The 38 Best Restaurants in Toronto, Canada

"Open for: Lunch and dinnerPrice range: $$While chef and owner Eddie Yeung operates an additional Wonton Hut in the suburbs of Markham, his locale in downtown Toronto allows him to flex more. Check out his street eats-inspired menu (curry fish balls, crispy fish skin, brick toast stuffed with peanut butter and condensed milk) that honors the legacy of dai pai dong stalls that used to fill the labyrinthine alleyways of Hong Kong. Yeung’s well-known dishes are also available for fans, like cavernous bowls of fortified broth filled with glossy egg noodles and plump tiger shrimp wontons. For the best-selling Satay Beef Miso Ramen — the chef’s play on a humble breakfast dish that’s usually made with instant noodles — Yeung tosses fresh ramen into his own creamy satay soup.Vibe check: The vibe here is very chill and no frills. If you’re dining on a budget, you can easily fill up on appetizers." - Tiffany Leigh

The 38 Essential Toronto Restaurants

"While chef and owner Eddie Yeung owns an additional Wonton Hut location in the suburbs of Markham, his newer locale in downtown Toronto arguably allows him to flex more. New to this location, his street eats menu (shrimp paste toast, deep-fried cuttlefish skewers, Hong Kong-style brick toast) honors the legacy of dai pai dongs, stalls that used to fill the labyrinthine alleyways of Hong Kong. Yeung’s foundational dishes are also available here for fans as well, like toothsome house-made cuttlefish balls floating in thick laksa noodle soup, or cavernous bowls of fortified broth (so clear you can see your reflection) filled with glossy egg noodles and plump tiger shrimp wontons." - Tiffany Leigh

Google
I've been eating here since their first and original location in Markham and super happy they opened a spot in Queen West which is easier for me to visit. I've had both takeout and dine in at both their locations. Both locations are consistently excellent quality. Their food is delicious and fresh. My favorite is the signature wonton noodle soup with thin noodles - super comforting. Service is friendly and efficient.

Google
Food was good and the wontons were full of shrimp and very tasty. The noodles weren’t the greatest but you receive a decent amount for a good price. I recommend the chilli oil as it puts a very nice kick to the soup

Google
Great portion and delicious taste. A bit salty for me. I had Bun Rieu. The noodle was served so hot, which i liked a lot. They have the $12 wonton noodle for someone who eats smaller portion. I may try next time 😊

Google
Overall all right in general, I don't really get the hype. My table ordered the Signature Shrimp & Pork Wonton Noodle Soup, along with the Laksa and Beef Brisket Noodle Soups. While the wontons themselves were good, the dish otherwise wasn't particularly standout. One complaint was that there wasn't even any vegetables included in the dish (not even say any lettuce or something else that would be expected in a regular wonton noodle soup in Chinatown). The Laksa was also good and flavourful, but the toppings were generally unimpressive for what we were paying. I quite enjoyed the beef brisket and appreciated how juicy it was, but the rice noodles were pretty standard. Overall decent experience with places to improve.

Google
The signature shrimp x pork wontons are excellent. Plump, juicy, with a generous amount of filling. Every bite is satisfying! Wonton Hut’s laksa noodle broth is also deliciously rich, full of umami, and always served piping hot. A cute thing about this spot: they play a birdsong tune, so u feel transported to another world as u tuck into noods. Ooh lala.

Google
Lovely n cute spot with delicious food. The regular portion is quite large for one person and it could be shared. I had pork/shrimp wonton and it was absolutely yummy. Shrimps are so rich in flavor, noodles and broth are mouthwatering. Veggies are great too; very quick service.

Google
Most delicious wontons and noodle soup I have ever had! I visited twice during my trip to Toronto. Please open a location in Washington DC, I will miss it!

Google
Perfect spot for soup on a rainy day. We got the wonton soup , the wonton noodle soup , the curry fish balls and the Hong Kong milk tea . I loved the wontons they were big and had a good amount of shrimp with chili oil it was perfect. The fish balls did not disappoint as well 10/10. The server was very nice and took her time to explain the difference between the noodle types they have.

Yelp
You just can't go wrong with a tasty bowl of wonton soup, and we'd heard that Wonton Hut serves one of the better versions in the city, so we decided to pop by on a recent Sunday. I decided to get the Signature Shrimp & Pork Wonton Noodle Soup, and I got the regular size with thin noodles. The soup arrived minutes later and it is indeed delicious. It was too hot to immediately eat but it was worth the wait. The broth is very flavorful, especially with the addition of the chili oil on the table, and the wontons are among the best I've ever had. The service wasn't great, though. Our water was refilled only once, after we'd finished eating, and I was pretty thirsty throughout the meal. We also shared the Vegetable Spring Rolls and they were delicious. I'm intrigued by some of the other offerings on their menu, so I'm sure I'll return soon enough. It'll be hard to resist that soup, though.

Yelp
What a gem of a place I can't believe I didn't try sooner. I tried the laksa cuttlefish fish ball ramen & it was deliciously savoury. Cuttlefish in general has a more chewy & thicker texture than other fish balls. The tofu was light and airy. The spicy salty broth was balanced by the coconut milk. The shrimp paste in the broth gave it more dimension. My partner got the beef brisket with extra shrimp wontons. Beef brisket was tender, flavourful & melt in your mouth. The shrimp wonton was huge and packed with shrimp. Great value. Would come back again!

Yelp
The cozy nook of a restaurant sits on a busy street, but all that goes away when you step inside. I ordered a piping hot bowl of wonton soup that was the best noodle dish I've had this year. I spiced my soup with the homemade pepper sauce available at the table. It's not for the faint of heart though, so douse with caution. The wonton were bursting with flavor. The broth, delicate and packed with umami that can rarely be achieved. You get the feeling the chef has been working on m the recipe for years. They don't skimp on the filling in the wontons. They are loaded with chunks of shrimp. About an 80/20 shrimp to pork ratio. The noodles did a great job of absorbing the broth and pepper, but they were more of an added bonus.

Yelp
I was craving wonton noodle soup for so long and I finally found a good place downtown that's not in Chinatown! A relatively small place but we were seated right away, wontons were huge and full and the noodles were great! They have a few variations of noodle soups and side dishes, would definitely be back to try the others!

Yelp
Tasty broth that's not too salty, the dumplings were the highlight! So much filling and the skin is nice & thin, yet it manages to hold all that filling - SO GOOD! Quick service & relaxing ambiance, perfect for a nice hot bowl of noodles!

Yelp
There's no better place to get wonton noodles in downtown Toronto. I've travelled to Hong Kong, and this spot feels just like back there. You can really taste the fish flavour in the broth. The wontons are massive and definitely worth the price. The staff here are friendly as well. It had calming atmosphere. Great for casual conversations.

Yelp
The food is delicious! Simple yet a classic. The broth was served so hot, the shrimp in the wontons were so fresh and the noodles were cooked perfectly! Don't forget their house chili oil. It was so good I purchased a jar to go! Will try the Markham location next!

Yelp
As a HongKonger, I can say that Wonton Hut serves authentic wonton noodles. The wontons are the best you could find in DT Toronto - thin wrappers with perfectly cooked shrimps. However, the lemon tea was not cha chaan teng style tea, more like a canned nestea. So just order the wonton noodles!

Yelp
We ordered the wonton soup and their version of bun bo hue. The wonton soup had 4 large wontons, which were huge and filled with delicious shrimp. It pairs so well with the red vinegar and chilli oil offered on the side. The noodles were perfect. I found the broth to be rich and flavourful, without tasting overly salty or greasy. The bun bo hue remake was delicious and had a lot of beef. We got the regular spicy and it's SPICY. You have been warned. Would go for mild if spice is not your thing. It was tasty and painful at the same time. The beef balls were the perfect consistency.

Yelp
Large and fresh shrimp used to make the wontons. Soup base is a little salty for me. Service was attentive. Location is away from Chinatown.

Yelp
A rare 5 star experience for the food alone. When I asked how they are able to offer such high quality wontons, they say that this is their second location and their original popular location is in Markham. I often day dream about my last bowl of wontons at Wontons Hut. A must try and don't forget to add the noodles!

Yelp
Wonton Hut, located on Queen St. W. near Bathurst, specializes in noodle soups, with their signature being the wonton noodle soup. They also have beef brisket, fish balls, as well as a laksa soup base as well. You have the choice between thin and round noodles. This is their second location, first one being in Markham. The small eatery has seating for about 18 customers and is open for both lunch and dinner. They also accept cash and credit as well. Pricing wise, a bit more pricey than what you would fine I dropped by Wonton Hut for lunch on Thurs around 12:30pm. I was probably their first customer of the day but there were a few other customers who came in after I did. I opted for the combo where I got the wonton noodle soup (thin noodle) with a HK milk tea. The food and my drink came at a reasonable time. The HK milk tea wasn't strong enough for me in terms of tea flavor. The wonton noodle soup was great though, noodles had a nice chew and the 4 wontons had lots of plump shrimp. The chili oil is a definite must try! It's pretty spice but not the spiciest I've had. Delicious on the noodles as well as on the wontons. Service was friendly, catered towards the downtown crowd. Overall, great spot for wonton noodles! Definitely on the pricier side as you can get a bowl of wonton noodles for cheaper in Scarborough. However, if you have a craving for wonton noodles on Queen St. W. this is the place to go.

Yelp
Cute space. Absolutely loved the food. We had the shrimp and pork wontons (#2). The wontons were plump with a large juicy shrimp in each. The broth was perfect - not too salty but light, clean and flavorful. It was comforting. We also got the bun rieu and the laksa cuttlefish ball ramen. The laksa was fabulous - what an amazing curry broth. It reminded me of my grandma's indonesian soups. The bun rieu broth was light but rich with seafood flavor. They ran out of fish paste for homemade fish balls so the bun rieu had cuttlefish balls, but they were great. Will definitely be coming back to try others.

Yelp
The wonton noodle soup here is perfect. I was able to add a couple traditional dumplings to my order so I could compare. I appreciate the snack sized option as a petite person who hardly if ever is able to eat an entire meal in one sitting. The ambiance inside was peaceful and they were able to accommodate a larger group if you called ahead. The lady who served me was very kind and I would happily return to try some more of the menu if I were here in Toronto longer.

Yelp
Wonton Hut is awesome. Very good noodles and extra large shrimp wonton. Simply delicious! I will be back. The staff were also very attentive. This is a hidden gem on Queens Street.

Harrison C.

Yelp
The wonton is the best, it brings you the true Hong Kong's style, only comment is the cashier ( he might be the owner or relative) force you to tips ( even you have to go up to the cashier counter to pay the bill), because of that I took out two stars.
google avatar

Donna S.

Yelp
The wontons are large and plump and I enjoy them, however the broth is lacking in flavor. The bowl of noodle soup doesn't include any veggies ( aside from some scallions) so that is a disappointment. I've had the beef brisket noodle soup twice and the soup is also lacking in beef flavor, not as good as most other places. The beef itself is pretty good, tender.

Kate T.

Yelp
Fantastic house made squid ball laksa! Soup was rich, flavorful, just the right amount of bite to the egg noodles, and the stars were the springy house made cuttlefish balls with chunks of cuttlefish. Some of the best I've ever tried. Definitely coming back for this dish!!

Yelp
Really wanted to try this place. Went there and got the classic wonton noodle soup. The noodle soup was way too salty! But the wontons were decent.

Pa T.

Yelp
This is definitely the place you want to go if you want authentic Hong Kong style Wonton noodles in downtown Toronto. This place is a hidden gem on Queen st west and is a must try. The wontons were BIG! Bigger than ping ping ball. Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
The shrimp wonton is fresh, bouncy and plump, just like the fish balls. Beef brisket is very tender. Soup bases are very "clear" and light. Noodles both the lo mein and the round wheat noodle are bouncy and "al dente" chinese style. Downtowners remember this place opened in Markham first and is very successful, sure sign of quality Chinese food

Yelp
Very authentic wonton noodle, just like what you get from Hong Kong as it is considered a household comfort food. The 4 wontons are good size and filled with shrimp and pork. The broth is light and tasty as it is meant to be as well as the thin egg noodle. My wife had the laksa noodle which she really enjoyed with the cuttlefish balls and very rich in flavor, something that you would get in Singapore. We would recommend Wonton Hut to everyone who would appreciate the authentic taste of wonton and laksa noodles. The service is friendly and helpful.

Sam S.

Yelp
Good large Wonton. Excellent taste. The noodles were good in the beginning and got a bit soft at the end. They gave lots of noodles, maybe too much.

Denise S.

Yelp
We ordered the shrimp wonton soup to go and we were disappointedIn it as the broth had very little flavor. The fella that took our order was kind and helpful though.

Vanessa N.

Yelp
Amazing wonton noodle soup, by far the best I've had downtown. They recently introduced a snack bar for Friday and Saturday nights, I had the chicken satay and fried calamari that was excellent. Great service as well. Highly recommend!
google avatar

James K.

Yelp
The wontons are exceptional. The shrimp and pork inside the wonton are large in portion and tasty AF. The thin noodles are no different then you would find at a cheap Chinese food take out spot. Unfortunately the same for the broth. If they elevated the noodle with a hand pulled version or something and the broth was elevated, it would be the best wonton soup in the city. I would rather have the wonton soup from Swatow with the Ho Fun noodle and broth and their substandard wonton (at a much lower price) than the Wonton Hut with greater wonton but substandard broth and noodle.
google avatar

Cindy N.

Yelp
I always liked the markham location but today I decided to give the downtown location a try since I was in the area. They have a few items that the Markham location doesn't have. I had the Laksa noodles and I have to say it is a MUST TRY. The soups base is the best in town. Instead of fish balls that most places include in their laksa, they levelled up the game by using cuttlefish balls, which is more plump and more flavour. Thanks for opening in downtown, the neighbourhood needs this! P.S. didn't have a chance to take a photo as I literally finished the entire bowl in 10mins.

Yelp
Great spot for a bowl of shrimp wonton noodles to satisfy cravings. Tried their milk tea as well. So good
