When Wooboi Hot Chicken first opened their doors, my wife and daughter stopped to have lunch. They both ordered a sandwich at level 1 (just to be safe). When they got their sandwiches, they were not edible due to the excessive spice and heat. Something clearly went wrong, however it was such a bad experience they vowed to never return. This also meant it was off limits for future dinner suggestions. Believe me, I tried. Weeks, months and years passed. The mere mention of Wooboi set off a passionate recollection of the horrors experienced that day, many moons ago. My requests were immediately rejected and the denial pushed me into a dark place where hot chicken never existed.
Fast forward to this past week. My wife and I were trying to decide what to pick up for dinner one night and she was finally convinced to give Wooboi a second chance. Forgiven, but not forgotten, I went to work quickly before she changed her mind. Hallelujah!
I ordered using the online ordering system. I have to admit it is kind of clunky, but I kept at it and finally figured it out. Keep in mind, my window was closing fast before the likely event that my wife would change her mind. No Apple Pay Wooboi? Dammit man!! So many buttons, so many scrolls, so many clicks. Faster!! Faster!! Seeing that most people use their phones to order, the addition of Apple Pay would be really helpful. To pay, I had to fish my credit card out while sitting in a dark car. Not cool. It is 2023, after all.
When I arrive to pick up, I was greeted by a very helpful (and cheerful) employee. She immediately checked on the progress of my order and assured me it would be ready soon. It was....and it was nice and hot when she bagged it up. It remained nice and hot for when I arrived home to my hungry wife.
We each ordered a sandwich. Based upon her last experience, she got the level 1 and I ordered a level 3. We each also ordered waffle fries as a side. On this occasion, my wife's sandwich was perfect. It had very little spice to it and was perfectly cooked. As other ladies have referred to in other reviews, her only complaint was that the sandwich was too much for her and she couldn't finish it. She had the same issue with the fries. She loved them, but it was just too much food.
My sandwich, while perfectly cooked and delicious, was hardly what I expected at a level 3. Maybe I am used to eating spicy food, but this didn't even get my nose running. I really expected so much more. The fries and accompanying sauces were excellent. I have to admit...I finished all of mine and I might have...just maybe...eaten a few of my wife's fries, as well. I was just trying to help her out. That's just the kind of guy I am.
All in all, Wooboi makes a dynamite sandwich. Well, maybe not "dynamite" in terms of packing a punch, but their chicken is cooked perfectly. You will definitely not go hungry. As far as the spice issue, I would expect Wooboi to have this down by now. They have been open for a few years and should be consistent with flavoring their customers sandwich. Is it really that hard?
Sorry Wooboi. You are going to lose a star from me due to this spice issue. I really want to have a five star experience, because I love hot chicken sandwiches. You have competition coming from some hot chicken chains that are opening in the area. You really need to get this issue fixed, or you aren't going to keep your customers. I will always support a local restaurant over a chain, but you need to show me you can nail this thing every time!
For now, my disappointment is just between you and me, Wooboi. If she finds out my sandwich wasn't spicy enough...well...remember that dark place I referred to earlier. Please don't send me back!!
