Siu mai, shao mai, or shu mai, is commonly used to describe either finely ground pork or pork shrimp meat folded in a delicate dumpling wrapper and then steamed.
This said, Shanghainese shao mai on the other hand, is a common breakfast street food in Shanghai, and is slightly different from the Cantonese version of the dim sum siu mai, which is made with pork and shrimp.
Shanghainese shao mai, specific to the Jiang Su region, is filled with a delicious combination of seasoned sticky rice and pork. And sometimes, a salted egg yolk is added for extra flavour and texture.
For those who were born in Shanghai, who's mom or grandma often cooked these as they were growing up can now now find some pretty authentic Shanghainese shao mai at Wonton Express, centrally located in the Shaughnessy Village.
Recently opened barely 5 months ago, M. Zeng has been serving the local community, including students from Concordia University, these tasty and yet affordable delights. But that's not all, while perusing the menu, you'll also find the classic Shanghai wonton soup made with pork and vegetables, pork and shrimp, and pork and egg yolk variants - you choose whether you like it spicy or not, and with sesame sauce or not.
Will definitely return to try the rest of the menu including a cold noodle dish!
