The D.C.-Area Restaurant Openings in October | Eater DC

"The largest D.C.-area outpost yet of the next-gen food hall anchors Plaza America near Reston’s corporate hubs, bringing a lineup that spans Spanish fare from Jota by José Andrés, Southern staples from Bankside, and Mexican dishes from Silvana Salcido Esparza. Opening day is marked by a 4:30 p.m. celebration with plenty of samples for curious diners." - Emily Venezky

We tried this out on a Friday night, about a week after their opening. Got delivery. Everything was warm and in good condition when it arrived. Four of us ordered, four different concepts, and everything was really good, exceeded expectations. I had tuna poke with wasabi and poke sauce which was great, the best poke bowl I've had in a while. Got brisket and corn bread, both large portions, the brisket weighed in at 14 ounces. So good, my son didn't have any left to share. We also got fried rice, also good, according to a fried rice expert. And finally a Korean cheese steak, which was quite large and thoroughly enjoyed. I did pay for quicker delivery and that did not happen, but when I included a comment about that in my in-app review Wonder proactively responded and have me a generous credit. They just recently opened, if you can give them a little grace and are patient on delivery and some sold-out items you might find a new favorite take out place where everyone can be satisfied! Certainly we will be back!

Based on their marketing we were expecting celebrity chef quality food. It was more like below average delivery with celebrity chef prices. Much of the food tasted frozen or prepackaged. Nothing seemed fresh. They call it a food hall but it was nothing more than an undersized, underwhelming dining area. Only a few kiosks to order food in house. One of those did not work at all. The staff was helpful but they were pulling double duty cooking in the back. This place was a huge disappointment.

Uber Eats. Vodka pie. One of the best pies I’ve had here in the DMV. Everything was perfect down to the packaging. I was impressed with this Uber Eats order. Almost makes me want to come by & dine in.

This place has such a cool concept. It’s basically 24 different restaurants all under one roof, created by all-star chefs from around the U.S. So instead of traveling across the country to try everyone’s signature dishes, you get access to all of it in one spot. Pretty genius if you ask me. You do most of the ordering online, so there isn’t much interaction with staff. It’s very “order-ahead-and-go” energy. There are some tables where you can sit and eat once you pick up your food, but it’s not a full dine-in experience — more like takeout vibes with the option to stay. Now onto the food — everything I tried was packed with flavor and tasted like each component was meant to be there. Nothing felt random or thrown together. I ordered from Jota by José Andrés and got: • Setas al Ajillo These mushrooms on toasted bread were amazing. Super garlicky (in the best way), and the bread tasted like they rubbed raw garlic straight onto it — so smart and so delicious. The only downside: it’s supposed to come with mojo verde and mine didn’t. I can only imagine how much better it would’ve been with that extra sauce. • Carrilleras de Cerdo Braised pork cheeks over creamy mashed potatoes with a rich gravy. The pork was insanely tender — basically falling apart if you looked at it. Flavor-wise, no complaints. Portion-wise… for $19, it was tiny. I’d feel better paying around $14 for what I got. I ordered from Chios Taverna by Michael Symon and got: -The spanakopita, which is one of my all-time favorite foods. And this one did not disappoint. Perfectly seasoned filling, crispy phyllo, and honestly I could’ve eaten like 12 of them. Overall, I’d definitely come back to try more spots. The variety, quality, and convenience are hard to beat, just wish some portion sizes matched the price tag a little better.

Google
Love the concept and the vibe But the food was not on point. Got the sweet potato and feta salad from yasas because it was on the recommendation, but sadly it was disappointing. I dont think putting bunch of ingredients mixed together makes the food good. Im open to try different places within the place but not this one

Experience: -17/5- WORSE of both worlds: fast food place with wait times and prices of full service restaurant. We came prepared to have a nice lunch and as soon as we walked in we said “yup, it’s take out now” We waited 30 minutes for our order of chicken wings, fries and a burger. Drove home to find out that the HUGE bag just had the wings, sauce and cutlery. Had to drive back, complain and wait another 20 minutes for them to make the burger and fries. - Food: you’ll get better wings at dominos. Burger was the truffle burger- ate it because at this point it was starvation as real. Just terrible. - concept: like ideas of food halls and I have seen great examples. This wasn’t it- it felt like commercial kitchen rented to random people and we are just supposed to pretend it’s ok to serve same food in different color boxes. Conclusion: Never again. Not worth the gas, money or the calories.

Even though it was a new store their food was on point despite the lunch rush, they have a bright future ahead and their the only restaurant in the area open late night after 9

Google
I was so excited about Wonder to have a take out option where everyone can find something they like. But WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT. Take a look at the photo of the burger we ordered vs what we received. Not only did they get the order totally wrong (no tomato, no lettuce, no bacon), but this burnt hockey puck of a patty is pathetic. I can’t believe they think someone will order a Bobby Flay steak from here. Save you money.

Yelp
After the Light the Night walk for Blood Cancer United in RTC we decided to walk to Wonder for a late dinner. I was impressed with the large menu! I ordered the Sunday Meatballs from Alanza, my wife ordered the Drunken Noodles with Chicken from Sri Pra Phai and our daughter ordered the Truffle Burger from Burger Baby. I will start with the good, my meatballs were wonderful. The Truffle Burger was good for its price. However the drunken noodles were a failure. The meatballs were tender and light, with a very good sauce and covered in ricotta and parmagiana cheeses. I would definitely come back for the meatballs! The Truffle Burger was good, there wasn't a strong truffle flavor and the sauce was a bit sour tasting. The noodles had a wrong texture for drunken noodles. The sauce had a little kick, but overall it missed the mark for Thai drunken noodles. I will be back to try more dishes, there were so many options that looked good! Did I say the menu was huge? With such big famous chef names behind the dishes there has got to be many gems on the menu, but for a big menu that means some of the dishes will be just OK

Yelp
I first heard about Wonder Food Hall from a local publication. When I saw it was going to be in Plaza America, I figured that they may have taken over the spot where Whole Foods used to be. After all, from what I've seen of food halls, they were spacious enough to handle several vendors with plenty of places to sit. Thus, imagine my surprise to discover that they are in the spot where Taim briefly existed. Well...Wonder gives new meaning to what a "food hall" can be. It had me "wondering" how they can call themselves a "food hall". Well, it turns out that they sell food from several different restaurants. Many of them aren't even in the DMV, let alone Reston. There are some local spots that sell their food using Wonder. If you want to order food from local Reston restaurants, you're better off ordering directly from the restaurant, and I'll tell you why: most of Wonder's food offerings are prepared in Parsippany, NJ, where the food is par-cooked. Their culinary team works directly with the chefs of the different restaurants to develop menus that can be par-cooked and shipped out to their many Wonder Food Halls. Once they arrive at Wonder, they are in cold storage. When someone places an order, Wonder's employees complete the cooking process. The number of restaurants to choose from is huge! We decided to try Chinese food, so we looked at their menu. We chose to order three items from a restaurant named "Kin House". We had never heard of Kin, but later discovered they are on H St., NE, in DC, and in Rosslyn. We ordered General Tso's shrimp and General Tso's chicken plus two orders of hot and sour soup. Wonder does its own deliveries. We set up an account and put their app on our phone. The food arrived on time. Alas, we weren't that crazy about Kin House's food. Some of my chicken was dark meat, but I prefer white meat chicken. (That choice is not available. ) While some of the chicken pieces were palatable, others weren't. The hot and sour soup was more hot than sour (we've had much better elsewhere). My husband thought his shrimp dish was okay. Each of us got two meals from our order. We have our eye on other cuisines we would like to try from Wonder in the future, as we are intrigued.

Yelp
Interesting concept and I guess the draw is that you can order dishes from a bunch of "restaurants". We thought the quality and portions were disappointing for the price. If we wanted higher quality, we'd get takeout from the actual restaurant. It felt like a little like airplane food. Would not try again.

Yelp
Unfortunately, my experiences with Wonder Food Hall have been consistently disappointing. The service is average at best, and the food quality leaves much to be desired. Most recently, I placed an order that was supposed to be ready for pickup around 6 PM, but I didn't receive it until 30 minutes later. It was clear that the staff was overwhelmed--there was a young person working expo who seemed completely swamped with customer inquiries. Eventually, a young lady, who was extremely helpful and pleasant, provided an update and admitted that they were struggling to keep up with the orders. This was not my first frustrating experience: the first time I ordered, my food wasn't delivered at all. The second time, I received an item that was falsely advertised on their website. And the third time, my food was burnt. I hope Wonder Food Hall can improve their service and quality, but at this point, I cannot recommend it.

Yelp
What a joke! This is the "Detroit Style" pizza I received after ordering from Detroit Pizza. Not Detroit style at all! Arrived in a box with another pizza restaurant's name on it. $23 for this garbage?! Tried to call the location. First 3 tries, a fax machine answered. Fourth time, I sat on hold for 6 minutes listening to music and then was told to leave a message. 1. Rip off 2. Terrible customer service

Yelp
Tried this new food-hall concept for the first time. I was impressed. About two mikes from our condo, went over as soon as I placed the order. Our dinner was already out waiting for me. I was in the mood for Chinese and the General Tao chicken from the Kin House was very good. Got two meals out of it, too. The wife ordered the Thai Peanut Salad from Royal Greens. She liked the salad but was surprised that a small container of Ranch dressing came with it. We will definitely order from Wonder again.

Yelp
Interesting concept for grab-and go quality food. I just recently discovered Wonder and was pleasantly surprised. You can order online from their App in advance for pickup and delivery. This is a walk-in location where you walk to a kiosk and place your order from one of the participating restaurants. It seems like they recreate recipes from top chefs and restaurants in their kitchen in the back. My experience was quick and easy. I ordered a Beef Souvlaki & Kalamata Salad from Yasas and it was prepared within 10 minutes. They ask for your phone number so you get a text message when your order is ready. It is left for you on a shelf to pick up. If there is a staff member there they will call your order by name. There is limited indoor seating because this place is meant to be grab-and-go. You can order from different restaurant menus, and I could see this as a nice option for office catering. I would recommend and would come back again.

Yelp
Maybe my expectations were too high. I truly wonder how wonder will stay in business. My husband and I ordered from each of the menus. I got plant based options and he got meat and the steak. After tasting the food I realized we paid way too much for what we got. The food looked better than it tasted. The actual food did not have much flavor and the texture of the meat was very chewy and yucky. It reminded me of airplane food and frozen dinners. Never going back.

Yelp
Wonder Food Hall was really, and it was the first food hall in Western Fairfax County, and the food was pretty good.

Yelp
I have been to Wonder twice since it opened. Overall, I would say it has been a disappointment. The food I ordered has been mediocre to just bad. With both the sesame beef and Penang curry with chicken that I ordered, I got a handful of chewy meat in an overwhelming amount of sauce. Although the sauce for the Penang curry was decent, the sauce for the sesame beef was gooey and much too sweet. Their onions wings were good and the salt and pepper wings were okay (you can do much better at Buffalo Wild Wings). As for their egg rolls, the skin was well fried and crispy but were skimpy on filling. I'm not sure if I'll go back to try a different cuisine or just cross Wonder off my list of take-out places.

Courtney K.

Yelp
My Mexican fries were fine but didn't taste very chili lime seasoned. I got the make your own chicken burrito bowl, which I'll never order again. The chicken was terrible. Tasted very bland and gummy. The rice tasted like water. I am not one to waste food, especially expensive food, but I got through half of it and trashed the rest.

Yelp
While it wasn't what I expected, that's on me for not reading more about what this is. It is pretty much meant to be a pick up your order and go place, though there are some small tables to sit at if you want to eat there. It's good at what it is. My husband ordered the Alanza cheese pizza and it was money! It smelled and looked amazing and he confirmed it was not only great but got better with every bite! He also ordered the garlic bread from Alanza and really enjoyed it! I opted for a Royal Greens custom salad and it was also very good though I wasn't a fan of the grilled chicken on it. That is really a matter of personal taste since it was just the seasonings that didn't appeal to me. The veggies and lettuce were all very fresh which is nice. My only serious complaint about the salad was the price seemed high for what you get. I also had the Magnolia Hazelnut Banana Pudding. Before you order the Magnolia Banana Pudding, understand you are not getting what they serve in New York at the Magnolia bakery. This is a blended, frozen version packed with cookie pieces to replicate the flavor and you have to thaw it before you can eat it. After I understood what it was, I was pleasantly surprised it was kind of good. The cookie pieces and the flavor come out yummy but it has an odd texture from being frozen and it feels like you are eating an odd, soft ice cream. We plan on coming back and trying some other items. Of everything we had, I think the pizza was the best item. It was also only $10.

Yelp
We ordered delivery from Wonder and it was delivered on time with all items. My husband ordered egg rolls and lo mien and enjoyed both. He said the egg rolls were "really good" and lo mien was "pretty good." I ordered Pollo a la Catalana from Jota and enjoyed it a lot, but did think the price was a little high. We also got a burger from Burger Baby. The burger was good for the price and they had gluten free bun options which was really nice for me since I eat gluten free. To end the meal we tried one of the rice crispy treats from the dessert place which was good but again maybe a bit pricey for what it was. It was fun being able to order different types of food from one place. I was disappointed to find out that the "food hall" set up is just one counter. We were hoping for a true food hall experience! I read a lot of reviews saying the quality of the food wasn't very good, but we were happy with what we got and would try other items. Some of the prices might be a little high, but overall we liked everything.
