A Luxury Train Ride From Singapore to Malaysia Redefines "Heritage"

"The Singapore embarkation point for the regional sleeper experience, where ceremonial boarding rituals—thick paper boarding passes and formal presentation—set the tone for a curated journey between city and jungle." - Kevin West Kevin West Kevin West is a writer, food consultant, and “canning evangelist” (according to NPR). Clearing the custom at the Woodlands Checkpoint was quick and smooth. Despite the bus was packed of people, I really enjoyed the ride when it was crossing the strait from Singapore to Malaysia nonetheless. It is definitely a once in a lifetime expedience for travelers.

Woodlands Train Checkpoint is the main rail border crossing between Singapore and Malaysia, offering convenient access to Johor Bahru and beyond. The immigration process is smooth and efficient, and the terminal is clean and air-conditioned, though facilities are quite basic. One important thing to note — the gate closes 20 minutes before departure, so make sure to arrive early and be punctual. Overall, it’s a convenient and reliable way to travel between the two countries.

It was our first experience taking the KTM Shuttle Tebrau to JB Sentral from Woodlands Train Checkpoint. The train ride itself took only 5 mins. The waiting took longer tho. Prolly around 1 hour at least. Just to go on board the train. If you queue up earlier, can prolly take longer time altogether. The AP officers only open the doors to clear immigration about 40 mins before your train’s departure time. So be sure to come on time so that you don’t miss your train. The good thing about taking the train to JB is that you clear both SG and MY immigration and customs at Woodlands Train Checkpoint itself. You’ll need to clear SG’s first then followed by MY’s. We didn’t have to print any ticket as well. The KTMB staff will scan your passport prior to letting you enter the gate. Once you board the train, you’re off to JB and after alighting you’re free to go off directly from JB Sentral without the need for another round of immigration checks. Don’t be fooled by the train’s exterior appearance because it looks old school from the outside but everything works fine on the inside. Aircon was good, seats quite comfortable although gonna be sitting for like 5 mins only if you get a seat. Overall, okay experience except that there was still a substantial wait time required for this mode of transportation to JB.

A grab or taxi can drop you right at the entrance and you go up to the immigration. If you are not taking the shuttle train, you can go down to the bus platform after clearing SG immigration and take any bus towards jb ciq. We took one of the cw buses, paid sgd2 and 5-8 mins later, arrived at jb ciq to clear Msian immigration and walked to jb sentral and city square or komtar. They are all connected so easy to navigate. Just that before 10am, city square or komtar mall are not opened yet so had to climb down some stairs and wait at mcd's because we were trying to get to komtar. Overall, not bad considering it was Deepavali long weekend.

Be prepared for lots of waiting. No need to go ticketing with your online purchase. Went up to queue, and staff will scan your passport.... Long walk to Singapore Custom to scan... And another walk to Malaysia custom (within the same building)... Finally toliet. Then another long 20mins wait for the doors to open for boarding - think the long way was a good idea to gather all passengers, as the train moves off under 10mins after boarding.

I don't even want to give it a single star. This is the worst international train station I've ever been to in over a dozen countries. The platform staff were extremely rude, yelling at passengers getting off the train with an angry expression, even though they hadn't done anything wrong. The customs staff were very helpful and willing to help anyone with any difficulties.

Hope there is a clearer direction to reach here especially for 1st timer. We took bus 170X from kranji mrt & thought it will stop at busstop 46069. End up we need to escort by security (sorry & TQ to ICA Officers to provide such service) to walk over to woodland train checkpoint. Take note for 1st timer: only take bus from Woondland Interchange (Bus 856, 903, 911, 912) Be here 45mins before actual departure time is the best.

Very bad service. They let you download an app (they don’t just sell tickets) just to tell you that you can’t take the train leaving in 25 minutes and you’ll have to wait another 1,5 hour. Avoid this train and use the weird bus services here.
