stand to the right to pick up for call-aheads. Bring your food to the front of the store again to the cashier to pay. Street parking is quite limited, so keep that in mind. +call ahead for pick-up to avoid the lunch rush +front part is the grocery; deli around the back

Yelp
The home of the famous chicken madness.... Used to get one of these weekly! It's a magical sandwich with so many yummy flavors and a bit messy so it can explode a little while you eat it... I brought one of my Japanese friends who was visiting me here to try it and this was her favorite thing in America. When I'm not in the mood for the craziness (not so often), I like to get the chicken & avocado on croissant sandwich. It's also very good, simple, and fresh. Some of the sandwiches come as a lunch set with chips and a drink. Also the freshly baked gooey Oreo cookies are also crazy good.

Yelp
Always great sandwiches, including Burger Madness and Peggy's Special. Also just tried a smoothie here, good stuff.

C B.

Yelp
Loved the fact that you can see them make the sandwiches in front of you. It didn't take long and the ingredients looked fresh. It was also a clean work environment which made us feel comfortable getting our food from here. I got the steak and cheese for my dad and my boyfriend got a chicken sandwich. My dad loved the steak and cheese, there was just enough meat, cheese and fried onions and not overly seasoned.

Henry F.

Yelp
Wisey's is the best! Their chicken burgers are incredible, not to mention cheap prices! Everything about Wisey's is amazing!

Mark William B.

Yelp
I spent the summer of 1999 living in Georgetown and also visited the area countless times from 97-01. That said one mainstay for me was always Wisey's. Not much has changed on my what has only been my second visit back in 20 years. Maybe the Chicken Madness sub wasn't as epic as I remembered, but it was good. I just think my tastes have refined as an almost 40yo from when I was 19. That said the nostalgia was still there. The memories still came flooding back. And the place was packed with young Georgetown students getting their lunch fix. There is something to be said for longevity. This place has it. Well done Wisemiller's!!!!!
google avatar

Angela L.

Yelp
Chicken madness and the hot chick! YESSS. My first time here and I already loved it. This place is a hidden gem - convenience store and sub shop all in one. The subs were delicious. My boyfriend wanted to show me one of the places that he ate at a lot when he attended Georgetown. Both sandwiches were yummy, chicken madness had peppers in it to give it a nice crunch. The hot chick was like a chicken tender sandwich with oozing cheese... Ugh so good. Both sandwiches comes with pickle and chips. We also got a side order of fries which were super crisp. And at the end, we got 2 Oreo cookie cookies that my boyfriend was raving about. Didn't try this until later because the subs and fries were super filling. But damn!! The Oreo cookie cookies were like crack.

Yelp
I work nearby so I come here for lunch almost daily now. Probably the best deal on sandwiches (cost and variety) near the georgetown university / M street neighborhood. There are other decent spots in the area but this is my go to. Turkey club sub and an occasional burger or chicken madness are the real winners for me.
google avatar

Yelp
If you're a Georgetown student, this place is a must (yes, even my vegetarian friends were able to find good food here!). It's across the street from Walsh, and is open until 11:30pm for your late night munchies convenience. The aisles are narrow because the walls are packed with drinks, chips, candies, and random cleaning supplies, etc. that you might need if your dorm is nearby. Their legendary Chicken Madness has spanned the globe. I'm not kidding; I had a friend from Japan visit 4 years ago and loved the Chicken Madness so much that I brought one on the flight to Tokyo this past May to give her one. Their oreo cookies are also something to try. There is a second Wisey's on Wisconsin Ave, but most Georgetown students know that the one closer to campus is where it's at.
google avatar

Sarita T.

Yelp
The home of the amazing "chicken madness" and the "hot chick." Hoyas know what's up. Definitely a must stop for anyone that wants an amazing sammich for unheard of prices in Georgetown/DC area. Just walk in, order, and don't forget the Oreo cookies. Find a nearby picnic table (take a stroll after nearby Dumbarton Oaks:-) yummmm.

Yelp
Let me preface this that I am giving this place 4* not vis-a-vis the 1789s, or even the Good Stuff Eateries of the world. I am giving it 4* vis-a-vis other college quick eateries. I have had a food college eateries( Berkeley, UCLA specifically) and Wisey's is right there at 4*. Will it blow your mind? No. But for $8.65 I can get a footlong hot sammich that gets the job done in the most greaasy way possible and you can wash it down with a pickle. My favorite has always been the "Taste of NY". Get it with mayo and you'll get a nice helping of hot pastrami, grilled onions on a toasted hoagie. In and out when you order it over the phone. No seating or anything fancy, this place makes food that you're supposed to chow-down on Copley or, in my case, student lounge over a Youtube video.

D B.

Yelp
Their food is ALWAYS good. I'm soo glad they're still open during the pandemic. I think I might order from them right now!

Denise P.

Yelp
If you're hungry, don't order from here. My order arrived 40 minutes late; the driver didn't even leave until after my order was supposed to have arrived. The food was OK -- nice flavor but too many vegetables and not enough chicken in my sandwich.
google avatar

David P.

Yelp
This hole in the wall grocery makes sandwiches that outshine basically all of the on-campus dining options at Georgetown. Perfect for a bite between classes. Get the chicken madness -- a delicious melange of chopped grilled chicken, provolone, bacon, mayonnaise, lettuce and tomato -- it's a perfect refueling after a night of studying or a night of drinking at the tombs right next door. Can't really comment on the grocery, mostly just basic items, as well as wine and beer for all the college parties I guess. If you need to stock up on natural lite, this is your place. They just got a soft serve machine too. Will come again

K D.

Yelp
Great sandwiches and chicken fingers and fries. California chicken and italian parm sub have old school flavors. Polish it off with a grape soda.

Emma H.

Yelp
Amazing cookies! I don't eat the hot food very often, but I always stop in here to get a cookie after an exam. Without fail, they are always soft and delicious. Get the oreo one - it is unlike any cookie I've ever had before.
google avatar

Rebecca W.

Yelp
Oreo cookies are overrated, unless you LOVE sugar cookies, because they are literally sugar cookies with oreo crumbs mixed in. Personally I'd recommend the M&M cookies. They're really good. I've come here several times while visiting the university over the past few years and it seems to always be busy. They have a small grocery area with a lot of the basics, and also a restaurant area where you can order sandwiches and other casual small meals. They are good for the value and popular. It's kind of like a gas station convenience store, but a little nicer. But it's definitely not a place to go out of your way to go to and they have no seating. It's really grab-and-go. If you're nearby and hungry and are on a time crunch, then go for it.
google avatar

Demetria C.

Yelp
Wisey's was my staple throughout my time at Georgetown. It's a hole in the wall deli that the students find extremely attractive for lunch and munchies. They have a small selection of beer, drinks, some grocery items (crackers, candy, cookies, pasta, etc.), a full deli where they make some very delicious sandwiches (see Burger Madness, Cheddar Jack Chicken Sub, etc.) .. and their famous oreo cookies. Well, all of their cookies are amazing, but the oreo one in particular. Trust all of the reviews on that one. If you just want a quick bite and happen to be in the area, stop by Wisey's. The service is always the same, and each sandwich is always exactly the same every time I order it. Old faithful.
google avatar

Christopher M.

Yelp
Walk in, walk to the back, go to the grill, ask for a chicken/burger madness, leave, go down the street behind the car barn by the tables, nice eating area behind the car barn, and enjoy. Solid sandwiches... and you can even do some grocery shopping.
google avatar

Sandy C.

Yelp
Hands down the best steak and cheese sandwich I've had in my life! The bread is chewy and soft and absorbs all the juices from the steak and cheese. The entire sandwich is moist and delicious and so flavorful! Not sure how they season their meat, but possibly with msg or something addicting! Best I've ever had! Loved it more than any cheesesteak I've ever had! Must must go!! Their Oreo cookies are also a must! My brother orders the watchtower! He loves it!
google avatar

Jess C.

Yelp
Deli for hungry Georgetown students on a budget. For ~$8 you can get a sub with regular UTZ chips (no substitutions) & pickle. I tried the Peggy and Chicken Madness. I liked the kick to the Chicken Madness, Peggy is good if you're craving hot Turkey instead. They offer a selection of fresh baked cookies such as Health, White Macademia, and Oreo for $1 each. That gives this place some novelty. I didn't understand the previous 5-star reviews because this place a reliable greasy-spoon type of place, but it isn't THAT good that you should go out of your way for. It's a cheap eat & you get a generous portion. That's it.
google avatar

Colleen R.

Yelp
Twenty years after graduating from Georgetown, I was so excited to have a sandwich from the grill at Wisey's again. It did not disappoint. I was torn between ordering one of my old favorites, the Peggy Special or the Chicken Madness, but ultimately ordered the Chicken #1. This is basically a grilled chicken sandwich with bacon and cheese on a croissant. Somehow, it is absolutely delicious. The sandwich selection at Wisemiller's is much larger than I remember, and if I lived nearby I would be a dedicated customer. I would need to try them all. Georgetown has a gem in Wisemiller's. If you're visiting, try it out. Prices are very good (probably because they cater mostly to students). Enjoy your sandwich while sitting on one of the main lawns of the university one block away. There is no seating at Wisey's.

SC R.

Yelp
Chicken madness is solid. Reasonably priced sandwiches that come with chips. Also like the taste of New York. It's open late. Definitely call in and order ahead so you don't have to wait.
google avatar

Cory X.

Yelp
I love the chicken madness and it is made to perfection. The bread is soft, chicken isn't that dry, and the bacon is amazing. Also only $7.95 and includes pickle and chips.
