Ann Arbor’s 15 Best Places to Drink Beer - Eater Detroit

"While the industry has spent a lot of energy on ales, Wolverine State Brewery is Michigan’s first and only microbrewery that’s dedicated to crisp, clear lagers. Among the dozens of seasonal and rotating beers find options like India pale lagers and a coffee lager brewed with beans from Roos Roast in Ann Arbor." - John Reyes

Google
Wolverine State is a nice brewery with a comfortable atmosphere and friendly staff. They have a fairly big selection of beers to choose from, and my flight had no bad beers. The quality was uniformly good, and I especially enjoyed the Raucher smoked beer. They’re definitely worth a try if you’re in the area.

Google
I have been coming to Wolverine State since it’s inception. It is one of my favorite breweries, especially in Ann Arbor. The service is always great. I love the all lager approach. Very few breweries opt for such a unique direction, such as this. Even fewer do it this well. I have had a lot of good times with friends, which make for great memories. Some of them I introduced to WSB. In addition to Premium Lager, they offer a variety of styles including Barista (a coffee lager), IPLs like Gulo Gulo and Tundra King, up to the heavy hitter Massacre. Massacre is one of the best barrel aged beers out there. I dare anyone to try to argue otherwise.

Christopher Lutsic

Google
Best lager facility in the state. They know what they are doing and they do it in world class fashion! I am going to miss the original people here. But a new chapter for them means a new chapter for us craft beer lovers! #supportyourlocalbrewery!

Google
Best brewery in Ann Arbor!!!! And I line in Columbus Ohio and an OSU alumni!!! I did a flight but honestly all the beers are great! We are the pulled pork quesadilla and it was awesome! They also had a lot of quality merchandise! I high remember coming here!!!

Google
Wolverine State Brewing is by far one of our Favorite Brewery in Ann Arbor. The staff goes above and beyond to offer us an amazing and personal experience each time we enter their doors. It’s hard to top excellent customer service however the beer here does by a long shot. The people are AMAZING but what’s more AMAZING (believe it or not) is the beer. And also the pulled pork nachos! My fiancé and I have been ordering them for over 5 years and they have yet to disappoint us. We recommend to everyone who visits Ann Arbor!

Google
Quietest busy place I have ever been. Bartender is so calm and composed despite the steady line of peeps ordering at the bar and people waiting for seats at the bar. My Bourbon barreled lager is mediocre, but I am a spoiled BBA drinker cuz of Untitled Art. I ordered the Rueben Quesadilla, cuz Wisco meets Tex Mex. Didn't dissapoint.

Google
These guys brew some serious beers out here! We picked this place randomly and so happy we did! One of us took a flight of beers , I took some malts chocolaty beer and someone took the wheat beer.. each beer was great! The place has a nice vibe and the crowd was good too. Although we didn’t eat there but the food that was passing by looked amazing esp the chips that were topped with huge servings of guacamole. Definitely recommended for good beers and food as well.

Google
Nachos are highly regarded. Varieties of beer. I had the Mac and cheese. And the black bean sliders. Good food. Quality ingredients.

Kevin M.

Yelp
Great beer but if i am going out with friends to eat we can't go there. There is Bahn Mi sandwich but with brisket rather than tofu. Why not do both, then you would have at least one vegan option on the sandwich menu and might get more business as a result rather than missing a whole party of people because there was not one vegan friendly option on the sandwich menu.

Yelp
I've lived in a2 for so long and hadn't been here yet! Finally went on a random Tuesday to watch the MSU bball game with my friends and I will def be back! They have some great vegetarian options - I got their black beans sliders which were the perfect serving size. My friends got a half order of nachos which were HUGE! They're known for their lagers but I stuck with what I know: Oktoberfest and it was delicious! The guys working there were very nice and friendly and food came out fast. There's plenty of parking and the interior is much bigger than you'd think. I will def come back!

Yelp
The last time I reviewed Wolverine they were not serving food yet so it's been a pleasure to watch them add BBQ to their line up and I was even more pleased to find it was delicious! I'm not drinking as much these days so it's nice to be able to come here and have a bite and a root beer and not feel out of place. I met up with a friend and her younger daughter as well, and it was a comfortable, somewhat kid friendly environment around dinner time, too (they even have a kid's menu, FYI). It's a casual atmosphere here, with a walk up counter to order your food and offerings like pulled pork sandwiches, ribs on Saturdays, and BBQ topped mac and cheese, which is what I opted for during my visit. It was great! The brisket was a nice smoky contrast to the creamy mac and cheese. Decadent but filling! I also split some soft pretzels with my friends and those were enjoyable as well. Carryout is available. Meat is smoked daily so when it's gone, it's gone, so I'd recommend coming early if you have your heart set on something.

Yelp
I've lived in Ann Arbor for 5 years and Wolverine is the best brewery in A2. They have a humble menu and ANYTHING you order will be really good and always consistent. Ive never had a bad meal there. Note, they make LAGERS. Dont ask for an IPA. If you want an IPA style, order the GULO GULO. The nachos are probably the best nachos Ive ever had. Enjoy!

Yelp
Great vibes, good food, beer was all around solid and massacre was fantastic. Bartender with the long hair was the man and the whole staff was great.
google avatar

Mj J.

Yelp
This has to be one of my most favorite breweries. Not only do i like the name, but the beers are fantastic. If it wasn't such a drive for me, I would be here all the time. If you are in the mood for food, the pork nachos are AMAZING!!! We loved everything about this brewery. I highly recommend a flight to sample the beers, but they are also in the hop passport so take advantage of the half off beers. #GOBLUE

Yelp
Good beer. Decent food. Great atmosphere. No table service or hostess is a little inconvenient and you have to order up front but we enjoy it! We tried a smoke beer and it was fantastic!
google avatar

Yelp
Great beer selection and food was very good. We were in Ann Arbor for Big10 Wrestling Championship and this was our favorite place to go.

Yelp
There is no other bar in Ann Arbor with a staff that cares as much about how the clientele feels within the bar itself than at WSBC. Hands down the BEST bar in all of Ann Arbor. Did I mention that the beers they serve are all great. I suggest the NZ Pils, but order a flight to be sure your tastes are there. To top it off, you cannot get better nachos in any other establishment. Totally recommended.

Ryan N.

Yelp
Best nachos!! Cubano is excellent! Has a selection of beers, I like their Lager Dog friendly
google avatar

Yelp
Great beer, delicious food and wonderful staff.A local staple with a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

Yelp
Great beer and a great space! I will say, I had a heck of a time trying to find the place. So channel your inner Lewis and Clark. But once you're there the parking is plenty and there's lots of seating. The beer selection is pretty varied and most people would be able to find something they would like.

Yelp
Got the cherry cyder-esque and it was amazing! I love ciders and thus was so refreshing and crisp. Loved the tartness with sweet together. Boyfriend got a beer flight with tundra King, harvest deluxe, gulo cubed, and gulf gulf and he liked most of them. Love the dark atmosphere with wood tables, wood bar, and string lights. They had a nice outside sitting area too. Staff was very helpful and answered our beer questions well.

Terri B.

Yelp
Very cool place with a huge selection of beers ...they are VERY generous in their portions of food so you get a lot for your money. I have been there twice and will definitely go back, however my only complaint is that the brisket they serve on the meat platter sure seemed more like a roast than brisket.I have had brisket many times at many different places and it's usually sliced in long narrow pieces ..this was more like, for lack of a better word- roast. Big chunks in a pile next to the pulled pork and mac n cheese. I believe there was even an up charge of $4 to have the brisket option with the pit master plate. As I said, I will go back but I won't order that again...you just shouldn't sell roast and call it brisket.

Yelp
A good choice if you want to watch a football game during the pandemic. They have plenty of seating but still very distanced. Lots of TVs too. I had the mac and cheese with bbq chicken. It was rich without being too heavy, you could taste multiple quality cheeses in there; this was far from Kraft Easy Mac. The serving size was generous. The service was friendly and quick. Prices were a bit high IMO but otherwise a good experience. I'll think of them first next time I want to go out to watch a game.

Yelp
Famous Nachos with pulled pork is great. It contains crispy chips with different colors, pulled pork, cheese, Guac, tomatoes, onions... different combo in one dish :p and the full order is really huge, good for 2-3 people

Yelp
Came in on a Friday night around 7:30. Place was pretty busy, we sat in the back room which was the only spot with tables open. Which would have been fine but it was super hard to get any service back there, and the water machine was out :( this is why I couldn't give it a full 5 stars. We had a Groupon which I think was a really good choice! It was good for 2 flights and 2 growlers, aka one for each of us! I loved every single beer on my flight which made it a super hard choice to pick what I got my growler of! We got the chips, salsa and guacamole, so start, it was perfect! I got the bbq chicken sandwich and I have to say I was not impressed. It was extremely hard to cut!!! I was legit fighting to eat it! Wishing I would have went with the pulled pork! My boyfriend got the turkey Ruben and loved it! Theres a pretty good chance we will be back if we are ever in the area again!

Yelp
Seems like a pretty cool place to hang and grab a beer. I learned that I'm probably not really much of a lager person as It was a bit too bitter for me. Nonetheless, there were many options to try and isn't that the funnest part about breweries? The staff was not that helpful though when we were looking for recommendations, but overall a good experience.

Scott B.

Yelp
Amazing food and great beer. It doesn't get much better than that. Everything I have had here is delicious. There pulled pork nachos are the best.
google avatar

Matt T.

Yelp
We keep coming back! Beer quality, choice, and price make this clearly the top brewery in Ann Arbor. Yes Beers are Lagers, but I like stouts and sours and I am still always happy hear. Food is excellent. I like the Nachos. You order all beer and food at the counter and they bring it to your table. There is some outdoor seating. Parking is always easy, the brewery is a bit off the main street, but it is easy to find.
google avatar

Aaron W.

Yelp
Smallish brewery tucked away behind some shops on Stadium Blvd. It's a bit hard to see this place from the street if you don't know where you're going. Parking is also a challenge--you have to squeeze in between a couple buildings to get back to their small and usually crowded parking lot. Parking is tough partly because the place is usually packed. I went for Wednesday night trivia and there were 19 teams! Good atmosphere and we had a fun time. Food is solid. The Nacho plate is huge and tasty--great deal and enough to share with 2-4 people depending on how hungry you are. I got a black bean burger to share and it was a bit disappointing. It totally fell apart and was very messy. You order from a counter and service is pretty quick. Nice no frills experience.

Yelp
We love WSB, but... A week ago, I bought a six-pack of Gulo Gulo IPL at Total Wine in Ann Arbor, as part of the WSB promotion. When I got home, I discovered that my shopping bag was soaked, due to the separation of the top from one of the GG six-pack cans. I immediately wrote to the WSB customer service website to explain what happened: having spent time with a family brewery in Bavaria, I knew that there might be a quality issue in their tinning process requiring adjustment. After a week, I received no response to my "heads up" (neither a call nor an email), so I am sorry to suggest that the WSB wholesale or canning process lacks quality control, nor MORE IMPORTANTLY, customer responsiveness. I hate to write this, but I have tried to alert you to your QC issues. Totoal Wine is now aware of your flawed canning process (as of yesterday, when I returned the split Gulo Gulo can to them, with the unopened cap separated from the can). FYI, I tried to call WSB and also your sales team at Total Wine within an hour of my return home. Your reps would not take my call. I love promoting local businesses, believe me. But, if no one seems interested in my warnings or observations, then perhaps the greater public will correct these serious quality issues. (Seriously, am I the only customer who bought WSB beer cans that leaked).

Yelp
While craft beer is king at Wolverine State Brewing, the craft sandwich menu definitely holds its own. The Cubano is absolutely fantastic, bursting with the flavor of house-smoked meats, pickles, mustard and some kind of secret sauce. Not sure where they get their baguettes, but they're amazing and really help make the sandwich. BLT, served on sourdough, is also hearty and outstanding, especially with optional avocado slices. Gulo gulo, an India Pale Lager, is a must for IPA fans. Great place to watch the Michigan games.

Melissa C.

Yelp
We have always loved getting the pork nachos for dinner and have done so for years - super yummy! This last time, though, when I made it home from picking up our nachos, the pork was missing. I called and the GM offered to refund the nachos, plus give us new pork nachos and a six-pack. It was a simple error that happened when the order was made. I've worked years in the service industry, it was busy that night, and this type of error happens on occasion. However, this level of GREAT service recovery is RARE. Great job to the GM and Wolverine Brewing!!!

Yelp
Solid beers and better than average food. Wolverine bock and Predator dopplebock hit it out the park. Brisket bahn mi is a decent brisket sandwich alternative, but completely misses the bahn mi mark. The chef should come out to Ba Le in Chicago's Little Vietnam neighborhood and get schooled on bahn mi. The brisket is solid. Consistent in the 203-205 range where the collagen breaks down but not too much where it dries out. Small wish that they'd leave it on the smoke a bit longer. Brisket Mac n cheese was a work of art.
google avatar

Alan W.

Yelp
First the place was pretty cool. However we got the nachos and with pulled pork and honestly it was dry and had no flavor. Kinda disappointing considering all the comments on the nachos. The beer which is the most important. First it was served in odd glasses. Second the I wasn't a fan of the three I got. My wife likes IPAs and said they weren't too bad. Overall I wasn't impressed.
google avatar

R A.

Yelp
I got the veggie nachos and Mac n cheese here. Nachos were a bit dry and the salsa had a odd bbq taste. Mac n cheese was pretty good!
google avatar

Yelp
We visited this place twice on our last trip to Ann Arbor. First off, we loved the selection of beers. They run the full gamut. We hope to be living nearby and try even more and take some growlers home from time to time. They also have an amazing menu. I ordered the quesadilla, which was fantastic. The most remarkable thing was that their blue corn tortilla chips were the best I've had outside the southwest. We cannot wait to sample more of the menu. The people here are so friendly, both employees and patrons. You feel welcome as soon as you come in. We plan to visit often and soon.
google avatar

Melissa P.

Yelp
A fun, off the beaten path place to go. They stay true to the Ale House theme with several beers on tap. I was a little disappointed with the smoked meat as it was not smoky. It was tasty, tender and well made other wise. As the reviews stated, you do order at the bar and then get your seat. The atmosphere was good and the staff friendly and helpful.
google avatar

Jaclyn K.

Yelp
The beer was good but the service and food were not. I sat at the bar for about 10 minutes before anyone acknowledged me. I asked for a water and menu and then waited about another 10 minutes for anyone to come back over. I ordered the beer sampler "box" and the goat cheese and caramelized onion flatbread. I enjoyed the beer. There were many options to choose from, and they were affordably priced. The samples I chose were served in a wooden box, with each type marked in chalk on the side. My flatbread left much to be desired... the caramelized onions were barely cooked and the cheese seemed to be just thrown on top of the pre-made flatbread dough. It didn't even seem like the flatbread was baked with the toppings on it; instead they seemed like they were just an afterthought and thrown on top. I would think about coming back here for a beer but will definitely be choosing somewhere else for food.

Yelp
I'm not sure how this gets added/attached to my previous review (if it does) but I just wanted to add that Wolverine State now also has an outdoor tent with heaters. It is still a bit chilly but at least it is out of the wind and the beer and BBQ are still the best.
google avatar

Dr. Albert B.

Yelp
Stopped for lunch. You order at the bar and then grab a table. Went to order at the bar and the bartender, complete with hipster waxed mustache, took our order with his back turned to us. Normally I would have a few choice words for him but my schedule was tight and I was hungry. I tolerated his utter lack of decorum and placed an order. My beer (Wolverine Premium) was delicious, cold, and crisp. Food was good. I recommend the nachos. There are other places to try and I would only return if I wanted a good beer and quick sandwich. Maybe the guy from Mythbusters will learn some manners and face the customers when talking with them. Tip: The place is behind an abandoned dry cleaners. Pull into the lot and go around the vacant building to find it.

Summer C.

Yelp
Those nachos are absolutely the best nachos around Ann Arbor. They are incredible. Huge portions. I appreciate that there are so many toppings that cover all of the chips too
google avatar

Brandon K.

Yelp
Went here before a soccer game at The Big House and was impressed. They have wide selection of in house brewed beer. The nachos with chicken were really good, and the pretzel with melted Gouda cheese was AWESOME. 25 minute walk to Michigan Stadium. Great spot.
google avatar

Megan C.

Yelp
Get the nachos! The beer is exactly as advertised, always tastes like the description. We love eating on their patio.

Yelp
This is one of those places that, if I lived in the area, I feel like I could very easily become a regular. We've been meaning to come here ever since they opened, and I'm really glad that we finally got around to it. We've been missing out! It's a cool space, kind of reminds me of Holy City Brewing out of Charleston, South Carolina. You might miss the driveway once or twice, but they do have a few signs to lead you in the right direction. Parking is a bit awkward, but it's definitely not a deal breaker. They've got a small outdoor patio, really nice for some casual conversation over a few brews. We were greeted by smiling faces as soon as we walked in. They've got chalkboards on the wall describing all of the beers they currently have on tap. It was explained to us that the first four beers on the list were beers that were always available, and everything else was rotating/ seasonal. They do not have set flights, you can get as many as you'd like. These are 5oz pours that range from $2.25-$2.50 each depending on the ABV. I tried all 5 of their rotating/seasonal beers. I really like the Cereza Rey (a cherry cream stout lager), but I found all of the beers to be delicious; there wasn't a single beer that I didn't like. I think there's definitely a beer for everyone here. Great service. Great beers. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.
google avatar

Francis R.

Yelp
GULO GULO! This might be a new one of my favorites beers. Once it hit the lips... Oh man. Soo good! Loved the hoppiness and floral after tones of the beer. Huge fan of IPAs but never had a India Pale Lager before until now. Hoping I can find some of this back in Chicago! For food, I did the trio of sliders called the 'Trifecta'. Such a cool name and consisted of BBQ pulled pork served with some jalapeno and blue cheese sour cream on toasted slider buns and a side of chips and a pickle. Not bad not bad. Food game here is decent, but definitely come for the beers. Lots of TVs in case you wanna catch a game. Unfortunately, I watched the Red Wings get eliminated during the playoffs here. Crowd died down real quick after that. 'Til next time, cheers!
google avatar

Ale B.

Yelp
This is my favorite neighborhood bar and restaurant. Love the staff and clientele. My go-to for the hockey team after our games and for a 'quick' beer with a friend.
google avatar

Chayan K.

Yelp
I cant say enough good things about this place. The crowd is great. But MOST of all, considering the libations and awesome selection i would say the most coveted, awesome, best beer and the only imperial dark lager i have ever had in bourbon barrels. Wow. This stuff is crazy good. Rich. Chocolatey without the chocolate. Caramel without the caramel. Hard to explain but as a michigan craft beer advocate, i will tell you its great! If you like founders backwoods bastard, and bourban barrel aged brown at griffin claw... this will be your moment. Come here and savor the drinks and flavors!

Elizabeth Z.

Yelp
Yummy everything!!! Their menu is amazing. Bring tons of friends and share everything on the menu. Very clean--they even have these cool accessible doors you can open with your foot. No more paper towel waste for opening doors! Owners --please bring back Hops2O! We love that drink soooo much.
google avatar

Nicole M.

Yelp
This place went beyond any expectations I had! The beer selection is amazing. I didn't try any of the food, but from what I saw it looked good. This was a fun pit stop for a few drinks and I'm sure I'll be back!
google avatar

Marc B.

Yelp
Near-ish the Big House, great place to watch a game, good beer, comfortable, and spacious. And a great map of the state of Michigan on the wall with a dart board in the middle. It's also a great venue for hosting an event (or being at a hosted event). The staff are nice, relaxed, and also very responsive.
google avatar

Pete L.

Yelp
We've been ordering take out during the quarantine, and have continued after they have opened up. The food was great before, and it just keeps getting better. The ribs are smoked perfectly and loaded with meat. The smoked pulled pork and brisket are juicy and full of flavor. The Mac and cheese, however, is the absolute best. Anywhere. Rich and cheesy. Well seasoned and topped with smoked pork. Toss a little house-made BBQ sauce on there and it is the quintessential comfort food. Oh, yeah. It's a brewery. The crisp lagers pair so well with the food. Whatever style of lager you're looking for (some you did not even know existed - like a cranberry orange summer wheat), you will find it here. Plenty of outdoor seating. Distanced inside seating and hand sanitizer everywhere. And free parking. If you're in Ann Arbor, this is the place to eat.
google avatar

Angela M.

Yelp
4 stars solely for the beer. Such a good selection. I especially liked the Massacre. The food wasn't impressive. I had the pulled pork nachos and they were kind of flavorless to me. But I would definitely go back for beer.
google avatar

Catlyn G.

Yelp
LOVEEEE this place! The service is good, the beer and food are amazing, and the atmosphere is welcoming. You must try the nachos because they are better then expected at a brewery. I highly recommend visiting this place if you get a chance!
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
Came here for the first time this weekend. I do not know why I had not visited before. Nice spot, not too large or too small. Could definitely get rowdy and packed during a game day. Good spot, good vibe, great selection of beer and food. I had the beef brisket french dip sandwich with chips and shared some loaded nachos with friends. Very generous portions. Pretty good overall. The nachos were the highlight. Drinkwise, I had the volitionist stout lager. Pretty darn good for a dark beer. Cold, bold, and filling. Loved it. Will be back again to try more of the beer and food menu.
google avatar

Josh B.

Yelp
Great beer selection and solid food. The nachos were actually very tasty and I'm looking forward to having them again. The pretzel sticks with Gouda sauce was somewhat disappointing as the sauce came out cold. Fun environment and always seems to have something going on in the back near the dart boards. Overall I would recommend stopping by.

Hgm L.

Yelp
As far as beer and service . Bbq Atmosphere is cool Brisket was dry for me. I like a heart stopper Chicken , I could've made the same in a oven , dry also. Service , great
google avatar

Yelp
Beef brisket and Cubano sandwiches were outstanding and warm pretzels were delicious! Good tasting homemade beer and very friendly bar service.

Yelp
After a subpar experience at a nice brewery the night before, Wolverine gave me a great experience at a not-at-all fancy brewery! They do lagers in all sort of entertaining ways--my three drinks were all engaging. The bar was full of regulars and there were lots of groups on the dining area. Nothing fancy here--just a big room that seems to have once been a stock industrial warehouse or something of the sort. Food--I had a brisket French dip (which was really well executed) with the baked beans, based on suggestion of a regular next to me at the bar. No frills, just good beer and good food. I was really happy here.
