San Francisco’s New Restaurant Openings - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Wok Up in Lakeside is a casual Chinese restaurant serving dim sum, noodle soups, and cha chaan teng classics like baked pork chop rice and milk tea. They also have a short dessert selection including Portuguese egg tarts. We checked out Wok Up and added it to the Hit List." - julia chen 1, patrick wong

The Hit List: New San Francisco Restaurants To Try Right Now - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"This freshly hatched cha chaan teng in Lakeside Village is ripe for a visit, partly because there aren’t many places in SF where you can get a bubbling plate of cream-laden pork chop rice, a steamer of ready-to-burst soup dumplings, and a couple of Portuguese egg tarts for less than $30. Another selling point: efficient service means you can be in and out in just as many minutes. The meal might have its chaotic moments, between dishes going to the wrong tables and high-tension conversations spilling out of the open kitchen, but it’s all part of the charm." - julia chen 1, patrick wong, lani conway

The Best Cha Chaan Tengs In SF - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Most of the city’s cha chaan tengs are in Chinatown, the Richmond, and Sunset, but Wok Up is an outlier. Behind its closed doors on the quiet stretch of the city that is Lakeside Village is a slightly chaotic dining room where families who possess little volume control maximize table space with huge plates of bubbling pork chop rice and chow fun. While far from a relaxing meal, you’re here to talk loudly, inhale food, and inevitably ask for a to-go box." - patrick wong, julia chen 1

8/8/25 1400hrs. I stopped at PepBoys to service my car. Decided to have lunch while car in service. I ordered beef and broccoli and House fried rice $27.22. It seems like a lot of money but I just went with it. After the food came out, I realized my ordering was not the best, but I was assuming she would give me a small portion since I was the only person walking in the door. Portions are for about 3 to 4 people. Well priced and well served. Food was extremely tasty and cooked to perfection. I will definitely be stopping by again. Next time I visit Pep Boys. my only downfall was it was too warm for my comfort level. I wish they had cold AC blowing, which is a reason why I gave them a four star review on the atmosphere.

Google
Really quick delivery! We have ordered from Wok Up several times in the past few years. The doughnuts are a must for dessert imo, perfectly cooked. Sesame chicken was our favorite, MO FuN was ok but not much flavor, and the fried rice was a small variety of rice but not small on flavor. 2 free egg rolls were included! Not out of the park, but a great Chinese food restaraunt that has easy online ordering.

Google
This place had amazing food- my friend and I got the Beef with Garlic and the Mongolian Beef. Normally, I expect Chinese food to be overcooked or overspiced- not an issue here. My personal favorite part of both dishes? The diversity- same meat, totally different flavour! My dish was so refreshing that I honestly liked the vegetables the most, and the rice was perfectly springy and delicious. If you eat here, you'll be more than a happy camper, that's for sure!

Extremely rude customer service!!!! As soon as I walked in the lady was in rush half her head was in the kitchen and the other half out of the kitchen , she didn’t even say hi how are you? How can I help you? Absolutely nothing! She just said what do you want what do you want….. for here or to go, very very rude. I’m very sick and needed it the hot soup and i walked out without ordering anything . Those people need to be learn some manners and be professional and polite. We are paying their paycheck. if you have some respect for yourself, don’t step into the store. I wish I could give them zero star.

Yelp
I saw a one star rating and was shocked and felt compelled to write my own review. I should have done it already but here we are lol. I LOVE THIS PLACE! I eat Wok Up at least 2-3 times a month. They are always welcoming and the food is great! Fresh, hot and a great value for the money. Shrimp egg foo Young and Mongolian beef is my fav!

Yelp
On the nights where cooking is definitely the last thing we want to do, we call up Wok Up! We've been coming here for the last few years and have enjoyed it every time. Service is always fast and wonderful. Our typical order (not all at once... some times) - Orange chicken - Beef Broccoli - Sweet and sour pork - Shrimp Fried Rice (it's big shrimp too) - Egg Drop Soup - Egg rolls - Crab Puffs - Chicken Lo Mein

Alex F.

Yelp
Always an absolute great meal when I come in. Service was excellent. Establishment is very clean and a great all around family restaurant. You'll love this place. Beef lo mein, general tso chicken and fried rice are always my go to. The sweet n sour chicken is very crispy and fresh.

Yelp
I decided I'm going to start doing hot and sour soup reviews lol. I stopped in here while I was waiting for my meal at Dave's Hot Chicken which is right next door. The restaurant was not overly busy but it was clean and the service was friendly. I ordered the hot and sour soup and it came out quickly. It was moderately priced but it was a nice size portion so I didn't have any problems with the price at all. I brought the soup all the way back to my house and split it with my wife it was enough for two bowls. The soup was still steaming hot when we got to the dinner table. Which is amazing. They serve the soup with a side of the fried wontons which is really impressive. I think the wontons add such a layer of complexity to the soup and flavor. I would say with the wontons this soup is one of my favorites in the east valley. The soup definitely warrants giving the food a try one of these days too. I would highly recommend stopping here and seeing what you think.

Yelp
Our go to Chinese restaurant. We live super close, the food arrives quickly, and always delicious. The best deal is the family sized meals for lotsa left overs. Yum.

Yelp
This is it! I ordered Chinese food late at night from Grubhub and I LOVED the food. I got an orange chicken plate with white rice, and i got an egg roll with it. I also ordered egg drop soup and it was TOTALLY worth it! Get your bang for your buck! Huge portions! My delivery was not good but the food made up for it. Definitely cannot wait to order again!

Yelp
This place is delicious! Just saw it while passing by the area and I am SO GLAD I did! All the food we got was amazing, even the fortune cookies. We did a pick up order and it was ready on time and still super fresh! I added in the caption what we got so you can see the photos. I HIGHLY recommend you go if you haven't tried it and I encourage EVERYONE to go in and order and take the time to share with friend this place deserves to be a local spot everyone knows about!

Kimberly T.

Yelp
Okay I have to update my review because I ordered it yesterday and IT WAS PERFECT. I noted extra crispy and it was perfectly cooked, crisp on the outside and perfect tofu on the inside! I'm glad I tried it again and I'm glad I didn't just write it off because I love the orange tofu from wok up and maybe the few times before it was just a fluke. BEST ORANGE TOFU IN ARIZONA! I'll be ordering again this week because it's that good and I've missed it!

Yelp
Worst experience ever. This is the 2nd time that Wok-up driver has delivered our food to the wrong house on our street. The first time (last week) I saw the delivery lady knocking on doors 2 houses away so I caught her in time. This time she actually gave my food to my neighbor and left. When I called to check on my order & they realized they mis-delivered my food, the delivery drive actually drove back empty handed to tell me I would have new food in 50mins. She was more concerned with getting paid by the neighbors for the food they ate. When he manager came with my food (now 90mins after I ordered) he was also more concerned with getting paid by my neighbors before he would give me my food. After he handed me my food he got upset that no one had the original receipt, and actually attempted to snatch my food out of my hands! Luckily he didn't succeed, but he proceeded to get upset and hostile over the missing receipt. The delivery driver had to physically restrain her manager/boyfriend and shove him back into his blue BMW. He then proceeded to use curse words outside my house and scream "well you don't orda n-e-moa den! " and sped down my street really fast, honking his horn. (Because I asked the delivery driver to be quiet for my sleeping baby originally) He almost physically assaulted me while trying to take the food back that he should have been refunding me for. I got no apologies from wok-up, only hostility and mediocre microwaved Chinese food I could have bought atCostco. I'll never eat their food again. Trust me, it's not even above average. Order from Orient Sushi instead. It's way better anyways. This is a picture of the delivery lady frozen with confusion, waiting for her boss to make the situation much worse than it already was.

Yelp
Fantastic Chinese food! For the people like me, who value delicious protein at an affordable price, this is the place! CHICKEN AND RICE BABY! And it's amazing! I also love that they keep hot sauce on the table (trust me I used it lol). I'm definitely adding this place to my weekly lunch rotation!

Dean Ditchoff ..

Yelp
Had the Mongolian beef. It was fantastic! Will definitely go back for more. Love this place. Family run business.

Yelp
The food here was pretty good. If your looking for Chinese takeout, delivery, and or a good Chinese spot to dine in at, come here! It's definitely a small local business and if I'm correct, I believe it was the owners who were the ones cooking and serving on the day we stopped by. The lady was very friendly and attentive! We ordered the family meal which included a large soup, four egg rolls, four wontons, three large entree dishes, and two plates of rice for $30!! We waited some time for our food to be ready but the soup came out right away first. The egg rolls and wontons were hot and crispy and very filling! The entrees were delicious. We went with the kung pao chicken, chicken with broccoli, and some orange chicken. We were also given two big plates of rice. One was fried rice and the other plate was white steamed rice. The food was delicious and we had more then enough to take on home. Food was great and so was the service! We will definitely be back again! Located across the street from Walmart and in the same plaza as the tire shop.

Yelp
This place is amazing best Chinese food I have ever had!! Everything is delicious and fresh and tastes amazing!!

Yelp
Nice and roomy restaurant, staff was friendly but the food was mediocre at best. Ordered Kung pao chicken and beed with broccoli... very disappointed that Chinese food could be that bad....

Yelp
Great quality food. I got the beef and vegetables and the coconut soup make sure to ask for meat in the soup because it's just vegetables. Fresh quality ingredients and good customer service!!

Yelp
I would give this place 6 stars if I could! We ordered last night and were pleased with everything. The crab puffs were delish and actually had a good amount of filling unlike other restaurants. The beef lo mein was absolutely incredible, will be ordering every time I return. And the general tso's chicken was also amazing, perfect level of spicy! Portions were big and super fair pricing. Food was ready quickly and the service was great. Our new go-to Chinese restaurant, can't wait to order again!!

Yelp
You may be as confused by the very good and very bad reviews as I was, and questioning which ones to trust more. Here's an honest review from an initially wary customer: NOTE: When you pull up to the storefront there is a big grand opening sign that looks new and implies that the restaurant recently changed management. This immediately made me disregard all reviews older than a month or so. FOOD: The taste and quality of the food here was amazing. This is the Chinese food I've been searching for the 8 years I've lived in Mesa. The General Tso's & Orange Chicken had perfectly cooked white meat in very flavorful sauces and served with sticky white rice. The Beef & Broccoli had extremely tender meat and vegetables and none of the stringy or fatty gristle that can sometimes ruin a dish. The egg rolls were also very good - crispy and filled with lots of meat. SERVICE: we ate in the restaurant and were immediately seated in a booth of our choice. We received menus, drinks and cutlery right away. The staff were all very attentive, helpful and respectful during our time there. AMBIANCE: the restaurant is a quiet space with a row of booths and a row of tables. Everything we encountered seemed clean, tidy and well- organized. It's a casual place without much decoration, but hey, you're really there to look at the food or pickup takeout anyway. Give this place a chance and see for yourselves!

Yelp
Doing a day trip out here and found them on Yelp. Everything was very good.?we had curry chicken, orange chicken and lemon chicken. Egg drop soup and hot & sour soup very good.

Yelp
Came to wok Up based upon Star Rating I asked for spicy chicken lo mein and received half portion with onion only no vegetables and they said they don't use vegetables in their lo mein. Please save your money and find an alternate location for your Chinese feast

Yelp
Prices going up for the same or less quality. Last truly . Or food containers tasted like soap.
google avatar

Yelp
A quaint store, seems like it's family run. Featured a big menu with options spanning soups, noodles, and meat dishes. We got the steamed pork dumplings, Mongolian beef, and Szechuan chicken and rice was provided on the sides. Dumplings were good and I enjoyed the Mongolian beef which was well seasoned. Only complaint would be the ratio of beef to onions was a little low. Same thing with the Szechuan chicken - the flavor was there, however not very strong. Overall affordable place with decent food and good portion sizes.
google avatar

Yelp
Delivery was quick, food came fresh and for only 2 dollar delivery fee. Can't be that really. I had the orange chicken and my bf the lo mein. Everything was cooked to perfection and we will recommend and definitely be back.

Yelp
I cannot judge the interior of the the facility as I have never stepped foot in this establishment. I ordered delivery to my work. The delivery was prompt, and correct. I ordered two meals, the lo mein and the pad Thai, the lo mein was on the lunch special. Total was twenty bucks delivered before tip. The lo mein noodles were great and the chicken was super tasty and all white meat. I got the fried rice and it came with soup too, for delivery that is amazing! Usually its "no soup for you!!" when you order togo or delivery. The soup was really good and came piping hot. The fried rice I liked alot because it had a LOT of egg in it (YAAAY!!). Now, the bad....dun dun dun....I should have some blame here, what idiot orders pad Thai from a Chinese restaurant? Oh that's right. this girl. FML. The absolute worst pad Thai EVER. I mean, it was ten bucks and the whole thing went in the trash. The wrong noodles were used, there was no sauce, no flavor and so terrible. It had a boat load of inedible vegetables and was soooo dry. I think eating a piece of sidewalk chalk would have been about fair for comparison to this completely lackluster, tasteless, dry junk. That about sums it up. Order Chinese food from a Chinese restaurant. Order Thai food from a Thai restaurant. Lesson learned :)

Yelp
Overall disappointed with my Wok Up experience due to customer service. I ordered takeout online and got mapo tofu, rice, the Chinese donuts, and hot and sour soup. When I see a Chinese restaurant with mapo tofu in the menu, I typically order it since it is a tasty, spicy dish and not very common like General Tso chicken or something like that. Mapo tofu is traditionally made with meat even though it is a tofu dish and in tofu or vegetarian sections of US Chinese restaurant menus. In my comments for my online order, I wrote to add pork to the mapo tofu dish. I usually have to add a dollar or two by adding a modification so I expected a slightly higher charge when I went to the restaurant. I arrived and the order was ready on time and already bagged up. The restaurant had the entrance blocked into a little vestibule due to Covid-19 and there was a woman handing out the orders and taking payments. My order was the same price from online. The woman said that they saw the comment about adding pork but didn't do it. When I asked why, the excuse that she gave was that adding pork to the mapo tofu wouldn't make it taste good. I replied that my family typically makes mapo tofu with meat and it tastes great. That customer service and poor excuse really seemed off putting. I went home and ate the food which otherwise came out well. The Chinese donuts were hot and fresh. Hot and sour soup was delicious as well. The mapo tofu could have used pork but oh well.

Yelp
Wonton soup was good but the vegetable spring rolls were mushy and the crab puffs were way too sweet .. won't be going back

Yelp
My family and I came to Arizona for a Father's Day baseball tournament this past weekend. After winning the championship we headed home to our Airbnb. The question of the night arises...What's for dinner? After some research on Yelp I decided on Wok Up. I'm so glad they took my order at 9:15 pm even though they close at 9:30 pm. The food is priced quite reasonably and everything is wok'ed up fresh when you order. P.S. Get the lettuce wraps...tasty.

John B.

Yelp
Been coming to this place for the past few months and first off I want to say that the food here is really delicious ...the owners are very nice people don't speak much but we are always happy to give back to small businesses...the prices are really good for great food ...the place is clean for a small area ....nice little hidden gem
google avatar

Yelp
This is my last time coming here.. I've had small issues before but nothing like this.. you lost a long time customer that felt with your mistakes.. no more. Beyond garbage food.

Garrett A.

Yelp
Hands down the worst chinese food I have ever had. I typically try a new place ever few weeks and this was pure garbage. No flavor, over priced, pure garbage. Save your money and go to Mcdonalds instead, I wish I did and I hate fast food...

Maria C.

Yelp
Great food, prepared fresh, good portions. The lady who helped me was nice. Would definitely recommend.

Wyatt C.

Yelp
Great service, very friendly, and food was great. Kung Pao, and orange chicken were great as well as crab puffs. Will be going back again for sure.

Yelp
This is the best Asian cuisine I've had this far. It's always fresh and the portions are huge for the price. Delivery is cheap and quick how can you beat that? I will always come here for my late night fix. You'll definitely see me wok up.

Yelp
Absolutely HORRIBLE, we just called them because they over charged our card for 5.00, they gave is an excuse and said they were going to call their credit merchant to see what happened. When they called us back they said that it was correct, when we kicked back and said it wasn't correct WE HAVE the receipt and that we wanted to talk to the credit card company, she gave us a number and I called it while my husband was still talking to her, a male answered the phone with hello....... I said who is this he said hello, I told my husband that this wasn't a credit card merchant, the lady put us on hold called the same number I called, when he came on the phone they REFUSED to speak English. If you don't want them taking extra money for crappy food DO NOT GO TO THIS RESTAURANT. I WILL ALSO BE FILLING A COMPLAINT WITH THE AG AND BBB.
google avatar

Esther B.

Yelp
When we arrived, we were told someone else had picked up our food. They asked if we could wait 10 minutes and they would get our order. The woman who mistakenly took our food returned with it shortly thereafter. The cashier attempted to give us the food the woman just returned. The cashier became irritated when we refused to take the returned order. We had to wait another 10 minutes for them to ACTUALLY remake our order. We will not be returning.

myles g.

Yelp
Ordered pad Thai if you want to call it that. And the house special mei fun. Bland and terrible my dog wouldn't even need it Don't recommend save your time. Unfortunately they let this food be served to paying customers. Never again. Probably the worst food I've ever had

Yelp
Just finished lunch here and was very pleasantly surprised. Only stopped in due to being in the neighborhood and had no expectations. The food was excellent, portions generous, prices reasonable and service incredibly good. I would recommend. We had the General Tso's chicken and the beef chow mei fun.

Yelp
I waited a day to write this after my issue. We don't order asian food delivery......ever. Tonight we did a quick yelp search and found Wok Up 2 miles away. Delivery said 45-60 minutes and was at my door in 12 minutes. We ordered Orange chicken, veggie fried rice, veggie lo mein, crab puffs and coconut spicy soup. Everything was good except the soup. We each took a spoonful and it wasn't good. It almost tasted as if something was wrong with it. I set it aside and for the first time ever, I returned the soup. They were very courteous and polite about it and refunded my $7 for the soup. THAT WAS GREAT. With that, I will continue to return to Wok up and look forward to trying more of their dishes.

Rihanna D.

Yelp
The restaurant was very pleasant. I went with my boyfriend, and the workers were very welcoming. We ordered to go, so we sat down in an empty booth waiting. I ordered the egg-drop soup and the shrimp fried rice, while my boyfriend ordered the crab puffs filled appetizer. I usually dislike the crab puffs, as the taste of the cream cheese is very unappealing to me, but these ones were so good! There was so much crab which was amazing! They were cooked delightfully, being crunchy while still creamy. My shrimp fried rice was amazing, I haven't had any that good in a long time. As it was my first time trying egg-drop soup, it was a bit of a strange texture to get used to, but it was so delicious! Everything taste so good, and the ambiance was nice too! I didn't feel rushed while taking a while to search the menu, or any other time, and the lady working there was so sweet that she even brought her to go order over to our table! Super beautiful place, would definitely recommend to anyone nearby!

Yelp
First and last time experience, I ordered the Roasted Pork & Vegetable dish which was horrible....the roasted pork taste like it had been and boiled to reheat and the flavor of spoiled meat. I also order the special fried rice which had no flavor even close to fried rice and very little content besides the fried rice, the entire order had 1shrimp and very little of anything else. I am very hesitant about using home delivery and drive through facilities, this was a lesson well learned. The only reason I gave this business 2 stars is because the timely delivery. No repeat customer here, you guys struck out.

Yelp
I came to Wok Up back in November when I visiting my relatives for Thanksgiving, but never got a chance to write a review. I was recommended to Wok Up by a relative of mine when I said I wanted some authentic Chinese food. This place did not disappoint! Customer Service (5 stars) The customer service here is great, the waiters are very attentive and very sweet. I had trouble deciding on what to order, which means I was staring at the menu for quite some time. The waiter was very patient with me and even recommended me their popular dishes! Food (5 stars) I had the spicy coconut soup. I was very hesitant in ordering this since I can't handle extremely spicy food, but this was not that spicy at all! It was spicy enough to taste but not too overpowering. I would highly recommending this especially on a cold night. The beef broccoli was so delicious! There were perfect amount of sauce to have the perfect flavor. The beef was cooked just right, it was not overcooked unlike the other Chinese restaurants around the area. The food portion is decent especially for the low price! Everything I ordered tasted authentic and delicious! Parking (5 stars) This restaurant is in a plaza, so there's plenty of parking spaces! Overall (5 stars) I will definitely come back to Wok Up when I'm in town again. The food is comparable to the food in LA! I would highly recommend this restaurant. They also do delivery and take-out, so that's a plus.

Yelp
My wife and I have ordered out from this location several times, no problems. We stopped in for lunch the other day, clean enough and seemed fine. We started eating, no other customers were there, when we started smelling strong cigarette smoke. I told my wife thats coming from the kitchen. The lady at the register must have smelled it but didn't seem to care until she heard my comments. She then yelled towards the kitchen in Chinese and went in. The smoke smell stopped but apparently the cook was smoking in the kitchen... Later that day my wife and I both had really bad stomach pains, cramps, and more. We had different dishes. We will not be eating there anymore.

Yelp
We have been ordering here for a while. So far, the customer service is amazing! The food as well, of course! ^_^ Our last order consisted of shrimp fried rice, and lemon chicken. We sincerely appreciate that there were lovely plump whole deveined shrimps! They were well cooked! The fried rice was not greasy. The lemon chicken was sautéed in flavourful pinch of salt and pepper, fresh green and red bell peppers, and onions. The chicken was tender and moist. We were delighted that it was not battered and deep fried, and swimming in sauce. Also love that there were layers of flavours. ***Wok Up, please continue being consistent with serving better Asian cuisine, and maintaining great customer service! We appreciate you!*** We will definitely continue enjoying Wok Up's food! They also offer gluten-free dishes! Brilliant, ain't it?

Yelp
I used to love this place: great food, good service. Unfortunately, the latter has become poor. I ordered my food online, and I received my usual email confirmation stating that it was placed. I was given a time frame of 55 minutes for delivery (6:38pm). Usually they show up within 30-35 minutes. My order was placed at 5:43pm, and my food was delivered at 7:10pm so I called them. I received no call telling me that they were running behind, no apologizes, no free food as compensation - no nothing. The driver was very polite, like they always are, but the person had no pen on them and I had to find one in my home. The food was hot, but the eggrolls were soggy. I suggest pick up for this place, if you choose to order from them.

Yelp
This has to be my new fav spot for take out!! So many vegan/vegetarian options along with reg. Meat options as well. I ordered the sweet and sour pork and substituted the pork for tofu...I don't know about any one else but I feel like when I substitute things for vegan options some how the order gets messed at up at other places... so I took initiative and called just to make sure ... the employee who answered the phone was great! I asked him if he could swap out the pork for tofu and he answered "sure, I could do that. I'll cube it up and fry it for you" So easy!! So not only was their customer service on point but the food came In like 25min! AND it tasted great! Wok up will be my go to for vegan Chinese from now on. Can't wait to go back and try more

Yelp
I would try a different place for Chinese. I am still trying to get that great place I know I can trust for service, quality and speed. Still looking. For the food the flavors we're alright but the vegetables were cut too large. It was a struggle to eat because of the distraction of having to eat it in two or three bites for 1 piece of bell pepper. The delivery guy was like "so you have a tip?" And I'm sorry I just would like a hey how are you so I can at least thank the person for coming out. I dunno it just made the whole thing super awkward. The speed was great though, they got to my house in way under the estimated time.
