Wok And Roll Review - Chinatown - Washington DC - The Infatuation

"Wok and Roll is a lunchtime dream, because while the price may be budget (lunch specials are under $10), the food isn’t. You’ll likely find high school kids spending their weekly savings here, and tourists who’ve wandered in after seeing the karaoke options through the window. And though we haven’t tried the karaoke yet (we need a few more drinks for that), their food is A-1.  There were no misses on the menu which includes classic Chinese dishes, so lo-mein, beef and broccoli, etc., AND sushi, hence the name. Thankfully, they do both really well. photo credit: Reema Desai photo credit: Reema Desai" - Omnia Saed

Had food delivered to my hotel room via DoorDash. Food was good. I honestly didn’t like the shrimp egg roll, nor the vegetarian had a very strong cabbage flavor. General Tso’s chicken was very good. Chicken fried rice was great, and the sautéed broccoli was good too. A little pricey in my opinion but they do give you a decent amount of food.

Love me some Wok and Roll! Always friendly service and delicious, consistent food. And they will make it EXTRA SPICY if you ask them to. Generous portions and great prices. My go-to for tasty Chinese takeout in Leland!

Google
Traditionally I have always enjoyed this place. However, I ordered last night and food was sub par. My main entree was ok but I always order extra egg rolls. They were stone cold like at some nasty buffet. I expect better when I order fresh, not cold food. Do better Wok and Roll!

Google
I ordered sesame chicken, general tsos, chicken lo mein, crab rangoons, eggrolls, and egg drop soup. The sauce for the crab rangoons did not taste good and the eggrolls tasted like frozen eggrolls from the store thrown in the deep fryer. They are not handmade anymore and I was disappointed since that is my favorite part. Everything else was good, but I won't be going back unless they start making their own eggrolls again.

Google
Review based off 6 entrees and multiple visits. Reading the reviews of others, I feel like I didn't even go to the same restaurant. (Wok and Roll Leland NC). The good: S&S Chicken 👍(always reliable), egg rolls were just 👌. Shredded spicy beef 👍. The bad: shrimp egg foo young and pork egg foo young (very tasteless and bland), moo goo gia pan was soupy, drowning in mushrooms and the chicken was large flat cuts of some weird variety of processed chicken. Gross texture. Cashew chicken had the same nasty chicken and very few cashews. I miss good Chinese food from the past😞.

Google
I visited wok & Roll in Leland and ordered a Sesame Chicken with Shrimp Fried Rice, Szechuan Beef with white rice, Egg Drop Soup, and steamed dumplings. This is my rating for each dish: Sesame Chicken 5 ⭐️ Szechuan Beef 4 ⭐️ Egg Drop Soup 4 ⭐️ Steamed Dumpling 4.5 ⭐️ Out of 5 ⭐️ I would give Wok & Roll 4.5⭐️ One of the best Chinese express that I have had in the Leland area, and would definitely recommend! Customer service was top notch with a very welcoming atmosphere. There is also plenty of parking since the location is in a shopping center! You definitely need to try Wok & Roll🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

Google
This was the WORST experience ever at a restaurant. Placed order knowing that they were busy because it was Christmas Eve way before I need it, they said it would be 20 minutes, 2 hours later I got my food. Work all day to ensure that Christmas Eve would be enjoyable and these guys jack it all up! Bring back the original owner because you all are incompetent and rude! No apology and they blamed a third party provider that they hired for the issues. You all need to find a new line of work because this isn't clearly working for you. One night and you did more damage to your business then you know.

Google
Had a large order for pick up, everything verified over the phone twice. Arrived to pick up food, assured it was all there. NOT!!! No gravy for pork egg fu yung, no white rice for combo meal. Mongolian beef meat seemed All day old and hard and dry. Not a good experience.

Yelp
Pretty decent local Chinese takeout spot in Wilmington NC. We ordered chicken lomein, 3.5/5. Crab Rangoon, 2/5 because it was just cream cheese in a fried wonton. Fried chicken wings, 4/5. Would have been a 5 if we didn't find feathers on the wings Pork fried rice, 4/5. All in all, I recommend you check this spot out if you're craving Chinese food and you're in the area!

Yelp
Shrimp low main, pot stickers and sauce and egg drop soup were perfect today. Thank you for always making great food here in Leland. Everyone is pleasant to talk to.

Yelp
Placed large order, verified everything ordered over the phone twice. Arrived to pick up order and was assured everything was in the box. NOT! No gravy for the pork egg foo young, no white rice for a combo meal. Mongolian beef meat was all day old and dry.

Yelp
The new owners of the restaurant have caused the quality of food to significantly decline. The noodles and beef have lost all of its flavor. And things such as the dumplings and chicken are not crispy and are just straight up soggy. The stark contrast between the quality of food from now and a couple of years ago is outstanding. The only positive of this place is that they complete orders quickly, that's it.

Virginia H.

Yelp
New owner poor quality of meat, appearance and taste. It used to be better. Meat texture is strange and taste is washed out.

Randal L.

Yelp
This place has gone WAY downhill with new management. Last week got sweet and sour pork and apparently reheated from the distant past. So hard we could not chew it. Had to throw it away. We have been eating here since moving here in 2018. It used to be good (although had to deal with hateful woman on phone to order). Hear they charge $2 to use credit card now. By the way, the sanitation grade is now B.. I'm done.

Richard L.

Yelp
First visit since new management. Meal was packaged as ordered and on time for pick up. Ribs were a little overdone and over sauced, but tasty. Roast pork with vegetables was a reasonable portion, well cooked but lacking basic flavors. Will return to try others dishes. Limited seating.

Yelp
Incredibly awful food! Just put $28 dollars worth of food into the garbage. We very rarely order Chinese style food so we decided to give it a try again after being disappointed here in the past. Ordered WonTon soup, 2 egg rolls, Vegetable Lo mein and spare ribs. The soup was this odd bright synthetic yellow color with a skim of grease on top and the soup tasted Ike they had put old deep fryer grease into with a few tiny dumplings with about a 1/2 teaspoon of something in them DISGUSTING. The egg rolls were obviously a frozen product I watched them pull a factory sealed package out of frz. And dump them into the fryer they were tiny tasteless wraps with a soggy nondescript filling. The lo mein was over cooked noodles with a few sad vegetables in it again it had this awful old grease taste to it and was at nest bland and dry. The 4 ribs were decent Asian style ribs but again seemed to hav this rancid old grease taste to them and I believe was about $12 for 4 ribs. Before I get lectured on food costs I spent years in a family restraint business so spare me, also save the responses of the "we've been eating here for years and it's wonderful" it is common for frequent diners not to really notice the decline in food quality because it is a slow transition down and you have adjusted your palate to the change. This was straight out BAD food to the point we tossed it not only because it was terrible also I i feared we would get ill. The only upside I found was the young guy at the counter although super busy was courteous and friendly. It is so sad we live in a desert of awful food choices.

Yelp
Moved today to Leland and was hoping to find my new spot. Unfortunately I will not be ordering from here again. The food was very very bland. And the customer service was quite terrible. They didn't even acknowledge me for 10 minutes I stood there as my food sat ready behind the counter. Not a smile or hello. Disappointing. What I ordered: Hot & Sour Soup - had a very odd/off putting taste - didn't taste like normal hot and sour soup. Vegetable Lo Mein - bland, zero taste even adding lots of soy sauce. Sautéed broccoli - very hard and weird color, also the sauce had no flavor (same sauce as the lo mein) and it was oddly extremely watery (we literally had to strain it)

Stacy B.

Yelp
We ordered from the dinner combos - General TSO and schezuan chicken. I had the crab Rangoon with mine. Everything was delicious. Will go back. Owner was very nice also.

Yelp
Small Chinese fast food with friendly and hard-working owner. Not the cleanest place in the strip mall but you can't knock the food and service. If you seek hot, fast, and tasty Chinese food, this is the place to go.

Ben C.

Yelp
New owners and the restaurant has gone DOWN HILL. Used to like coming here, but now it's a thing of the past for me!
google avatar

Bruce S.

Yelp
Best Chinese food in Leland. Our go tos are the egg foo young, chicken and broccoli, and the fried dumplings.

Liz Z.

Yelp
Wok and roll has become Leland's stapled place for Chinese food. The family that runs it is great.

Yelp
Awful. Greasy. Rude lady that answers phone. Not a great experience. Overpriced for Leland.

Yelp
It's hit or miss at this place, and today was definitely a miss. Ordered "chicken" chow mein and received mostly mein and hardly any chicken. Now, I understand there are supply chain issues right now, but the small amount of chicken in my order (can you see chicken in the picture? Sarcasm) was ridiculous.

Yelp
They gave it good great deals feed fam cheap. And yes really they fast. And they are med cool

Yelp
****photos are from previous visit***** I have been here before and have not had a negative experience yet, the food has been delicious, prices are reasonable, and service was fair. BUT...Friday night was a different story. I understand that it was a Friday night and it's a busy location, but this was just absolutely insane and a complete 360 from the other times I have been there as well as what I have heard from other people's experiences. I got off late after a 12-hour work day so I was already tired, I called in an order for pickup about 0630 and the woman told me it would be ready in about 30-35 minutes. She didn't take my name, number, or give me an order all she said was "Okay I got you honey bye," which I though okay sounds good they know what they are doing they I will just pick it up by order or something. I got there about 0655ish knowing it was probably not going to be ready yet, except when I got to the door it was PACKED. The employees were working unbelievably hard, and I felt so bad for them, they were doing their absolute best to keep up with the customers inside, phone calls, and online orders. It looked beyond overwhelming. People that were waiting were getting so frustrated as I could hear them saying they had been waiting for over an hour and were getting so mad. People from Grubhub kept walking up asking for their orders because it was taking so long and getting upset with them. One of my biggest problems with Friday nights experience was that the cashier (who was working her butt off like everyone else, I completely acknowledge that) was still answering the phone taking orders telling every person that their order would be ready in 30-35 minutes... As I continuously stood there waiting to pay for my meal, people pushing past me to ask about their orders, I finally sat down because I caught on that the "ready" orders were being placed onto the counter then which they would yell out the name/number/order of what it was. In the entire time I was there, they had set out possibly 10 orders which were mainly taken by grubhub orders. Their lobby was full of 20 plus people standing/sitting inside, standing outside and grubhub orders being taken away mostly. There were people walking in putting in new orders also, it was just a mad house. Other customers were voicing their opinions out loud saying "Lady stop answering the phone and taking orders because you can't even help the customers you have here!" There was confusion on whose order was who, people asking what numbers, what names and then yelling out how long they had been sitting waiting. One of the cooks in the back started to yell becoming really upset that the grubhub people needed to stop getting here so quickly because she was hitting an hour plus on their orders and they were getting here immediately but it wasn't working. I felt truly bad but at 0815 I had left the restaurant because there were more people coming in, no orders being placed out on the counter, and some of us hadn't even been helped to pay for our meal yet. I couldn't even be contacted to let know when it was ready because none of my information was taken. I was beyond disappointed. What can be taken away from all of this? I suppose go way earlier perhaps...prepare to wait if you don't....if you call in get a number or something...or just don't go on the weekend?

Michael M.

Yelp
We live in the Waterford neighborhood and have been ordering from this restaurant ever since they opened, they have been incredibly consistently good and very very fast.

Yelp
We ordered takeout and it was good! The delivery service accurately estimated arrival time. The food was hot and plentiful! We had shrimp with broccoli and mu shu chicken. The broccoli was cooked just right and the shrimp were large and flavorful. The mu shu was good but not great. Positive experience all around.

Titiana D.

Yelp
They steal money from you. They're making a killing and still felt the need to take $20 from me. My order total was $79.98. I get alerts to my phone the minute my card is swiped, and they charged me $99.98. Guess they needed it more than I did. Good food, but I won't be going back.
google avatar

Nicole D.

Yelp
This has been our go-to spot during the pandemic. They've perfected their takeout protocol with food being prepared quickly and correctly every time. and the crab rangoon keep me coming back for more.
google avatar

Terri H.

Yelp
I visited this restaurant for the first time this week. I read the reviews and they were mixed so I thought why not? First impressions, the front door is NASTY, does not look like it's been cleaned in years. I could not find a sanitary grade. Ordered the egg drop soup and it was robust with flavor. They had nothing to drink but Coca Cola. The looks to be all family, no mask and no effort for extra hand sanitizing etc.... My soup was good. If this restaurant would step up there cleaning efforts impressions would be better. Sanitary rating should be visible.

Yelp
I visited Wok & Roll this afternoon, yes another Asian dish that will carry me thru 2 meals. I ordered the Kung Pao Shrimp combo with fried rice and an egg roll. It was very filling and did not disappoint. The counter help staff was pleasant and polite, to me that says a lot. Still more Leland restaurants to taste!!! Enjoy your meal.
google avatar

Melvin H.

Yelp
Wok & Roll is one of those places that is hit or miss, and it's for that inconsistency that I've gone with a 3 Star review of their Establishment. On the good days, its simply delicious "Americanized Asian" restaurant that could easily be a 4 star go to choice restaurant. The steamed dumplings are delicious and the classic entrees are packed and full of taste. The problem is that ever so often the food is just overcooked or not fresh, it's not a usual occurrence here but it does happen. I will continue to eat here ever so often and hope they keep on a positive track and work on their consistency.
google avatar

Ken M.

Yelp
Totally authentic food with great people. This is a must stop spot. Quality and portions are great. Steady parade of regulars tells the story of how good they "roll"
google avatar

Ricky H.

Yelp
Great food and great service. The lady running it is fast as f*** boi. But seriously she is great with her customers, the food tastes great and never disappointed by it.
google avatar

Aaron D.

Yelp
It's really that bad. I've been ordering from this place since I moved to Leland about a year ago. I keep hoping it'll get better, but it keeps getting worse. I keep hoping that they will up their game but it just keeps sinking deeper and deeper. Please try harder. A description of my experience would not help at this time. Maybe a photo. This is one of my chicken on a sticks. The rest of my order was even worse. 2 stars because I have hope. Please try harder.
google avatar

Tamika T.

Yelp
Best Chinese place in Leland! Love the freshness of the food and they are quick! They have a friendly staff as well.
google avatar

Lenzie G.

Yelp
My hubs and I enjoy Wok & Roll for our Chinese food take out! My most common order is the steamed chicken with mixed veggies. The sauce comes on the side and is a dark garlicy sauce that I love. The mixed veggies are always crunchy and typically consist of snow peas, bamboo shoots, small corn, and broccoli. It is a tasty option if you don't want to feel too guilty! The house special rice noodles are also delicious! I love the thin noodles and again, it isn't a dish that is drowned in sauce. It has a very fresh taste and has a great mix of pork, chicken, and shrimp!

Ron F.

Yelp
I ordered Pork Chow Mein from them recently the vegetables were good buyt there was NO pork in the Chow Mein, 99% veggies. Will try another restaurant next time.

Yelp
I've mulled over posting this for a few days, but the bottom line is this is as important to share here as it would be the review I planned to write. On Monday I had business in Brunswick County, which meant I could order some of those amazing crab rangoons made by "Wok and Roll" by Waterford. I'd only had them once before, but they were amazing and I've been searching for someone in Wilmington who made them as good and I've never found anyone who has. I was very excited to order the crab rangoons. When I got home I ate one and it was as delicious as I had remembered, but then I ate more, and much to my shock there was something sharp and pointy in my mouth. It wasn't like a bone, it was odd so I took it out and there was an industrial type staple! Thank God I didn't swallow it. But this was unacceptable. I phoned the restaurant, she remembered me being there and buying the crab rangoons. I told her about the staple and I told her I took a picture and could send it to her, I must say she really did not appear surprised or apologetic. I got another number so I could shoot over the picture but she told me she believed me. That was nice, but that was all she said. I didn't hear back until the next day when she said to give her a call. I texted her back and told her I was very disappointed that she did not make it a priority to get back to me that very night, or offered a refund my order cost, or anything! But while I was waiting for her to offer me a refund or some kind of remuneration it was plainly evident that this could happen to someone else. A friend had also ordered from there and she told me that when they got theirs the box had been stapled shut. In hasn't noticed that. When I looked at my box it too had been stapled shut, and consequently what I think happened was that the person stapled right in to one of the crab rangoons and when I opened the box not knowing, or expecting there to have been staples, the staple was in side the crab rangoon and I didn't see it. Many people eat food from this place, and their food is good, however this is dangerous, it's a dangerous practice and people who visit here who don't know to look for staples in their food before they eat it could very well end up with large hospital bills to fix their stomach, intestine or wherever the heck that's staple would go if swallowed. I have a feeling I'm not the first person who's had this happen but I do want to be the last. Please take a minute to think through what you would have thought when a staple ended up being in your mouthful of food. Possibly all Wok and Roll needs to do is invest in different containers so stables would not be necessary. I just want to share this to warn others about my experience at Work and Roll Waterford.

Yelp
The best Chinese food in town!! We have been ordering from here since 2009. Their delivery driver is pretty quick too.

Ivey H.

Yelp
If you're thinking about eating Chinese food anywhere else seriously reconsider. I'm 5 months pregnant and have been craving Chinese food and I've tried all of the Chinese restaurants around and theyre all over priced and the food is bland and cold we got delivery from here and when I tell you everything was hot and so freshly made and I got the wonton soup and honestly the best wonton soup I have had in years my husband said his food was amazing also he got sesame chicken with vegetable lo mein with an egg roll and I got general Tso's chicken with vegetable lo mein and wonton soup and oh my god im telling you if you want good Chinese food or if you're pregnant like me and really craving THIS place right here
google avatar

Evan T.

Yelp
Definitely not someplace you go to eat in, but as take out Chinese places girl this place is great! -they have the best crab Rangoon's I've ever had -their bourbon chicken is to die for -and the lo mein is fantastic

Danny P.

Yelp
I love the people that work here they are all very friendly and outgoing their food is also really good
google avatar

Chris D.

Yelp
Best crab rangoons I've ever had!! Get take out from here at least twice a month. Hot n' spicy chicken is delicious- it's not fried like my favorite General Tso's chicken, so it should be at least a little healthier, right? It has a little spice kick to it, not too much, and served with peppers and onions. Also a fan of the shrimp chow mei fun- thin, delicate noodles. Bourbon chicken is usually pretty good- had a few times where it's been tough, but flavor was still on point. Service is always pleasant when I call and pick up my order. Definitely my go-to take out place in Leland.

Gabi U.

Yelp
Pros: Ordered through DoorDash; preparation and delivery was fast. Large portion and assortment of veggies! Crab Rangoons were amazinggggg! We ordered Kung Pao 3 flavor, sesame chicken, and crab rangoons. The KP3 chicken and beef had an odd texture, like mushrooms, and lacked individual flavor. There weren't many peanuts either. The shrimp was good. The sesame chicken was a little dry and didn't have that much sauce. The flavor was lackluster. We're going to give it another try, but will order something different next time.
google avatar

Shin L.

Yelp
1. It's super cheap. Less than $10 for a meal. 2. Portions are huge. Easily make two meals out of one 3. If you dine in, food comes out in paper plates. 4. They are fast with making the food.
google avatar

Kristin W.

Yelp
First time ordering this takeout here, but I get Chinese takeout weekly...so was expecting at least mediocre Chinese! All of my fried dumplings were burnt and inedible!!! The chicken rice soup is strangely orange with no scallions in it, and the eggroll was totally different from typical takeout eggrolls. Considering that all of my main dinner was inedible I would not recommend this place. They shouldn't give you food that smells and looks completely burnt to begin with!! Maybe that's why the lady at the counter suggested trying the new seafood place across the street..... Definitely don't recommend this place.....
google avatar

Evan G.

Yelp
Food was all heavily battered, breaded, and super deep fried. My whole place smells like grease. Most of the items were near inedible and went right in the trash. Now I know why it was so inexpensive. Lesson learned. Really gross.
google avatar

Gwen S.

Yelp
I called to let them know my sweet and sour shrimp was so hard that it was inedible the lady told me it was because it had just come out of the freezer. The rice wasn't cooked fresh to order either. My stomach began to hurt and I felt nauseous after one bite. Never will I ever go back to this place. The sanitation grade was a 90. I should've known better. This is what my food came in. As you see on the side my total was 11.27 which isn't bad..but the food was sickening in all honesty.
google avatar

Joan W.

Yelp
I went to this place a month ago. Because of the virus we all had to order outside of the window. I ordered soup and dumplings not fried. When I got home I had the wrong soup and the pumplings were awful. Never again.

Teena M.

Yelp
Ordered for a holiday party the other night. Servings were generous and delicious. Everyone at the party complimented the dishes. I had crab Rangoon, lo me in, special house rice, beef with broccoli, garlic chicken, sweet and sour pork, sesame chicken with all the sauces and fortune cookies I could ask for. Everything was ready at pick up time and it was great.
google avatar

Bill M.

Yelp
Average Chinese food, mainly take out, but they have some tables to eat there, which we did. Large servings, we had to bring home leftovers. Service was quick and friendly. We'll be back for more. This is more authentic Chinese than Six Happiness across the road which is more of a sushi roll restaurant.
google avatar

Robert C.

Yelp
We have enjoyed Chinese food many times at many places in the world. We did not enjoy the food we ordered at Wok & Roll. It was the worst we ever tasted.

Tom E.

Yelp
I have say I was disappointed in my meal, to the point I did not finish. I don't live in the area so I don't know if I happen to catch them on a bad night. I ordered the General Tso's chicken with steamed white rice. The amount of actual chicken I got was small. The tiny chicken bits were covered in a very thick breading so that it appeared the nuggets were sizable, but when you bit into them, you could see you were getting as much breading as meat. It was seasoned okay, good enough to satisfy the masses I suppose, but nothing remarkable or rememberable. The rice is supposed to be steamed but this rice was either very undercooked, or had sat a long time. It was hard and very clumpy and fairly chewy. Additionally, the soft drink I ordered had sat in their refrigerator for so long that it was flavorless and a little flat. They seemed very busy on the phone when I arrived to pick up my order. Maybe they were so busy that they were more interested in just getting orders out the door rather than making it worth a return trip. I'll have to try somewhere else next time I'm here.
