The Story Behind Taste Tickler, One of the Pacific Northwest’s Iconic Teriyaki Sub Shops | Eater Portland

"John Chung later opened Woks Deli and Teriyaki, where teriyaki cheesesteak subs were sold alongside sukiyaki and spicy pork, and where the sticky-sweet marinade that became ubiquitous in Pacific Northwestern teriyaki was developed; the Chung family estimates more than 100 Korean immigrants trained at Woks and other Chung restaurants." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Google
The wonton soup, kung pao, and shrimp fried rice are still the best for me. Thank you for your great service.

Hans D.

Google
Very good food, big portions decent prices.

Google
I called and ordered take out due to Covid restrictions. Food was fresh and yummy, very large portions. We had leftovers for days. Most dishes we ordered came with a side of steamed white rice. We got free egg rolls which personally I thought were too plain, definitely needed some type of meat in my opinion. See the pics for entrees we ordered. Definitely would recommend.

Google
Since the pandemic I’ve been hooked. Tasty large portions at a reasonable price. Cooks fast and service is friendly. A local gem!

Google
I am always looking for great Chinese food that's kind of old school and above the Panda Express type. This is it. Authentic, delicious and well priced with abundant servings. The combo fried rice was just mouth watering, and the salt and pepper pork chops are crispy and crave worthy

Google
It is close to 5 stars for a reason, it is delicious! THE best Chinese restaurant I have been to in Cali. I am from another state, and the Chinese food here... It is just not the same. This is just like home. I love the beef and broccoli . I have tried the beef and broccoli, chicken and broccoli, orange chicken, egg drop soup, cream cheese wonton, egg roll, and the fried shrimp. The beef and broccoli is out of this world, seriously, you have to try it. Broccoli isn't to crunchy, nor mush, and the beef is so tender. It seriously comes in so much tasty sauce! Can upgrade to fried rice for a small fee. The let you customize even, or at least they did when asked. I was able to get my egg drop soup plain (no tofu or veg) and they were even nice enough to swap my fried shrimp for a few cream cheese wontons. The cream cheese wontons have a touch of sweetness which is the best in my opinion. I wasn't a huge fan of the fried shrimp, and the orange chicken was a little on the sweet side.. (I prefer spicy). However, I can see why everyone else recommendeds it. The beef and broccoli was just sooooo good though. The family A dinner come with a big entree, 2 cream cheese wontons, an egg roll, 1 fried shrimp, and egg drop soup. It is worth it! All that food is enough for two, but you won't want to share, you will want to double up. The staff is always kind, they are quick, and they have never messed up my order. Very consistent! The chef is awesome and I would recommend this to anyone still on the hunt for a great chinese place! Only the buffets compare, but they arent nearly as clean! I have been here a few times, and really don't ever plan on going anywhere else. (Pictures vary, as they are from the last few times I came here.)

Google
I've been here so many times I forgot to count. Great service, tasty and fresh food, what else could you ask for? This place is 5 Stars all around I would give it six if I could. Definitely recommended. I recommend the House Chow Mein, Broccoli and Beef and the Kung Pao Chicken/Beef/Shrimp or all 3! Yes all 3! Ask about it. Enjoy, you can thank me later.

Google
Family style freshly made authentic Chinese food. Owner's are patient and kind to new comers and will give awesome recommendations. Definitely my go to from here on out!

Yelp
I've tried a few Chinese spots around Norwalk, but this one definitely stands out! The food was super fresh, flavorful, and came out hot (which is rare lately). I ordered the orange chicken and chow mein -- both were perfectly cooked and not greasy at all. The portions are generous too! The staff was really friendly and quick with service, and the restaurant was clean and welcoming. You can tell they actually care about their food and customers. Definitely my new go-to for Chinese takeout in Norwalk. Highly recommend if you're craving good, classic Chinese food done right!
google avatar

Yelp
Good Chinese food. The sesame chicken is good. It's more like a sweet and sour chicken. But it's really good.

Yelp
Woke Deli completely surprised me in the best way possible. I found it while doing a quick search for the best Chinese food near Norwalk, and oh my goodness I am so glad I did. The moment I walked in, I was greeted with the warmest smile by Winnie, who honestly felt like that fun cool auntie who always makes sure you're taken care of. She greeted me right away, helped me order, and even brought my food out to the table after it was ready. That kind of care is so rare these days and instantly made me feel like I was at home. I ordered the orange chicken with fried rice and it was perfection. The food was hot, fresh, and full of flavor where you could actually taste the quality. The portions were huge, definitely more than enough for one person, so I ended up sharing with my siblings later and they loved it too. Prices were super reasonable, especially considering how generous the serving was. I got it to go because I went by myself, but honestly, I kind of love eating in my car and watching Netflix and it made the meal even more comforting. But I would say there were families eating in there on a lovely Sunday and the ambience was just right. Everything about Woke Deli just hit right, the food, the service, the speed, and that sense of care that you don't get everywhere. I'm already planning to go back not just for the delicious food but because Winnie made me feel like family. Quick, fresh, flavorful, and filled with love, that's how I'd describe this place. Highly recommend.

Yelp
10/10. Winnie helped us and was very nice. Will be back again! I got a #39 with fried rice. Super delicious

Yelp
This spot is Yelp Top 100 for a reason! // Food: Black Pepper Filet Mignon, BBQ Pork Fried Rice, Orange Chicken Almost everything I have had here is delicious. I have brought 4 other people to try it out since we first had it and they too agreed that the food was delicious. Portions are quite big so make sure you either have a large appetite, bring a buddy, or get ready to have leftovers for a few days. I highly recommend the black pepper filet mignon and the bbq pork fried rice, as they are a must order for me every time I stop by. Other items I have tried include: double pan fried noodles, orange chicken, and the honey walnut shrimp. All were good, but didn't stand out like the filet and the rice. //Restaurant: In all honesty I thought it was like panda express style Chinese food. Inside it looks like it would be one of those restaurants, but instead its family style. The restaurant is relatively clean and the service is good. I have never had any issues in this regard. //Notes: There are so many things left for me to try here.

Erin H.

Yelp
This is one of those Chinese food places I wish I could gatekeep. It's good quality and good portions for the price. I've ordered here many times and I'm always happy with the food.

Yelp
Wonderful and deliciously made won ton soup! Large quantity filled with chicken, shrimp and ham, plus plenty of wontons and veggies. It's a meal in itself. Great soup base too. The chow fun noodles were so well made and the plate was full of goodness. The spicy chicken wings were pretty good but not spicy enough. Still tasty and made fresh!! Restaurant is very clean and best with sufficient seating. Very fast and efficient service.

Yelp
This review is for Saturday November 15th, 2025. My wife wanted to try one more time. Just hoping that the insect in our food was just a one time incident. I really didn't want to go back there ever. But I ended up ordering the noodles again. I'll never know if there was an Insect in there this time since the caterpillar has the same shape as the noodle. The food was enjoyable. However, when I went in to pick up the phone order I saw the lady who always works there. She wasn't working the day back in August when the insect was in our food. SO I decided to kindly let her know about what happened to us back in August. She's always been and nice and friendly. BUT NOT this time! She got so mad and raise her voice at me and denied that there was an insect in the food they prepared for us. I showed her photos and the videos of the catapillar squirming around amongst the noodles haha. She refused to watch and raised her voice at me. She denied it. We've been going there for years and that is the way she treated a good paying customer. I was trying to be polite and let her know without alarming her customers. I should report this to the health department but unsure. We won't be going back there because they do NOT value the customer. I'll goto Ho Ho China across the street. The food is good there also. And I've never been treated like crap there

Yelp
Happened to be at a conference in Downey this weekend and we im the mood for Chinese food. The service was pretty fast and very helpful. The interior is a little small. We had a big party and needed to put a few tables together. If it's a large party, might be best to order Togo just to have a little more space.

Yelp
Food: delicious, at good temperature, and the meat and chicken are very tender. The veggie rolls are good as well. The rice is on the mushier side, but very good! Service: outstanding service from Winny! From the start she was very helpful as soon as I told her it was my first time visiting. We got seated quickly and after looking at the menu, we opted for the Mongolian beef and kung pao chciken, with veggie rice and veggie chow mein. EVERYTHING WAS GOOD. I had ordered a coke and it was good at first, but after sipping half way through, it tasted like a cherry flavor. Kinda weird, but aside from the coke; everything else was great. I hope to try their orange chicken sometime. Ambiance: Winny is the best server I've had in a long time. I didn't expect much of the service at a Chinese restaurant, but I was pleasantly impressed. She was super fast paced handling the front of house and customers. Every customer seemed to leave pleased. My bf and I were surprised when she actually bagged our leftover food for us! We took home 4 plates because there WILL be food leftover if it's just 2 people eating. I feel like the plates can feed up to 4 normal eaters. 3 really hungry eaters for sure. Wow, I left impressed when I saw that the bill was only $64! This place was great: I'll definitely be back!! Thank you, Winny! And to the amazing fast working cooks! Thanks!

Yelp
Went here for first time. Ordered the lunch special It comes with soup of the day, egg roll and soda. Got home to find no soup, no sweet and sour for the egg roll or no drink !! For 27 dollars I should have got everything advertised !!! Never going back.

Yelp
We came here after church on my birthday weekend. We ordered the Walnut shrimp-Wow! The Sweet and Sour Pork-and a non-documented item Egg Foo Young-Amazing gravy. We also got white rice and a kind of Thai iced tea-yummy. The people that run this place are pretty skilled at pleasing their customers, and the three dishes we had were drastically different in flavor and presentation. This place offers a gift in a time when so many things are unstable, good food and service are a well needed breath of fresh air. Humble and unassuming this place stands out as casual and defined as a best of.
google avatar

Yelp
The food here was SO good! We ordered a bit of everything to try. Service was fast and food was fresh. Their chili oil was also great, I normally am not a huge fanatic but this one had great flavor. Large portions and very flavorful but not overly greasy or salty
google avatar

Amy V.

Yelp
I ordered catering for a work lunch. The lady who took my order over the phone was very sweet and made ordering so easy. The food was amazing. Fresh and hot!! Will definitely be using them again. I ordered orange chicken, broccoli beef , fried rice and egg rolls. All delicious

Yelp
I truly wish I could give this place a higher review, mainly because the owner was so truly friendly and kind. We went here for Lunar New Year, because they had rated number 14 on a Yelp list I was emailed by Yelp on the top 100 Chinese restaurants in the USA and was the first one that came up in the Los Angeles general area. It is not what you would expect. Located in a rather nondescript strip mall, the place is a stark, small place with a handful of tables. It looks like a fast food Chinese joint from the outside. I get that in the area, this might be heads and tails above any other Chinese food, because the area seemed to be mostly filled with Mexican restaurants and little else. The owner said they had a place for years in Culver City called Panda something or other. Since I live in the SGV, I am pretty much surrounded by nothing but Chinese restaurants, and this one was not one of the best I've had in L.A. let alone NYC. Still, nothing was bad. It was more that I guess we went in with a high expectation that was not met. One very nice thing is the plates are enormous. You will have plenty of leftovers and prices are low, so it is a deal. They are very generous with portions. We were given complimentary spring rolls (veggie egg rolls), and they were the biggest I've ever been served. They were okay, though I only order NY style egg rolls. I only eat these types when I get them for free. The pan fried pork dumplings were just fine, but not the best I've had or even close. I really liked the BBQ spare ribs. Nowadays these Americanized-Chinese char-siu type marinated ribs seem hard to find in Los Angeles. At least good ones. The ribs were enormous, like everything else, and the flavor was great. This was probably my favorite item. The white meat kung pao chicken was another huge portion and another one of my favorite items. It was quite good. The dry sautéed string beans were okay, though not my favorite. I like them with ground pork. The BBQ chow fun tasted pretty good but was extremely oily, and the BBQ pork was oddly chopped up. Still, I liked the taste overall. The biggest flop of the meal was the Seafood Double Pan Fried Noodles. This is something the missus gets all the time at every place and she was not a fan at all. She said the noodles were the wrong noodles and should've been thinner. In addition, she said it was basically bland and flavorless. If you are nearby, I would recommend you give them a try. I'm sure for the area they stand out. Problem for me is I live a considerable drive away closer to generally better places. So I'm not sure if I would make the long drive for food I found to be generally decent but unexceptional. I do think about those ribs though.

Yelp
Amazing food at a reasonable price with great service. The vegetable garlic soup is the best and it is my go-to when I am feeling sick. I believe it has healing nutrients as well as being delicious. Broccoli beef, sweet and sour (your choice of meat), Buddha's Feast- wow. Portions are huge. I usually order the food to go and pick it up. They use great reusable to-go containers. It is always ready and bagged before I arrive. The staff there are helpful. I watch the chefs work continuously and hard to keep up with the demand. The dining room is clean and bright.

Anabel B.

Yelp
They weren't lying when they said best authentic Chinese food in down! The place definitely lives up to the name. The lady at the register was very nice and funny. My food was piping hot (just the way I like it.) The portions are huge and they don't hold back the ratios. I want to come back and try the lunch specials

Rich T.

Yelp
We are back! We gave the orange chicken another shot after a long hiatus and the flour to chicken ratio is much improved. Service was great as usual.

Veronica V.

Yelp
First time trying this place and I really wanted to like it since it's close to where I live, but I don't think I'll be coming back any time soon. I ordered some hot and sour soup and an order of shrimp fried rice for pick up. Service was good, no complaints there. However, the food was very disappointing. The fried rice was soggy, greasy, and flavorless. Not to mention I found hair in it! So disgusting. The hot and sour soup was bland. I'm so grossed out by the hair I found in the food. I'm sick with the flu and I really wanted a nice and comforting meal. I strongly suggest the kitchen staff to get it together and practice good health and safety measure!!!!

Yelp
My wife found this place a few years ago and we've been coming here since. The food is superb! The service is good and the staff are friendly.

Jennie A.

Yelp
Amazing Chinese food!! Best I've had in a while ! Highly recommend! Food was fresh and made to order
google avatar

Shay A.

Yelp
The BEST Chinese food in town! It's a lil expensive but totally worth it cuz nobody else makes it this good! The employees are super nice and they make it when u order it. If u don't want to wait call in the order and it's ready when u get there. Love this spot!

Stephanie K.

Yelp
The lady at the front is so sweet, the food is okay. I've had the walnut shrimp, kung pao shrimp, orange chicken, and broccoli & beef. everything is a bit salty and has too much sauce, the beef seemed to be more rubbery? or just fat portions of the beef, texture-wise was not too appetizing. But large portions for the cost.

Rey C.

Yelp
Delicious and well prepared authentic food. You can taste the love and it always comes hot and well seasoned. Highly recommended, this is definitely a family favorite.
google avatar

Steven C.

Yelp
The food is amazing! Best fried rice I'd had in a while!!!! Was craving it the next day after!! Th service is really good too and super quick! Definitely recommend to everyone!
google avatar

Katherine M.

Yelp
Service here is always great. The food always tastes so good & it has good flavor. Serving size for each plate comes with good enough food. Kung pao chicken, shrimp chow mein are so good I would definitely recommend.
google avatar

Pamela R.

Yelp
My go-to spot for honey walnut shrimp! They're so good and a great portion for its price! Dishes come with steamed rice as well. Kung pao chicken and fried wontons are also delicious. Service is fast for both dine-in and takeout.

Judy G.

Yelp
The food was so bland and had no flavor whatsoever!! It is not even close to Chinese food!! I would not recommend this place to anyone!!!

Unamed U.

Yelp
Food is great always hot if you eat or take out it's just so expensive prices have tripled
google avatar

Daniel V.

Yelp
Great service! Food was made fast and hot! Loved how home authentic it tasted. Pretty good price too, would pass on egg rolls but rice/chow mien and beef broccoli id recommend!!
google avatar

LeAndre A.

Yelp
This Wok's Deli's food is really good. I've eaten here several times and have pretty much tried everything on the menu. The restaurant is clean and well-organized. The woman who takes the orders (I'm not sure if she's the owner) has great customer service and never tries to take advantage of the customer. If you are ever in the area, you have to give this place a try. You will not be disappointed.
google avatar

Yolanda D.

Yelp
I ordered ain't war wonton soup how does spam become involved? Not good at all? I give it a 10 thumbs down.
google avatar

Sheila T.

Yelp
I ordered lunch special pork chop, Egg Drop Soup, and Walnut Shrimp. This is for the pork chop & Egg Drop Soup only. Pork Chop was very savory and light and crispy. Rice was of good quality. Egg Drop soup is excellent. Overall, food is very, very good! Service was good as they delivered the food via GrubHub. I will order again for sure
google avatar

Annette M.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the Kung Pao Chicken. I ordered the $10.99 lunch special. I thought it was a good-sized portion, enough for two meals. It was flavorful and fresh! I will definitely return. The service was good. The ambiance was nothing special.
google avatar

Randee M.

Yelp
Yummy! I have purchased trays for events in the past from here but I usually purchased the noodles. This time I purchased the pork fried rice and boy, it did not disappoint! I will come here again and again for any group event. Highly recommend coming to Wok's Deli to support this local business in Norwalk, CA!!

Yelp
Yay or nay? 1/2 Thought the food here was decent. All items tasted fresh but there were a few minor things that I hope can be improved. We ordered the following: Kung Pow chicken, Mongolian Beef, Chow Mein, Fried Rice, and Walnut Shrimp. Kung Pow Chicken was okay. A little bland and was not spicy. The Mongolian beef was a bit bland and we didn't like the chewy texture. Chow mein was decent. Fried rice was a bit sticky and lacked the flavors I'm used to. It tasted like regular rice you make at home. The highlight for me was the Walnut Shrimp. Great flavor and texture and the only item I really enjoyed. Everything else was a bit underwhelming. Nothing tasted old or gross though. The issues were mostly in texture and flavors so hopefully it was just an off day. Expensive? Worth it? 0/1 Prices are pretty standard/fair. Wasn't cheap and didn't feel ripped off either. However, since we only enjoyed 1 out of the 5 dishes, I can't say it was worth it on our visit. Location 1/1 Location was nice. Clean, friendly staff and plenty of parking. They accept debit/credit card payments. Plan to return? 1/1 Probably since the food tasted fresh, I want to give this place another go.
google avatar

Kristina K.

Yelp
Great tasting food, great service and great value. This is my family's go to Chinese take out for years.
google avatar

Carlos F.

Yelp
Flavor is amazing. The amount of food for the price is even better. The price just like everywhere else have gone up so I don't go as often as before but there is no other local Chinese place that I would go to before this place.
google avatar

Adriana L.

Yelp
This place is amazing!! No matter what you order, the food is always fresh and delicious You can call ahead for takeout or also dine in, they have several tables available. Portions are perfect for sharing and their noodles are great!
google avatar

Aunje M.

Yelp
Friendly people here. Decent prices. Trying o ur a new spot locally. It's right behind the Norwalk square and would be easy to visit when shopping. Pretty good value for their Dinner special... and everything had a really great taste. I'll be back

Bryan

Yelp
Great little hole in the wall spot. Nothing extravagant or fancy but good staple Asian local spot. I'll have to come back and try some other items. The orange chicken was solid. Great portions for the lunch special. Service is spot on

Geovanni D A.

Yelp
Food is amazing! We love coming to Woks Deli, It's so great finding places our 4 and 6 year old love as well! Servings are a really good size and food is ready very quickly. We always order to go, but place always looks busy. Definitely a gem!
google avatar

Breanna C.

Yelp
The food here is absolutely amazing and delicious. The hospitality and customer service is second to none. They beat out Ho Ho China across the way due to the freshness, portions and overall demeanor of the individuals working here. My family frequents Wok for big events and/or family dinners when we are too lazy to cook. We typically get the shrimp fried rice, chop suey, Orange chicken, beef and broccoli and honey walnut shrimp.
google avatar

John E.

Yelp
My wife and I love this place. Their thin noodles and wonton soup are our go to. The ladies at the counter are always friendly and the service is quick.
google avatar

Daniel Z.

Yelp
My gosh is this place amazing. The food is very good. I usually order pick up and they never fail to deliver great food. Prices are reasonable and you get plenty of food. The staff is great and will always remind you when you spend more than $50 you get free egg rolls or Thai tea.
google avatar

Ian M.

Yelp
Not sure if its a hidden gem as it was very busy but it's definitely a gem. And despite the high volume they got our food out fast and fresh. The eggrolls were amazing. Super big, very crunchy and fresh. The walnut shrimp was succulent and not too sweet or greasy. The salt and pepper porkchop I could have just eaten the whole plate to myself. Very savory and crispy but not overcooked. The spicy eggplant was unctuous and full of flavor. To top it all off the portions were huge. Had leftovers and just as good the next day. I'm definitely going to try the sirloin and the orange chicken next time I saw some come out of the kitchen and it had my mouth watering.
