How John Chung Spread Teriyaki Across Seattle Through Its Korean Community | Eater

"Designed as a weekday-lunch shop in an industrial neighborhood, this location became an immediate hit with workers, often producing lines out the door; its compact model—fast-cooking, thin-sliced marinated meats served quickly over rice or in sandwiches—paired teriyaki with an eclectic menu (teriyaki cheesesteaks, barbecue beef and pork sandwiches, the 'Magic Sub' and sukiyaki beef), and it became a training ground that spread the Chung method throughout the region." - Naomi Tomky

I stumbled upon this restaurant by chance while passing by. It offers a typical teriyaki menu, along with Korean dishes, some Japanese options (like sushi and tempura), and even jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles). The area is an industrial zone, so workers from nearby factories frequently drop in. Perhaps because of this, the restaurant opens early at 10 AM and closes early (3PM) as well. It seemed like the owners, a husband and wife, were the only ones working (I couldn't see the kitchen). The owner’s wife took orders and served in the dining area. I arrived around 10:40 AM, a bit early for lunch, but there were already two tables with customers, and more people started coming in shortly after. I ordered four dishes, including Korean and teriyaki options. Typically, teriyaki places don’t serve Korean side dishes (banchan), but since I ordered Korean food, they brought out banchan. The owner’s wife apologized for the limited variety of side dishes and generously brought out extra. As I tasted the side dishes, they had a comforting, homemade quality, like a warm meal prepared at home. The flavors were neither too salty nor too bland, with a clean taste that didn’t rely on artificial seasonings. The dishes—spicy pork bulgogi, seafood soft tofu stew, stone pot bibimbap, and Mongolian beef—reminded me of my mom's cooking, which I loved. While the food didn’t have the commercialized taste of popular chain restaurants, it felt like it was made with care and attention, just like a meal prepared at home. This restaurant pleasantly exceeded my expectations. - Service: Following the typical teriyaki joint setup, you place and pay for your order at the counter before taking a seat. The staff then brings your meal to your table. A nice touch is the complimentary bottled water that accompanies your meal. - Price: Considering the generous portions and delightful taste, the pricing is quite reasonable. While I haven't compared it to other eateries in the vicinity, the value for money here stands out. - Food: The dishes shine with a home-cooked quality, free from overpowering artificial flavors. Each bite feels wholesome, capturing the essence of genuine, heartfelt cooking. - Ambiance: The setting is straightforward and functional, characteristic of fast-food-style teriyaki spots. It's not fancy, but it serves its purpose well. - Parking: There's ample parking available, though spaces can fill up quickly. Nevertheless, finding a spot wasn't an issue, and it's free of charge. In summary, this restaurant offers a delightful blend of authentic flavors and efficient service, making it a noteworthy spot for anyone craving quality teriyaki and more.

Google
So their building is a little run down, but the service was great and the staff were so friendly and sweet. I had the spicy chicken and it was good. Nice portions. They also had Strawberry Lemonade Sunkist which we've never seen before and it was awesome.

Google
The cheap price doesn't match their amazing quality and quantity. They are a small family owned business and always had freshly cooked food with great service. The k-12 combo is spicy pork bulgogi with soft tofu soup with traditional Korean side dishes with a bowl of rice. Amazing taste and value, always comes out very hot. The spicy chicken teriyaki can come with a katsu combo and is super filling. Would recommend this for anyone looking for a filling and hearty meal around lunch time!

Google
Family owned business. They offer so much like Teriyaki, Korean, and Chinese dishes. Some of the best prices and very fast and kind service. My new go to for lunch.

Google
First visit: 12 dollars for fried rice, general tsao chicken, and salad. This is going to be my new go to restaurant for Chinese food. This tastes good and the lady working there was nice. Second visit: sweet and sour chicken with fried rice and salad. Tastes good. They let me work on my laptop here while I eat. Good price.

Google
Honestly I am scared to share this place with anyone. It's great value and delicious. There's a huge variety of things to try, so much that I have my next 3 orders already nailed down. They have Chinese American, teriyaki, and Korean food! The owner was so sweet and friendly as well. Just a great time overall. Katsu rating was a 8.5/10 pretty darn good, crispy, not dry and well seasoned!

Google
Best food hands down in Seattle!! Again this hidden gem tucked away serves the best food with a humble family that runs the place! Has been in business for 30+ years and I can see why!! I suggest trying them out!!

Google
If you're looking for good food at a great price, this place fits the bill. We ordered the Chicken Bento Box and Chicken Teriyaki/Gyoza plate. Food was fast and delish. Not many places were you can get a good hot lunch for starting under $10. Will be back again. They had many choices from Japanese, Chinese, and Korean.

Yelp
Great teriyaki shop! They not only have teriyaki but Chinese food and Korean food! All the prices are very reasonable and the food came out quick! It had quite a lot of great flavor and the Korean food even came out with some ban chans! I can't wait to come back and try other items in the menu! Highly recommend trying this place out! It's so cozy and even comes with free barley tea!

Yelp
Ordered the combo entree and soup set with spicy pork (daeji bulgogi) and black bean noodle. The combo comes with banchan. Definitely get an egg for the soup! Everything tasted delicious!
google avatar

Dooky W.

Yelp
Dont be fool by the price because the teriyaki chicken tastes like jerky which mean its a few days old.

Tim D.

Yelp
Great curry chicken. The right amount of spicy and the sauce is awesome. Nice family place, always clean. 12.99 for a lot of good fresh food is a deal. Rarely can you find fresher ingredients than Wok's Teriyaki.

Yelp
You know the food is going to be good when you see the owner's small children doing their homework or watching videos at an open table. I absolutely adore this locally owned, small business in Georgetown. I used to live very close to this place and would get the food all the time because the prices are incredibly reasonable. I had doubts when I first went - simply because this place didn't have a lot of reviews - BUT YOU NEED TO EAT HERE. I even drive 30 minutes back to this place sometimes just to eat their chicken katsu. The chicken katsu portions are very generous, and the bentos are an amazing deal. The vegetable and shrimp tempura are made to order, like the rest of the food, so it's all fresh and hot and CRISPY. I fell in love with the tea and will often come back and refill my tea cup with seconds and thirds, and the lady who works there is so kind to me (she even told me what kind of tea it was!). The menu offerings are so diverse and large, there's something for everyone. Tip: Call ahead, they do close on random days/times - not sure why. Follow me on Instagram @foodies.uwu for more Seattle food recommendations!

Yelp
Revisited business. Their window was busted and now boarded up with plywood. I saw on the news about the city's storefront repair fund program, I hope this restaurant's owner will get assisted by this program. https://komonews.com/news/local/downtown-seattle-business-storefront-repair-fund-broken-windows-mayor-bruce-harrell-king-county-washington#

Yelp
Wok's deli in the industrial area of Georgetown is a classic mom & pop teriyaki restaurant for your Asian pleasures. Love coming to this place for lunch time dining when I really want a big lunch for low cost. Always daily specials noted on board plus you have a plethora of other choices. No worries about finding something you like, it's do I want it in a single serving or combo meal. My favorite is the chicken & short rib combo. The meal comes with a salad (for my daily greens), rice and pile of shorts ribs and chicken all for $9.95. I mean how do they do it for so cheap? If your searching for some quality food look. I further. And if you want something sweet next door is The Cakes of Paradise for a slice of Hawaiian Cake or Pie. Bring a friend and share a meal or create a sample meal. You won't be disappointed , I know I'm not.

Yelp
Am I too late to the party? Man, this place is a hidden gem. I rode my bike and passed by this restaurant for a couple times. Today I decided to give it a try and get a takeout for lunch. $6.95 chicken teriyaki!!! I feel like I rode my bike into a time machine and got a steal. There was a lot of food, too. The portion was very generous.

Yelp
Wok's is on my regular rotation for lunch for a reason! The food is well prepared and the flavors pop on your tongue. I have two go to items I go for. Most of the time I order the Mushroom Chicken which is permanently on the specials board. Chicken, mushrooms, carrots and zucchini swimming in a slightly spicy broth, served with rice. So good! The other is the Meat Jun from the Korean side of the menu. Thinly pounded beef cooked in an egg batter and served with a trio of banchan. Try either and you will be happy.

Yelp
Have driven by this place for years. This time daughter #2 was craving some Asian food so we came in for lunch. My family ordered 3 different items off their menu. We decided to take advantage of being able to sit inside and eat, as opposed to taking it to-go and eating in the car (covid). We were expecting the food to come out in your typical styro-foam box, plate lunch style, but what we got was a nicely plated bento platter. And the kalbi ribs was served on a sizzling plate with Korean side dishes. Each of our meals was delicious and the service was great. The nice woman who was working out front was very nice and attentive. This place is a great deal all around.

Yelp
I had take out today from this place. The order: jja jja mein (sp? Jjajangmyeon), pork soft tofu soup, and pork teriyaki. My husband said his pork teriyaki was good, but I was not a fan of the other two items ordered. The mein was too sweet for my taste buds. It wasn't terrible...I just would not order it again. The pork tofu soup was meh. It was pretty plain and they used teriyaki pork as the pork in it. I'll assume it's teriyaki chicken if I were to get chicken instead. I came home and added a little bit of the juice from kimchi and fish sauce. Made it a little better, but I wouldn't place another order again. I guess, just get the teriyaki!

Yelp
believe this place goes by Wok Deli now some of older posts on here show it more as a Japanese deli. I'd say now it's definitely Korean. We were going to go to Kauai Family but forgot they're closed on Mondays so we just went down a couple doors. We were pleasantly surprised. I got the I got the hot stone bibimbap not a Korean food expert but I love the flavor of the slight charred rice and wasn't expecting any ban chan from this little place. My friend went with the combo teriyaki chicken pork. There was tea and two types of soups we could help ourselves to. Very generous portions neither of is could finish our meal and had to box it up for dinner later.

Yelp
Always my favorite teriyaki, (very delicious), very clean, warm and friendly, and reasonably priced !

Yelp
I've been driving past this place for some time. Didn't quite sure what to think of a place w/ 2 names (Wok's Teriyaki and Korean Food), but I decided to take my fam out for a quick bday lunch today! And what an awesome surprise it was!! We ordered spicy pork bulgogi and beef short kalbi ribs. Both dishes r worth $36 and then some! The portions were large and the leftover is worth 4 more meals for us. Each dishes were laid on top of perfectly steamed cabbage. Both dishes came w/ a side of Korean side bowls (kimchi, sweetened tofu and sliced potatoes) and a small bowl of ! Free Chinese egg drop soup and sweet&sour soup for everyone! My mom always say if the soup is good then the food is gotta great, and they sure were delicious! Quick serving. Decently cleaned place. Great for quick eat. Polite waitress. I would def come back again and would recommend the place to everyone.

Yelp
Yummy, generous... But the usual basic teriyaki joint. Disappointed there isn't any bubble tea here :'( Parking in front is limited but I've never had a problem the couple times I've come here sorting the lunch hour :) I really enjoyed the flavor of the Honey Garlic Chicken but it was way more breading than meat :/
google avatar

Johnna E.

Yelp
Just ate here yesterday. Their spicy mushroom chicken is so good! Life giving. The hot and sour soup if also really delicious. Did I mention it's free? I didn't even realize they had dol sot bibimbap until I was leaving and saw it being delivered to another table. I will have to try that next time, but not sure if they have the big banchan selection...
google avatar

Maddy K.

Yelp
This place is pretty good! I got an order of teriyaki that was so big it took me three days to eat (not complaining!) the teriyaki sauce is perfectly sweet and salty, and the salad dressing is very yummy. They also have lunch deals and punch cards! I have gone back four times already. Definitely recommend this place!
google avatar

Sandra N.

Yelp
Great place for a quick lunch! My friends and I love this place for its cheap price, quick and good food. For $7 you can get chicken teriyaki and most plates are just 8-10$. Very well priced and the owner is a really sweet, nice lady. They also have complimentary soup (egg and sweet&sour) that you can have while waiting.
google avatar

James D.

Yelp
Teriyaki joints are a dime-a-dozen in Seattle. It seems like there is a different join on every block. That being said, Wok's stands out among the rest. The prices are extremely reasonable, and they have free soup! Great flavors, and friendly service. I usually come around lunch time, and the place is always packed with laborers from around the area. Give this place a try!

Bryan L.

Yelp
I have been coming to Wok's Teriyaki for years after my coworker introduced me to their generous portions and bottomless self-service hot & sour soup (which is actually superior in flavor to many local Chinese restaurants; I grew up in a Chinese restaurant, and I pay special attention to hot and sour soup). Like a lot of teriyaki restaurants in town, Wok's Teriyaki is a no-frills establishment run by a friendly Korean family, and the Korean options on the menu are delicious; I regularly order their bibimbap (dolsot available) and soondubu. I sincerely hope Wok's Teriyaki survives this pandemic season, because I can't wait to dine in again!
google avatar

Rosalene M.

Yelp
Don't let the outside of the building scare you away. The inside looks like any other teriyaki joint but what happens in the kitchen is pure magic! The food is absolutely delicious! My husband had spicy chicken. I had the house fried rice and it was a very generous serving that had big shrimp, beef, chicken and pork. I don't like peas and carrots so they left those out and substituted some little pieces of broccoli and zucchini and it was so delicious! We dined in so were also treated to complimentary egg drop and hot and sour soup as well as fresh cold lemon water and hot tea. They took our order right away and it was served up quickly and perfectly as well. They did come out to see how we were doing and asked us if we liked the food. I liked the whole experience and when I'm in that area I will go back! Please try it, you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Jeff N.

Yelp
The best part about the place is the complimentary egg drop soup at lunch, get there early though, it runs out quick. As far as the food, teriyaki is teriyaki. Kinda hard to screw that up. They have great portions for a fat ass like me. The staff is very courteous and friendly. The building is kinda run-down, but not that uncommon among Georgetown buildings or even teriyaki joints. There's a several teriyaki joints with-in a block of here, however, I always come here for that egg drop soup. By far the best I've had. Get there early though for the soup and a good parking spot, the lot fills up quick at lunchtime.

Yelp
passed by this place several times. other day we tried going to kuai family hawaiian but the lunch rush crowd prevented quick seating so came here. a big "KOREAN FOOD" paper banner was plastered over the sign so we decided to try. still mostly a teriyaki place but with a few korean specials like bi bim bap and jia jiang myun. went with bi bim bap that does come in super hot stone bowl to really crisp up the rice on bottom. my cohorts went more standard teriyaki items. portion size were generous. decent quick place for lunch!

Victoria B.

Yelp
Probably the most reasonably priced Korean and teriyaki in seattle. Great cheap Korean food. 9.99 bibimbap. I stick w the Korean food but everything here is good
google avatar

Alison O.

Yelp
Great spot for Korean! We got one of the combos and were very pleased. Free soup which is nice-it's self serve and makes a great instant appetizer. Hot n sour or egg drop. Good portions and we noticed quite a few cops lunching there. Always a good sign. And it's next door to Paradise Cakes-hello!

Suzanne F.

Yelp
This was a good, friendly experience. My large group ordered a little of everything, and no one was disappointed. The 4 kids in our group all enjoyed their teriyaki (we ordered chicken, salmon, and beef), and my hot stone bibimbap was very good. Please don't listen to the other reviewer who says to stir immediately to prevent the rice from browning! Crunchy browned rice at the bottom of the pot is the best part about hot stone bibimbap! This is not fast food, and you will not be able to walk in, order, and leave within 30 minutes.
google avatar

Lucas K.

Yelp
We were just looking for something quick on our way out of town, and luckily for us, we caught Wok's Teriyaki just before they closed. Not only was the food delicious and the portions (overly) generous, but the staff was incredibly kind and welcoming. HIGHLY recommend giving this place a try--you are gonna love it!
google avatar

Leslie O.

Yelp
The best chicken ramen, and I've eaten it all over the world. It was interesting and full of char broiled meat and other veggies.
google avatar

Ramon M.

Yelp
Favorite Korean spot here in Seattle. Majority of all the Korean spots are in Kirkland or Federal way. It's good to know a really good mom and pop homemade Korean restaurant is nearby in the neighborhood of south Seattle! Try it out, you won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Dominique J.

Yelp
Great chicken breast eat here for lunch all the time. No black stuff all over the chicken. Buy 20 meals and get one free. Enjoy anytime I recommend this place
google avatar

Jon A.

Yelp
Went there with my family and we had an amazing late lunch/early dinner. Friendly staff, great service. We had the bimbimbap, chicken teriyaki, and sushi. All were awesome, with generous size portions. Will be back!

Elyse S.

Yelp
I work close by, so of course, had to check it out! I know what you're thinking.. Elyse, you have to eat Gluten Free and you're eating at a Teriyaki place..? Whaaa? Sadly, I can't eat the Teriyaki, but they do make a great fried rice that they do without any kind of sauce. Just garlic. It's great. It's like $8 and is enough for 3 meals. They are super nice and acommodating when I want to change it up and can make me a plain chicken breast and steamed veggies.
google avatar

Clayton J.

Yelp
Again, I'm not a teriyaki fan, but I tend to try them for their Chinese food. My 1st trip here I had General Tso's and it was mind blowing. I was convince that this was going to be my spot and they could do no wrong. On my 2nd trip, I had the mongolian beef and it was no winner. Knowing that many Teriyaki restaurants make it sweet instead of spicy, I told them, Don't make it sweet, make it spicy. The cook came out and said he would try, but didn't really know how. In the end I think I had food with too much salt and soy sauce and not much else. I've seen good mongolain beef made in food courts and it's just like 2-3 sauces, so I really don't understand why it's so tough for a teriyaki spot. Good people and good food, but in the end, just not for me.
google avatar

Kimmy S.

Yelp
Quick and friendly service, had their meat Jun (new on the menu) its flavory stir fried beef & egg with rice & salad. Cashier Chris is super sweet & helpful! Will definitely be eating here again.
google avatar

Carolyn J.

Yelp
We left full!! The chicken Bento box was huge and everything was fresh. The ramen was delicious, filled with chicken and vegetables and the broth was a little spicy . Perfect lunch if you're in this part of Georgetown, tucked away. The service was nice and the place is clean.

Jeremiah R.

Yelp
A very good place to grab something to eat if you are in the Georgetown area. I recommend the beef bulgogi

J. S.

Yelp
Their food is normally delicious, I guess a bad day happens. Yakisoba was very oily the day I got it. I I did mention it and hopefully they tine it down.
google avatar

Kevin R.

Yelp
Wok's deli is the best Teryaki in town. I used to come here on weekly basis if not more frequently when I worked near Georgetown. I have not been able to find anything comparable. They have a wide variety of dishes on the menu. My favorite was the spicy chicken. It came with a generous portion of delicious spicy chicken with cabbage broccoli and other stir fried veggies and rice. They even have a sauce station for loading up on extra spicy, teryaki and soy sauces. Give them a try and you won't be disappointed.

Josh M.

Yelp
Doesn't look like much, but a powerhouse of options and flavor. Great price and portion sizes. My go to lunch spot in the industrial district
google avatar

G. Lynn S.

Yelp
My Coworkers and I use to eat here all the time. But recently it looks like they have changed owners. First the portions are weird. My Coworker got barely any chicken teriyaki but a MOUNTAIN full of rice. When I got my tempura, everything looked like it was fish battered. It had no taste to it. You couldn't even tell what vegetable you were eating. I barely got any rice (they most have given it to my Coworker) and no chicken. The California rolls are HUGE!!! So I'm not sure if they no how to roll them right. I don't think I'll be going back here for a while until the new owners figure out what they are doing.

Chris K.

Yelp
I went to Wok's today to order lunch to go. Arrived at 12:05, placed an order of Kung Pao Chicken, left 45 minutes later with no lunch. I couldn't wait any longer, as I only had an hour for lunch. I did not receive my money back and I would never recommend Wok's for lunch.
google avatar

Yelp
I started working in Georgetown last month and this Teriyaki joint was recommended to me by a coworker. I should always be wary of those who refer to all places as "good". I parked out front and ran in; knowing what I'd get. I didn't see their menu beforehand but I had assumed they'd have my beef short ribs/kalbi. They did have it on the menu and I ordered it to go. My go-to Teriyaki place in my hometown often lets me sub out my veggie sides for extra rice so I asked for that here. I was told my problem. The place was a little on the small/dirty side but since I was taking to go, I didn't think it'd be a huge deal. But I must've just beat the lunch crowd as it quickly filled up as I was waiting the 10 mins or so. They offer a punch card with a 'buy 12, get 1 free' which I thought was nice if you're a semi-regular. I got my to-go box and rushed back to my office to enjoy it. Extra star for giving me so much rice (it was two small boxes in addition to the rice in my large box) but downgrade for charging so much ($10) for only about 2 strips of kalbi (they were all sliced up but not 'that' much meat). I probably wouldn't come back since there's another place near the Costco that makes better portions and $2 cheaper.

Yajara A.

Yelp
Hi just came into wok teriyaki today on my work break and this service took forever they were not friendly also I was there on my 30 minute break and I was there for a whole hour waiting on my food while other individuals we're on break as well and upset at the service of how long it took. Also when I received my food my Yaki soba was not cooked all the way. Also my coworkers spicy chicken teriyaki was not cooked all the way. I'm very upset that their service and will never return there again.
google avatar

Pete S.

Yelp
Look, they single handedly put Arby's out of business, sure I'm basing this solely on the fact that Arby's is gone and Woks happened to be next door, but can you prove they didn't? Plus, they are so gosh darn friendly here, I just want to help them out when possible. Maybe come on Thanksgiving or Christmas and have them sing deck the halls over a freshly made duck?
google avatar

Brad M.

Yelp
This place got new owners and has gone way down hill. Food quality and quantity cut in half. Used to go here 2 times a week. Not coming back.

Steven H.

Yelp
Great Bibimpop. I had it in the hot pot. So freaking good and it was hot (temp.) Remember to stir immediately so the rice does not burn on the bottom. Also had the Chicken T and it was good as well. Side salad a little bland.

K F.

Yelp
Ordered to go and made the mistake of ordering a bento box from a teriyaki joint. Tempura hard as rock so wasn't able to even eat. So hard the shrimps were like jerky. The teriyaki may be good but will never know as I'm not going back after that experience.

Yelp
My boss has a rule about trying new restaurants. If he goes during lunch time and it's packed, you know the food must be pretty good. If it's dead get out of there. Unfortunately I did not heed his advice on this trip. There was one person at a table and one person in line behind me at lunch time in a very busy area. This is a bad sign. I was not greeted by the cashier at all. I walked to the counter and waited until the guy looked up at me without saying anything and holding a pen and paper. After ordering my food I didn't even get to sit down before it was "ready". I thought to myself "oh man this is another bad sign". Now I'll spare you the storytelling and get down to business. A mountain of overcooked, dry, mushy rice. Chicken that had no "char" and gave me the impression it was once frozen. And finally the teriyaki sauce was goopy/shiny with a subtle sweetness that could only mean one thing. TERIYAKI SAUCE THAT CAME FROM A BOTTLE!!! I would bet money on it. All that being said here is the impression I left with. Previously frozen, precooked chicken topped with store bought teriyaki sauce and overcooked mush rice. The best part of my meal was the bottle of Coca Cola. Needless to say I left with a bad taste in my mouth. Especially for $10

Yelp
I've been eating at this Wok's for about 15 years. One of my favorite places to eat. In the past the owners would take a couple of weeks off to visit family and have someone else run the place while they were gone. It was noticeably "bad" In their absence .They sold the place last year it has been noticeably bad ever since. Today was my last visit. I came in at 2:00 for a late lunch and was served hard chicken leftover from the lunch rush. I asked for teriyaki sauce on the side because I like to use a little less than they do. Instead of a small cup of warm teriyaki sauce on the side, I got a "sauce in yellow bottle" with a finger pointing across my table. Fortunately for me there are many other teriyaki joints around the airport but it's a little sad to pull this one off my favorites list.
