Best LGBTQ Owned Restaurants Bars and Nightclubs in Detroit - Eater Detroit

"Determined to be the oldest LGBTQ establishment in Detroit, The Woodward, as it’s commonly known, is a beacon for its strong nightclub vibes and attracting a large segment of the city’s Black queer community. Situated in New Center, be sure to dress to impress for Sunday night karaoke or catch a rotating cast of special DJ sets featuring old school R&B, house music, and other dance music. The spot also has a full bar and a menu of mostly finger foods." - Serena Maria Daniels

Yelp
Poor customer service and our food was totally wrong. Drinks were not properly mixed. Small black businesses need to normalize rectifying issues. Good customer services and taking accountability. The area of this restaurant is up and coming. Love the north end. However, established people won't tolerate poor quality. We have options! Don't feel sorry when they are out of business. Word of the day is "customer retention."

Yelp
Great spot with great food and a fun staff. We're new to town so we've been trying to find hangouts that we can visit regularly. We will definitely be back as we felt very welcome.

Yelp
I loved this place....too bad it's been closed for several months due to a fire. I've been hoping for sign that it's reopening but I haven't seen anything that would make me believe that. hope

Yelp
A classic bar. You get what you see- a chill spot, with no frills. They are cash only. Play good music. Drinks are super strong. I don't think it's a gay bar per say, but that's majority of the clientele. If you ever have a chance to experience their Good Friday party, it's a blast (get there early, like 5-ish! It gets super crowded).

Yelp
Loved it, good device, good drinks, great afternoon crowd. Clean, chill and laid back patrons. Not sure what it looks like during the night

Yelp
We went yesterday to try it out. I was very impressed with how comfortable the interior is. Everyone was super friendly. We had lunch. The menu is not huge but there is enough there to satisfy every appetite. The food was very good. I had the corner beef sliders. Please try it out. It was a very nice mixed crowd. We felt very welcomed and will return.

Yelp
Woodward Bar And Grille is a very eclectic bar and grille that offers a variety of venues for your pleasures. In the years that I've attended this facility, they've had birthday parties, happy hours, political events, business functions and more. The beauty of Woodward Bar and Grille is that it has open space, indoor booths and bar tables, dance floor, both lower level and rooftop outdoor viewing for your pleasure. The ambiance is relaxing, where you can get your groove going to the play of the DJ, or live entertainment. The food is delicious, and the customer services is great. This is a well kept secret that should be visited frequently. Spread the word.

Yelp
This is not a gay club but I do like the fact its Blk owned. Grown and sexy. Great food music not what I'm use to being from the south but all and i would come back. Next time I Google a hip hop gay club....I will get one. Tonight was not bad at all great staff and people here

Yelp
This is one of the best gay bars I've ever been to. A real Detroit gem. Everyone is incredibly chill and friendly. Definitely worth going to if you want a night out in the city. Entrance is in the back. Warning: they make really strong drinks.

Yelp
Not to be confused with "The Woodward" restaurant downtown, this one is in New Center and it's a bar that caters mostly to African American gay (and straight) people. Parking and entrance is in rear and you have to push the buzzer to get in. The main bar is surrounded by mirrors, dark, and kind of cruisy (sometimes social). The adjacent room has a pool table and a small dance area. The music they play is usually urban hip hop/R&B. Every time I've been here, it's like 90+% black (and 0.1% Asian :). A very unique and "only in Detroit" kind of bar, indeed.

Yelp
This is my BFF's home away from his parents' home whenever he visits them for the Christmas holiday. He goes just about every night he's in town and is always trying to get me to meet him there when we're both in town. I've gone a few times over the years to meet him. It's your typical divey gay bar. The things I don't like: * The smoking. I am so used to smoke free clubs in IL. And it seems like there's more than cigarettes being smoked if you get my drift. Hate smelling like an ashtray at the end of the night. * The feel you up moment. After paying the cover charge which is usually between $5 and $10, you get to be felt up by security before being allowed inside. The Wood is in "the hood" but uggh. * It gets packed. I hate feeling like a sardine. The Wood is walls in the balls full of folks. Can get crazy depending who you stand next to. What I do like: * The jams. They tend to play a lot of the latest R&B, rap, hip-hop tunes. The dance floor is usually hopping with folks. * The drinks. I tend to have to fight to get a bartender to pay attention to me but once I get my rum and coke, I'm set. They tend to make their drinks STRONG so some of the earlier irritations become less and less as the night moves on. * The clientele. They tend to be in their late 20's to early 30's, neither of which is my current demographic. Nonetheless it is a good place for people watching and seeing what the T is. And for the most part people are generally polite which isn't always the case at bars. While I don't need to go there as often as my BFF, it nonetheless is a good place to get your dance and drink on.

Yelp
Parking is 3 bucks and cover its usually 5 bucks... Imo that's pretty cheap! Drinks are strong and atmosphere is laid back. They seem to be really relaxed on smoking policy and nobody is complaining. It's nice to still be able to relax at the bar. Its super crowded on Saturday and they have a nice drag show on Monday. Overall, its a cool place to hang out whether or not you're gay straight or bi. I love it!

Yelp
Nice..quaint new spot..stopped in on a Sunday..the atmosphere was AWESOME! Our waitress Lola was the best! She made sure we were good consistantly. We were greeted with smiles coming in and going out. We will most certainly be back!

Yelp
Awesome gay club. Went there with 5 of my friends. (only one of us are gay). The atmosphere was lovely. Everyone was really nice and just having a good time. No fights, nothing bad. Just dancing, laughter, and smiles. Will be going back again soon.

Yelp
This bar goes back forever. To the 1950s. It was THE gay bar in the 1960s when there were only about half a dozen gay bars in the city. It was so packed that they would get tips from the fire department of a raid and half of the people would have to go out the back door and walk around for a while. I guess it's now twice as big as it was originally. A Detroit institution. On separate occasions I met two of my all time favorite "discoveries" there. One was 6'7" and the other was 6'5". Both were good looking and about 25-28. They were both guards at the Detroit House of Correction. Talk about butch!! Yeah, Andy was great and so friendly. No black guys in those days, however. They went to the 1011 downtown.
