How Montreal Chinese Restaurants Are Serving Takeout For Lunar New Year | Eater Montreal

"The mini chain Wok Café is offering a special full-form radish cake for the holiday (a dim sum favorite that’s otherwise hard to find in Montreal), along with its own version of poon chai and a glutinous rice cake called nian gao — a wordplay meaning a rising year after year in height or wealth." - Ivy Lerner-Frank

The dishes here offer great value for money. I highly recommend their signature Braised Beef Brisket Rice and Sweet and Sour Chicken. The Braised Beef Brisket Rice comes with large, generous pieces of beef. The brisket is tender and well-infused with flavor, without being overly salty or loaded with monosodium glutamate (MSG) — it tastes just like a home-cooked dish. The Sweet and Sour Chicken is also excellent, and kids love it! The restaurant’s interior is clean and tidy, and the open kitchen allows diners to see the cooking process, which makes you feel secure about your meal. I’ll definitely come back again!

The portions are super generous and everything tastes really fresh! The place is clean. It’s one of the good spots to eat asian food in Montreal.

Google
Food is good and also surprisingly at a great price for the portions (pretty big). Combos are nice and affordable as well. Staff is nice. Menu is very diverse and tastes good.

Google
BEST meal ever! I’ve eaten the soup at various restaurants, but by far this is the best I’ve ever had! Omg! And the peanut butter sauce was lit to die for. So fresh and so delicious I loved everything..

Jason was an excellent server at Wok Cafe! Friendly, attentive, and made our dining experience really enjoyable. Highly recommend asking for him when you visit

Been a regular here for over 15 years. It never disappoints. Simple quality food at an affordable price. Ready in 5 min. Such kind service. A+

Google
Very Affordable, great deal takeout! Always with very decent food. I order their daily specials (menu changes) for Takeout from Fantuan and it’s always between 11 to $13 taxes included per meal… usually the food is either enough for me to eat for more than one meal or enough for 2 people, even! Great place! The waiter is always very helpful and greet you with a big smile! I went there 3 times since I worked late this week! 😆Highly Recommended, honestly. 😊

Google
Very good food portions for the price and it tastes pretty good. Ambiance is also great and feels cozy and comfortable. Staff were very welcoming as well!

Yelp
I recently ordered takeout from Wok Café in Montreal through Uber Eats, and overall, it was a satisfying experience with a few highlights and a couple of minor areas for improvement. Video Review will be posted on Tik Tok and Instagram soon @Foxyappetite Here's a breakdown of what I tried: Salt and Pepper Shrimp (Fave) The Salt and Pepper Shrimp is definitely the star of the meal. The shrimp were cooked perfectly--crispy on the outside while staying tender on the inside. The seasoning was spot on: a blend of salty, savory, and a mild heat that was just the right amount of kick. The dish was generously sprinkled with herbs and chili, with crunchy vegetables adding extra flavor and freshness. Even though I got it through delivery, the shrimp stayed crispy, which can sometimes be a challenge with takeout. This dish alone would make me order again. Vegetable Fried Rice (Very Good) The Vegetable Fried Rice was another strong point. The rice was fluffy and well-seasoned, with a nice wok char that gave it a great depth of flavor. The vegetables (peas, carrots, and bell peppers) were fresh and retained their crunch, which was appreciated. It wasn't greasy, which I liked, and it felt light but filling at the same time. It paired perfectly with the shrimp. However, I did add soy sauce and seasoning from home to give it a touch more depth, but it was still very good. Tofu The tofu was decent, though it wasn't as exciting as the other dishes. The texture was soft and smooth, and it absorbed the sauce well, but it lacked a little bit of the crispiness that would have given it an extra dimension. The sauce was mild but flavorful, and it complemented the tofu nicely, but I would have loved a bit more of a punch. Still, it's a good option for those looking for a vegetarian choice, and the portion size was generous. Spring Rolls The spring rolls were crispy and arrived well-packed, without getting soggy, which is always a plus with takeout. The filling was mostly vegetables and had a nice crunch, but the flavors could have been a bit bolder. The dipping sauce was sweet and tangy, but I felt it needed a little more kick or complexity. Overall, they were a solid appetizer, but not the standout of the meal. Takeout Experience As with any takeout order, the quality of the food can sometimes be affected by delivery, but Wok Café did a great job of packaging everything carefully. The food was still warm when it arrived, and everything was well-sealed to prevent leaks or spills. Overall Wok Café is definitely a great option for Asian comfort food through Uber Eats. The Salt and Pepper Shrimp is the standout here and a must-try. The Vegetable Fried Rice was flavorful and well-balanced, making it a great side dish. The Tofu was good but could use a bit more texture or flavor. The Spring Rolls were solid but not as impressive as the other items. The meal was satisfying, and I would definitely order from Wok Café again, especially for their shrimp and fried rice. If you're craving bold flavors and comforting, hearty dishes, this is a reliable spot.

Yelp
I love wok cafe for any kind of experience. Dine in is great. They have an amazing menu. I often get take out Thai aubergine dish and it is not over spiced. They are also very fast and reasonable with their prices.

Yelp
At the old Royal Victoria hospital, I used to order from Wok cafe often. Once wok cafe catered a bridal shower for my friend that I organized for 100 people. Yesterday, I ate the restaurant for the second time. The service as always super quick. I won't say that they are friendly and caring. It's strictly business. My all time favorite dish there is Thai style Eggplant curry, and over the years this dish remains as good it was and is. Tried their steamed dumplings. They were nice and good, but there was no sauce offered. I used my eggplant curry to dip the dumplings. Hot and sour soup was at its perfection mode. I lessened few stars because after all the years had passed the restaurant looks like a dump. The chairs and tables are in bad conditions. The placement of sitting are to close to each other. It was hard to get out my table with pushing the customer behind me. I think it's long overdue to revamp the look of the restaurant.

Yelp
Best general tao chicken I have had in Montreal. It's my go to place when I am craving for Chinese food. Their thai chicken is also great :) Given it's pandemic now I have ordered several dishes couple of times through Uber eats and I was never disappointed

Burt S.

Yelp
A $11.95 on the menu means $14 before tax on the bill, nice! After I pointed it out, they said there're some mistakes on the menu, oh I don't think so. And apparently, according to some previous reviews, it's not the first time that they are doing this. I guess they're just sneakily charging extras and hoping you don't find out.

Joyce N.

Yelp
The prices are relatively low but you definitely get what you pay for. The food is very bland and the beef ribs were extremely dry. There is only one waitress for the whole restaurant so the service is not that quick for a Chinese restaurant. I would unfortunately not recommend.

Yong Jin K.

Yelp
food is ok. But the cashier adds tips on the bill pretending he does not know it. Dont make yourself dumb.

Yelp
Great place for late night meal! After party and everything else are closed, this place open till 1AM. Their meal portions are HUGE! The taste so-so but you can complain with the price.
google avatar

Brynn W.

Yelp
Doesn't look like much upon initial glance and is one of the only restaurants open until 3 am in the area - however, be prepared to eat a large as hell portion of delicious wok for a super affordable price. The older man who works there is very sweet and an awesome dude! rock on!

Trinity G.

Yelp
Worse ever no vegetables in soup Waiter is wack didn't even offer something else for 10$ worse soup ever and he said I'll ad sprouts he added like 10!! Worse place in Montreal honestly Never go there it's not worth it at all

Yelp
This is a typical American Chinese restaurant. I've ordered a dim sum combo, a Singapore noodle combo and a sesame beef combo. A combo is a choice of soup or spring roll and a main dish with rice or noodle. There was a hair with my dim sum combo. They've promptly changed the dim sum. Appetizers came really quick. The hot and sour soup was delicious, I can say the same for the spring roll. Just meh. The sesame beef is not amazing. A little dry. The Singapore noodles were good and it was a big portion. I would add that the manager of this place is not really nice. There was even a party of 2 who even decided to leave this place after talking with her. When we paid, the manager ask us how much we will give tips by typing herself with the machine. This way who can't decide how much we will give. A little cheap attitude, just like this place.

Yelp
The only way I can describe this place is...Garbage. If I could I'd give it a negative 5, everything my friends and I ordered were bland, cold, and odd looking. Weirdest thing was that the orange beef was made with general Tao sauce and general Tao was made with the orange beef sauce. Literally a failing restaurant, dirty, bad interior, bad staff, and the lady was extremely rude. Not gonna lie, lowkey thought I was in a kitchen nightmare

Richard M.

Yelp
Found this place a few years ago while in town visiting. Reasonable prices and the food is good. Perfect spot to grab lunch while walking around downtown

La Y.

Yelp
Very disappointing service. Was seated close to the kitchen area and couldn't believe what I saw. When my General Tao dish was prepped and ready, the owner Susan passed by and took a large piece of chicken for herself. Maybe she had just started her shift and wanted a quick bite to eat, but that is a big 'no no'. Bad enough that most people can't see how their food is prepped, but when you see such entitled behaviour...bad practice.

Amer M.

Yelp
For prices you are looking to be affordable, they have great tasty valued dishes...However tonight, they made lose my time for over one hour and forty-five minute to deliver food from a few blocks away without any communication from the restaurant. Really shame to keep a client that long without admitting a mistake or even apologizing. They just lost a customer
google avatar

Snow C.

Yelp
Their service was really, really bad; and they will force you to pay high tip.... If you rejected, they shouted at you. Unbelievable rude attitude. Nevertheless, their food was not clean, not fresh....it was a really bad decision for me to go there.

Yelp
On our way to Kanbai we decided to try Wok Cafe instead since we were in the mood to try something different. (We love Kanbai and I highly recommend it for legit Szechuan.) Where to start with Wok Cafe? Well let's start with the food. It is bland, re-heated or defrosted and will give you stomach pains after a dish or two. The dirty kitchen and floors might be to blame for that or the very low prices which reflect the lack of quality/fresh ingredients being used. Seriously, I wonder if they would pass a health inspection judging by all the old newspapers on the ground and the moldy floors. It's not a well kept establishment. The service.. about what we expect from a Chinese restaurant which means basic and quick service, no frills and no smiles. Up to par there until the lady grunted and seemed really unhappy that she was only getting $1 tip on a $30 order. After paying she caught up to my wife to complain and asked for more tip. Unbelievable but true. Yes we didn't tip well but that's because I was getting sick from their food and barely ate because of it. Anyway, avoid at all cost. Walk a few more steps, go to Kanbai and enjoy a good meal. Wok Cafe is bad... and dirty. Food: 1.5 Service: 1.0 Value: 3 toilet flushes

Yelp
Yeah Im usually around this place whenever TM-soup is closed, Food is okay just about whatver you get is what you pay for. Service is fast, food is prompt and thats about it. The whole experience is just walk in get seated right away(assuming no line up rush) eat, and leave. Pretty much so. I only order the regular General Tao as I dont want to experiement much in these places but overlooking the grungy appeal the place is good for a late night snack as most places are closed. I stick to their fried rices and general tao and im good to go. Prices average, a quick hit and run here is about 35-40 tip inclu.

Yelp
Ordered the General Tao Tofu... I thought perhaps someone had chopped up a bath sponge and served it too me; , the tofu was boiled (and boiled, and boiled) so it came out full of water; terrible tasting water which diluted the sauce and made it inedible. Our group had three tofu dishes and they were all equally bad. They did remove the dish from our bill though. Two stars based on service alone.

Yelp
Avoid this place if you can. Bad customer service, and bad food. Everything doesn't taste fresh, and or is just not cooked as well as other places. This place has become a running joke for my friends and I.

Yelp
Despite the bad reviews below, I've been going there for years and love it! As a student, the price is very reasonable and the plates are huge. I always have a good amount of leftovers that I bring home. The servers aren't the best servers ever, but I've never had a problem with them. They've never been rude with me or i've never felt not welcomed. Whenever i'm downtown and want Chinese food I always go there without hesitation.
google avatar

Naznaz N.

Yelp
It is definitely a cheap "restaurant". You should definitely not eat your food there, but let's be honest, for 20$ you get a soup, a meal, rice and vegetables. You can't expect a fine cuisine dining with that price; but the food is actually pretty tasty overall. You should do a takeout or delivery for a night with not so much high expectations and you'll enjoy it :)
google avatar

Victor L.

Yelp
The reason why i have one star was because of their convenient hours. However, the server pointed to where we should sit and was dismissive. We were there pretty early so I guess the food taking longer than usual to come out was due to the kitchen just opening up. The food itself, 3 out of the 3 dishes were really bland. I understand everyone has different pallets but all of us (3 people) unanimously agreed on the lack of depth in the food. Upon checkout another server counted the money in front of us after we told her we were all set. Not the best experience.

Yelp
DO NOT...I REPEAT DO NOT EAT HERE!!! Had a friend visiting montreal, was out and about and stopped to grab a quick bit to eat... worst mistake I ever made. We cared not about the decor which is minimal at best. We just wanted some tasty simple food. We sat, and waited forever!!!!!!!!! while the people behind us, who came in 20 mins after us were served. Our food to say the least was absolutely disgusting. His chow Mein had 4 different textured noodles on his plate, ranging from slimy and hot to deep fried and cold. To be honest his food looked like they took a bunch of left overs other people didnt eat and put it on his plate and served him. I ordered some black bean chicken, and found some hard round object in my rice about the size of a gumball. the sauce for the chicken, tasted as though it had been burned in plastic, then reheated and plated. They first attempted to get me to pay for this food, that not even a bit was swallowed. Then agreed that the food was substandard. Needless to say this was by far the worst dinning experience I have ever had. I wouldnt reconmend this food to a rat, let alone a human being.

Mohit A.

Yelp
Poor Restaurant with ill-mannered staff. Not recommended. Save your time and money go elsewhere. I ordered a Combo Gen Tao Tofu and a Thai Curry - Thai Curry was pathetic, tasted wierd, was not even edible - Gen Tao Tofu was bad as well like it was not fresh, so chewy like gum - The spring rolls were good The worst was the service, so rude and disrespectful staff - I asked for water without ice and the lady just went by and started taking other people's order as if we did not exist - I asked for the Thai curry to be spicy and it was not, on asking her she was so rude and said this is how we make it. I had to tell her her again that I specifically ordered it to be spicy before she too it like she would throw it on chef's face - The tofu was so chewy almost like gum or elastic so I asked them that I dont think it is fresh and the waiter was so rude started saying you are wrong, you are not a good customer and what not The manager seemed courteous enough to say we can make another one(trying to explain the hard and soft tofu's) but with such disrespectful staff I had to say no thankyou. The manager asked us to not pay for the order since we did not like it and did not even take 2 bites. I wish his staff as half as polite and courteous as him. Try other restaurants, many much better and similarly priced but not this one.

Yelp
My perspective is from somebody who likes asian cuisine, and Toronto has many of them. I asked the waiter what he would recommend / if there was something good. The server recommended the combos (which i would describe as, things you offer to non-Asian diners.) You get a bit of rice, some heated vegetables, and a protein (lemon chicken.) I added some shrimp dumplings to my order because i was hungry. My traveling partner ordered a plate of shrimp rice. Comes in the color brown. Verdict. Its Chinese food, a step up from what you would get at a shopping mall. But if they were good at something, the waiter didn't direct me to order it. At least they are fast at making the food. But its nothing to get excited about.

Marjana U.

Yelp
Worst food and service ever. The food is pure crap, awful general tao and chowmein. The chowmein was dry and flavorless. Also, the general tao, i have had way better than here, didn't even finish 1 quarter of the rubbish food. The lady who served us was horrible. No smile at all, and worst part during taking our orders she got a phone call and went right away while I was speaking to her about our order, and came back after almost 5mins. Disgustinh.
google avatar

Sydney R.

Yelp
I got the vegetarian dim sum combo but what I really got was 4 mediocre Americanized dishes. The portions are huge for the price but more comfort food/greasy and not what I was craving or expecting.
google avatar

Nato L.

Yelp
I read the reviews on Yelp just before stepping into this mess of a resto, thinking it can't be that bad, I was really craving asian food after all... I ended up chewing on funny smelling hard beef cuts served with anemic vegetables and the driest, dullest rice I've ever had... I love discovering cheap and good food, but this place has neither. The prices are slightly higher than what you pay for your mall food, and what you get to eat is just unacceptable by any standards.

Matt C.

Yelp
Went here because it was a rainy Tuesday, and Kazu - across the street - was closed. I usually don't experiment with the food at these types of places, but even the General Tao was iffy, as was the salad it came with - emaciated, thawed leaves served in a watered down sauce of some sort. Terrible. We didn't leave much of a tip, just whatever change we had left. Our waitress took the tip, gave it a stern look, and promptly threw it on the ground (!!!), yelling, "No tip!." Yea, I won't be back.
google avatar

Sabrina N.

Yelp
Don't expect luxury when you walk into this place. It's a small hole in the wall where the waitresses answer their cells while taking your order and give you dirty looks if you stay too long. But for $7 you can have a HUGE plate of really tasty Chow Mein and leave there completely stuffed and ready to take a nap. I enjoy this place. Their general Tao is apparently what they are known for but because I'm not a huge fan of General Tao, I wouldn't know however I've had a few of their dishes and they have all been quite tasty!! If you're in the area, I would definitely suggest dropping in.
google avatar

Tibergula Le Glouton G.

Yelp
I'm not sure about the other locations but the service at this place is unbelievable our server went from the cash to the phone to mopping the floors then serving our food with out even washing her hands once (EWWW) and this place would need a flood to clean out the mess and lingering dirt . we strolled in the location at 11:15pm (munchies) and were rushed to make our order and hurry up and eat because they wanted to close at 12pm. I'll sum it up like this this is a take out joint because the dieing experience isn't catered in this Wok Cafe. oh the Pad Thai is out of intergalacticly out of this world and is to die for !
google avatar

Michael G.

Yelp
Without a doubt the worst Chinese food I ever ate. I ordered the General Tso and the chicken was very rubbery and didn't taste like chicken. Absolutely disgusting.
google avatar

Nilani U.

Yelp
Ordered the "General Tao Chicken" which came with the rice, vegetables and the choice of either the spring roll or soup, which I chose wonton. The food came quick, but didn't taste too good. Wasn't cooked well. The staff were nice but a bit pushy at the end on tipping them even more money. This place is only good if you're super hungry and willing to eat anything.
google avatar

Alejandro A.

Yelp
One of the best places for General Tao Chicken. Quick service but unfortunately I felt like the servers were angry at me or something. I don't know what I did to upset them but after eating the general tao chicken I no longer cared or even remembered feeling like that.
google avatar

Yelp
Great chinese food. If you are looking for some fast hot and tasty chinese this is the place to go. Not expensive and easier to get to than chinatown...

Ross M.

Yelp
I guess you get what you pay for. Makes mall food seem like gourmet cuisine. It would be difficult in blind taste test to tell difference between General Tao chicken and sesame beef. Lots of bland sauce.

Simon K.

Yelp
Unfortunately, the Wok Cafe does not stand out with the other asian restaurant nearby. Although service is quick, the food quality is lacking for the price paid. I got wonton soup with curry beef dish. The wonton (pork) soup is not bad, but nothing special. The main course is lacking in flavour. The curry is diluted so much, and the beef lacked any seasoning. The rice tasted reheated (cold in certain sections). The vegetables were okay. Also, the place just feels very dirty, and no one seems to care. My plate was chipped at two corners, and my table still had some sticky spots. Overall, there are some many other alternatives nearby.

Christopher S.

Yelp
We were a group of four and ordered delivery I ordered the chicken and broccoli and it tasted like I was eating a rubber band. Everyone else said the food tasted the same.

Amir A.

Yelp
Cheap asian food, tastes ok, not the greatest tbh. Fast service, plenty of room to sit, but I would recommend looking elsewhere if you want asian food, plenty of other choices around.

T S.

Yelp
yuck! eww! impossible to eat , the soups taste like crap , smells horrible . The sesame beef was purple and impossible to chew! avoid this place! run!
