Detroit’s Best New Restaurants, May 2025 | Eater Detroit

"Witch Topokki, the first Michigan location for this all-you-can-eat Korean-style restaurant, opened on Friday, April 11, in Troy. With its first U.S. location in Manhattan, visitors are invited to customize their own topokki experience by selecting their preferred seasonings with broth, along with proteins like sliced meats, seafood, noodles, and vegetables." - Serena Maria Daniels

I drove 20 minutes to this place and it was amazing, when I walked into the restaurant the manger greeted me happily and with such kindness. The inside looks absolutely amazing, it’s spacious and you have many options. I went in there and got the Witch Classic which was recommended by one of the servers, and I don’t regret it at all! When i went it the hot food had many choices and none of the choices were bad at all. Originally went in with the thought of only being able to finish one round, but it was so good to the point I had to get myself another round and this time my broth flavor was Magic Bean also another good one I would recommend for those with a taste bud that enjoys sweetness. I went expecting it to be one bowl because of a common concept that asians do something that is called “communal eating” Overall in my opinion it was perfect to me. Thank you to the people in the kitchen for a job well done on the hot foods, thank you to the servers for their kindness, and a big thank you to the manager for being so welcoming! I will be seeing you guys again soon!

Had such a great experience here today! We have done it before in South Korea but it was really nice of our server to explain everything so helpfully and get us started. There were so many options for your bowl but also so much food in the hot bar! Everything was fresh and clean. Staff was incredibly helpful and kind, and we loved the flavor our server recommended to us. We’ll definitely be back to try more!

Tried 마녀떡볶이 for the first time and it completely exceeded my expectations! It’s an all-you-can-eat tteokbokki buffet with tons of toppings, and the flavor was just like the instant-style tteokbokki you’d get in Korea. Everything—from the menu variety to the taste—was absolutely spot on. The price per person was very reasonable, and as one of the trending spots in Manhattan, it definitely lived up to the hype. I loved it so much that I went twice during my 2-night, 3-day trip! I really hope something like this opens up in Ohio someday. Highly recommend if you're a fan of Korean food!

Had a great time here on a random Tuesday night. The selection was good, they had halal fried chicken, and so many noodle selections! My favorite was the cheese filled tteokbokki, the Korean corn cheese (side dish), and the sweet potato tteokbokki. Couple of things to note: they have many fried options with meat (fried chicken, pork dumplings, pep pizza) but not many meat options for the actual hotpot, mostly just fish/fishcakes, noodles (ALL kinds) and veggies. Secondly unlike hotpot, they have one dish in the middle of the table that you cook on and share. We came in a group of 6 and had to sit in two separate tables. The seasoning for the broth is delicious and you can make it as spicy or cheesy as you like! Lastly, the service was great and our server (I think her name was Munni?) was super sweet and showed us how everything works as well as gave us recommendations on what to add to our broth. Would come again.

All of the staff were so kind, and welcoming. The atmosphere made you feel right at home. Definitely family friendly and a great date night spot. The food was phenomenal for the price you pay. All of the seafood options were very fresh. We also received a free appetizer and free ice cream! The picture speaks for itself. Looking forward to coming back soon.

First things first, I would 100% call ahead! Since they just opened they’ve been insanely busy. We got there and had to put our names down and it was a 2 hour wait for us. Other than that… Service was amazing! The person at the front was very friendly. Our server was also great. Very helpful and informative! The food was pretty good. I definitely loved their “potion” station, thought that was cool. Definitely add a variety of seasonings to your bowl, it gives more flavor! They had a lot of options of toppings and such to add. We also grabbed some of the fried items, unfortunately they were cold so it wasn’t as enjoyable. But still the flavor was good. Overall, it was such a nice and fun experience!

Google
Not supposed to be a BBQ place/it’s mostly rice cakes (which I think “Witch Topokki” actually means) so don’t come here thinking it’s like KPOT. I mean, it is in some ways: they’re Korean and AYCE, but also not. They have some chicken too. Not live chickens though. There’s also a seasonings/sauce bar that’s pretty cool. Quite a few TVs and projectors

Paul Smigielski

Google
A restaurant with superb standard. The bossman Tony is incredibly hospitable along with the rest of the staff being helpful. The food is an exploration of flavors with all kind of combinations. Great value for the amount of food. Atmosphere is open and social, the vibe is definitely comforting. Fancy by design, but welcoming whatever the case may be. Although no partitions between tables, there’s 2 separate sections with a big wall in between so noise is very minimized naturally.

Yelp
I really really enjoyed this concept!!! The staff explained the process very very clearly and you have lots of options and varieties of items to choose from. Your table will feature one hot pot style bowl, where you can pour your broth and add your spice/ flavoring via powders. There is a bar area for the powders, where there are a variety of spices and suggestions for flavor mixes and heat levels. The items offered on the bar were awesome: tteokbokki (plural, lots of styles/ shapes/ types), sliced beef belly, plentiful cheese, and noodles (ramen, wide and thin glass, and another one!), as well as different vegetables and fish cakes. There's hot appetizers, such as fried chicken, pizza, and other things. I really liked that they offered halal options, as there is a big Muslim community in the area that appreciates these. There are pork options offered which are labeled very clearly. I do advise, if it's just you and one other person (and if you differ on spice/ flavor preference and other things), to inform the staff and request a split bowl for each of you to enjoy your own things. It is really easy to fill up here, so don't overdo it on your first round and portion your broth to your powders (and cheese if you like cheese!) well to the consistency of your preference. Finally, the seating and vibes were very nice. The staff, notably Sam and Rose who attended to our table, were incredibly attentive and informative. The restaurant is clean and has music playing and videos on TV screens of things customers would enjoy. The bar and seating areas are spaced well and it is not claustrophobic in there which is a big relief for me personally. I certainly can't wait to return!

Yelp
This location used to belong to Pizzapolollis, so sad it is gone, it was a family favorite. I heard about this place all over social media, so I was excited to try it. I was going to give a three, but it is more of a 2.5, and for many reasons, I will give it a two for now, but I am willing to come back. I like the concept but immediately was turned off by only having one hot bowl per table. The server explained that it is family style, like other restaurants in Korea she went to. I do appreciate that and do not mind family style, but this really limits me and my family for many reasons. It was truly a good thing I only came with one child who like myself, is not as picky with a communal pot and it easy going when it comes to food selection. If they continue to only allow one pot, I would only be able to come with one child at a time, and never come with my husband. She also explained everything too quickly, including the cooking method and times and also greatly underestimated how much broth should go in the bowl. The also explained we only get three bowl changes. That is fine, but if I am paying per person, why does each person not get a bowl? We went during lunch, thank goodness, but honestly, we did not eat $40 worth of food with one bowl then one $2 pack of ramen. And while she was a very kind, attentive, and personable server, it was not quite worth it. We were quickly taken to the powder area. I think each person should be able to pick their own powder combo or have more explanation of the flavors of the powder and not just spice levels. I did enjoy what we got, but I am not sure it would have been what my child would have picked. I picked out some shrimp, seafood mix, and rice cakes, and a bit of vegetables, which comprised of mostly mushrooms. It said there was beef there, but it was empty. And the variety of veggies was not very diverse outside of mushrooms. If my husband had been here, he would not have been able to eat, especially if we had to share a pot. She does not eat seafood or mushrooms and would have had absolutely nothing to eat. We poured the food and powder into the pot to cook and the server put so little broth, it would not have actually cooked even though I asked her several times and she insisted it would. I had to pour a lot more broth into the pot. We went to the buffet area. I did love all of the choices of chicken and different dishes, but they were all completely mislabeled, so I did not know what I was eating. I did enjoy them, but again, my husband does not eat all ingredients, and would not have been able to decipher what he could from what was available versus what the labels. The one bowl we ate was fairly tasty and so were the sides. We also eat ate one piece of watermelon and one slice of orange. But to be honest, there should be some sort of small dessert like at other comparable places. My child also wanted to try to do a ramen packet. The server put in such little water and again insisted it would cook the ramen. It indeed did not. In fact, I had to try to add a lot of water and it still all absorbed, made the noodles too al dente, and burned the bottom of the pot. Plus we were not instructed on how to work the heat so I could not control the cooking. And we are a ramen family, I have cooked hundreds of packets, this was the least successful ever and came out wrong, so I spent all of that money for a bad batch of noodles. My child also had a smoothie which was good, but it was more of a milkshake and not a smoothie. I also did not internet snooping. Other locations seemed to allow tables to have multiple pots and not just one. They also had advertised a cheese fondue which was not there. All in all, go to Kpot first if you want to have individual pots, more food, more choices, and dessert. That place is worth the cost and offers more value for your money. I will probably try this place again but be more insistent in having a pot per person and put more broth into the pots.

Yelp
Great concept, poor execution. I like the idea of this place but it just didn't hit. First, the broth is like create your own. With dry spice mixtures. They have recommendations but it just didn't hit. We ordered drinks at the start of our meal and didn't get our lemonade until the very end and never got our coke. The hot food on the bar seemed old and a lot of the tags didn't match what was actually on the bar. Honestly, I really wanted to like this place but if you are looking for something similar level of quality as k pot or some of the other amazing Asian food in Madison heights area you will be disappointed.

Yelp
Had a great experience here! They have all you can eat hot pot. It's family style where you share one pot with your table. You choose dry spices to make your sauce and then choose all your toppings. They also have a buffet of fried chicken and other items. I appreciated the halal options.

Yelp
Think this used to be where the Rio wrap place used to be located by the long gone Kirkland store. The Vitamin store is still standing. Parked at Witch Toppoki just after 6:20 PM. Folks are waiting outside. Some people standing by the bar waiting for their table. The guest list stated it would be a 50 minute wait list, 9 tables ahead of us. Still 5 ahead of us and it's been over 45 minutes after putting in our name. We were seated just after an hour after putting in our name on their wait list. It's over an hour wait for a table. There are 20 tables inside. Needs more seating at this all you can eat place, which likely keeps people here for longer than necessary? $65.02 for two of us for weekend dinner rates, it's $25.95/person. It's kind of a Tteokbokki hotpot concept. I couldn't find any sauce mix that wasn't overly sweet, even the original and mala spice was super sweet. The sweet potato and cheese rice cake weren't for me, off texture. I like the rod and barbell shaped ones best. Lance (?) started waiting on us, but the entire staff came by our table to check up on and us make sure we were good. I got my fill of enoki mushrooms, rice cake and watermelon. The king mushrooms and beech mushrooms were good as well. The crab fish balls didn't taste the way I had hoped. Not my jam. The kimchi isn't too bad. Looked pretty fresh. Most of the apps and fried items were so-so, nothing was worth going back for home. The spicy chicken and chicken drums were good, so was the mala fish soup and fish cake sticks. The broth is good. Staff explained the seasoning table and how to pick our spices and seasoning. Walk you to the table for the spices and keeps you satisfied and happy during your visit. The corn cheese is gooey, simple and good. Check out at your table, hand held card readers to cash out from the table. Easy, quick and convenient.

Yelp
Overall this place is a fun new experience to try with a group of family and or friends. The place is well spaced out and the staff were very friendly. They explained how the process worked and gave some nice suggestions on what seasonings to use. As with anything that is family style for a restaurant, they only give you one large bowl to cook the food in so you have to be on the same page about what flavors and spice level your table wants. I went opening weekend when it was so busy! We had to sign up early on Sunday to even get a dinner reservation. The food was pretty good, but be warned it's a lot of fried and carb heavy foods so you do fill up fast! Would I go again? Probably not for awhile since it's so carb heavy, but I definitely recommend trying out the place at least once! There aren't many places in Michigan you can get Korean street food and all you can eat at that!

Yelp
Pretty cool experience, and really nice to see Korean street food landing in the US! We went for lunch, which is $20/pp. Beware that the menu says beverages are included, but they aren't. Only water is free. We asked when we got there and they said they would not honor it. My dad loved the odeng and the odeng soup! The had a larger variety of fish balls, rice cakes, and veggies. The AYCE also includes the hot bar which consists of KFC, fries, onion rings, gyoza, and tempura. We used mala powder as our base, which was pretty good, but our dukbokki base kept turning out sweet and we couldn't figure out if it was from the powder or the soup base. We would have preferred minimal sweetness and amped up spice, but nonetheless, it was a good experience for lunch! FYI: The cheese ball dukbokki has sweet corn and cheese in it and was my favorite! Flavor explosion!

Yelp
Witch Topokki in Troy totally hit the spot after my workout! The food was flavorful, filling, and exactly what I needed to refuel. Everything was fresh, well-seasoned, and came out hot and fast. Huge shoutout to my server Eric--he delivered awesome service from start to finish! Super friendly, attentive, and made sure I had everything I needed. It's rare to find a spot that checks all the boxes: great food, good vibes, and top-tier service. Witch Topokki is officially my new go-to post-gym spot. Thanks again, Eric!

Yelp
We happened to drive by and check them out. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful explaining the whole process and helpful with letting me know what was gluten free and what wasn't. Our waiter helped us mix our spices so they weren't too hot for my 6 yr old and 18 month old. My 6 year old daughter had fun picking out all the rice cakes, mussels, huge shrimp, meat, etc for our bowl and then we did a walk around the rest of the buffet area and gathered more goodies for everyone to try. When we arrived back to our table our waiter had the broth going and added everything for us to cook. It wasn't like a soup but more of a sauce. I think if you wanted a soup you could make it too since it's all you can eat. There was also a really good corn and cheese dish there. We all enjoyed the food. It was a delicious and fun experience. I mentioned maybe adding changing tables in the bathrooms to help since it was hard trying to change my son and they were very friendly and open to letting their manager know and getting them in. I definitely recommend checking them out! They had a very K pop feel and very cool decor with lots of screens playing Korean pop music. It was definitely worth the experience and I didn't even know until later they had a cool bar area and drink menu. Very neat place.

Yelp
Congratulations on your opening. Love the concept! Michigan needs more asian restaurants. Went opening day! Thank God for voucher because I don't think i would pay over 25.00. Per person. By 4:30 they ran out of meat As well as ice cream. But they didn't mention it to us until I asked. It says korean street food. So they had fried chicken and o' deng and fried veggies. and French fries. Would've been nice if they had more variety of korean street food like soondae or hodduk or even korean pancake aka boocheengae. They were all Salty! Minus the fried sweet potato carrot . The sauces were pretty good. Variety of it . We tried the original ddukboki and the rose sauce. SERVICE was good for first day. Friendly. They just need a bit more training. As in communication. Saw the owners sitting and drinking alcohol and eating and started to work right after for busy dinner time. I really wish they had more than one burner per table that fits 4. They said they can change the base/soup upto 3 times. But that would mean 4 people would have to wait for the others to make/boil what they want to eat. Unless they agree to eat the same. Would I go here again? Not for that price.

Yelp
Great experience at this restaurant. The young lady who helped my dad and I took the time to explain everything and had a wonderful attitude. The food was delicious. The restaurant had a wonderful atmosphere/ music! We will definitely be back!

Yelp
The food and service is great. The place is more street food than big plates so it might not be your taste if you want more like kbbq. The ambiance is nice during the lunch time when I had went.

Yelp
The service and the food went far past expectations our server deserves a raise x5 absolutely great we will absolutely be returning 20/10

Yelp
The staff is friendly and helpful. The food is great. The experience is very fun. I have been 2 times now cant wait to go again. John is always very friendly and makes sure we are taken care of. If you don't like the food then you just don't like Korean food. Reasonable price as well.

Yelp
To start off this review with 2 main warnings. 1 this is a LONG review and 2 This place is not just like KPOT. I repeat this is not the same as KPOT. It has similarities but it's different ! The table me and my hubby had we shared one pot that we had put broth in (just alittle bit) then went up to the bar and got the dry seasoning. Added that to the broth, while that was starting to boil we went back up and picked our veggies and the few meat the had (there are not that many meat) I'm ok with that but someone who likes hot pot expects alot of different meats. There are alot of rice cakes though. We then sat down and added the meat to the broth for 2 minutes then the veggies and ramen to it. I went back to the bar and got the other food that was up there like the chicken wings and etc. There were a good choice of items to pick of appetizers like items. the pot ee create was really rich in flavor and the whole set up was interesting and unique. I will most certainly be coming back again.

Yelp
We have been waiting for this location to open since they first put the signs up, and we were not disappointed. The staff were incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and kind. The food was amazing! We have found our new favorite place.

Yelp
Interesting semi-self serve Korean-esque concept. Not necessarily 100% authentic, but close enough. For those who like spicy, you can easily add spicy to your individual bowl. Very informative and friendly staff. This requires a few visits before figuring out how best to assemble your plates. Plus we watched a few Korean guests and got ideas from them.

Cat P.

Yelp
Such a fun and delicious concept! My partner and I came by for dinner and we were seated with the nicest server who explained the restaurant concept to us. We had a nice time eating, talking, and cooking our meal. I will warn and suggest you don't pile on food in the beginning and try a small amount of rice cakes and seasoning mixes to see what you like first. The guy in the front warned me about it, but my buffet eyes got the best of me and I piled on an insane amount of rice cakes that I was too full to try other things. I definitely plan to go back more strategically next time! Overall, a great vibe, reasonable prices, and happy to have this option here!

Hanjatiana Nirina R.

Yelp
this was honestly a great experience. food was great. raw ingredients seemed fresh and cooked dishes were good. the sweet potato rice cakes were our favs. servers were friendly and helpful in explaining how things work. Owner or manager greeted us and offered "complimentary" corn dish, but what's complimentary if it's ayce. spacious and comfortable booths to seat. defo recommend!

Yelp
Very poor experience in this newly opened restaurant. Our family went to this restaurant for dinner right before Mother's day. We waited for an hour to get a table. After we sat down, no server showed up. There were 2 stainless water bottles with no labels sitting on the table. We thought it was water and drank it. It was broth for the pot! The server did not explain well how the food was served. The server did not come to our table when the pot was dried up and more broth should be provided. No prompt water refill either. The server did not come to our table to remove the used plates and bowls as often as it should be. At the end, we were unable to find the server when we wanted to get our bill. We had to walk to the front to pay. The server also did not make me aware that ice cream was available to customers. It was a very confusing, disappointing, and bad dining experience, especially for our special Mother's day dinner. The food selection was very limited. There was only one kind of sliced meat which was very fatty and poor quality beef. Basically, they have different dry seasoning mix for you to add broth into it and then boil rice cake, noodles, vegetable, meat... lots of carbs. Just like eating ramen with more stuffs. Another concern was that it was not clean. The plates on the buffet table were wet. The water cups on our table had water inside before we used them. Don't know if they were washed and dried properly. I have never seen a restaurant as disorganized and unprofessional as this one. This is my first and last visit to this restaurant because of poor service and limited food selection. Do not recommend it.

Yelp
They are doing a soft opening right now so we didn't see any meat. The food was great and the broth flavoring options are very nice. Service was great and quick. I can't wait to have this be a regular spot after the full opening April 11th. Great place to hangout with friends, great music playing.

Leia K.

Yelp
We visited on Easter Day during a slow hour, so I expected everything to be well-stocked and fresh--but that wasn't the case. For $25.95 per person, the food selection was disappointing. Many of the stations were half empty or looked unappetizing, especially the rice cakes and vegetable section. The odeng area only had lukewarm broth with no fish cakes. I asked the staff, and they said they'd refill it, but it stayed empty the entire time. Same with the green onions--completely gone, even though they're essential for tteokbokki. Only one type of tteokbokki can be cooked at a time per table, which was frustrating since I enjoy spicy tteokbokki, but my son can't eat spicy food. We had to take turns, and it really limited our experience. At most all-you-can-eat places, kids his age don't pay full price--but here, he was charged the same as an adult. And yet, all he could eat were cold fried chicken and fries. There just wasn't much for him to enjoy, and honestly, I regret bringing a child who doesn't eat tteokbokki to a tteokbokki-focused place. That's on me--but still, it didn't feel fair for what we paid. We ended up eating barely anything and still paid almost $100 for three people. The staff didn't seem very knowledgeable about tteokbokki, and overall, the whole experience felt unprepared and underwhelming. If you're not going with someone who shares the exact same taste, or if you have kids who don't eat spicy food, I'd think twice. You're probably better off grabbing ingredients at H Mart and making it at home for a quarter of the price. I was excited to try a new tteokbokki spot--but I left disappointed.

Yelp
I have been back several times and everything is amazing!! Food, service, and overall vibes get A+ from me. Munni usually takes care of us. She is super attentive and will walk you through every single step. Special shoutouts to Irwin and Bao!! Even on Mother's Day, we got super quick service and the food bar was well stocked.

Mona S.

Yelp
Food is good. Would have preferred own hot pots. If you don't like choices others make you have to take turns on hot pots. Table near had this terrible blower blowing down on you. It was annoying. Had to move.

Phil R.

Yelp
Went before they were officially open and had an amazing experience! Really cool concept and the staff is always helpful, friendly and able to explain everything if you have questions. Lots of options to try between the topokki and the already made food! Keep it up!

Michael K. F.

Yelp
First time here, and first time experiencing topokki, something ad a cook I'm not familiar with. The whole place is amazing. Pork Bulgogi was excellent. They do have different heat levels, however if you are like me and have a low spice tolerance, go for Rose, Snow White, and Curry. Those three are like a chicken base but oh sooo good. Service is exemplary. Being a newbie, having the help and guide through is a big help. If you can as for help. Staff is more than willing to assist in every aspect. Food is also amazing. Very good, did think I would be stuffed after eating here but WOW! Overall come here to Witch Topokki. Its well worth the price and then some.

Yelp
Attended the soft opening of the establishment and they did not disappoint. The staff were friendly, helpful, and attentive. I had topokki before, but never AYCE topokki, so we had to have a run down on how it work with the powders for the sauce and toppings at the bar. Nice little appetizers selection as well at the hot food bar. Patrons were casually dressed with K-pop music blasting over the speakers and on the video screens too. My only negative takes would be a couple items on the hot food bar were room temperature to cold and the fried chicken were a little bit on the salty side. Other than that, had a good first experience and would definitely return with friends and family again.

Tuyet L.

Yelp
I first went to this witch's place to eat, I felt very disappointed, because the food was not good, and my daughter was not yet 3 years old but they charged the price, I think it's not worth it for me to come back here again, because I go to restaurants like K pot or Fuji that are better than this place, they also don't charge my children under 3years old

Ashley K.

Yelp
This place was ridiculously price, and the food was gross. The items at the buffet was labeled wrong and the chicken wasn't cooked all the way I would never go there again

Ashley H.

Yelp
Five Stars Hands Down. This is my new favorite restaurant! The Rose Dance brothers was phenomena! Great Service and Great Food!

This is a fantastic place to eat. Staff is nice and explains everything. There is enough other food to really be interesting and delicious!

Yelp
Recently visited Witch Topokki on a whim with my best friend after we drove by. The concept is very cool but it missed the mark for me on a couple of aspects. I'm a big fan of topokki so being able to customize the dish made me excited. We received free corn cheese which I thought was flavorful and a great little appetizer. Can't go wrong with free! They had a pretty good selection of sauce powders, however someone completely new to topokki may feel a bit intimidated because I just didn't see good explanations of each sauce choice. One of the biggest drawbacks of this experience is that each table forced to share a bowl. There is only one cooking bowl per table, so we had to agree on the sauce, toppings and protein. I'm a spice lover, my bestie not so much, so I was forced to tone it down which was kind of disappointing. My friend wanted to add shrimp, but being that the shrimp were raw and whole (I love shrimp but they have to be more prepared.. I can't get past the eyeballs), so I asked her to skip them. So, after we moved past the initial disappointment of having to share, we opted for a combo of the witch, rosé, and carbonara powders, which ended up being delicious, but again, I wish I could have customized it a bit more to my own particular liking. All of the rice cakes (topokki) seemed fresh and the one we choose were great, be sure to try the corn cheese topokki. The toppings were all fresh and good quality. I was so happy to see enoki mushrooms!! I decided to peruse the fried bar, and while I tried a few items, none of them really wowed me. Overall the experience was unique and fun. I'd love to see an option to accommodate parties that don't want to share their topokki bowl. Would I go back again? Sure I would, but considering it's over an hour away from my home, I'd only go again if I were down that way for another purpose. Wouldn't make a special trip.
