A Busy German Restaurant Group Goes California Casual in Long Beach - Eater LA

"Wood & Salt is a new California casual eatery in Long Beach, operated by Bjoern Risse and Bülent Yildirim, known for their popular German spots Wirtshaus and Rasselbock. The restaurant features housemade pasta, wood-fired bone-in pork chops, and more, with beer and wine initially, and full liquor expected later. The venue includes a large open-air patio, sidewalk and parking lot seating, and will eventually expand to close to 100 seats with a bar and casual wooden tables." - Farley Elliott

Today was my second visit to Wood & Salt. The food and service is outstanding. All the dishes we ordered were flavorful. Always wonderful to find a hidden gem like Wood and Salt. Dog friendly on their outside patio too!

Wood & Salt Tavern in Long Beach was such a pleasant surprise — the kind of place that instantly puts you at ease. From the moment we walked in, Gabriel greeted us with the warmest welcome and let us choose any seat we liked. No pushiness, no upsell — just that perfect, low-key hospitality that makes you want to stay a while. I ordered the grilled Caesar with chicken breast, and it was spot on. The greens were crisp, the dressing had just the right bite, and the chicken was tender and flavorful with a beautiful char. My husband went for the paccheri with spicy mushroom sauce and added chicken — comforting, rich, and just enough heat to make it interesting without being overpowering. The vibe? Rustic, warm, and clean — think reclaimed wood, soft lighting, and little European touches that make you feel like you’ve wandered into a cozy tavern tucked into a stylish neighborhood in Paris or Barcelona. It’s elevated but never pretentious. Honestly, it’s the kind of place you want to keep to yourself… but also can’t stop telling people about.

Google
Service was great and the food was even better. I spotted this place walking the neighborhood. So I looked up their menu. Best decision I made. The host was very welcoming and the waitress was great. I had the whiskey braised short rib. DELICIOUS!! The braised short rib is what peeked my interest and it didn't disappoint. The hostess mentioned they had really great mocktails. He told the truth! It was a perfect pairing with my meal. I will definitely be returning.

Google
This place was great! We have been trying places in the neighborhood and this has been the best so far. The service we received from Abraham was excellent. The drinks were good and reasonably priced. We had the oysters. I thought they were good but my wife said they were okay, so this might be preference. We ordered Brussels sprouts and everyone agreed they were delicious! Totally recommend to share. The table got the burger, filet, risotto, and the braised beef! All were outstanding. The filet though, was over done. We ordered it medium rare and it wasn’t. We sent it back but again it came out too done. The saving grace was that steak was absolutely seasoned and the flavor was good. Abraham noted the issue and tried his best to resolve but the steak was edible and good! We will totally go back!

Ali was very friendly, took great care of our Big family and was attentive and went out of her way to make sure my food allergies were addressed.

Google
This is a wonderful neighborhood tavern. Parking is limited out from but there should be parking nearby, behind the restaurant around the residential area We had the Italian sandwich, the brunch burger with an ale, and finished the meal with the pistachio cheesecake. Everything was good. We spent about $60 for lunch, pretty good value. We would definitely go back.

Google
Very well prepared dishes. The shrimp in spicy sauce has nice flavors and shrimp cooked perfectly. Shared a pasta and a steak dish with my husband. Pasta carbonara was great and very light. Rib eye steak was tender and chimichurri had nice bite to it. Too full for dessert!

Google
Went for a friend’s bday dinner. It was a pretty busy Sunday evening so the staff were juggling multiple tables but were still attentive. Food was amazing!!! Loved the Cesar wedge salad, steak frites, calamari, bolognese. Tiramisu was super strong, but not sweet — personally not my taste but I know it’s authentic.

Yelp
Really enjoyed our visit here! The service was very friendly and attentive. The drinks selection was good and the food items all looked good. We had the shrimp and garlic appetizer, which was delicious! Great start. Then we had some pastas that were perfectly cooked and sauced. The chicken was very tender as well. We ended it with a light and refreshing cheesecake. I recommend all of these and will be back for sure!

Yelp
Went to Wood and Salt Tavern to celebrate my friend's birthday and have to say this was a great choice! We picked the carajillo for our drinks which was a great recommendation as we both wanted an espresso martini. The short rib hash was perfect. Juicy and and tender the meat was amazing with the egg and hash! The chicken Parmesan was a great choice too! The cheese on top was just the touch that made it next level! We were so surprised when our server brought in the birthday ice cream even though we didn't mention it to him! Although he did see our IDs when we got our drinks, it made us feel good that he was attentive!

Yelp
This review is probably closer to 3.5 stars. Decor/space - it's fine. 4.0 Service - 3.5. Started at 4 and dwindled to 3 at the end. And it wasn't busy. Food - 3.5 overall. Chicken parm was a 7/10. Very good but not great. Steak frites 4/10 - ordered mid rare but obviously rare (since it came sliced it should have been corrected before it left the kitchen). Presentation with steak on top of fries looks great, but makes fries below bloody and soft. Chimichurri was very good. Squash blossoms are usually delicate and delicious - even though they tasted ok, there was nothing delicate about these - Conan the barbarian style; breaded and deep fried. 5.5/10 for those. Drinks - 5/5 Parking - 0/5. They have none. Enjoy the whole street parking fiasco UPDATE: Dropping the rating from 3 to 2 stars for blaming the customer, i.e., did I bring up the undercooking.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I decided to come here on Valentine's Day for dinner. It did not disappoint! The ambience was classy and romantic., Dimly lit with candles on the tables. It was beautiful. Our server was very attentive and the food was phenomenal! I got the chicken Parmesan and my girlfriend got the chicken marsala, we also got brussels sprouts as an appetizer I forgot to take a photo of the pistachio cheesecake because it was that good. We also got an Americano to go with dessert and it hit the spot!! Street parking is super easy and there's plenty of it. I recommend making a reservation here if you're going on the weekends which is a great sign!

Yelp
This is a classy restaurant in Bixby Knolls. They didn't have many vegetarian items of note, but we came for drinks and dessert and had a good time. The pistachio cheesecake was delicious, very airy and not overly sweet. It isn't a huge serving, but after a meal I'd suggest sharing. The cocktail menu has some interesting options that are worth a try.

Yelp
Stopped in for dinner. They have indoor and outdoor seating. It was a little cool out and we sat outdoors. They have torches outside so we were warm. Bart was our server and provided EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE! We started with Crispy Calamari which was really good. Had a nice texture and was not rubbery. I would recommend the Peach Margarita and the Lemon drop. I was not fond of the Expresso Martini. I also enjoyed the Fettuccine that is pictured. Bart let us know that they have brunch on the weekends as well as happy hour. We will definitely be going back. Parking - Street Parking only.

Yelp
We dined at Wood&Salt Tavern during the holidays and we had a nice evening. As expected we had an amazing and creative dinner. The service was friendly and polite. Great selection of beers

Yelp
We were excited to be to bring our puppy and have lunch on their outdoor patio. The food was really tasty, everything came out tasting fresh. I had the burger and we also tried the steak and fries and the apple and beet salad. Everything was flavorful but the table's favorite was the steak and fries. There was enough space on the patio so we didn't feel crammed. The only negative we saw was the dessert menu. We tried the ice cream and tiramisu. The tiramisu was not good, it was so dry and tasted stale. I'd give them 4.5 stars for that reason, and recommend to try them out.

Yelp
Wood & Salt Tavern in Long Beach is great for large groups. We were a party of 14 for a birthday celebration, and it's a bonus that they don't require a set menu for large parties. Street parking on a Saturday night was easy to find, and the portions were generous, making it a good value. The food was all delicious, starting with Kumiai oysters (with mignonette and horseradish) and a Whipped Ricotta & Figs salad. The Gambas Al Ajillo was so good we ordered it twice, using the garlicky oil to dip bread and drizzle over the perfectly grilled ribeye, which was the highlight of the meal. The Grilled Whole Branzino was OK but had too much olive tapenade. Craft cocktails were solid, and there's a $25 corkage fee for wine. Desserts were forgettable, but overall, a great spot for a fun, flavorful dinner.

Yelp
This restaurant has amazingly delicious food. The pasta is all made in house. The service is great and they have a spicy margarita that is perfectly made not too spicy but just spicy enough.

Yelp
Wood&Salt is one of my go-tos - yummy food & good cocktails. I've been here recently for brunch happy hour & dinner. Old-Fashioned are my drink - Happy Hour Pricing is nice! Brunch - sit outside on patio Dinner - delicious barramundi Service is always on point.

Yelp
Came here on a whim this Valentine's Day and was able to get seated right away. The food was absolutely delicious! Some of the best food I've ever had. I've lived in the area for 3 years and can't believe I've never stopped by. Will be coming here again for sure!

Yelp
Small location but very nice ambience and decor. Parking is not allotted to this business so plan on drop off or parking across the street. For a Monday night it was packed and therefore service was slow in terms of getting food out. It took about an hour to get our entrees. Drinks were delish. Appetizers were under whelming. The fig and ricotta was good especially the grilled bread but the calamari was extremely salty. No need for that sauce. Food was inconsistent as in either really good (chicken parm) or mid (ribeye and frites) or overcooked (tagliatelle bolognese). Cake fees are a scam and this place has a few of of $2 per person.

Laura P.

Yelp
Delicious and very good service. I would definitely go back. Super satisfied with the entire experience.

Yelp
Wood and Salt is amazing!!! I ordered the chicken parm and it is the best I have ever had. We also ordered the steak with fries, absolutely delicious. We will have to stop by soon for pistachio cheesecake. Highly recommended!!!

Yelp
Came in a on Monday evening for a birthday dinner, party of 3. Quiet for a Monday evening around 7:30 there was plenty of space. Ordered 2 appetizers and 2 main courses, my fave was probably the chicken parm. The red vodka sauce was tasty! Enjoyed the ambiance and the complimentary birthday dessert sans song. Also enjoy the ginger berry mocktail. Luckily found a parking space out front as far as I know there's only street parking and with other restaurants nearby it might be a tough find on a busier evening.

Yelp
This place was a wonderful experience, we sat outside and watched people ho by as we enjoyed our tasty meal. I had the braised ribs and calamari as an appetizer. The ribs were super tender and perfectly seasoned. The calamari was really fresh and just delicious. We are going back tomorrow with friends from another country. That how much we enjoyed it. The service was spot on!!!

Yelp
Found this place on Yelp while looking for something last minute. First thing that caught my eyes were the pasta dishes. Everything looked amazing which was a plus for the visit. Didn't have a reservation but got a table right away. It was busy but not overly crowded. Once seated, both the hostess and waitress were amazing. Very friendly. Menu was good with different pasta dishes as well as a selection of others. Started looked great as well. Not to mentioned the drink menu which they had a full bar and good wine selection. Both had the tooth and nail red which we love the winery. Was just there a month ago. Started off with the coquette which was pretty tasty. Flaky on the outside and full of flavor inside. Main was the chicken Parmesan served with pasta and broccolini as well a chuck of burrata. Which was a perfect pairing. Pretty big chunk of chicken and cooked perfectly. As well as the burger and fries. Food was great for our first visit. Service was nice and friendly staff. Restaurant is quite beautiful which is always a plus. Would for sure have another visit here.

Yelp
Server was very helpful and the food was flavorful and my chicken was extremely moist and delicious. Hubby loved his bolognese as well. For dessert we had the chocolate cake and strawberry gelato. So fresh and great on a hot day. Only cons were that we had asked for the bread ahead of time and received it about 25 min later with the food .

Yelp
My husband and I came here last night for our 8 year anniversary! Hostess was welcoming and we were told, "Happy Anniversary!". Ally introduced herself that she will be our server. We started with shishito peppers as our appetizer. They were so delicious!! We had their W&S spicy margaritas. They were so good, we drank 3 of them!! Lol! Our entrees were amazingly delicious! I had the chicken parmigiana and my husband had rib eye steak with fries. We had no room for dessert. We're definitely coming back!
google avatar

Yelp
Appetizers and main dishes are delicious. Service was great. All of the food options sound great will return to try more.

Yelp
Really enjoyed my first time dining here. My fennel salad was fresh and citrusy, pairing well with the grilled salmon I added. Interior is simple yet beautiful. Looking forward to dining here again and trying more off the menu!

Yelp
This place is so amazingly good. I tried the Bolognese and brunch board and was pleasantly surprised with how savory everything was. Their drinks are also really strong, but not in a disgusting way. Definitely will be coming back here
google avatar

Yelp
Went here for girl dinner on a Friday night. We had a reservation but we're running late due to traffic. They were very accommodating and it was no problem when we called to change our reservation time. The drinks were well crafted and cutely presented. We got the banana espresso old fashioned, pineapple basil lemon, and spicy margarita. Highly recommend the spicy margarita and the mushroom paccheri. The space itself is perfect for a date night or casual dinner. Parking was on the street, wasn't too bad.

Yelp
Came on a Saturday steak frites were too salty maybe that's why it's called wood & SALT tavern lol But drinks were okay there's a bunch of better places near by

Yelp
Great date night spot that serves delicious pasta and drinks. I also tried the whole branzino which was great but a little pricey.

Marlene B.

Yelp
Food was delicious, server provided great service and even recommendations on what to eat!!!! I had the short rib hash was divine melted in my mouth. Came with my sister she had the brunch burrito, and she enjoyed it immensely. We even enjoyed the pistachio cheesecake!!!! The place has a very chill vibe had good music playing. Would come again to try the amazing food they have here.
google avatar

paulina g.

Yelp
I had been wanting to try this place for sometime now and given my sons school was having a fundraiser what a better reason to finally make it happen. Such a vibey atmosphere with great music playing. Our waiter Bart was great! He truly was so helpful in deciding what dishes we were between. I honestly feel there is no wrong choice, we were blown away with everything. You can taste the love and the quality. Our order: Food- Chicken parmigiana Spaghetti carbonara Kids grilled chicken with fries Drinks- Strawberry peach margarita with chipotle salt rim Mixed Berry beet French 75

.. ..

Yelp
The short rib hash was tasty. Season and spice were on point but just a bit salty for my taste. The portion is just right. Great staff.
google avatar

Patty P.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic. Service, atmosphere, and food. The fire grilled chicken was amazing. Sea bass was wonderful. Great Manhattan. Music was interesting and not overwhelming.

Yelp
Celebrated a Birthday here this evening. I recommend a reservation as it was very busy by 6.30pm. The service was great and friendly. We started with Cocktails. Then we had the Beef Tartare, Shrimp and Grilled carrots for Appetizers. For Entrees we had a mix of Pastas , Ribeye Steak and Aged Burger. The Carbonara was lacking in bacon but everything else was delicious. Ended with Tiramisu, Double Chocolate Cake, Sorbet and Espresso. Service was great all the way through Bottles of water are on the table and refilled when empty. Chairs are uncomfortable after a while, hard wood. Love the wallpaper in the bathroom. Great food highly recommend you try it

Milena O.

Yelp
Plating was nice, beautiful plates ect. Service was good enough. Food was not very good. Underwhelming to say the least. All pastas lacked flavor. The soup okay, had a soft flavor. Not a restaurant I would recommend or revisit

Sylvia S.

Yelp
Food was fantastic ! Service was great always with a smile Kept checking on us to see if we needed anything else She went out of her way to be helpful Ambiance was good ! The drinks were good

Mariia C.

Yelp
Went for mother day celebration, however not the type of Italian food my mom is into haha. Anyway, food was overall delicious. I ordered the rib-eye steak with fries, this one didn't totally impress me, as the fries were a little to greasy for my taste, and the steak was unevenly cooked (I ordered it Medium because many places don't know how to cook it medium rare yet I still got some pieces that were pretty rare), anyway it was still good with the chimichurri sauce on the top. My fiancé ordered the Carbonara which he said was delicious, but he did leave feeling hungry since there isn't much protein in it. My mom ordered the chicken Parmesan which she said she really enjoyed but could have used some more salt, which I guess is a good thing since you can just add it yourself? We got calamari as an appetizer and they're were really delicious! Even our 1year old liked them We ordered the spicy margarita which was also delicious! We sat in the patio area with the heaters so we didn't get to enjoy the inside, but it looked cute in there.

Nhu N.

Yelp
A few friends and I went for Sunday Brunch. Parking is hard to find, but we got lucky and found parking in the front. It was not too busy and were sat instantly on the patio. The restaurant is very nice and so is the service. Our waiter was nice and attentive. The menu had a good selection l, and we ended up ordering 2 burgers, steak, and short rib dish. The short rib had great flavor and the portion was pretty good for the price. The burgers were tasty. The steak was pretty small for the price. It was a bit disappointing, but the flavor was good. The mimosas were fairly strong, and good! It's in a nice location with other stores around it. It's a great place to go and talk with friends. The service was awesome, and I would come back again!
google avatar

Sjonda S.

Yelp
We tried this local eatery for the first time and we will definitely return! We ordered the calamari for appetizer and it was very tasty. For entrees we chose the Chicken Parmesan and Steak Frites, both delicious and portions were generous! We saw other guests entrees and they looked fabulous as well. We also enjoyed the cocktails and loved the tequila options. We shared a piece of chocolate cake for dessert and we ended our meal with satisfied tummies and leftovers to look forward to. The only con is the table for two was very tiny that we felt a little tight with our table, but that would not prevent me from returning. We can't wait to return to try something else on the menu!
google avatar

Yelp
Best salad of my life! Grilled Caesar- great ambiance and service. I will definitely be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Can't say enough good things about this fabulous restaurant. Service is friendly and knowledgeable. Meals are fantastic. Their specialty cocktails are excellent. Pasta is freshly made. Definitely great for a special occasion. They also have happy hour specials on drinks and appetizers.
google avatar

Veronica S.

Yelp
Chilaquiles - they were good but not spicy Brisket burrito - the meat was cooked to perfection Oysters - were tasty Drinks were phenomenal, they are well balanced. The service was good. The ambience was chill, I sat outside and it was a lonely Sunday so not much going on.
google avatar

Thanh L.

Yelp
Pasta and burger were good but the oyster was a disappointment. Barely any meat on the oyster. The service was slow. We had to ask for the check even though there was no food left on the table, and the servers walked by us like 4 times. Ambiance was nice though.
google avatar

Jordynn B.

Yelp
Let start with the place itself. There is 2 hour parking on the street which isn't too hard to find. I made a reservation on a Sunday @ 6:30p. It wasn't too crowded and they get you in and out quick. The hostess's, server and waitress was amazing! They always check on you and don't keep you waiting. The food was delicious! Chicken parm was yummy! And beautiful presentation with arugula on top. (Never seen it that way but I liked it) You can also add spaghetti noodles. The bolognese was tasty and fresh, loved the veal. Ceasar salad was a huge portion, could've used a touch more dressing and the croutons were garlic bread crust broken up. I enjoyed it. They service wine up to the top so if you're a wine lover you'll love it here. They are not skimpy on the wine (I didn't drink but I saw with the guests right be

Yelp
Such a great place, been here about 8 times and never disappointed. They change up the menu and I just love trying the latest additions. The craft cocktails are excellent. Service is friendly and very attentive . Just tried the pistachio cheese cake-Wow!!! Of course it was to go because I was stuffed. Can wait to go ba

Yelp
1. You can make a reservation online 2. Inside seating and patio seating 3. Parking is on the street 4. Candle lit at night 5. They kindly ask you before ordering if you have any allergies. Food: * ($16) Beef Tartare was so good, but we only got one artichoke on top. *($21) Gambas al Ajillo- was Not worth it. Chili oil is a waste. *($24) Spicy mushroom Paccheri- good taste, cooked al dente, but very spicy, just be forewarned! *($36) Grilled fish Baramundi- was so plain, no seasoning or taste, the carrots were good. There was still scales in the fish skin. Cocktails: *Whiskey-sour- (they will charge $3 extra to make it sour.) *($16) Oaxacan mezcal was very smooth, I recommend! Payment: *They will hand you the portable machine to pay, we felt a little pressured to tip since we split our bill and our waiter had to stand and accept both our payment.

Yelp
Nice patio and delicious food and cocktails. Had the banana old fashioned and it tasted like an island dream! Food was delicious and the service was fab.
google avatar

Rona F.

Yelp
We checked in here last night for our quarterly adulting lol, Food was great and the pasta was freshly hand made, we ordered the squash blossom which was a unique appetizer for a restaurant, calamari was good too! And for the dessert, we ordered creme brulee which was so good and the pistachio cheesecake was quite a normal cheesecake that we haven't like tasted the pistachio flavor that much. Oyster was so perfect size - small size that's what we liked! And the fish too was good! But i haven't took a photo of all the dishes that we ordered we got so busy trying all the food. Service was good and it's a friday night and it was busy. and ambiance was cozy and and casual. This was our second time here. Definitely will come back and recommend.
google avatar

Daria C.

Yelp
I thought the food was solid. It lacked flavor, in my opinion. The noodles were very bland. I love pasta. I had to add seasoning to compensate for the lack of flavor. My friend and I shared a pistachio cheesecake for dessert. That was good. Our server was very kind and professional. The ambiance exudes date night.

Crystal H.

Yelp
Super delicious food, good portions and friendly staff. You better come and check it out.
google avatar

Crystal D.

Yelp
First time here and I loved it. I admit I was a bit nervous about it. It says Italian Mediterranean but had an urban farmhouse vibe so I didn't know what to expect. But they brought it. Our server, Bart, was great and super chill, making good recommendations. We had the Barrel Aged Manhattan which was good but burned a hole in my chest since I'm not used to rye. My pineapple basil lemon drop drink was super delicious though and had a sugar rim. The shrimp in broth appetizer and beet salad (needs more burrata) were delicious - definitely dip the grilled bread in the shrimp broth! The tagliatelli and gnocci were amazing and fresh. We ended with the tiramisu which was very light and moist and whippy (I strongly dislike the cakey kind). Not a fan of all that shaved white chocolate on top but was still tasty. Dark shavings would have been waaaay better. Anyway highly recommend this spot.
